Welcome back to Bless’er House, where every DIY project is a journey, and sometimes, the best endings are the ones we didn’t initially plan for. Consider this the ultimate alternate ending to our beloved DIY Faux Fireplace saga. Because, let’s be honest, those unexpected twists usually lead to the most satisfying outcomes, don’t they? Much like hoping for a different fate for Jon Snow on Game of Thrones, sometimes you just know there’s a better version waiting to be written.
In the spirit of continuous improvement and our ongoing “Can’t-Leave-Well-Enough-Alone Chronicles,” we found ourselves revisiting a central feature of our living room. Our faux fireplace, a project we poured our hearts into, was beautiful, but one persistent element kept nagging at our design sensibilities. The living room is often the heart of the home, a place for relaxation, entertainment, and gathering. It needs to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. For a long time, we grappled with a common dilemma many homeowners face when balancing modern technology with classic home decor.
Reclaiming the Mantel: Farewell to the Giant Black Box
For what felt like an eternity, our ginormous 60-inch television dominated the space above our fireplace mantel. While my husband, Robert, cherished the idea of a grand TV setup, I secretly harbored a deep disdain for the massive black rectangle that overshadowed the entire room’s decor. It wasn’t just an aesthetic clash; it was a literal pain in the neck. Hours of looking upwards during a Netflixathon often left us with crick in our necks, diminishing the enjoyment of our favorite shows. The constant visual weight of the television above what should have been a cozy, inviting focal point felt out of sync with the warmth we aimed to create in our home. It was a compromise that, over time, became increasingly difficult to live with.

Then, one evening, amidst the cozy glow of our screens, Robert had a stroke of genius: why not move the TV to our stairway wall? This suggestion was a revelation! Suddenly, the aesthetic compromise melted away, and the ergonomic strain vanished. The stairway wall offered a perfect alternative location, allowing us to watch our shows comfortably without straining our necks. This seemingly simple decision had profound implications for our living room design. With the giant black box relocated, our beautiful faux fireplace was finally free to become the true centerpiece it was meant to be. This also meant we could bid a final farewell to the log end door we had painstakingly crafted to conceal all the unsightly cords feeding down to the outlet behind the fireplace. Freedom! The space was ours to reimagine, unencumbered by wires or a dominating screen, making way for new possibilities and a cleaner, more harmonious design.
A Family Affair: Prepping for the Firebox Transformation
Embarking on this new phase of our faux fireplace journey was a task that required extra hands, even if those hands were considerably smaller than what one might typically expect from a professional handyman. Our little helper, ever enthusiastic, donned her official work uniform – a vibrant Princess Anna costume, no less – ready to assist in the transformation. Involving Olivia in our DIY projects is always a joy; it teaches her about teamwork, the satisfaction of creating something with your own hands, and the occasional need for a little extra muscle (or, in this case, moral support!). Her infectious energy lightened the mood and made what could have been a chore into a memorable family activity. It’s moments like these that truly make a house a home, filled with laughter and shared accomplishments.

With our tiny assistant on duty, the first order of business was to carefully remove the existing firebox door. This step was crucial, as it would expose the interior of our faux fireplace, allowing us to build a more realistic and visually appealing firebox. Once the door was off, we were back to a familiar, albeit empty, setup. This blank slate was exciting, full of potential for what was to come. Next, Robert and Olivia tackled the TV mount itself. Watching them gingerly detach the heavy bracket from the wall definitely gave me a mini heart attack – safety first, always! But with careful coordination, the mount was successfully removed, leaving behind a clean, uninterrupted space above the mantel. This was the moment we had been waiting for, a true liberation of our mantelpiece from its former utilitarian purpose.

For those who might be just joining our DIY journey or considering building their own faux fireplace from scratch, you can find a comprehensive list of supplies and detailed instructions for the initial construction in this previous post. It covers everything you need to know to create the fundamental structure of your fireplace, setting the stage for the kind of customization and aesthetic enhancements we’re exploring today.
Crafting the Perfect Firebox: Supplies and Steps
To achieve the realistic look of a true firebox, careful selection of materials and precise execution are key. The goal was to create an interior that mimicked the rugged texture of brick while remaining easy to install and budget-friendly. Here’s what we gathered for this phase of the project, focusing on both functionality and visual impact:
Essential Supplies for Your Firebox Renovation:
- 1 panel of brick hardboard: This material is a fantastic alternative to real brick, offering a lightweight, cost-effective, and easy-to-cut solution that still delivers an authentic textured appearance. It’s perfect for achieving that rustic, industrial, or traditional fireplace aesthetic without the mess and heavy lifting of masonry.
- Circular saw: A reliable circular saw, like the one we own, is indispensable for making straight, precise cuts through the hardboard. Accuracy here ensures a snug fit and a professional finish.
- Jigsaw: For intricate cuts, especially around outlets or any curved edges you might encounter, a jigsaw is your best friend. Its maneuverability allows for detailed work that a circular saw simply can’t handle.
- Tape measure: Precision is paramount in DIY, and a good tape measure ensures all your cuts and placements are exact, preventing costly mistakes and wasted materials.
- 1.5″ finishing nails: These slender nails are ideal for securing the hardboard panels without leaving large, noticeable holes, contributing to a cleaner, more finished look.
- Hammer or pneumatic nail gun: While a hammer will get the job done, a pneumatic nail gun speeds up the process significantly and provides consistent, strong fastening, reducing fatigue on larger projects.
- Latex caulk (and caulk tool if you need extra help): Caulk is essential for sealing seams and filling small gaps, creating a seamless transition between panels and giving your firebox a polished, professional appearance. A caulk tool can make the process smoother, especially for those of us who tend to be a bit messy!
- Paint brush: A high-quality paintbrush, such as the one I consistently use, ensures smooth, even application of paint, crucial for achieving a flawless finish in your firebox.
- Flat black paint: We opted for flat black paint, specifically some leftover chalkboard paint. The matte finish is perfect for mimicking the interior of a traditional fireplace, absorbing light rather than reflecting it, and effectively camouflaging any imperfections or visible outlets.
Step-by-Step Firebox Installation:
The transformation began by laying a sturdy foundation. We first securely nailed down a couple of 2×4 pieces at the very bottom of our firebox opening. This crucial step was taken to ensure the base was completely level and stable. A stable base is incredibly important, as the brick paneling would eventually support decorative elements like heavy logs and a fireplace grate. Without a level foundation, the entire structure could appear crooked or unstable, detracting from the realism we were aiming for.
Next, we meticulously measured the exact width and depth required for our first piece of brick paneling. This piece would form the bottom of the firebox, so precision was key for a snug fit. Once measured, we carefully cut the paneling using our circular saw, ensuring clean, straight lines. We then anchored it firmly into place with finishing nails, making sure it was flush and secure against the newly installed 2×4 base. This created a solid and visually authentic floor for our faux firebox, immediately enhancing its realism.

With the bottom piece in place, we moved on to the sides. We again measured and cut the brick paneling with utmost care to fit the vertical dimensions of the firebox. These side pieces are vital for framing the opening and creating the enclosed feel of a real fireplace. Once cut, we secured them firmly with more finishing nails, ensuring they were plumb and created seamless corners with the bottom panel. A well-constructed frame is not only aesthetically pleasing but also provides the necessary support for the subsequent finishing touches.

A unique challenge presented itself with two existing outlets inside the firebox. While not immediately necessary, we wanted to retain access to them for any potential future needs – perhaps for an internal lighting feature or an electric candle display. To accommodate these, we meticulously marked the positions of the outlets on the brick paneling. Using our jigsaw, we carefully cut out precise openings for each outlet. This step required a steady hand to ensure clean edges that would blend seamlessly once finished. After the cuts were made, we nailed the paneling into place and then applied latex caulk to all the seams and around the outlet cutouts. Caulking is a small step that makes a huge difference, sealing gaps and creating a smooth, unified surface that significantly enhances the realism and professional finish of the firebox interior.

The final touch for the interior was painting. We applied two generous coats of flat black paint, which, as expected, worked wonders. The matte finish of the paint, especially the chalkboard paint we had on hand, is brilliant for creating depth and the illusion of a soot-stained, authentic firebox. What’s more, the flat black finish remarkably made the outlets practically disappear. We considered using black outlet covers, but they often have a slight sheen that would make them more noticeable. By painting the existing covers with the same matte black, they completely blended into the background, maintaining the uninterrupted, realistic look we desired. This subtle detail ensures that the focus remains entirely on the decorative elements within the firebox, rather than distracting electrical components.

Elevating the Aesthetics: Decorating Your Refreshed Firebox
With the structural work complete and the paint dried, it was time for the fun part: styling the firebox. Sometimes, the universe aligns perfectly, and that’s exactly what happened when I stumbled upon a fantastic fireplace grate at a local thrift store. It was a steal at just a few bucks, and the timing couldn’t have been more impeccable. Bringing it home, I was thrilled to discover it was the absolute perfect fit for our newly finished firebox opening. The vintage charm of the grate instantly added character and authenticity to the space, making it look even more like a functional, traditional fireplace.
To complete the look, I filled the grate with a collection of beautiful birch logs. These aren’t for burning, of course, but serve purely decorative purposes. The natural texture and light color of the birch bark provide a lovely contrast against the matte black interior of the firebox, adding an organic touch and visual warmth. Other options could include decorative candles, fairy lights nestled among the logs for a gentle glow, or even seasonally themed decor. The beauty of a faux firebox is the freedom to style it without worrying about heat or ashes, allowing for endless creative possibilities.

It’s important to reiterate that this firebox is purely for decorative purposes; we won’t be lighting any actual fires in it. And honestly, living in Charlotte, where we barely get an inch of snow all winter, a working fireplace isn’t a practical necessity for warmth. This faux setup perfectly satisfies our desire for the aesthetic charm of a fireplace without the maintenance, cost, or safety concerns of a real one. I seriously debated investing in an electrical fireplace insert, envisioning a flickering glow for ambiance. However, for the size we needed, a quality insert would have easily cost close to $500. Comparing that to the mere $35 we spent on creating this incredibly convincing firebox, the choice was clear. We are absolutely thrilled with this budget-friendly, visually stunning alternative, proving that you don’t need to break the bank to achieve a high-end look.
A New Canvas: Mantel Styling and Future Inspirations
Now, with the giant television finally off the mantel, I am absolutely brimming with excitement over the vast amount of decorating space I’ve gained! It’s truly a blank canvas, inviting endless creative possibilities for seasonal displays, cherished keepsakes, and beautiful decor arrangements. The visual relief alone is immense, and I’m already envisioning elegant vignettes and personal touches that will truly make this space sing. The mantel, once a functional necessity for media, has been wonderfully reclaimed as a decorative focal point. Thank goodness that TV is gone!

I’ll be sharing more details about the new TV spot and how we integrated it into our living space very soon, so stay tuned for that update! But for now, with this wonderful blank canvas before me, I’m eager to hear from you. What are your absolute favorite ways to decorate a mantel? Do you prefer a minimalist approach, or do you love to layer with various textures and heights? I’m already brainstorming how I’m going to fancy it up for the summer season, perhaps with some fresh greenery, light-colored ceramics, or a collection of coastal-inspired finds. Your ideas and inspiration would be incredibly helpful as I embark on this exciting new decorating adventure!

Speaking of brick paneling, I have another exciting project brewing in our house where I’m hoping to use this versatile material again. If it turns out the way I’ve envisioned it in my head, it’s going to be absolutely “awesomesauce!” The possibilities with faux brick paneling are truly endless, offering an affordable and impactful way to add texture and character to any space. It’s a testament to the power of DIY that a simple material can transform a room so dramatically. Does this updated faux fireplace look convincing to you? We think so! It’s amazing how a few well-chosen materials and a bit of effort can create such a realistic and impactful design feature.

On a slightly different note, our coffee table also received a little TLC recently. The top had really taken a beating with our little one constantly climbing all over it, so it was due for a fresh stain job. It’s still a work in progress, but these continuous small updates are part of the ongoing evolution of our home, making it more resilient and beautiful for our family’s dynamic life.

So now, it’s truly up to you, our cherished critics and fellow DIY enthusiasts. Are you a fan of this “alternate ending” for our faux fireplace, with its sleek, integrated firebox and cleared mantel?
