Embracing the Call of the Ocean: Terri Kolte’s Inspiration
As the days grow longer and the sun begins to warm the air, my thoughts inevitably drift towards the serene beauty of the seashore. But not just any shoreline; I envision the tranquil beaches of yesteryear, devoid of bustling crowds, where golden sand meets the gentle embrace of the waves. My mind conjures images of vibrant seashells scattered across the shore, nestled beside faded photographs of elegant beauties in their timeless bathing suits, capturing the essence of simpler summers. This junk journal, therefore, is more than just a craft project; it’s my heartfelt ode to those idyllic days gone by, a tangible scrapbook of cherished memories and wistful dreams.
Crafting the Coastal Dream: Selecting Your Materials
To bring this vision of a vintage seashore to life, I carefully selected key resources that resonated with my nostalgic theme. The Graphics Fairy’s Premium Membership site proved to be an invaluable treasure trove, offering two essential bundles that provided the perfect color palette and thematic elements: Seaside Holiday and She Sells Seashells. The ‘Seaside Holiday’ bundle introduced a delightful array of beach-themed ephemera and vibrant imagery, instantly transporting me to sunny shores. ‘She Sells Seashells,’ as its name suggests, offered an exquisite collection of shell illustrations, ranging from delicate to grand, providing authentic touches of marine beauty.
The foundation for each page of this journal was laid using images from the Vintage Postcards bundle. This choice was deliberate and highly thematic; it’s entirely plausible that vacationers from a bygone era would have sent postcards from their seaside getaways, sharing snippets of their adventures with loved ones far away. These vintage postcard images inherently carry a sense of history and travel, providing an authentic backdrop for our journey.
Beyond the premium bundles, I incorporated a few black & white images of “beach girls” from my personal collection. However, the beauty of junk journaling lies in its flexibility; you can easily source similar captivating images from other Graphics Fairy bundles or even repurpose personal family photographs. Converting your own photos to black and white can add an incredibly unique and sentimental touch, transforming them into genuine historical treasures within your journal. These monochromatic images create a striking contrast against the vibrant, colorful elements, adding depth and a timeless quality to each page.
Page Sizing and Vintage Touches
My aim for this project was to create a diminutive, intimate journal, reminiscent of an actual vintage postcard. To achieve this, I opted for a printed size of 3 1/2” x 5” for each postcard page. This compact dimension enhances the ‘souvenir’ feel of the journal, making it a charming keepsake. To imbue each page with an authentic aged look, a delicate application of Distress Ink along the edges was all that was needed. This simple yet effective technique subtly fades and softens the paper, making it appear as though it has weathered the passage of time, adding to its vintage appeal.
Assembling Your Seashore Memoir: The Page Attachment Method
Connecting the individual postcard pages to form a cohesive journal might seem challenging for such a small format, but I employed a clever, old-school technique that ensures durability while maintaining a clean, invisible finish. I utilized small, folded strips of paper to discreetly attach two postcards together, creating a seamless two-page spread. Here’s how it works: I cut paper strips measuring 1” x 3 1/2”, then folded each strip lengthwise precisely in half. These folded strips were then glued to the back of two postcards placed side-by-side, effectively joining them into a single, wider unit. This method creates a sturdy hinge that remains completely hidden from the front, preserving the pristine aesthetic of your vintage postcards. You can repeat this process as many times as necessary to achieve your desired number of two-page spreads.
Once you’ve prepared all your two-page spreads, the next step is to assemble them into the main body of your journal. This is achieved by attaching the “wrong side” (the back) of the right-hand postcard of one spread to the “wrong side” of the left-hand postcard of the next spread. Continue this process, adding additional pairs until your book block is fully assembled. The key here is careful alignment to ensure a neat and professional finish. This ingenious technique makes surprisingly quick work of establishing the core structure of your journal, allowing you to move swiftly into the exciting phase of embellishment.
Embellishing with Coastal Charms and Personal Touches
With the structure in place, it’s time to breathe life into your pages through thoughtful embellishments. Seashells, meticulously fussy-cut from the beautiful prints found in the ‘She Sells Seashells’ bundle, are perfect for this. Fussy cutting involves carefully cutting out specific images from a larger pattern, allowing them to become standalone elements. These delicate shells can be layered over the charming watercolor images from the ‘Seaside Holiday’ bundle, which serve as exquisite backgrounds. By layering shells, vintage beach girls, and other coastal motifs, you create a sense of depth and narrative on each page, inviting the viewer to explore further.
No ocean-themed project would be complete without a compass rose, a classic symbol of navigation and adventure. Mine peeks out subtly from beneath a souvenir postcard and a single, perfectly placed shell, hinting at journeys taken and discoveries made. Furthermore, don’t fret if you find small blank spaces remaining on your postcard bases. These are ideal for tiny snippets of journaling, a favorite seaside quote, small photographs (perhaps 2” x 2” to maintain the diminutive scale), or even pressed flowers or other flat ephemera collected from your own adventures. These intentional blank spaces are what truly allow your journal to reflect *your* unique personality and story, transforming it from a mere collection of images into a deeply personal keepsake.
Creating the Spine and Finishing Your Cover
Once all your pages are exquisitely adorned and assembled, it’s time to focus on the spine – a crucial element that provides both structure and aesthetic appeal. First, accurately measure the width of your assembled little book’s spine; this measurement is essential for a tailored fit. I then cut a strip of paper, choosing a charming map print from The Graphics Fairy’s East Coast Maps bundle, to cover the entire spine. This map print adds another layer of thematic richness, evoking thoughts of coastal journeys and explorations. My strip was cut to 3 1/2” x 2 1/4”. For a professional, crisp finish, I scored the paper at the 1” mark and again at 1 1/4” (my spine being 1/4” wide). These scores ensure clean folds that wrap neatly around the book block.
After applying glue to the scored sections, I carefully attached the spine piece to the front and back covers of the journal. It was at this stage that I chose to incorporate a delicate ribbon, gluing it onto my cover and allowing enough length on the ends to tie into a loose, decorative knot. This ribbon adds a tactile element and a touch of elegance. To complete the covers, I layered additional images, specifically using the square Coastal coaster collages PDF elements from The Graphics Fairy, gluing them directly over the top of the ribbon. This layering technique allows the ribbon to become an integrated part of the design, rather than just an afterthought. Finally, feel free to embellish as much or as little as you desire with extra seashells, blank labels, or delightful sea creature motifs to truly personalize your cover.
For my final flourish, I couldn’t resist adding a charming metal embellishment, perfectly nestled between the claws of a lobster image on the cover. This tiny detail brought a huge smile to my face and added a whimsical, unique touch that truly completed the journal’s story.
Your Imagination, the Only Limit
I genuinely hope this little souvenir from the shore brings you as much joy in its creation as it brought me. The beauty of this technique is its incredible versatility. While I chose a diminutive postcard size, you can easily adapt these steps to create a journal of any dimension you desire. Whether you prefer a charmingly small keepsake or a more substantial Traveler’s Notebook size – or even larger – the fundamental process remains the same. Your creativity and imagination are truly the only boundaries to the wonderful junk journals you can bring to life.
