Norma’s Creative Journey: From Retirement to 19th-Century Inspiration

Hello everyone, I’m Norma of Crafted by Norma, and it’s an absolute pleasure to share my inaugural design team project for The Graphics Fairy with you all. My passion for mixed media art and paper crafts truly blossomed after I retired, finding endless inspiration in the elegant aesthetics of the 19th Century. When I first explored The Graphics Fairy’s Premium Membership Site, I was genuinely overwhelmed—in the best possible way—by the sheer volume of exquisite images, printables, and bundles available. It’s a crafter’s paradise!

My initial approach to navigating this vast collection was to gravitate towards a color palette that perfectly complemented my personal journaling style. I have a deep affection for muted, earthy tones, often enhanced with distressed finishes to evoke that cherished aged, antique look. After carefully perusing the extensive range of background papers, I selected a beautiful script background paper as the foundational theme, allowing its subtle elegance to permeate the entire journal. The journal itself was constructed from sturdy A4 kraft card and recycled manila envelopes, which naturally determined its practical and pleasing size of 8.25 inches by 5.5 inches.

The front cover of this Apothecary Junk Journal is a testament to durability and intricate detail. Crafted from a double layer of A4 kraft card, it offers a robust base, ensuring the journal withstands the test of time and handling. For a distinctive closure, I repurposed a delicate chain from a broken bracelet, adding a touch of vintage elegance and functionality. Integrated into the cover is a charming notebook, offering ample extra space for journaling, notes, or sketches. This notebook features a carefully selected tag and label, adorned with a captivating 19th-century figure sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s popular “Digi People bundle No.2.” A clever design choice was to glue the notebook on only three sides, creating a hidden slot at the back—perfect for tucking away an additional journaling tag. The notebook itself is a tactile delight, filled with coffee-stained and vintage papers, interspersed with beautiful feather-patterned pages, all contributing to its unique character and visual interest.

Turning the first pages reveals a meticulously arranged spread, immediately immersing the viewer in the apothecary theme. Here, I’ve skillfully combined various elements: intricate labels and evocative images from the “Apothecary Labels” bundle, curiosities from the “Cabinet of Curiosity Bundle,” and a genuine vintage letter from the “ephemera paper collection.” A standout feature is the ingenious use of an old manila envelope, attached along the side of the page, cleverly repurposed to form a functional pocket. The brilliance of constructing the journal’s signatures from envelopes is truly evident here; by creating a subtle slit at the top, I was able to incorporate additional hidden writing space, perfectly sized for a card tab, inviting deeper exploration and personal reflection.

The next page unfolds with even more clever storage solutions and tactile appeal. The other half of the manila envelope continues its role as a versatile pocket, seamlessly extending the thematic flow. Complementing this, a dedicated side pocket has been integrated, designed to perfectly house one of the custom tags. For this project, I carefully adapted and distressed tags from The Graphics Fairy’s “Tags – Custom Distress Tags Bundle,” ensuring they perfectly suited the aesthetic and were used consistently throughout the journal. This particular tag is a multi-layered creation, featuring a coffee-stained index card as its base, adorned with a piece of that exquisite script paper, and finished with one of my own unique stamps, adding a personal touch to this charming ensemble.

Further into the journal, the ingenuity of using envelopes as a foundational element shines once more. The side of this envelope was strategically split, creating a discreet yet accessible space. Within this clever opening, I’ve nestled mini planner note paper, offering an additional, often unexpected, area for private thoughts, quick notes, or hidden messages. This subtle feature embodies the spirit of a junk journal—full of surprises and opportunities for personal embellishment.

One of my favorite techniques to infuse journals with engaging interactivity is through the use of hidden flip-ups, and this journal features a particularly delightful one. This innovative element conceals extra notelet space, perfect for secret messages or extended journaling, adding an element of discovery to each page turn. On the opposing page, I’ve incorporated a sturdy 2-inch paper clip, not merely for attachment, but as an integral design feature. It elegantly holds a collection of ephemera and various writing papers, alongside charming small tags and a beautiful vintage postcard, all drawn from the rich ephemera paper collection. For a distinct touch, one of these tags has been thoughtfully inserted into the side of the page, allowing its texture and design to peek out. I am especially fond of the unique “leather look” finish on the tags I selected, which adds a sophisticated, aged character to the entire composition.

Continuing the journey through this captivating journal, this page offers even more opportunities for writing and artistic expression. I’ve added further selections from the diverse ephemera writing papers, providing ample space for personal reflection and creative entries. To complement the existing elements, I crafted a larger tag, maintaining that striking “leather look” that adds so much character. A truly innovative feature on this page is the handcrafted window pocket, fashioned from kraft card stock. This pocket is designed to gracefully wrap around the page, not only securing its contents but also providing an intriguing visual element that adds depth and unexpected interest to the layout, inviting closer inspection of the layers within.

The strategic addition of various labels and tags throughout the journal significantly amplifies the overall Apothecary theme, transporting the viewer to a bygone era of potions and remedies. With the countless possibilities offered by The Graphics Fairy’s extensive collection of images and kits, I was absolutely delighted with the final outcome of my journal. It felt like every choice contributed to a cohesive and enchanting narrative. On the concluding pages, I’ve included a small notebook, perfect for summarizing discoveries or last thoughts, and as a whimsical touch, one of my handcrafted faux quill pens, serving as a charming reminder of the journal’s historical inspiration.
