I’ll step aside now and let Alessandra guide you through her incredible project, sharing the passion and vision behind her Spring Garden Junk Journal.
Hi everyone! For this special design team project, I embarked on creating a vintage spring-, garden-, and floral-themed junk journal. My aim was to craft something truly delicate and lovely, diverging slightly from my usual color palette to embrace softer, more pastel tones. This journal is a celebration of nature, featuring an abundance of pressed flowers, intricate floral decorations, and charming insect motifs. The foundation of this piece is an antique French book cover, which beautifully sets the vintage tone with its elegant image of a woman seated beside a little girl.
Turning to the first spread, the left page immediately captures attention with a captivating vintage wallpaper image sourced from the “Tattered Paper Treasures” bundle, offering a rich, textured backdrop. Layered upon this, I crafted a charming postcard journaling card, featuring a lovely black and white picture of a girl from the “Chelsea Flower Show” kit. This combination creates a beautiful contrast and a sense of nostalgic elegance. On the opposing right page, the theme of unique paper continues with a journaling card made from original wallpaper. To enhance its antique allure, I carefully distressed various ephemera images from “The Plant Women” bundle, making them appear aged and cherished, perfectly complementing the overall vintage garden theme.
This next spread continues our journey into the spring garden, with the right page graced by a delightful vintage wallpaper image from the “Spring Meadows Endpapers” collection. This serene background provides the perfect canvas for a charming flip-out element, revealing a lovely image of vibrant flowers from the “British Flower Guide” kit. This interactive feature adds an element of surprise and discovery to the journal. On the left, I designed a unique journaling card, prominently featuring a classic greenhouse image from the “Chelsea Flower Show” bundle. This architectural detail adds an intriguing counterpoint to the natural flora, and a small, meticulously placed piece of handmade paper adds a tactile and rustic touch, enhancing the overall organic feel of the page.
Moving through the journal, this spread elegantly incorporates elements of nature and intricate illustration. On the left, a soothing blue wallpaper background from the “Delicate Endpapers” bundle sets a serene mood. This is beautifully accented by a clever tuck spot, ingeniously crafted with a delicate butterfly image, perfect for holding small notes or ephemera. Also on this page, a captivating image from “The Beekeeper’s Cottage” bundle adds a touch of rustic charm and storytelling. The right page is a tribute to the beauty of entomology, featuring a printed butterfly page from the “Entomologist Field Guide.” The detailed illustrations and classic scientific aesthetic provide a wonderful contrast to the softer, more artistic elements, creating a balanced and visually rich composition.
This delightful spread continues to immerse us in the essence of a spring garden, with thoughtful details that celebrate planting and growth. On the left, the background is a beautiful vintage wallpaper image, once again from “The Beekeeper’s Cottage” bundle, which perfectly grounds the page with its earthy tones and classic patterns. A charming flip-out element, crafted from a “Seed Catalog Image,” adds an interactive layer, evoking the anticipation of a flourishing garden. On the right, I’ve incorporated a delicate corner pocket made from translucent vellum paper, adding a subtle touch of elegance. This pocket features a finely stenciled texture detail, enhancing its visual appeal. Tucked inside is a lovely journaling card, framed with exquisite floral patterns and adorned with a piece of genuine vintage lace, creating a harmonious blend of botanical beauty and antique charm.
This particular spread offers a multi-sensory experience, deeply rooted in the themes of a fragrant spring garden. On the right, the background is subtly provided by “Delicate Endpapers,” setting a gentle tone. This serves as a backdrop for a truly beautiful journaling card from the “Provence” bundle, featuring a serene lavender-colored landscape. What makes this card truly special is the thoughtful addition of real lavender seeds, which infuse the page with a delicate, calming fragrance, engaging more than just the visual sense. On the left, another background from “Delicate Endpapers” provides continuity. Here, a charming flip-out element is created with a blue frame image from “The Photographer” bundle, its center thoughtfully decorated with delicate, real pressed flowers, creating a truly personal and natural touch that enhances the journal’s botanical narrative.
Continuing our exploration of the natural world within this junk journal, this spread highlights the beauty of avian life and antique charm. On the right, we find a captivating nature eggs page from the “Forget Me Not” kit, its intricate details offering a glimpse into the delicate wonders of spring. A small, carefully placed piece of wallpaper subtly decorates the bottom, adding a gentle touch of texture and visual interest. The left page is a testament to timeless elegance, featuring a genuine vintage music sheet as its background. Layered upon this, a meticulously crafted card showcases a lovely bird image from “The Attic Paper Stash” bundle. This combination of musical history and natural imagery creates a harmonious and deeply reflective page, inviting contemplation.
This next spread beautifully marries the charm of classic botanical illustrations with creative interactive elements. On the right, a page directly sourced from a vintage floral book provides an authentic and rich background, its historical beauty speaking for itself. I enhanced this page with a delicate butterfly tuck spot, a subtle yet charming detail perfect for securing small keepsakes or secret notes. On the left, I designed a slightly smaller, layered page, beginning with a textured background from the “Tattered Paper Treasures” bundle, which adds a wonderful sense of age and depth. Upon this, I placed a tiny, yet captivating, card from the “Mini Ephemera” kit. This thoughtful arrangement of elements creates an intimate space within the journal, inviting closer inspection and appreciation for the smaller details.
This deeply textured and multi-layered spread epitomizes the creative potential of junk journaling, combining diverse elements into a cohesive garden narrative. On the left, a tranquil blue wallpaper background from “Delicate Endpapers” provides a serene foundation. Upon this, a unique tuck spot has been created using a charming garden maze image from “The Garden Ephemera” bundle, adding a playful, exploratory touch. The true highlight here is a small, translucent glassine bag, carefully tucked into place, containing real pressed flowers. This not only adds a beautiful visual element but also a tactile and organic dimension to the page. On the right, a piece of authentic vintage ledger paper serves as the background, its historical lines offering a structured yet aged feel. This page is adorned with a ‘floating’ pocket, ingeniously designed to hold a beautifully crafted card. This card is a miniature collage itself, made from a piece of wallpaper image from the “Tattered Paper Treasures 2” kit, artfully combined with other vintage papers and delicate lace, creating a rich tapestry of textures and patterns.
Bringing the themes of pollination and delicate garden life to the forefront, this spread offers a beautiful dialogue between flora and fauna. For the right page, I utilized an original vintage floral page from my personal collection, instantly imbuing the journal with authentic historical charm. To this, I added a delightful card featuring intricate images of bees, sourced from “The Beekeeper’s Cottage” bundle, a poignant reminder of nature’s vital workers. The left page features a rustic background from “Tattered Paper Treasures,” providing a warm, aged feel. A pocket, thoughtfully crafted from another piece of vintage ledger paper, adds an element of discovery. Inside this pocket, a truly endearing card awaits, showcasing an illustration of three moths, creating a subtle yet powerful connection to the nocturnal side of the garden and the often-overlooked beauty of these delicate insects.
Concluding our visual tour of this enchanting Spring Garden Junk Journal, this final spread offers a harmonious blend of botanical beauty, architectural charm, and historical touches. On the left, we are once again treated to the authentic beauty of another vintage original floral page, its timeless patterns and faded colors speaking volumes of bygone eras. On the right, an ingenious flip-out element has been crafted using a captivating image of a quaint house from “The Lacemaker” bundle. This architectural detail adds a cozy, homely feel, suggesting a peaceful cottage nestled within a flourishing garden. To further enhance its vintage allure, I meticulously decorated this flip with delicate pressed flowers, providing a genuine connection to nature, and an authentic French stamp, adding a touch of international history and refined elegance. Each element on these pages is carefully chosen and placed, culminating in a journal that is not just a collection of images, but a curated story of spring’s timeless beauty.
