Welcoming Regan Emma Laine Shaver: A Birth Story of Love, Legacy, and Unyielding Strength
Our hearts are overflowing with joy as we announce the arrival of our beautiful daughter, Regan Emma Laine Shaver! She graced us with her presence on October 4th at precisely 11:53 a.m., weighing 7 pounds, 5 ounces, and measuring 18 1/4 inches long. Her birth has filled our home with an unimaginable light, and we are utterly smitten with every tiny detail of our newest family member.
These precious first moments, beautifully captured by the talented Alisha Rudd Photography, freeze time and allow us to relive the sheer magic of her arrival. Each photograph tells a part of our incredible journey into becoming a family of four.

From the very first glimpse, it was absolute, unconditional love at first sight. Gazing at her sweet face for the first time was an instant echo of six years prior, when we first held her older sister, Olivia. There’s an undeniable resemblance, a delightful mirroring that makes us smile. They are, without a doubt, twinning in the most adorable way possible, creating an instant bond that only sisters can share.

The Art of Naming: Our Unique Shakespearean Tradition
Choosing a name for our newest addition was a process steeped in both personal sentiment and a touch of literary magic. Robert and I have, quite unexpectedly, developed a profound appreciation for William Shakespeare over the years. This shared passion blossomed from my background as a former English teacher, where I always held a special reverence for Shakespearean plays. It’s truly remarkable to consider that he was one of the first writers in history to consistently portray female characters as heroes in literature, challenging societal norms of his time.
Our connection to the Bard runs deeper than just admiration. We were married on April 23rd, which fittingly marks Shakespeare’s own birthday. Our eldest daughter, Olivia, also carries a name invented by Shakespeare, famously appearing in one of my all-time favorite plays, Twelfth Night. So, when we began the delightful task of brainstorming names for our second precious babe, we naturally gravitated towards a list of female Shakespearean characters. Among the many beautiful options, the name Regan, from the powerful tragedy King Lear, resonated with us most deeply. It felt strong, elegant, and perfectly suited for our little girl, carrying a rich historical and literary weight.
Her middle names, Emma and Laine, weave together important threads of our family history. Emma honors my beloved great-grandmother, a woman whose spirit and strength have always inspired me. Laine is a cherished link between generations, as it’s a variation of my own middle name, Elaine, and also my mother’s. This beautiful combination ensures that Regan’s name is not only unique and literary but also a tribute to the incredible women who have shaped our family. And in a charming twist of fate, her initials, RELS, serendipitously match Robert’s, adding another layer of special connection to her identity.

A Journey of Strength: Regan’s Arrival Story
The experience of bringing Regan into the world was nothing short of astonishing, particularly when compared to my first labor with Olivia. This time, my body had a completely different plan in store. It was early Wednesday morning, just past midnight, when I suddenly woke up feeling a gush. My initial thought, accompanied by a chuckle, was that I’d perhaps had an embarrassing “wet-the-bed” moment during pregnancy! In reality, my water had broken, completely out of the blue. There had been absolutely no signs of labor leading up to that moment, no subtle hints or increasing discomfort.
My labor with Olivia had been a stark contrast. It was a marathon, lasting 16 grueling hours at home, characterized by the most intense back labor contractions, very little cervical progression, and not even a hint of my water breaking naturally. This time, however, was a completely different narrative, unfolding with an unexpected speed and intensity.

The Unfolding of Labor: From Laughter to Intensity
Once I confirmed that my little “accident” was, in fact, the start of labor, I called my midwife. Robert and I practically danced our way to the hospital, filled with a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation, arriving and being admitted around 5:30 a.m. In those early hours, I felt barely the slightest twinge of a contraction; I was still laughing and making jokes, blissfully unaware of the rapid transformation that was about to unfold.
However, the moment we settled into my hospital room, the labor intensified dramatically. They started me on Pitocin, and the carefree smile quickly vanished from my face. I distinctly remember confessing to my nurse what a “total wimp” I considered myself to be when it came to pain. I made it clear that I would be ready for an epidural as soon as the discomfort became truly challenging. Little did I know, my body had other plans, and I was about to embark on an experience that would redefine my understanding of pain tolerance and inner strength.

After just an hour of incredibly fast progress, I was indeed begging for the epidural. The contractions were coming hard and fast, and the pain had quickly escalated beyond anything I had anticipated. Unfortunately, the anesthesiologist was significantly backed up, unable to reach my room as quickly as I desperately needed. In a span of just three hours, I progressed from 2 cm to a staggering 9 1/2 cm, enduring each intense contraction without any pain medication. I remember vividly praying during every single wave of pain, desperately asking God for strength to get through it – and perhaps, in a moment of raw, primal honesty, even humorously cursing Eve a little bit for making this whole birthing thing such an intense experience for all of us women!
I genuinely don’t know how I would have navigated those excruciating hours without Robert and my mom by my side. Their unwavering presence, constant encouragement, and calm reassurance were my anchors in the storm of contractions. Their voices, their touch, and their belief in my ability to persevere were the most powerful forms of pain relief I could have asked for in those moments.

Discovering Unseen Strength: The Final Push
Finally, just 20 minutes before it was time to push, the anesthesiologist arrived to administer the epidural. However, in another unexpected turn, it only worked on one side of my body. The relief was partial, and I still felt *everything* on my right side. For a moment, a wave of despair washed over me. But then, a profound shift occurred. I realized there was no going back, no way out of this incredible journey. This was my reality, and I had to accept it and find the strength within me to see it through. It was at this precise moment that an incredible adrenaline rush surged through my veins.
I have never, in my entire life, felt so utterly determined, so powerfully empowered, so unequivocally strong. It was as if every fiber of my being converged into a singular, resolute force. And in a remarkable span of just five pushes, our beautiful, healthy baby girl, Regan, was born. The instant she was placed on my chest, all the intense pain, the struggle, the exhaustion, completely vanished. It was replaced by an overwhelming sense of love, relief, and pure, unadulterated joy. The world outside that moment ceased to exist.

The bustling hospital room, filled with nurses and doctors, became an indistinct blur around me. All that mattered, more than anything else in the world, was this warm, squishy, incredibly vocal ball of a baby lying on my chest. Her cries, initially “screaming to high heaven,” were the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. In that moment, her strong, healthy voice was the greatest symphony in the whole wide world, a testament to her vibrant life.
Reflecting on those intense hours, I realize that amidst the immense pain, there were moments I wanted to be angry, to scream out loud (and yes, I might have let out a few towards the very end!). But once it was all over, a profound sense of pride settled within me. I discovered a reservoir of strength I never knew I possessed. It was a challenge unlike any I had ever faced, and enduring it taught me a valuable lesson about my own resilience and power.

Life’s Profound Lessons Through Motherhood
This experience truly taught me more about life itself. It served as a powerful reminder that we will all inevitably face trials and tribulations. There will be moments that scare us to our core, pushing us to our absolute limits. But what this journey reinforced is that when these challenges are overcome, we emerge stronger, more capable, and incredibly proud, knowing that we faced adversity head-on and conquered it. Childbirth, in its rawest form, is a testament to the incredible resilience of the human spirit.
Already, this precious little girl has imparted so much wisdom upon me. I eagerly anticipate all the other great things, the eye-opening life lessons, and the boundless love that God has planned for us as we embark on this incredible adventure of being her parents. Each day is a new discovery, a new opportunity to learn and grow alongside her.
From Two to Four: Embracing Sibling Love
One of the most heartwarming moments was when Olivia came to the hospital to meet her baby sister for the first time. It took a little while for the reality of having a new baby sister to fully sink in for her. Initially, there was a mix of curiosity and perhaps a touch of bewilderment. However, with gentle encouragement and ample time for her to process this big change, Olivia slowly but surely started to embrace her new role as a big sister. Her initial cautiousness soon transformed into an undeniable affection, a protective tenderness that melted our hearts.

Now that we are all home, settled into our new rhythm as a family of four, Olivia has truly blossomed into the best big sister imaginable. She’s our invaluable little helper, eagerly grabbing blankets, fetching burp cloths, and even assisting us during bath time. Her favorite new role, however, seems to be singing sweet lullabies to Regan, her voice filled with a pure, innocent love. Witnessing the two of them together, seeing their bond grow stronger with each passing day, fills my heart with an overwhelming warmth. Every single day, I fall deeper in love with our beautiful, expanded family.
We are immensely thankful for this incredible blessing and feel profoundly grateful for the newest light in our lives. As the scripture reminds us, “Every good and perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17).
