Why Embrace Shabby Chic for Your Christmas Decor?
Shabby chic style, with its blend of vintage elegance and distressed charm, is perfectly suited for holiday decorating. It evokes a sense of nostalgia, warmth, and handcrafted beauty that mass-produced items often lack. Creating your own shabby chic ornaments allows you to infuse your home with a unique, personal touch, making your Christmas celebrations even more special. These pieces tell a story, often incorporating upcycled elements that add character and a sustainable edge to your festive arrangements. Imagine the delight of decorating your tree with ornaments that carry a history, transformed into new beauty!
Gather Your Supplies: Essential Materials for Your Angel Ornament
One of the best aspects of this DIY project is that many of the materials can be sourced affordably, often from thrift stores, craft stashes, or even repurposed items around your home. Here’s what you’ll need to create your own charming angel ornament:
Essential Tools & Materials:
- A Small Frame or Applique: This is the foundation of your ornament. Keep an eye out for small, ornate picture frames at thrift stores, or get creative with architectural appliques salvaged from old furniture pieces. My project uses an antique furniture applique that already resembles a mini frame without a back, which is perfect for this craft. If you can’t find an applique, a small wooden or resin frame works beautifully.
- Vintage Angel Graphic: The heart of your ornament! Head over to The Graphics Fairy to explore her vast collection of free printable images. I chose the lovely Victorian Angel with Pink Wings for this tutorial, but feel free to select any graphic that speaks to your heart.
- Decorative Paper: Vintage wallpaper scraps, beautiful scrapbook paper, old book pages, or even patterned cardstock will work perfectly. This will serve as the pretty backing for your angel graphic, adding texture and depth.
- Adhesive: A hot glue gun is excellent for quick bonding of larger elements like the frame and backing. For more delicate details and precise placement of your graphic, tacky glue or a good craft glue is ideal.
- Scissors: Sharp scissors are essential for clean cuts, especially for intricate details.
- Pencil: For tracing your frame onto the decorative paper.
Optional Embellishments for Added Shabby Chic Charm:
- Lace, Ribbon, or Trim: These are wonderful for creating a hanger or adding decorative accents around the frame. Look for vintage lace or delicate ribbons for an authentic shabby chic feel.
- German Glass Glitter: This special glitter provides a truly authentic vintage sparkle, different from modern craft glitter. A tiny sprinkle adds a magical touch, especially to the angel’s wings or hat.
- Sentiment or Words: Small printed words, quotes, or phrases can personalize your ornament and add a sweet message.
Step-by-Step Tutorial: Crafting Your Shabby Chic Angel Ornament
Now that you’ve gathered all your beautiful supplies, let’s dive into the creative process! Follow these simple steps to bring your vintage angel ornament to life.
Step 1: Selecting and Sizing Your Angel Graphic
First, find the perfect graphic from The Graphics Fairy that you wish to feature in your ornament. Once you’ve chosen your image, print it out. It’s crucial to print it at a size that will fit beautifully within your chosen frame or applique opening. It’s often a good idea to print a couple of test sizes if you’re unsure. As you can see in my example, my first printout was much too large, while the second one was just right for the frame.
Once you have the correctly sized graphic, carefully cut it out. Take your time to get a clean edge, as this will frame your angel beautifully.
Step 2: Preparing Your Frame Base
While you’re out treasure hunting at antique shops or thrift stores, always keep an eye out for charming vintage items like old wallpaper scraps, delicate lace, and various trims. These small finds are perfect for adding authentic shabby chic details to your crafts. For this project, you’ll be using your selected frame or applique as the base.
Step 3: Creating a Decorative Backing
Take your frame or applique and place it onto your chosen piece of decorative paper (like vintage wallpaper). Carefully trace around the outer edge of the frame. It doesn’t need to be absolutely perfect, but ensure that the traced shape is slightly larger than the opening of your frame. This will allow it to be securely glued to the back of the frame, with the beautiful pattern showing through the front opening. I used a pen in my demonstration so you could clearly see the shape, but a pencil is generally recommended for tracing, as it’s easier to hide if your cuts aren’t perfectly precise.
Now, carefully cut out the traced wallpaper shape. Once cut, apply adhesive to the back edges of your frame. Position the wallpaper piece onto the back, ensuring the pretty side of the paper is facing towards the front of the frame. This will create a lovely backdrop for your angel. I used a hot glue gun for quick adhesion, but tacky glue works just as well, offering a bit more repositioning time. Doesn’t this repurposed applique already look like a perfect little frame?
Step 4: Arranging Your Angel and Embellishments
With your decorative backing in place, it’s time for the most exciting part: arranging your angel graphic and any other chosen elements. Take a moment to experiment with the placement of your cut-out angel within the frame. If you’re adding words or sentiments, position those as well, finding a layout that feels balanced and aesthetically pleasing. Once you’re happy with the arrangement, begin gluing the pieces into place. For this step, I prefer using tacky glue, as it allows for minor adjustments before fully setting.
Step 5: Adding a Touch of Sparkle (Optional but Recommended)
To give your angel ornament that extra special, vintage-inspired glow, consider adding a hint of German Glass Glitter. After the glue from the previous step has set, apply a very small amount of tacky glue to specific areas on your angel – perhaps her delicate wings, the trim on her hat, or her muffs. Then, gently sprinkle a tiny amount of German Glass Glitter over these glued areas. Remember, with this type of glitter, less is often more. You want just enough to catch the light and add a subtle shimmer, highlighting her features without overpowering the image.
Step 6: Attaching the Hanger and Finishing Touches
Congratulations, your beautiful angel piece is almost complete! To make it ready for hanging, simply cut a piece of lace trim, ribbon, or even rustic twine to your desired length. Form it into a loop and securely glue the ends to the back of your ornament. If you’d like the back to look just as neat and pretty as the front, simply cut out another piece of your decorative wallpaper or paper, slightly larger than the frame, and glue it over the lace ends and the back of the frame. This provides a clean, finished appearance from all angles.
And just like that, you’ve created a stunning shabby chic Christmas angel ornament!
Beyond the Tree: Versatile Ways to Display Your Shabby Chic Angel
While this angelic creation makes a truly exquisite Christmas tree ornament, its charm extends far beyond the branches. These handmade beauties offer a plethora of display possibilities, allowing you to infuse vintage elegance throughout your home all year round:
- Charming Wall Art: Group several different angel ornaments or other vintage-themed crafts to create a unique gallery wall, adding a touch of romance to any room.
- Thoughtful Gift Topper: Elevate a wrapped present by tying one of these ornaments to the bow. It’s a gift within a gift, adding an extra layer of personalization and charm.
- Door Handle Adornment: Hang it from a vintage door handle or cabinet knob for a whimsical and unexpected decorative accent.
- Wreath or Garland Embellishment: Incorporate your angel into a larger holiday wreath or garland, allowing it to become a focal point amidst greenery and berries.
- Hostess Gift: A handmade ornament is a perfect and heartfelt hostess gift during the holiday season or any time you want to show appreciation.
- Nursery Decor: A soft-hued angel ornament can be a gentle and sweet addition to a baby’s nursery, bringing a sense of peace and vintage charm.
Tips for Achieving an Authentic Shabby Chic Aesthetic
To truly capture the essence of shabby chic in your crafts, consider these design principles:
- Embrace Imperfection: Shabby chic celebrates the worn, the aged, and the slightly distressed. Don’t strive for perfection; instead, appreciate the character that comes with a handmade item.
- Soft Color Palettes: Think pastels, muted tones, creams, whites, and gentle grays. These colors evoke a sense of calm and romance.
- Mix Textures: Combine smooth paper with rough lace, shimmering glitter with matte finishes, and the hard frame with soft ribbons. This interplay adds visual interest.
- Incorporate Vintage Finds: True shabby chic often involves repurposing old items. Thrift store frames, vintage wallpaper, and antique lace are key ingredients.
- Layering: Don’t be afraid to layer elements. The wallpaper backing, the angel graphic, and any added words or trims create a richer, more complex look.
