While this guide will walk you through making charming paper clay ornaments, remember that this versatile recipe is your blank canvas for anything you can dream up.

You might already be familiar with the concept of paper clay. It’s a beloved material in the DIY, crafting, and fine art communities for its unique properties and adaptability. Our homemade air-dry version allows you to mold, sculpt, and form it into an astonishing array of shapes and items, from intricate ornaments and delicate embellishments to functional bowls and artistic masks. Why invest in store-bought options when you can create a superior, personalized clay right in your kitchen?

Once dry, this DIY paper clay boasts a natural, creamy off-white color, providing an ideal base for further artistic expression. It readily accepts paint, stains, glazes, and even rubber stamps. But the real magic, especially for my Graphics Fairy friends, is its exceptional surface for decoupaging or transferring your favorite vintage images! The possibilities are truly endless, transforming simple paper pulp into cherished keepsakes and stunning decorative pieces.

Essential Materials for Your Homemade Paper Clay

Gathering your ingredients and tools is the first step to a successful crafting session. Here’s what you’ll need to create your own batch of versatile, air-dry paper clay:

  • 1/2 Cup Paper Pulp: Derived from approximately 1/4 to 1/2 roll of white, lotion-free toilet paper. You’ll start with about 1 ounce (25-28 g) of dry TP, which will yield roughly 4 ounces (112 g) when wet and processed into pulp.
  • Digital Food Scale: Essential for accurate measurements, especially for the paper pulp.
  • Warm Water: A large bowl full will be needed for soaking the toilet paper.
  • Old Cotton Napkin or Handkerchief: Perfect for squeezing out excess water from the paper pulp.
  • 1/2 Cup White School Glue: Like Elmer’s School Glue, this acts as the primary binder, holding your clay together.
  • 1/2 Cup Drywall Joint Compound: Any brand works well, except DAP. This ingredient gives the clay its smooth texture and strength once dry.
  • 1/2 Cup Cornstarch: Contributes to the clay’s smooth consistency and helps prevent sticking.
  • 1 cup All-purpose Flour: Divided in half; it provides bulk and workability.
  • 3 Tablespoons Mineral or Baby Oil: Adds flexibility to the clay, making it easier to knead and preventing it from drying too quickly during handling.
  • Large Mixing Bowl: Designate one specifically for craft use.
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons: For precise ingredient portions.
  • Votive Candle Holder: A sturdy, flat-bottomed one works perfectly for shaping ornaments.
  • Small Straw: A round coffee stir straw is ideal for creating clean holes in your ornaments.
  • Soft Artist’s Brush: For dusting off cornstarch after drying.
  • Fine-Grit Sandpaper: (e.g., 150 grit) For smoothing edges after the clay has dried, if desired.
  • Wire Rack: For proper air circulation during the drying process.

Step-by-Step Directions: Crafting Your Easy Paper Clay

Preparing the Paper Pulp

The foundation of great paper clay begins with perfectly prepared paper pulp. Follow these steps carefully to ensure the right consistency:

Step 1: Weigh Your Paper. Begin by accurately weighing out approximately 1 ounce (25-28 grams) of dry toilet paper. Using a digital scale ensures precision, which is key for a consistent clay mixture.

Step 2: Soak the TP. Place the weighed toilet paper into a large bowl filled with warm water. Allow it to soak for a few minutes. This initial soaking helps the fibers break down more easily.

Step 3: Break it Down. With your hands, gently swirl and break the paper apart. You’ll notice it starting to disintegrate into smaller pieces. Continue until it’s thoroughly saturated and mostly broken down.

Step 4: Drain Excess Water. Once the paper is completely soaked and pulpy, carefully drain off as much excess water as possible from the bowl.

Step 5: Squeeze for Dryness. Transfer the wet pulp to the center of an old cotton napkin or handkerchief. These fabrics are ideal because they’re absorbent yet sturdy. Gather the cloth around the pulp.

Step 6: Wring it Out. Tightly squeeze the cloth-encased pulp until no more water drips out. This step is crucial for achieving the correct clay consistency; too much water will make your clay sloppy and difficult to work with.

Step 7: Measure the Pulp. Remove the now-drier pulp from the cloth and measure out 1/2 cup. At this stage, the pulp should weigh approximately 4 ounces (112 grams). If you have leftover pulp, don’t discard it! This extra pulp is wonderful for adding texture to other art projects or for making handmade paper sheets. Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for a few days, or freeze it for longer storage.

Step 8: Break Up Lumps. Place the measured pulp into your large mixing bowl. Take a moment to tear apart any large lumps with your hands. It’s important that the pieces are about pea-size or smaller before you introduce other ingredients. Trust me, investing this time now will result in a much smoother, more workable clay and a more enjoyable crafting experience later on! WINK!

Mixing the Ingredients for Perfect Paper Clay

Now that your paper pulp is ready, it’s time to transform it into the magical paper clay:

Step 9: Add the Glue. Pour the white school glue into the bowl with the paper pulp.

Step 10: Incorporate by Hand. Get your hands in there and thoroughly work the glue into the paper fibers. It will feel quite sticky at this stage, but embracing the mess is part of the fun! Ensuring the glue is well distributed is essential for the clay’s binding properties.

Step 11: Introduce Drywall Compound and Dry Ingredients. Next, add the drywall joint compound and mix it into the mixture by hand. After that, add the cornstarch and the mineral or baby oil. Keep half of the all-purpose flour aside for later. I find that mixing by hand is the best method, as it allows you to feel the consistency and ensure everything is perfectly combined. DISCLAIMER: While some recipes suggest using a stand mixer with a dough hook, I prefer not to risk getting craft materials in my kitchen appliances. If you choose to use a mixer, proceed with extreme caution: DO NOT overwork your mixer. If the mixture feels too heavy or resistant, stop immediately! You definitely don’t want to burn out your motor. The hand-mixing process, though a bit messier, is truly therapeutic and gives you complete control over the texture.

Step 12: Adjust Consistency with Flour. Gradually mix in the remaining 1/2 cup of flour, adding it 1/4 cup at a time. The goal is to achieve a consistency that feels right to you – firm enough to hold its shape but still pliable and easy to work with.

Step 13: Prepare for Kneading. Lightly dust your work surface or the bowl with a little more flour or cornstarch. This will prevent the clay from sticking during the kneading process.

Step 14: Knead to Perfection. Turn the mixture out onto your prepared surface and begin to knead it thoroughly. Just like bread dough, kneading develops the consistency, making the clay smooth and uniform. Continue kneading until it reaches your desired texture – it should be soft, pliable, and non-sticky. This recipe yields a generous handful of paper clay, enough for multiple projects!

To test if your paper clay is ready, pinch a small amount between your fingers. If it holds a thin piece without tearing or crumbling, it has the perfect consistency for shaping into ornaments and other delicate items.

Shaping Your Paper Clay Creations: A Creative Approach to Ornaments

My initial vision for round disk ornaments, perfect for decoupaging Graphics Fairy images, involved rolling out the air-dry paper clay like cookie dough and cutting it with cookie cutters. However, after what felt like hours of trying (and truly, I mean hours!), I learned a valuable lesson: the paper fibers in the clay prevent a crisp, clean cut, even with a sharp knife, as you can see in the photos below. INSERT SAD FACE. But here at The Graphics Fairy, we believe in creative problem-solving! Thanks to some brilliant brainstorming with my daughter and husband, we found a fantastic workaround. YAY!

Embracing Imperfections: When Things Go Wrong, Get Creative!

Instead of wrestling with rolling and cutting, I decided to adopt a method similar to how I make peanut butter cookies, which yielded wonderfully rustic and charming results.

Step 17: Roll into Balls. Pinch off about a heaping teaspoon of paper clay. Roll it into a smooth ball between the palms of your hands. Aim for consistency in size if you want uniform ornaments, but don’t stress over perfection.

Step 18: Flatten and Shape. Place the clay ball onto a hard, clean surface. Take a sturdy votive candle holder (one with a flat bottom works best) and use its base to gently smash the clay ball flat. TIP: Be careful not to press so hard that the clay spreads wider than the votive itself. Once flattened, place the open end of the votive candle holder over the smashed clay. Gently move the votive in a circular motion several times. This action helps to refine the edges and gives the clay a lovely, rounded, disk-like shape. It becomes surprisingly easy and intuitive once you get the hang of it!

Step 19: Appreciate Handmade Character. It’s important to remember that paper clay, especially homemade, will not create perfectly uniform shapes every single time. And that’s absolutely okay! These small inconsistencies and charming imperfections are entirely normal when making handmade items, and they truly add to the unique character and appeal of your finished pieces. Embrace them as a sign of genuine craftsmanship!

Step 20: Create Hanging Holes and Dry. While the clay is still soft, use a small straw (a round coffee stir straw is ideal for this) to pierce a hole through the top of each clay round. This hole will be used for hanging your ornaments. Carefully transfer your shaped pieces to a wire rack, which allows for maximum airflow and even drying. Let them air dry for several hours or preferably overnight. I recommend turning them periodically to ensure they dry thoroughly and evenly on all sides, preventing warping.

Step 21: Clean Up. Once your ornaments are completely dry and hardened, use a soft artist’s brush to gently brush off any excess cornstarch that may be clinging to the surface.

Step 22: Smooth if Desired. If you prefer a smoother finish, you can lightly sand the edges and surfaces with fine-grit sandpaper (like 150 grit). This step is entirely optional and depends on the aesthetic you’re aiming for.

Adding the Finishing Touches to Your Paper Clay Masterpieces

Your beautifully crafted paper clay ornaments are now fully dry and ready for their artistic transformation! This is where your personal style truly shines.

The smooth, creamy surface of the dried clay is absolutely perfect for decoupaging or transferring your favorite Graphics Fairy images. Imagine classic vintage botanicals, charming antique holiday illustrations, or elegant typography gracing your handmade pieces. Of course, the creative options don’t stop there! You could also paint them with acrylics, watercolors, or even spray paint for a uniform base. Consider rubber stamping designs, adding glitter, or distressing them for an aged, antique look. I’m confident you’ll come up with countless brilliant ideas to make these ornaments uniquely yours!

As mentioned before, you may notice some slight inconsistencies in the surface texture or shape, which is a natural characteristic of handmade paper clay. Far from being flaws, these minor variations actually add wonderful interest and authentic charm to your final piece. Over my many years of crafting, I’ve truly learned to embrace and celebrate these “imperfections,” viewing them as unique marks of a lovingly handmade item. They contribute character and tell a story that mass-produced items simply cannot replicate.

I’m already envisioning making a fresh batch of these beautiful paper clay creations for my Thanksgiving Gratitude Tree this year, and perhaps even some delicate decorations for my little Easter Tree.
