Kathleen Mower Introduces Her Marsh Song Junk Journal & Creative Process
Greetings everyone! I am absolutely delighted to introduce myself as a new member of the esteemed Graphics Fairy Design Team. My passion lies in mixed media art, with a particular love for designing and creating bespoke junk journals. The Graphics Fairy images have been a cornerstone of my crafting for many years, but joining the Premium Membership truly expanded my artistic horizons, opening up an even larger world of crafting possibilities with its treasure trove of exquisite vintage images. It’s a dream come true to be collaborating with such immense talent on this Design Team.
This particular journal, my Marsh Song Junk Journal, draws its profound inspiration from a beloved vintage novel, “A Girl of the Limberlost” by Gene Stratton Porter. Do you remember the captivating story of Elnora? Her character, despite possessing few material possessions and limited resources, radiated an abundance of courage and intelligence. She found immense comfort and solace in the marshland surrounding her, a landscape that ultimately provided the means for her education and her journey towards a joyful life. I love to imagine Elnora finding joy and connection with this journal. To bring the serene beauty of the marsh to life within its pages, I primarily utilized two incredible bundles from the Graphics Fairy Premium Membership site: the “Marsh & Pond” and “Marsh Song” collections. The process of discovering, selecting, fussy cutting, and creating intricate collages for both the cover and the various internal elements was an absolute joy. The journal itself boasts two thoughtfully hand-sewn signatures, encased within a cleverly recycled book cover. It’s adorned with a charming beaded elastic closure and a delightful tassel and charm dangle gracing its spine, adding an extra touch of vintage elegance to this mixed media art project.
Detailed Exploration of the Marsh Song Junk Journal Pages
The inside of both the front and back covers of this vintage-inspired journal features stunning printable pages from the “Marsh & Pond” bundle. The stately Great Heron, depicted against a backdrop of rich, sunset-colored stucco walls, creates an immediate sense of tranquility and beauty. Opposite this striking image, I’ve incorporated a textured, “painty” paper, which serves as a wonderfully versatile background. Its tactile quality makes it ideal for either written text, additional images, or personal photographs. This technique, involving gesso, acrylic paint, and distress ink, is a favorite of mine and is echoed on several other pages throughout the journal, contributing to a cohesive, artistic flow.
Creating digital collages is an incredibly rewarding activity, and the diverse elements available in the Graphics Fairy bundles make it remarkably simple to achieve beautifully layered designs. For instance, I created a charming layered window pocket directly on top of a digital collage. The inclusion of beautiful vintage postcard images, repurposed as perfect journal cards, adds a touch of nostalgic charm. As you explore this journal, you’ll likely notice my deep affection for adding multiple layers, creating depth and intrigue on every page of this unique junk journal art.
On one captivating spread, I transformed a striking vintage card image into a generously sized corner tuck spot. To make the smaller images truly pop, I embellished a delicate butterfly and a charming frog with an additional layer, giving them a three-dimensional effect. Each of these tiny embellishments received a meticulous detailing with Glossy Accents, enhancing their visual interest and tactile appeal within this exquisite DIY journal.
A vintage music cover, chosen for its perfectly complementary color palette, forms a lovely, evocative backdrop for an embossed paper tag and a captivating dragonfly image journal card. On the left side of this spread, I resized one of the Graphics Fairy’s pre-designed printable pages to create a large, folded journaling paper. This provides a generous amount of extra journaling space, a much-appreciated bonus in any journal, especially for those who love to write, sketch, or include cherished mementos in their art journaling projects.
Embracing Digital Collage and Tactile Elements in Journal Making
While the designers at The Graphics Fairy are truly exceptional, I’ve always enjoyed experimenting with my own digital design ideas, and some of the results are showcased within these pages. On these particular center pages, I deliberately chose to leave them free of additional decoration, allowing the full impact and beauty of the lovely digital collage images to shine through. A charming little frog image nestled in the left corner is a removable journal card, cleverly printed back to back and folded around the page, offering a delightful surprise element in this handmade journal.
Pockets are an absolute staple in all my journals. I adore the ability to tuck away small notes, cards, or tiny keepsakes behind a generous patch pocket, such as the one featured here. This spread incorporates a real feather, delicately sourced from a Green-Winged Teal duck. I carefully adhered the feather to a card and added some simple, elegant stitching to further embellish it, lending an authentic touch of nature. The right page features coffee-dyed braille paper, offering a unique texture, while an embossed index card tucked into the pocket adds even more tactile interest to this richly layered spread. Such details are key to creating a truly immersive mixed media journal.
My love for adding layers truly comes through in this journal! The subtly textured background on this pocket spread provides an excellent foundation for the subsequent layers built upon it. A removable guest check is nestled within, and there’s ample room for more papers and ephemera to be tucked inside the pocket. Altogether, this spread features an impressive six layers, harmoniously complemented by the beautifully “smooshed” inks on the opposite page, creating a visual and textural feast for any junk journal enthusiast.
What I affectionately call a “cluster peek-a-boo pocket” is one of my absolute favorite elements to create for a journal, and this one is no exception. Another real feather is incorporated here, helping to infuse yet more authenticity and a genuine connection to the natural marsh theme. These little touches elevate a simple journal into a truly artistic experience.
On the left side of another beautiful spread, a delicate colored digital butterfly sticker thoughtfully embellishes a simple black and white image. This provides a striking contrast to the right side, which boasts an elaborate, collaged tuck spot overflowing with lilies – a true celebration of the marshland’s vibrant flora!
The center spread of the second signature offered me yet another fantastic opportunity to delve into the creative process of digital collage. It’s always so much fun to blend various elements from the Graphics Fairy collection to tell a new visual story, making each journal a unique narrative of its own.
In this dynamic spread, a subtle digital butterfly sticker in one corner elegantly contrasts with a dramatically enlarged, elaborate belly band on the opposite page. I creatively repurposed the flap from an envelope and enhanced it with a gorgeous butterfly image, transforming it into a functional and beautiful element. Tucked behind this belly band is a truly lovely piece of handmade paper, offering additional, inspiring journaling space for personal reflections and creative expression.
Here, a simple yet expansive digital collage paper is beautifully embellished with three small pocket envelopes, ingeniously folded around the page. This design was inspired by Jane Chipp’s “Layered Pocket Tag Team” handcraft tutorial, found on the Premium Membership site. While I opted for a slightly different approach, I deeply appreciate the guidance from her tutorial – thank you, Jane, for the wonderful inspiration for this vintage junk journal element!
The final pocket in this enchanting journal is a straightforward thumb-cut patch pocket, gracefully layered atop a dynamic mixed media background featuring vibrant paint and delicate stamped swirls. A simple yet elegant vintage botanical image makes for a perfect journal card within this pocket. This blend of simple design with intricate background work is a hallmark of truly engaging junk journal ideas.
