Transforming Thrift Store Finds: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Unique Fall Pumpkins with Vintage Wire Baskets and Mini Bundt Pans
There’s a special kind of magic in discovering hidden potential amidst the shelves of a thrift store. For many DIY enthusiasts and budget-conscious decorators, these treasure troves offer endless possibilities to create unique, personalized pieces for the home. It’s those unexpected “light bulb” moments, where an ordinary object suddenly sparks an extraordinary idea, that make thrifting an exhilarating adventure. Instead of seeing discarded items, we envision new life, new purpose, and a chance to infuse our living spaces with character and charm.
Imagine strolling through an aisle filled with forgotten relics – old platters, quaint lamps, ornate candlesticks, and various trinkets all mingling together. It’s within this delightful chaos that the seeds of creativity often take root. Perhaps it’s a peculiar way my brain works, or maybe it’s the thrill of the hunt, but I find immense joy in transforming what others might overlook into something beautiful and functional. This particular project began with just such a serendipitous encounter, leading to a charming set of DIY fall pumpkins perfect for welcoming the autumn season.
Just the other day, during one of my regular thrifting expeditions, I spotted a scalloped wire bread basket sitting upside-down. Immediately, my mind made a connection: “That looks exactly like the top of a pumpkin!” It was a simple observation, yet it unlocked a cascade of creative thoughts. These wire baskets are incredibly common at thrift stores and yard sales, often priced for just a dollar or two. Before this moment, I’d never given them a second glance, but now, a vision of rustic, upcycled fall decor began to form.

With this newfound inspiration, I eagerly gathered several of these unassuming wire baskets. But the creative spark didn’t stop there. As I headed to the register, my gaze fell upon a collection of mini bundt pans and Jello molds. Their fluted, round shapes instantly reminded me of small, squat pumpkins. It was the perfect complement to my wire basket idea, promising a cohesive and enchanting fall display. This is the beauty of thrifting – one discovery often leads to another, culminating in unique and surprisingly elegant decor pieces.
Today, I’m thrilled to share this sweet and thrifty pumpkin centerpiece craft as part of The Happy Housie’s Seasonal Simplicity Series. Crafting Charming DIY Wire Basket and Bundt Pan Pumpkins for Fall
Creating beautiful fall decor doesn’t have to break the bank. With a few simple, inexpensive thrift store finds and a bit of creativity, you can craft these unique wire basket and mini bundt pan pumpkins that will add a touch of rustic elegance to any space. This project is perfect for beginners and seasoned crafters alike, offering a quick and satisfying way to refresh your autumn home decor.
Supplies You’ll Need: (Some affiliate links are provided below for your convenience, should you wish to purchase new items.)
- Two Thrifted Wire Bread Baskets: Look for baskets with an interesting shape, ideally scalloped edges, as these will give your larger pumpkin its distinctive silhouette. They are often found for just a couple of dollars. If your local thrift store doesn’t have them, consider checking online marketplaces like eBay or Etsy for vintage options.
- Two Sets of Thrifted Mini Bundt Pans / Jello Molds: These small, fluted molds are ideal for creating adorable mini pumpkins. Search for ones with clear definition in their design. Similar new molds are available if you can’t find them secondhand.
- Rustoleum Copper Spray Paint: For a sophisticated and warm autumnal glow, copper is a fantastic choice. However, feel free to choose any metallic or matte color that complements your existing decor. This particular copper spray paint offers excellent coverage and a beautiful finish.
- Rustoleum Heirloom White Satin Spray Paint: This provides a lovely, soft, slightly aged white finish for the mini pumpkins, giving them a classic farmhouse or shabby chic look. Again, any preferred color will work beautifully. Heirloom White is a versatile option.
- Loctite Super Glue: A strong adhesive is crucial for securely attaching the various components. Super glue provides a quick and lasting bond. Loctite Super Glue is a reliable choice for this project.
- Approximately 2 inches of Craft Wire: This will be used to join the two wire baskets together. Any thin, pliable wire will suffice.
- A Couple of Small Sticks from Your Yard: These natural elements will serve as authentic pumpkin stems, adding a rustic and organic touch to your finished crafts. Look for small, dry twigs with interesting textures.
- Optional but Recommended: Drop cloths or old newspapers to protect your work surface, sandpaper for any rust, and gloves for painting.
Step-by-Step Crafting Instructions:
Before you begin, ensure all your thrifted items are clean and dry. If any metal pieces have rust, a light sanding can help prepare the surface for better paint adhesion. Work in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors, when using spray paint.
1. Prepare Your Wire Baskets with a Touch of Copper Elegance:
For a striking fall aesthetic, I chose to spray paint my wire baskets with a beautiful copper finish. The warm, metallic sheen of copper evokes the richness of autumn and adds an instant touch of sophistication. Hold the spray can about 6-8 inches away from the basket and apply several thin, even coats, allowing each coat to dry slightly before applying the next. This layering technique prevents drips and ensures a smooth, professional finish. While copper creates a stunning look, you could also opt for a classic silver to highlight their vintage patina, a matte black for a modern farmhouse feel, or even a distressed gold for a touch of glamour. Let the painted baskets dry completely according to the spray paint manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Whiten Your Mini Bundt Pans for Charming Mini Pumpkins:
Next, take your mini bundt pan / Jello molds. I gave mine a couple of coats of the Heirloom White spray paint. There’s something undeniably charming about crisp white mini pumpkins that makes them incredibly versatile for fall decor, blending seamlessly with both neutral and vibrant color schemes. As with the copper baskets, apply multiple thin coats for optimal coverage and a flawless finish. Allow ample drying time between coats and before proceeding to the next step. If white isn’t your preference, consider painting them a muted orange, a soft gray, or even a glossy black for a contemporary twist.

3. Assemble Your Large Wire Basket Pumpkin:
Once all your painted pieces are thoroughly dry, it’s time for assembly. Take your two copper wire baskets. Place one right-side up and the other upside-down on top of it, aligning their edges perfectly to form a spherical, pumpkin-like shape. Use the small length of craft wire to securely bind the two baskets together. Thread the wire through the openings in the basket weave at several points around the circumference, twisting it tightly to ensure a stable connection. This creates the main body of your unique pumpkin.

4. Add a Natural Stem to Your Wire Pumpkin:
For an authentic touch, select a small, sturdy stick from your yard to serve as the pumpkin stem. Break or cut it to your desired length – typically 2-3 inches works well. Apply a nickel-sized dot of super glue to the center top of your assembled wire basket pumpkin, where the two baskets meet. Firmly press the stick into the glue, holding it in place for about 30 seconds to allow the glue to set. Ensure the stick is upright and centered. Allow the glue to fully cure, which can take several minutes, before moving the pumpkin.

5. Create Your Adorable Mini Bundt Pan Pumpkins:
Now for the smaller pumpkins! Take two of your white-painted mini bundt pans. Apply a thin, continuous bead of super glue around the rim of one bundt pan. Carefully place the second bundt pan directly on top, aligning the edges perfectly. Press down firmly for about 30 seconds to ensure a strong bond. The fluted edges of the bundt pans will create the classic ribbed look of a pumpkin.

6. Attach Twig Stems to Your Mini Pumpkins:
Just like the larger pumpkin, these mini versions need stems. Select smaller, thinner twigs for these cute creations. Apply a tiny dab of super glue to the center of the top bundt pan. Gently press a small twig into the glue and hold until secure. Repeat this process for all your mini bundt pan pumpkins. You can make as many of these as you like to complement your main wire basket pumpkin.

And just like that, you have a collection of absolutely charming, handmade fall pumpkins! They are incredibly easy to make, and the result is truly delightful. These thrifty, upcycled creations bring a unique character that store-bought decor often lacks.

Styling Your Upcycled Fall Pumpkins: A Cozy Centerpiece Idea
One of the best aspects of these DIY pumpkins is their versatility. The large wire basket pumpkin, with its open structure, doubles perfectly as a unique lantern. I love placing a pillar candle inside, letting its warm glow diffuse through the wire lattice, creating a cozy and inviting ambiance for fall evenings. However, your options are truly limitless! You could fill it with a cascade of autumn leaves, small gourds, a string of battery-operated fairy lights for a whimsical touch, or even a fragrant potpourri blend to fill your home with seasonal scents. The choice is yours to personalize this charming piece.

These handmade pumpkins have found their perfect home as a fun, whimsical fall centerpiece on our breakfast nook table. The combination of the rustic copper and crisp white, paired with natural twigs, creates a beautiful focal point that feels both refined and approachable. They add a touch of handmade warmth and character to the space, inviting lingering conversations over morning coffee or evening meals.

Integrating DIY decor into your existing home style is incredibly rewarding. The beauty of crafting your own pieces is the ability to tailor them to your aesthetic. Whether your home is modern, traditional, farmhouse, or eclectic, these upcycled pumpkins can be adapted with different paint colors and embellishments to fit right in. They bring a personal touch that curated items simply can’t replicate.
For those curious about the other elements in our breakfast nook, I’m happy to share the sources below. These details help create the overall cohesive look that perfectly complements our new fall centerpiece:
- DIY wall planter using antique banisters (tutorial available)
- Craigslist antique table (a similar style can be found here)
- Lantern pendant light
- French bistro chairs (ours were fantastic inexpensive finds from TJ Maxx, but these are similar)
- Macrame table runner
- Wall color: Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee
- Trim color: Benjamin Moore Simply White
- Door color: Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron

To complete the fall tablescape, I incorporated a couple of eucalyptus bundles, which I picked up for a steal at Trader Joe’s. At just $3 each, they offer incredible value and a beautiful, natural touch. Eucalyptus is one of my favorite greens any time of year, but its muted tones and graceful drape are especially perfect for early fall, adding a fresh, organic element to the warm metallics and whites of the pumpkins.
