The 2020 Candlelit Yuletide Journey

Finding Light in the Shadows: A Christmas Night Reflection on Lessons Learned in 2020

As the final days of a truly unprecedented year drew to a close, it was impossible not to feel a sense of profound relief, mixed with a deep well of unexpected gratitude. For many, 2020 presented an array of formidable challenges, reshaping daily lives and altering perspectives in ways we never imagined. I count myself incredibly fortunate to have navigated these turbulent waters with a healthy family, a full pantry, and a safe roof over our heads. Yet, amidst the global upheaval and personal adjustments, 2020 emerged as an extraordinary teacher, imparting lessons that will resonate with me for a lifetime.

In the quiet evenings leading up to Christmas, once the children were tucked into bed and the house settled into a peaceful hush, I embraced a cherished tradition. I would turn off the flickering screens, silence the digital world, and simply sit in the soft, ambient glow of our Christmas lights. This annual ritual offers a precious space for reflection, allowing the mind to unwind and the heart to connect with the true spirit of the season.

Finding Peace Amidst the Twinkle: More Than Just a Home Tour

The Christmas Night Tour holds a distinctive place in my heart, offering something profoundly unique that no other blog post throughout the year truly can: an overwhelming sense of peace. Unlike the bustling energy of holiday gift guides or the often-messy realities of home improvement projects, this tour is an invitation to simply breathe. It’s a moment to pause, to soak in the serene beauty of our homes adorned with the gentle glow of lights and the soft flicker of candles, reminding us of the quiet miracles of the season.

2020’s Unexpected Gifts: A Profound Shift in Perspective

Despite the undeniable stresses and anxieties that defined this past year, I find myself continually reflecting on the unexpected blessings and the profound shifts in perspective it brought about. It was a year that stripped away many of the non-essentials, forcing a deeper appreciation for the truly important aspects of life.

The absence of jam-packed weekend plans, for instance, wasn’t a loss; it was a gain. It gifted us invaluable time to slow down, to truly connect with our children, to embark on impromptu adventures in our own backyard, and to simply be present with one another. We exchanged frantic schedules for unhurried moments, creating memories that will undoubtedly last far longer than any fleeting weekend trip.

The inability to travel widely didn’t mean a forfeiture of experience. Instead, it provided an unparalleled opportunity to focus inward, to cultivate and cherish our lives right here, at our roots. We rediscovered the beauty of our local community, explored nearby parks and trails, and found joy in nurturing our immediate surroundings. This grounding experience allowed us to build stronger foundations within our home and within ourselves.

Furthermore, not being able to see far-away friends and extended family as often as we’d like wasn’t a complete void. It spurred a beautiful redirection of energy, encouraging us to be better neighbors, to foster deeper connections with those physically closest to us. We learned the immense value of checking in, offering support, and building a true sense of local community, proving that connection can thrive even when proximity is the only option.

The Enduring Sanctuary of Home: Cherishing Our Space

While I eagerly anticipate a future where our house is once again filled with the joyous laughter of out-of-town guests and the warmth of big family reunions, I can’t help but carry forward a profound sense of gratitude for the profound change in perspective that 2020 instilled. This past year underscored the irreplaceable value of our home – not just as a physical structure, but as a sanctuary, a place of comfort, growth, and unwavering security.

Never again will I take for granted the simple pleasures: a spontaneous date night at the local movie theater, the communal comfort of a Sunday in church, or the exquisite delight of a delicious meal shared in a bustling restaurant. These experiences, once taken for granted, now shine as precious gems, reminders of the vibrant tapestry of life that awaits us. And never again will I overlook the profound significance of this house, our cherished home, for welcoming us back, day after day, year after year, offering solace and strength as life eventually returns to a more familiar rhythm.

A Renewed Spirit of Giving and Connection: Looking Beyond Ourselves

This year, more than ever before, I’ve felt an overwhelming surge of motivation to give back, to extend a helping hand to those who have been most severely impacted by the year’s trials. There’s a powerful fire ignited within me, an urgent desire to utilize all that I have been blessed with – my resources, my skills, my platform – to contribute positively to the world around me. The lessons of resilience, compassion, and shared humanity have truly resonated, inspiring a deeper commitment to service and generosity. And for that profound shift in my priorities and outlook, I find myself unexpectedly thankful to 2020.

Through every twist and turn this year has presented, one constant source of comfort and encouragement has been you, my cherished readers. There are days when the weight of responsibility feels immense, and I question whether I truly deserve this incredible job, this beautiful home, this blessed life. In those moments of doubt, when I feel completely inadequate, your kind comments and uplifting messages serve as a powerful beacon, gently lifting my spirits and reminding me of the wonderful community we’ve built together. It is my sincerest hope that, in some small way, I manage to return that love and support right back to you through the content I share on this blog.

You Are Loved, You Are Worthy, Hope Is Just Around the Corner

Regardless of what this past year has held for you, I want you to know this with absolute certainty: you are profoundly loved. You are inherently worthy, deserving of every good thing life has to offer. And please hold onto this truth – brighter days and good times are most assuredly just around the corner. The resilience of the human spirit, coupled with the unwavering power of hope, will always guide us through the darkest of nights.

The Power of Stillness: Finding Peace in the Quiet Glow

So, if you’re like me, if you find yourself yearning for a moment of quiet reprieve, an escape from the ceaseless demands of the digital age, then I encourage you wholeheartedly to embrace it. Turn off the television, put down your phone, and allow yourself the simple luxury of reflecting by the dim, comforting glow of the Christmas tree and the gentle crackle of a fireplace. Take a moment, however brief, solely for yourself. Because sometimes, amidst the chaos and uncertainty, the quiet, the calm, and the profound peace that stillness offers are precisely what we need to recenter and rejuvenate our souls. This past year, more than any other, has undeniably illuminated that fundamental truth for me.
