Our Stunning Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Transformation

Transforming Our Builder-Grade Kitchen into a Modern Farmhouse Dream on a Budget

After two and a half years of dedicated effort, countless hours of painting, numerous buckets of concrete, and a significant amount of sweat equity, the much-anticipated kitchen reveal day is finally here! This transformation has been a labor of love, turning a dark, uninspiring space into a bright, functional, and stylish modern farmhouse kitchen, all achieved through 100% doable DIY projects. The excitement is palpable – I’m practically doing cartwheels and dancing with joy, even if you can’t see it!

For those who need a reminder of where we started, let’s take a quick trip back to December 2013, the day we moved into our new home. Here’s what our kitchen looked like then, complete with my wonderful mother-in-law, Barb, in the picture.

Our kitchen's original dark and uninspiring builder-grade look upon moving in. A dated stainless steel sink and dark wood cabinets dominated the space.

While some might look at our “before” and think it wasn’t so bad, we were eager to infuse our personal style into the space. Robert and I felt incredibly fortunate to have built a new house, which meant our primary focus was on personalizing its standard builder-grade features rather than tackling a full-scale, costly renovation of an old, outdated kitchen that many homeowners face. This distinction significantly eased the process and allowed us to concentrate on strategic, budget-friendly updates.

Our initial phase of personalization began swiftly after moving in. Within the first few months, we tackled some immediate changes: painting the walls to a more neutral and inviting shade, updating the basic builder-grade lighting fixtures, and adding a fun chalkboard wall for family interaction. However, after these initial cosmetic improvements, our kitchen makeover journey came to a temporary halt. We knew the more significant changes would require substantial planning and budgeting.

We were perfectly content with postponing the major renovation for a couple of years. This waiting period was crucial, allowing us to save up and meticulously plan how we wanted the kitchen to look and function without compromising on our vision. It gave us ample time to refine our design ideas, explore various DIY options, and truly envision the modern farmhouse aesthetic we were aiming for. The initial plans and mood board served as our guiding star throughout this entire process, ensuring every decision aligned with our desired outcome.

And now, after all that anticipation and hard work, here it is – our dream kitchen, fully realized and absolutely transformed!

Embracing Brightness: The Power of White Painted Cabinets

One of the most impactful decisions in our kitchen makeover was painting the cabinets white. Given that our kitchen lacks any windows, the previous dark wood cabinets made the space feel incredibly enclosed and cave-like. The reddish undertones of the old wood also clashed noticeably with the rest of our home’s decor, creating a disjointed aesthetic. Opting for a crisp white, specifically Benjamin Moore Simply White, was an absolute game-changer. It instantly brightened the entire room, making it feel more open, airy, and infinitely more inviting. The transformation from dark and dreary to light and luminous was nothing short of miraculous.

Some might hesitate to paint kitchen cabinets white due to concerns about cleanliness, but I actually appreciate it. I find it beneficial to quickly spot any smudges or cooking grease, indicating what needs a swift wipe-down. This way, I can maintain a consistently clean kitchen with minimal effort. Surprisingly, since we painted them a month ago, the white cabinets have remained remarkably clean, even with our family’s fondness for frying bacon! The key, as detailed in our guide on how to paint kitchen cabinets like a pro, lies in proper preparation and using high-quality paint for durability.

Upgrading the Heart of the Kitchen: Sink and Faucet Transformation

Prior to the makeover, our stainless steel sink was a constant struggle to keep clean, always showing water spots and smudges. Furthermore, the squat, builder-grade faucet made washing larger pots and pans an unnecessarily cumbersome chore, leading to frequent frustration. It was clear that this functional centerpiece of our kitchen desperately needed an upgrade to match our evolving aesthetic and improve daily usability.

The original stainless steel sink and short faucet, highlighting the cleaning challenges and impracticality for washing large items.

Initially, I had envisioned a standard white drop-in sink for ease of installation. However, after receiving incredible encouragement from our community, I gained the courage needed to tackle a more ambitious project: installing a huge farmhouse sink. This involved the nerve-wracking but ultimately rewarding task of cutting into our existing countertop and cabinet – a truly scary step, but we did it! We found a fantastic, generously sized farmhouse sink at IKEA for only slightly more than a basic drop-in option, making it an excellent value. Robert and his dad earned major praise for their skillful execution of this complex installation.

The new, deep farmhouse sink paired with a taller, more functional faucet has revolutionized our dishwashing experience. What once felt like a major chore is now considerably less daunting. While I wouldn’t go so far as to say I “enjoy” washing dishes, the improved ergonomics and the sheer capacity of the sink make the task much more manageable and efficient. It’s a small victory that makes a big difference in daily kitchen life, seamlessly blending style with practicality.

From Beige to Beautiful: DIY Countertops and Backsplash

Our original kitchen featured standard builder-grade beige Formica countertops and a matching beige tiled backsplash. While functional, they lacked any character or appeal, failing to inspire or complement the emerging style of our home. These elements were purely utilitarian, and I was never truly in love with their bland appearance, which further emphasized the need for a comprehensive aesthetic overhaul.

The uninspired beige Formica countertops and tiled backsplash from the original kitchen, awaiting a dramatic DIY transformation.

The transformation of our countertops was a significant DIY undertaking, involving wrestling with several layers of concrete to achieve our desired look. This “feather finish” technique resulted in beautiful, durable, and uniquely textured surfaces that exude a modern industrial-farmhouse vibe, all at a fraction of the cost of traditional stone. For the backsplash, we opted for whitewashed faux brick paneling installed directly over our existing tiles. This ingenious solution provided the rustic charm of exposed brick without the mess or expense of real masonry. I am absolutely thrilled with how both projects turned out, dramatically elevating the kitchen’s aesthetic and contributing immensely to the modern farmhouse feel.

Appliance Updates and Smart Budget Choices

To further enhance the cohesive modern farmhouse aesthetic, we eventually swapped out our old black gas range for a sleek stainless steel model. This upgrade was made possible by a fortunate find during a 30% off appliance sale at Lowe’s, demonstrating how strategic shopping can lead to significant savings on big-ticket items. The stainless steel range not only looks more contemporary and integrated within the new design but also provides updated functionality, making cooking a more enjoyable experience. It’s these thoughtful, budget-conscious decisions that allowed us to achieve a high-end look without the high-end price tag.

While our budget didn’t extend to replacing the vinyl flooring at this stage, we’re completely at peace with it for now. Renovation is often a marathon, not a sprint, and sometimes it’s about prioritizing and finding clever interim solutions. A beautiful striped jute rug, which I scored for an amazing 40% off, made a significant difference in visually elevating the floor and tying the room together. It adds texture, warmth, and a touch of farmhouse charm, proving that sometimes, a well-placed accent piece can temporarily solve a bigger design challenge without breaking the bank. This pragmatic approach allowed us to allocate funds to other, more pressing transformations, knowing the flooring can be addressed in the future.

A Space Transformed: Enjoying the New Kitchen

It’s almost embarrassing to admit, but I often find myself simply walking into the kitchen and staring at it, completely captivated by the transformation. The difference truly is like night and day. I simply couldn’t endure the oppressive darkness of the old kitchen any longer. Painting those cabinets white stands out as the single biggest and most impactful change, fundamentally altering the entire feel and atmosphere of the space. It brought light, life, and an undeniable sense of joy.

Now, baking parties with our daughter, Olivia, are infinitely more enjoyable in this vibrant new space. Even if, for this particular instance, I admit I took a shortcut and bought the cake from the grocery store – the joy of creating memories in a beautiful environment is what truly matters. The kitchen has become a focal point for family activities, fostering a warmer and more engaging atmosphere for everyone.

Olivia absolutely loves climbing onto one of the new barstools to eat her lunch every day. As a parent, I particularly appreciate the smart design choice of installing Stikwood reclaimed wood on the front of our bar. This durable and stylish addition protects the surface from those energetic, swinging little feet, eliminating worries about scuffs and marks and making cleanup a breeze. It’s another example of how our DIY efforts combined practicality with aesthetic appeal, creating a truly family-friendly space.

DIY Charm and Thoughtful Details

Just last week, on a spontaneous whim, I rummaged through our scrap wood pile and crafted the “Farmers Market” sign using only paint I already had on hand. It’s truly the best “free” decor ever! I absolutely adore how it turned out and how perfectly it fills that somewhat awkward space above the cabinets, adding a touch of rustic charm and a personalized element to the kitchen. This simple, no-cost project exemplifies our commitment to budget-friendly DIY and resourceful decorating.

While not strictly part of the kitchen’s functional makeover, our DIY wood beam doorway, which connects our living room and kitchen, makes a significant visual impact within this space. Its rustic appeal beautifully complements the modern farmhouse aesthetic, creating a seamless flow between the two areas. This architectural detail adds character and warmth, enhancing the overall cohesive design of our open-concept living space, making it feel more integrated and intentional.

The wood beam also ties in perfectly with our framed chalkboard, which we crafted using more reclaimed wood salvaged from our scrap pile. We were incredibly fortunate that Robert’s parents cleaned out their barn and generously provided us with a treasure trove of beautiful reclaimed wood pieces. We’re beyond excited about the possibility of building some unique furniture with these materials in the near future. The framed chalkboard serves as both a decorative and practical element, embodying the resourceful spirit of our farmhouse design.

For some of the smaller decorative elements, I was incredibly lucky to discover some fantastic thrifted pieces that perfectly align with our modern farmhouse aesthetic. One such gem is this vintage food scale, which, remarkably, is still fully functional! It started as a beaten-up stainless steel item, but with a bit of creativity, I gave it a charming faux rusted vintage look, transforming it into a unique focal point. I love to display fresh vegetables from my parents’ garden or our own backyard garden box in the bowl on the scale, adding a touch of rustic charm until they’re ready to be cooked.

With summer being a big entertaining season for us, I’ve recently developed a habit of tiptoeing out to our backyard to snip fresh mint leaves for homemade mojitos. The inviting spot beside our fridge has become the ideal location for setting up our drink station, making entertaining both easy and stylish. This practical corner not only serves a functional purpose but also adds to the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere of our new kitchen.

Our framed chalkboard continues to be an indispensable tool for household organization. I maintain the habit of planning our weekly meals on it, ensuring we stay on track with healthy eating and grocery shopping. There’s also a convenient little space at the bottom where I can jot down items I need to pick up at the store, or, perhaps more frequently, where Olivia can unleash her creativity with drawings while I’m preparing dinner. It’s a dynamic, functional piece that truly integrates into our family’s daily rhythm.

A couple of years ago, we ingeniously repurposed these wall planters to serve as storage baskets for our fruits and vegetables. Their rustic aesthetic and practical functionality quickly won me over, so I decided to keep them in place during the makeover. They continue to be a charming and efficient way to keep produce organized and accessible, blending seamlessly with our farmhouse style and demonstrating that clever storage solutions can be both beautiful and budget-friendly.

Additionally, this handy little tiered tray proves incredibly useful for organizing dish sponges, soaps, and other essentials right next to the sink. It keeps everything tidy and within easy reach, contributing to a clutter-free and efficient workspace. These small, thoughtful details collectively enhance both the functionality and visual appeal of our renovated kitchen, making everyday tasks smoother and the overall environment more pleasant.

Looking Ahead: Almost Done with the Whole House!

And that pretty much wraps up our kitchen journey! It’s truly hard to believe that we now only have two rooms left to tackle before our entire house is completely finished. The playroom and laundry room are the final two spots on my to-do list, perhaps with a couple of closets sprinkled in for good measure. You can explore the rest of our room reveals here to see all the transformations we’ve completed so far. This milestone feels incredible, a testament to what can be achieved with a vision and a lot of DIY dedication.

TOTAL: $2,567.10

I was absolutely astonished when I calculated the final cost of this entire makeover. This kitchen renovation, without a doubt, turned out to be the most expensive room we’ve ever tackled. However, when you consider the sheer scope of what we achieved – a brand-new stainless steel stove, a massive farmhouse sink and faucet, custom DIY concrete countertops, a charming faux brick backsplash, freshly painted cabinets, stylish barstools, updated lighting, and a host of small decor items – the total feels incredibly justified. Our kitchen is also a generous 20′ x 12′, so its considerable size played a significant role in the overall expenditure. Despite the cost, the value added and the joy it brings far outweigh the investment.

In a humorous turn, I think we probably spent nearly as much money eating out during the three-month period when this room was periodically out of commission for cooking! Such is the reality of living through a major kitchen renovation. But every penny and every takeout meal was worth it for the stunning result.
