One Room Challenge Week 6 Our Eclectic Farmhouse Playroom Is Here

Eclectic Farmhouse Playroom Makeover: A Budget-Friendly Transformation for Family Fun

Every parent dreams of a magical space where children can explore, create, and play freely, a place that nurtures imagination while keeping clutter at bay. Yet, the reality often looks a little different – a sea of toys, mismatched furniture, and an overall sense of overwhelm. For years, our playroom felt like a constant battleground against chaos, a room that served its purpose but lacked true charm and functionality. It was time for a change, a complete overhaul to create a modern eclectic farmhouse playroom that would be both beautiful for adults and wonderfully engaging for our four-year-old, Olivia.

Admittedly, there are days I envy Olivia’s carefree existence. The freedom to wear a tiara in public, indulge in spontaneous naps, and face the toughest decision of choosing between a cookie or a brownie for dessert – oh, the simple joys! But then I remember the grown-up perks: a relaxing glass of wine, delicious sushi, and exhilarating roller coaster rides. And suddenly, being an adult feels pretty fantastic. What truly makes life awesome, though, is the joy of sharing a beautifully designed, functional space with your loved ones. And that’s exactly what we achieved with our newly finished playroom!

Not the chaotic space you just saw. No, not that playroom.

After Eclectic Farmhouse Playroom Makeover - A bright and organized modern eclectic farmhouse playroom.

After a thrilling and intense six-week journey as part of the One Room Challenge, it’s officially reveal day! It’s truly incredible how swiftly we managed to transform this space. To be fair, with ten other room makeovers under our belt, we’ve had quite a bit of practice perfecting our DIY skills and design vision. This challenge pushed our creativity and time management, resulting in a space that far exceeded our initial expectations.

For those interested in our creative process and the step-by-step transformation, you can revisit our entire ORC journey from the beginning through these weekly updates:

Week 1: Planning the Layout | Week 2: IKEA Built-Ins | Week 3: Repurposed Desks | Week 4: Wood Plank Wall | Week 5: Finishing Touches

We’ve also compiled a comprehensive source list, including paint colors, product links, and a detailed budget breakdown, which you’ll find at the conclusion of this post.

To truly appreciate the transformation, let’s take a moment to recall what this room looked like just a few weeks ago. Prepare for a stark contrast! (Affiliate links are provided below for your convenience. For more information on our disclosure policy, please see our full disclosure here.)

Playroom before makeover - A dark and disorganized space with toys scattered.

Womp womp indeed. A truly uninspiring “before.”

And now, behold the “after!”

Playroom after transformation - Bright and airy space with built-ins and organized toys.

It’s hard to believe we once navigated through such an expanse of toy clutter and a random, misplaced office chair. The previous setup was a testament to how quickly a dedicated play area can devolve into a disorganized mess without proper storage and a coherent design. It felt perpetually untidy, even after attempts at tidying, often leaving us feeling overwhelmed rather than relaxed.

This transformed space is now incredibly functional, serving as a hub for creativity, learning, and family bonding. The removal of the “junky mess” has not only visually decluttered the room but also cleared our minds. There’s a tangible sense of calm and happiness that permeates the air now, making us want to spend more time here, engaging in imaginative play and quality family moments.

Okay, one more before-and-after shot for good measure, and then I’ll dive into all the delightful details – I pinky promise!

Crafting a Vision: Modern Farmhouse Meets Eclectic Charm

From the moment we first moved into this house, I envisioned a playroom that was more than just a storage facility for toys. My dream was to install sleek, clean white built-in shelves, offering ample storage and a dedicated space for family relaxation and activities. However, my heart also yearned for the warmth and character of rustic farmhouse aesthetics. The challenge was to marry these two seemingly distinct styles – modern functionality with charming rustic touches – to create a truly unique and inviting space.

The “light bulb moment” for blending these styles came when I stumbled upon this inspiring wood wall idea from Shades of Blue Interiors. It perfectly encapsulated the rustic element I was searching for, providing a natural backdrop that would beautifully complement the crisp white built-ins. This accent wall became the anchor of our modern eclectic farmhouse design, grounding the room with authentic character.

While our initial idea of repurposing cheap fence wood for the accent wall proved impractical due to concerns about mold and dry rot, we found a fantastic alternative in tongue-and-groove rustic style boards from Lowe’s. Though a slight adjustment to our budget, the peace of mind knowing we had a durable and clean solution was absolutely worth it. The natural wood tones add immense warmth and texture, making the feature wall a true focal point.

Above the television, I hung a charming cut-out “adventure” sign. This simple yet impactful piece perfectly captures the spirit of a playroom – a place for exploration, imagination, and endless adventures. It adds a whimsical touch that ties into the overall playful atmosphere.

Smart Storage Solutions: Keeping Clutter at Bay with Style

Effective toy storage was paramount in this playroom makeover. To tackle the inevitable toy overflow while maintaining an appealing aesthetic, I sought out creative and budget-friendly solutions. I discovered these sturdy wooden crates on sale for less than $10 each. A quick spray of Rustoleum Winter Gray paint and stenciled numbers transformed them into stylish, organized toy bins. This DIY approach proved significantly cheaper and more personalized than many off-the-shelf storage options, allowing us to categorize and easily access Olivia’s favorite playthings.

Undoubtedly, the most substantial project in terms of cost and effort was the creation of these IKEA hack built-in shelves. However, their impact on the room’s functionality and aesthetic cannot be overstated – they were absolutely worth every penny and every hour of work. The lower half features cabinets, which have been a game-changer for hiding away toys and board games, keeping the room looking tidy while still allowing Olivia easy access to her treasures. The custom look achieved with these built-ins elevates the entire space, giving it a polished and intentional feel that defies its budget-friendly origins.

Decorating the open shelves was a joy, primarily using toys Olivia already owned. We organized building blocks and musical instruments in charming Hocking jars, which I found at Walmart. While I initially searched for large plastic or acrylic jars, these glass jars offered a more cohesive aesthetic. Robert and I simply assist Olivia when she wants to play with them, making it a small compromise for a stylish storage solution.

To personalize the space further, I crafted a few cork board picture frames. These provide an easy and ever-changing display for Olivia’s latest artwork from preschool, celebrating her creativity. Additionally, I scored a fantastic deal on a cute vintage cage fan from eBay for just $8, adding a touch of nostalgic charm and practical airflow to the room.

Dual Desks for Shared Creativity: A Place for Parent and Child

Dual wall-mounted desks in playroom - creative space for parent and child.

I recognized the potential of the half-wall in this room as an ideal spot for a pair of desks – one for Olivia and one for me. This arrangement allows me to blog or craft while she enjoys her coloring books or practices her reading and writing skills, fostering a shared space for productive creativity. It’s a wonderful way to connect and spend time together, each immersed in our own activities yet still in close proximity.

The ingenious solution for these desks came from an unexpected source: a square kitchen table I found on Craigslist. With a bit of DIY magic, we cut it in half and mounted each section directly onto the wall, creating two perfectly sized, wall-mounted desks. It was a truly transformative repurposing project! Now I find myself looking around for other pieces of furniture to cut in half, wondering what other fabulous transformations are possible.

Personal touches make a house a home, and our desks are no exception. A very sweet friend gifted me this “S” from an old Starbucks sign – a fantastic piece of salvaged decor! The rest of the desk accessories were curated from items I already had around the house, proving that you don’t always need new purchases to create a stylish and functional setup.

Whimsical Touches and Thoughtful Furnishings

On the window side of the room, I created these charming pom-pom curtains, inspired by Anthropologie and Pottery Barn designs but achieved as budget-friendly knock-offs using plain IKEA sheers. This DIY project added a playful and soft texture to the room without the hefty price tag of designer versions.

To complement the rustic-modern aesthetic, I hung the curtains on a galvanized pipe-looking curtain rod I discovered at Target. Its industrial edge provides a nice contrast to the softness of the curtains, enhancing the eclectic feel of the room.

Olivia’s existing play table also received a quick, refreshing makeover on this side of the room, integrating it seamlessly into the new design without requiring a brand new purchase. A fresh coat of paint and some TLC was all it took to make it feel brand new.

After much deliberation, Robert and I decided that the most practical and cost-effective solution for our old tan couch was to sell it and replace it with a white IKEA Ektorp sofa. We managed to sell the old couch for $200, which significantly offset the cost of the new one. This decision made perfect sense for a playroom: if the slipcover ever gets dirty, I can simply toss it in the wash with some bleach, and it will be fresh and clean again (fingers crossed!). It’s remarkable how much IKEA featured in this room, a testament to their versatile and affordable pieces!

Robert and I have often created engineer print signs with wood frames, but for this playroom, I opted for colored engineer prints. Using Picmonkey, I typed up meaningful wording to create these oversized storybook pages. The result is utterly adorable, adding a deeply personal and sentimental touch to the space. Every room we transform has a project that pulls at the heartstrings, and these storybook pages are certainly the most “sappy” and cherished elements of this playroom.

For an extra layer of whimsy, I hung this delightful felted pom-pom garland. It instantly made the room feel very Dr. Seuss-ish, adding a playful and colorful dimension that perfectly suits a child’s space.

When planning the room’s color scheme, I found all these vibrant sofa pillows on sale at Target, which ultimately inspired the entire palette. I intentionally chose blues and yellows to keep the room fun and lively without leaning too heavily into traditional “girly” pinks and purples. This creates a bright, inviting, and gender-neutral space that appeals to everyone.

After an extensive search for the perfect rug, this striped cotton rug fit beautifully into our design scheme. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, it is incredibly soft – so soft, in fact, that I’m ready to wrap myself in it like a blanket burrito! The rug has become a central gathering spot, where the three of us love to sprawl out for block-building competitions and lively board game nights, truly enhancing our family time together.

Finally, we replaced our plain builder-grade light fixture with this gorgeous mint-colored one from Hunter Fan. Doesn’t it just scream “playroom”? I adore how it blends a modern aesthetic with a charming vintage vibe, perfectly encapsulating the eclectic style we aimed for throughout the room. A well-chosen light fixture can truly transform a space, adding character and a finishing touch.

Budget Transparency: The Real Cost of a Dream Playroom

Now for the big, honest breakdown! We did encounter a couple of unexpected challenges with the wood plank wall material and the sofa slipcover plan early on. These “snafus” meant we ended up spending approximately $450 more than our initial budget. It’s a “gulp” moment, to be sure!

However, despite these adjustments, we remained committed to furnishing this room with as many budget-friendly DIY projects as possible and diligently shopping sales. Our goal was to create this dream playroom, complete with a rather extensive wish list, while keeping costs as contained as possible. Every choice, from the IKEA hacks to the Craigslist finds, was made with both design and finances in mind.

Gulp. Yes, that escalated a bit more than planned! However, considering the scope of the transformation and the sheer amount of new furniture and custom features, we feel it was an investment in a space that truly enhances our family’s daily life.

This playroom marks the completion of the last major room makeover in our entire house, excluding the laundry room and closets. Perhaps 2017 will truly be the year of massive organization for us!

Well, perhaps not if this little tornado has anything to say about it!

A Space That Connects: More Than Just a Playroom

It is absolutely astounding how profoundly completing this room has positively impacted our family. Before this makeover, our evenings often involved parking ourselves in front of the TV, indulging in Netflix for a couple of hours before bedtime. Now, thanks to our inviting new playroom, we consciously choose to spend our evenings completely unplugged. We gather here as a family, engaging in creative play, reading, and enjoying each other’s company in a space that truly brings us joy. This shift in our daily routine makes all the hard work, planning, and effort invested in this makeover unequivocally worth it.

I’m often asked to define the exact style of this room. Is it eclectic? Farmhouse? Modern? Perhaps a delightful blend where Joanna Gaines meets Emily Henderson? Whatever label you choose, all I know is that I “big puffy heart” love it! And ultimately, that’s what truly matters, isn’t it? The most important thing is to fill your home with elements that bring happiness to you and your loved ones. This newly transformed playroom has undeniably become our happiest and most functional space yet.
