Bonjour, it’s Stephanie from Smiling Sunlight! It is truly an honor to share my final journal project for this term as a member of The Graphics Fairy Design Team. For this creation, I delved deep into the rich archives of images from the Premium membership website, seeking inspiration that would resonate with both history and art. This particular junk journal centers around the captivating life of Aliénor of Aquitaine, or Eleanor as she is known in English. During my explorations of ancient civilizations, Eleanor consistently stood out as one of the most influential and formidable women of the Middle Ages. Her story is a testament to resilience, power, and intellect.
Born around 1122, Eleanor inherited immense wealth and vast territories at a very young age, making her one of the most powerful heiresses in Western Europe, controlling nearly half of Southern France. She was celebrated for her wisdom, intelligence, and a surprisingly modern outlook for her era. Her life was an extraordinary tapestry of royal connections; she was not only Queen of France but also Queen of England, and the mother of three kings, including the legendary Richard the Lionheart. The entire medieval theme, with its tales of kings, noble knights, elegant princesses, heraldic emblems, and enduring legends, provided a wonderfully rich playground for this journal. It allowed me to weave a narrative that is both historically grounded and creatively expansive.
As many of you know, I have a passion for incorporating interactive elements into my journals, often exploring the art of origami. For this project, I adapted a fascinating paper-folding technique that allows a beautifully collaged box to transform into a flat card, making it incredibly easy to store within the journal itself. This innovative flip-up collaged box display, combined with the epic story of Eleanor’s enduring legacy—represented through nine distinct portraits of queens and princesses—culminates in what I proudly present as “Alienor’s Treasure Box Journal.” It’s more than just a journal; it’s a portable museum of history and art, a true treasure chest of stories and creativity.
The main box cover is a testament to digital artistry, carefully designed to bring together symbolic elements linked directly to Queen Alienor. I digitally enhanced a fleur de lys pattern with elegant gold foil accents, and transformed a powerful lion emblem with a striking blue outline. Deep red and royal blue, two historically significant and powerful royal colors of the medieval era, were deliberately incorporated to evoke the grandeur and majesty of the period. To further enhance its authenticity and give it the rich texture of a medieval tapestry, I hand-stitched the frame with fine wool, adding a tangible sense of craftsmanship and historical depth. The knight card, another digitally adapted element, merges a majestic horse with relevant symbols, creating a dynamic piece that can stand proudly, much like a traditional place card, adding another interactive dimension to the journal.
The construction of the mini journal itself tells a story of resourcefulness and historical inspiration. Its cover and pages are crafted from recycled file folders, giving them a sturdy yet flexible base, complemented by beautifully printed tea-dyed paper which imparts an authentic aged appearance. The intricate folding methods used for medieval letters provided the primary inspiration for designing each page as a functional pocket, offering discrete spaces for treasured ephemera and personal notes. For the binding, I opted for a simple yet effective two-hole document binding technique, reflecting historical methods and maintaining the journal’s vintage aesthetic. The portrait of Queen Alienor gracing the cover of this mini journal is another highlight of digital artistry. I transformed a vibrant colored portrait into a timeless black and white image, then bestowed upon her a regal crown. A striking church window design was carefully adapted to serve as her frame, and the fleur de lys pattern was adorned with shimmering gold foil, elevating her presence to one of undeniable royalty and grace within this historic junk journal.
My passion for collage artistry often leads me to incorporate specific types of ephemera, with vintage labels and postage stamps being two absolute favorites. These elements add a rich layer of authenticity and character to any project. Inspired by the extensive resources on The Graphics Fairy Premium site, I embarked on a creative journey to craft my own authentic-looking French labels. This involved selecting beautiful French text snippets from various French ephemera image bundles and then seamlessly merging them with suitable label images, resulting in unique, historically resonant pieces. Similarly, individual postage stamp images were digitally arranged to form groups of three, designed to be easily torn apart, just like genuine stamps, providing a versatile and realistic touch to the journal. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that every piece of ephemera feels truly organic to the “Alienor’s Treasure Box” theme, enhancing its vintage charm and storytelling potential for any paper crafting enthusiast.
There’s an undeniable joy and inspiration that comes from having ready-to-use, perfectly sized, and authentically aged images at your fingertips, isn’t there? This realization led me to create my own collage chapbooks, drawing inspiration from the real chapbooks of history. Chapbooks, small and affordably produced books popular in the 19th century, made reading materials accessible to the common people. My collage chapbooks are designed to be charming and decorative in their own right, perfect for display within the journal, adding a unique, historical touch. However, their true versatility lies in their functionality: whenever I require a vintage page for a new collage, I can simply tear one off and glue it into place, much like I did within the main box or at the back of the journal. This innovative approach offers both aesthetic appeal and practical utility for any crafter seeking to expand their vintage ephemera collection.
The concept of these folded flat boxes has been an intriguing idea simmering in my mind for quite some time, and I am absolutely delighted with how they have materialized in this project. Their innovative design and practical application have truly inspired me to continue exploring this technique further in future creative endeavors. Each small, meticulously collaged box is not only a miniature work of art in itself, but it also boasts incredible versatility. They can be proudly displayed in their three-dimensional form, adding depth and interest to any page or setting. Alternatively, for convenient storage or transportation, they can be effortlessly folded flat, allowing them to be tucked neatly into an envelope or seamlessly integrated within the pages of a journal. This dual functionality makes them a truly unique and engaging element for any junk journal or paper crafting enthusiast.
It has been an immense honor and a truly great pleasure to embark on this creative journal adventure and share it with all of you. My heartfelt thanks go out to The Graphics Fairy for providing such an incredible platform and an endless source of inspiration, as well as to all the passionate crafters who have consistently supported my work and shared their enthusiasm.
