Meet the Artist: Sara Favel of Vintage Beauty CA

Hello everyone! I am absolutely thrilled to be here, sharing my very first design team project with The Graphics Fairy community. My name is Sara Favel, and you can find my creative endeavors under the handle VintagebeautyCA on both Instagram and YouTube. The “CA” proudly stands for Canada, representing my roots and the inspiration I draw from my surroundings. It’s such a joy to connect with fellow crafters and vintage lovers, and I’m incredibly excited to showcase this journal and many more designs in the future. Sharing this passion and meeting kindred spirits is truly rewarding!

The Vision: Inspiration Behind the Victorian Floral Theme

The genesis of this Victorian floral-themed junk journal began with a discovery within the “Pink, Gold and Green” ephemera bundle on The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership site. The moment I encountered the exquisite antique end paper images in that collection, I was instantly captivated. There’s something inherently charming and historically rich about antique end papers, and I knew immediately that they would form the foundational aesthetic of this journal. They offered a perfect starting point for developing a sophisticated and harmonious color scheme.

Once the core color palette was established—a delicate interplay of soft pinks, muted golds, and subtle greens—I sought to introduce elements that would provide beautiful pops of color and visual interest. My choice naturally gravitated towards authentic Victorian imagery. This era is renowned for its intricate illustrations and vibrant depictions, making Victorian scraps, lush roses, and charming trade cards ideal focal points. These elements not only add splashes of color but also infuse the journal with an undeniable sense of history and romance, creating a captivating journey through its pages.

Journal Specifications and Customizable Covers

This particular Victorian Floral Junk Journal is thoughtfully designed, measuring a comfortable 7.5 inches by 6 inches, and boasts approximately 128 pages. The total page count for my journals is always carefully considered, depending on the variety of papers I incorporate—ranging from shorter pages and thicker cardstocks to unique specialty papers. I’ve found that including 11 pages per signature strikes the perfect balance for my journaling style, offering ample space without making the journal feel overly bulky.

A distinctive feature of this journal is the provision of two unique options for the front cover, allowing the future owner to personalize their experience. The first option is a beautifully collaged vintage envelope, adorned with a striking blue cross—an image you can easily find by searching “cross” on The Graphics Fairy site. This envelope ingeniously houses a blank tag crafted from authentic antique manuscript paper, providing a touch of historical elegance and a ready space for personal expression. The second choice offers a genuine Victorian trade card, a delightful piece of ephemera that instantly transports one back to the charm and artistry of the Victorian era. Each option offers a distinct aesthetic, ensuring the journal truly reflects its owner’s preference.

Crafting the Cover and Spine: A Textile Tapestry

The foundation of this journal’s cover is an old Reader’s Digest book, chosen for its beautiful aqua color speckled with charming little red stars. This unexpected base provided a lovely vintage canvas, which I then enhanced with a carefully curated selection of fabrics. My aim was to select textiles that would not only complement the journal’s exterior but also harmonize with the soft tones of its inner pages. I gathered a diverse collection including antique and vintage French fabrics, rustic barkcloth, elegant Liberty fabric (perfectly aligning with the floral theme), and even some nostalgic old feedsack material.

These chosen fabrics were then meticulously slow stitched together onto a larger piece of fabric. This intricate stitching technique, often associated with mindfulness and heritage crafts, allowed me to create a durable and aesthetically rich spine. This fabric piece extends approximately 2 inches along the spine and wraps about 1.5 inches over the front and back covers, creating a seamless and sturdy enclosure. To add a final touch of refined elegance, I incorporated delicate embroidered designs, carefully sourced from vintage handkerchiefs and antique table linens. The result is a tactile and visually stunning cover that invites touch and closer inspection, setting the stage for the treasures held within.

Inner Sanctum: Endpapers and Interactive Pockets

Stepping inside, the inner and back covers greet you with a beautiful floral end paper. Originally a dark purple (found by searching “purple white block print”), I digitally enlarged and color-edited this image to achieve a softer, harmonious pink hue, ensuring it perfectly matched the overall delicate aesthetic of the journal. For the very first page, I selected a stunning marble paper from the “Pink, Gold and Green” ephemera bundle. Again, I gently adjusted its color and hue to create a soft, muted pink tone, providing a smooth and inviting transition into the journal’s contents.

An exquisite fabric pocket, crafted from beautiful old French fabric and adorned with antique trimming along the bottom, adds both functionality and charm. This pocket is not merely decorative; it thoughtfully houses a hand-painted altered flash card and several genuine antique ephemera pieces, offering delightful surprises and ample space for the owner to add their own cherished mementos. These initial pages set a tone of elegance and anticipation, promising a journey filled with vintage beauty and creative possibility.

Enhancing Journaling Space with Vintage Documents

On the left-hand page, I incorporated a French script document, easily found by searching “script ephemera” on The Graphics Fairy site. By utilizing an editing program to enlarge the image, I was able to focus on approximately half of the original document. This deliberate choice allowed the elegant script to appear larger and more prominent, while crucially providing more abundant journaling space. It’s a technique I applied to all the invoices and script ephemera pieces throughout the journal, maximizing their aesthetic appeal and functional utility.

This creative approach offers immense freedom. As a creator, I can select and use only a specific portion of an image, knowing that I can return to the same original image later and extract a different section, creating an entirely new look for another page or project. On the right side, an authentic French manuscript is transformed into an interactive folded flip-out. This element is carefully hinged to an adjacent page and securely sewn into the signature, adding an engaging, interactive dimension and significantly expanding the available writing surface. This spread is further enhanced with a delicate fussy-cut floral image (sourced from the free site) and a charming printed vellum pocket, created using elements from the “Pink, Gold and Green” bundle, designed to house authentic tea cards and exquisite Victorian calling cards or trade cards, inviting exploration and discovery.

Romantic Doves and Functional Pockets

This particular spread radiates a sense of vintage romance, centered around a beautiful dove image from the “Ephemera Romance” collection. I meticulously fussy cut the dove to evoke the classic aesthetic of a Victorian scrap, giving it a delicate, hand-cut appearance that feels deeply authentic. Complementing this, a French receipt image was ingeniously repurposed to create a charming and practical pocket. I have a particular fondness for using antique receipt images in this way; their inherent beauty and historical script make them ideal for creating unique, functional storage elements.

This delightful pocket is designed to hold a variety of precious items, including antique book pages, a translucent glassine envelope, and a beautiful floral journal card. Each piece contributes to the layered texture and storytelling potential of the journal, inviting the owner to explore and interact with its contents. The combination of romantic imagery and practical elements creates a harmonious balance, making this spread both visually appealing and highly functional for personal reflection and memory keeping.

A Signature Feature: Removable Fabric Pocket

Nestled in the very heart of the first signature, you’ll discover a truly unique and handcrafted element. I took a lovely Victorian calling card image, sourced from the “Victorian Valentines” bundle, and carefully fussy cut it. This charming image was then securely adhered to a piece of very vintage fabric, which I transformed into a delicate yet sturdy pocket. To further enhance its antique allure, I hand-sewed an authentic mother-of-pearl button onto the pocket, adding a touch of timeless elegance. Complementing the button, some exquisite tatted lace was meticulously stitched, providing a beautiful textural contrast.

What makes this pocket particularly versatile is its design: it is fully removable. Should the owner wish to reconfigure their journal or use the pocket in a different creative project, they can simply snip the threads. Alternatively, it can remain a cherished, permanent fixture within the journal, serving as a beautiful repository for small treasures and notes. This thoughtful detail embodies the spirit of customizable crafting, allowing the journal to evolve with its owner’s desires.

Textural Layers and Vintage Ephemera

Adding another layer of texture and visual interest, I carefully clipped in a glassine bag, enhanced with stapled lace. This subtle addition creates a delightful tactile experience and a semi-transparent layer that hints at what lies beneath. Throughout the journal, I’ve incorporated a variety of beautiful floral images, particularly for my tags, as showcased here. To ensure these vibrant botanicals captured attention, I resized them in an editing program, making them larger and more impactful on each tag, allowing their intricate details to shine.

For the right side of this spread, I found one of my absolute favorite French ledger pages—the striking blue one—by searching “French ephemera” on The Graphics Fairy’s free site. Its historical script and beautiful color perfectly complement the journal’s aesthetic. A charming whale tab, punched from a page within “The British Flower Guide” bundle, adds a whimsical and unexpected touch, serving as both a decorative accent and a functional page marker. This combination of curated images and textures creates a rich, engaging spread that is both beautiful and functional for journaling.

Interactive Side Pockets and Belly Bands

On the right side of this delightful spread, I utilized another captivating page from “The British Flower Guide” bundle. This image was enlarged and cleverly transformed into a functional side pocket, adding a dynamic and interactive element to the page. I’m particularly fond of this technique, as it allows for a subtle expansion of storage space without disrupting the visual flow of the journal. To further enhance its charm, I glued an authentic antique French laundry label across the pocket. This label serves not only as a decorative accent but also ingeniously functions as a belly band.

Beneath this belly band, I’ve tucked a collection of authentic tea cards and a beautiful Victorian fan image, sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s free site. These elements add layers of historical detail and visual intrigue, inviting the owner to explore and uncover hidden treasures. The interplay between the natural imagery of the flower guide, the utilitarian charm of the laundry label, and the delicate beauty of the ephemera creates a cohesive and engaging composition that is both aesthetically pleasing and rich in potential for personal storytelling.

Layered Tags and Authentic Papers

For the left side of this spread, I delicately tipped in a piece of authentic French manuscript paper, using a strip of antique lace as the hinge. This not only adds a beautiful vintage touch but also ensures the page has a soft, flowing movement. Near the bottom, a charming Victorian scrap image, found within the “Victorian Valentines” collection, provides a sweet focal point, anchoring the page with its nostalgic appeal. I then crafted a unique pocket using some exquisite old rose crochet lace, perfect for housing a collaged tag.

My approach to creating tags involves a thoughtful layering process. Each tag typically features a label image (easily found by searching “labels” on The Graphics Fairy), a beautiful floral image, and often a genuine postage stamp, adding authenticity and historical depth. The base of these tags is just as important, for which I use either authentic antique cotton rag paper book pages or genuine antique French manuscript. This commitment to using historically rich materials ensures that every tag is not just an embellishment, but a mini piece of art in itself, contributing to the overall narrative of the journal.

Angel Scraps and Journaling Supplies

Continuing the theme of interactive elements, I created another delightful pocket using a French blue receipt. This receipt, with its charming script and subtle coloring, provides a lovely backdrop for a collaged angel Victorian scrap image. The angelic figure, a common motif in Victorian ephemera, adds a touch of ethereal beauty and timeless innocence to the page, making it a truly captivating focal point.

Within this thoughtfully designed pocket, I’ve tucked several blank tag bases, all crafted from authentic antique French manuscript paper. These provide a wonderful opportunity for the journal’s owner to personalize and decorate them according to their own creative vision. Alongside these, I’ve included various antique book pages and additional pieces of ephemera, offering a treasure trove of supplies to be used throughout the journal. This combination of pre-embellished elements and blank canvases ensures that the journal is both a finished piece of art and a customizable creative space, ready to be filled with new stories and memories.

Vibrant Victorian Lithography and Stamp Accents

This spread celebrates the vibrant artistry of Victorian trade cards, specifically utilizing images from the “Cherry Blossom Lane” ephemera bundle. On the left, one such trade card depicting a charming young girl has been enlarged to fill an entire page. My decision to magnify these images stems from their undeniable beauty, crisp clarity, and vivid coloration. Victorian lithography, with its rich and diverse palette, has always fascinated me, and these trade cards are perfect examples of that colorful artistry. By showcasing them on a larger scale, their intricate details and historical charm truly come to life.

To further enhance the visual journey and add another layer of authenticity, I’ve strategically placed genuine postage stamps throughout the journal, here and there. These small, unexpected accents encourage the eye to travel across both pages, creating a delightful flow and guiding the viewer through the journal’s narrative. This subtle but effective technique adds an extra dimension of vintage charm, making each glance an opportunity for discovery.

Strengthening Pages with Fashion and Toile Imagery

On the left side of this final featured spread, I employed a practical yet beautiful technique by fussy cutting a Victorian fashion image, sourced from “The Milliner” bundle. This was not merely for aesthetics; it served a crucial functional purpose of strengthening the page, which is an extremely old cotton rag paper book page dating back to the late 1700s. The delicate nature of such antique paper benefits immensely from this reinforcement, ensuring its longevity while adding a captivating visual element.

For the right side, I selected a stunning toile-like image, discovered within the “Provence” bundle. Originally presented in a brighter purple, I carefully edited its color and hue to achieve a much softer, more muted tone. This transformation perfectly aligns with the journal’s overarching delicate aesthetic, creating a serene and elegant backdrop that complements the other vintage elements. I am absolutely delighted with how beautifully this page turned out, showcasing the power of thoughtful image manipulation to create a cohesive and harmonious visual experience.
