A compact powder room in a modern bachelor pad receives a complete style overhaul, meticulously designed in a monochromatic navy blue palette to exude modern masculine sophistication.
There’s nothing quite like the excitement of a bathroom remodel, especially when it results in such a stunning transformation! While a “surprise” renovation might usually imply a delightful new project, in this case, it stemmed from a less-than-ideal situation: an unforeseen water leak. Much like our own unexpected bathroom woes last year, this incident for a dear friend, Wes, presented an unwelcome challenge but ultimately paved the way for an incredible design opportunity.
Though the initial cause was certainly a headache, the end result is nothing short of spectacular. This project allowed us to delve into a distinctive aesthetic, crafting a space that is not only highly functional but also a true reflection of contemporary masculine style. Witnessing the remarkable change from its dated past to its current chic persona makes every unexpected hurdle worthwhile.
The Bachelor Pad Powder Room: Before & After

Meet Wes, one of our closest friends, who was completely unaware that his pre-renovation powder room photo – complete with him in it – would be showcased to a vast online audience. (Apologies, Wes, but this transformation truly speaks for itself!)

How to Make a Small Powder Room Look Bigger: Smart Design Strategies
Wes boasts a truly impressive bachelor pad nestled in the vibrant uptown Charlotte area. This project presented a delightful opportunity for me to step beyond my usual design comfort zone and craft a uniquely modern, monochromatic navy blue aesthetic within the confines of his incredibly small powder room, tucked away under the stairs.
Last fall, while Wes was away for several months on work, we had the privilege of overseeing the unexpected renovation of this tiny washroom. The contractors have now impeccably completed their work, bringing our vision to life. The space is undeniably minuscule; frankly, it’s a feat that I managed to maneuver my camera to capture these images! However, I deployed every design trick and optical illusion technique I know to ensure this compact space not only feels more expansive but also radiates a distinctive, sophisticated character.

But before we dive into the details of the transformation, let’s take a moment to appreciate the previous grandeur: a vibrant purple toilet, paired with those unforgettable sponge-painted walls. Truly, a testament to bygone eras of interior design! The contrast makes the current transformation all the more striking and satisfying.

1. Paint Trim and Walls the Same Color and Sheen for a Seamless Look
One of the most effective strategies for visually enlarging a small room is to eliminate harsh breaks in color. You might recall when we applied this exact principle to our neighbors’ small bedroom for their teen girls, painting everything in a single, cohesive hue. We’ve replicated that successful technique here, choosing to paint the walls and all the trim in the same rich navy blue. This monochromatic approach blurs the boundaries of the room, preventing the eye from stopping at each architectural element. Instead, it creates a continuous visual flow, tricking the brain into perceiving a larger, more expansive space.
For those truly daring, extending this unified color scheme to the ceiling can amplify the effect even further. In hindsight, I wish we had taken that bold step here and painted the ceiling in the same striking navy blue. It would have enveloped the room in a complete color wash, creating an even more immersive and seemingly boundless environment, perfect for a cozy yet sophisticated powder room.

2. Choose Satin or Semi-Gloss Sheen for Enhanced Light Reflection
Beyond the choice of color, the paint’s sheen plays a pivotal role in manipulating how light interacts with a small space. By opting for a paint finish with a higher sheen, such as satin or semi-gloss, you introduce a subtle reflective quality to the walls. This reflectivity helps bounce available light around the room, instantly making the space feel brighter, more open, and consequently, larger than its actual dimensions. For Wes’s powder room, we selected a satin sheen, which provided the ideal balance of subtle luminosity without being overly glossy.
Furthermore, satin or semi-gloss paints are not just about aesthetics; they are incredibly practical, especially in high-moisture environments like bathrooms. Their smoother, less porous surface makes them significantly more resistant to water stains, humidity, and mildew compared to flatter finishes like eggshell or matte. This also means they are much easier to wipe clean, an essential consideration for a frequently used powder room, ensuring the walls maintain their fresh, polished look with minimal effort.

3. Use Gloss Tile as a Focal Wall to Elevate and Expand the Space
Building on the principle of light reflection, incorporating gloss tile is another masterful way to create an illusion of space in a compact powder room. Just like a shinier paint sheen, the reflective surface of gloss tile actively bounces light, making the walls appear to recede and expanding the visual footprint of the room. This effect is particularly potent when used on a strategic focal wall, such as behind the vanity.
In Wes’s powder room, we opted for a striking wall of linear stacked tile with a glossy finish. This choice not only brightens the space but also serves to draw the eye upwards, creating a perception of greater ceiling height. The clean, elongated lines of the stacked tile infuse the room with an edgy, modern aesthetic that perfectly complements the masculine style of a bachelor pad. It’s a design element that marries form and function, adding texture, visual interest, and a sense of refined cool to the overall scheme.

4. Choose Light Colored Flooring for an Airy Foundation
While the walls in Wes’s powder room embrace a deep, sophisticated navy, the flooring strategy takes a different approach to maximize perceived space. By selecting white or other light-colored tile for the floor, we introduced an element that visually opens up the room from the ground up. This lighter foundation reflects light, adding to the overall brightness and creating an open, airy feeling that contrasts beautifully with the rich wall color. The light floor acts as a visual anchor, making the room feel less confined and more expansive.
For Wes’s space, I specifically chose a weathered patterned tile. This wasn’t just for aesthetics; it was a highly practical decision tailored for a bachelor pad. The subtly worn and vintage appearance of the tile is remarkably effective at camouflaging any future dirt or grime. Unlike pristine, solid-colored light tiles that show every speck, this patterned design ensures that the space looks clean and well-maintained with less frequent deep cleaning. It’s a smart blend of style, light reflection, and low-maintenance functionality.

5. Use Dark Paint Colors to Add Space and Sophistication in a Small Powder Room
Perhaps the most counterintuitive, yet incredibly effective, design trick for small spaces is to embrace dark colors. Contrary to the popular belief that only white can make a room feel larger, painting a small, windowless room a deep hue like black or navy blue can actually create profound depth and an illusion of boundless space. This phenomenon occurs because dark paint colors tend to recede visually, making the walls appear further away than they physically are. Instead of feeling boxed in, the room transforms into a sophisticated, almost atmospheric “jewel box.”
In Wes’s powder room, this principle was paramount. We bathed the walls in Benjamin Moore Polo Blue, a magnificent, deep navy. In a room devoid of natural light, this dark color doesn’t absorb light and make the space feel oppressive; instead, it eliminates visual boundaries. The edges of the room become less distinct, creating a sense of infinite depth that can feel surprisingly expansive and incredibly luxurious. It turns a small, utilitarian space into a dramatic, enveloping experience, perfectly suited for a modern bachelor pad’s sense of style.

6. Hang Interesting Art to Carry the Masculine Bachelor Pad Vibe and Add Personality
Art is not just decoration; it’s a powerful tool for injecting personality, setting a mood, and even enhancing the perceived scale of a room. In a compact space like this powder room, every piece of decor has to earn its place. To truly cement the masculine, bachelor pad aesthetic, we curated a selection of art that speaks to Wes’s interests and adds a touch of playful sophistication.
Above the toilet, I absolutely had to hang a black and white print from “The Big Lebowski.” Why not? It’s a bachelor pad, after all, and “The Dude” embodies the ultimate, laid-back bachelor persona. This piece instantly adds a cool, irreverent focal point and a subtle nod to pop culture. On the opposite wall, we incorporated vintage Army football prints. This personal touch honors Wes’s background as an Army veteran and acknowledges the significant role football plays in his condo’s social scene. These pieces aren’t just generic art; they are extensions of Wes’s identity, making the room uniquely his.
The thoughtful placement of unique, meaningful art goes a long way in making a big statement, even in the smallest of rooms. It adds layers of interest, breaks up the monochromatic scheme with engaging details, and transforms the powder room from a purely functional space into one that feels deeply personal and stylish.

While I meticulously crafted the design vision and mood boards for this project, the contractors were the true heroes who brought it all to fruition. Robert and I can’t take credit for the actual physical labor, but witnessing the transformation – seeing our design concepts materialize before our very eyes – was incredibly rewarding and inspiring. It’s always a thrill to see how thoughtful planning and expert execution can revitalize a space.
This experience truly sparked a new creative ambition within me. Who knows? Perhaps one day, given our proximity to the city, I’ll get the chance to design an entire modern urban loft. It would be an exciting departure from our home’s more traditional style, allowing for even more bold and contemporary design expressions. Adding that dream project to the bucket list for sure!
