A Journey Inspired by Memories: The Genesis of the Seaside Christmas Journal
“Hello everyone! I’m Rhonda from JOYjunktique, and I am absolutely delighted to share my latest Design Team project for The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership site with you. This ‘Seaside Christmas’ journal holds a very special place in my heart, as it was lovingly inspired by cherished memories of my dad. He had a deep love for both Christmas and the boundless ocean. Growing up on the sun-kissed beaches of Florida, he spent his childhood sailing the waters, forging a lifelong connection to the sea. So, when I stumbled upon the delightful Cape Cod Christmas kit on The Graphics Fairy site, my thoughts immediately turned to him. It felt like the perfect catalyst to begin creating this unique journal, which I’ve affectionately named ‘Seaside Christmas.’ This journal is designed to be more than just a craft; it could serve as a treasured memory book, preserving precious moments, or even function as a charming planner to help you organize and prepare for the upcoming holiday season.”
Crafting the Captivating Cover: Shakers, Sparkle, and Seaside Charm
“My creative process for the cover began with two humble coffee-dyed window envelopes, each measuring a generous 9×6 inches. I carefully joined them at their flaps to form the sturdy base of the book cover. To enhance durability and visual appeal, I removed the original cellophane window and replaced it with a much sturdier transparency film. From there, I printed my chosen images for the front and back covers onto quality cardstock, infusing them with a touch of holiday magic by adding delicate glitter ‘snow.’ These images were then covered with the transparency film, cut precisely to fit and glued securely, while I artfully sprinkled more glitter inside to create enchanting shaker cards. These whimsical shaker cards were then meticulously glued into the openings of the envelope windows, creating an interactive and sparkling focal point. To frame the shaker card on the front cover, I cut a beautiful piece of blue lace trim, sourced from one of the exquisite end papers printables found on The Graphics Fairy website. The final touches involved embellishing the cover with elegant sequin snowflakes, backed with soft, snowy tulle and rustic cheesecloth, perfectly blending the winter wonderland aesthetic with a subtle coastal feel.”
The Spine and Back Cover: Details That Delight
“Moving to the spine and back cover, I incorporated soft muslin fabric, carefully leaving an opening to allow the charming shaker card to peek through from the back. A delightful white picket fence image from the Cape Cod Christmas kit provides a charming finishing touch to the back cover, evoking a sense of quaint coastal beauty. To add an extra layer of texture and sparkle, I attached delicate coffee filter ruffles to the bottom edges of both the front and back covers, then sprinkled them generously with iridescent blue glass glitter, reminiscent of sparkling sea foam. Along the spine of the journal, a carefully chosen piece of decorative trim adds visual interest and cohesion. The journal is elegantly secured with a piece of natural rope, tying the entire coastal theme together. For a final flourish, I embellished a beautiful ornament, sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s German Christmas Market kit, and suspended it gracefully from the rope closure, creating a truly unique and festive detail.”
Unveiling the Interior: Pockets of Treasures and Cozy Liners
“Upon opening the journal, you’re greeted by a soft muslin fabric liner, thoughtfully designed with a functional pocket at each end of the book. These pockets are secured with charming shell buttons and rustic twine, adding to the seaside aesthetic. Inside these delightful pockets, you’ll discover a collection of carefully curated ephemera: a scrappy notepad nestled within a snowy bird envelope, along with other charming goodies, all ready to be incorporated into your journaling or used as delightful accents. A subtle hint of the beautiful blue velvet ribbon that lines the inside of the book spine also peeks through, adding a touch of luxurious detail.”

“As you gently turn the first page, you’re immediately transported by a beautiful lighthouse wallpaper page, discovered in my personal stash and enhanced with delicate stitching around its edges. A vintage postcard depicting a grand ship, pulled from The Graphics Fairy’s Sea Captain’s Voyage kit, doubles as a clever pocket, perfectly sized to hold this adorable mini notebook. I added a charming strip of washi tape to its front cover for an extra touch of character.”
“This next spread features a breathtaking seascape image from the Ocean Blues Ephemera kit, beautifully complemented by a wintery tag from the Abstract Winter Acrylics kit. I skillfully created a functional pocket by adhering the seascape image to the subsequent page. Tucked inside is the lovely winter bird tag, which I accented with a homemade snow paste and a delicate die-cut snowflake. Throughout this journal, you’ll notice that I’ve generously applied snow paste and intricate snowflakes to most of the ephemera, ensuring a consistent and magical winter theme across all the seaside elements.”
“A gorgeous piece of lace was ingeniously used to create a graceful tuck spot at the bottom of this page, perfect for holding these soft, muted-toned tags. These delightful tags were sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s Sea Spray kit, and I further enhanced their winter charm with delicate snowy tulle accents.”
“For this captivating spread, I printed a detailed map image from the Pirate’s Cove kit onto delicate vellum, then fashioned it into a unique slanted pocket with a fold-down feature. Inside this clever pocket, I’ve placed a tag that I beautifully embellished with a coffee-filter ruffle and more sparkling blue glass glitter, continuing our coastal Christmas theme. The shimmer adds such a beautiful, icy-ocean feel.”
“These pages feature a piece of my own coffee-dyed lace paper and a classic sheet of graph paper, providing a wonderful contrast in textures. To introduce a pop of festive color, I gathered a beautiful plaid ribbon and layered it with a strip of snowy tulle, creating a soft, voluminous ruffle. I then glued on an adorable sleigh button and tucked in a vibrantly colored, snowy tag featuring a charming dog, a delightful image from The Graphics Fairy’s Dashing Through the Snow kit.”
“This page is crafted from another exquisite piece of wallpaper I had in my personal collection. I simply folded it to create a clever tuck spot behind a remnant of a book spine that I had securely glued down. To further enhance the nautical theme, I added a piece of rope, swirled artistically on the page, and a charming anchor sticker. Inside the folded wallpaper tuck, I nestled three lovely postcards from the German Christmas Market kit, each accented with a touch of snow, blending the festive and maritime elements seamlessly.”
“I absolutely adore this toile patterned page from the Delft Blue Ephemera kit; its perfect shade of blue and beautiful sailboat image perfectly complement the journal’s theme. The elegant script page, found in The Graphics Fairy’s end papers section, ingeniously forms another pocket when glued to the next page. This pocket cradles a charming shell notepad I crafted using an image from the delightful La Mer kit. A delicate sand dollar charm dangles gracefully from the top, a subtle nod to the serene beauty of the shore.”
“For this charming mini journal insert, I creatively used the flap of an envelope to attach two coordinating book covers, both sourced from the versatile Ocean Blues Ephemera kit. I then carefully punched holes and added a collection of pages, securely tied in place with rustic twine. To complete this mini journal, I hung a lovely compass charm from the twine, symbolizing guidance and adventure, perfect for a seaside theme.”
“This page proudly features a beautiful sand dollar image, thoughtfully selected from the Sea Spray kit. To this, I added a delicate crocheted pocket, which holds two adorable tags, both lovingly accented with a touch of snow paste, blending the delicate beauty of the ocean with a hint of winter magic.”
“Here, you’ll find a beautifully distressed page, perfectly complementing the other side of that versatile envelope. I carefully opened the envelope flaps and added eyelets, securing them with a quaint fabric scrap bow, allowing it to tie closed. Tucked beneath the flaps is a charming mini envelope containing a tiny card. I am particularly fond of the sweet little boy image featured here, which comes from The Graphics Fairy’s Sea Captain’s Voyage kit. The underneath flap ingeniously pulls out to reveal another scrappy notepad – because, let’s be honest, you can never have too many notepads when you’re busy preparing for the joyous Christmas season!”
“In addition to the main journal, I also decorated several charming ornaments. These versatile pieces can be tucked inside the journal, used as unique accents for Christmas gifts, or even hung to adorn your Christmas tree. The delightful snowy coin envelope, a gem from the German Christmas Market kit, holds a collection of cute tags, each beautifully accented with a touch of snow, making them perfect little keepsakes or embellishments.”
