Inspired by the Wild: A Journey to the Blue Ridge Mountains

Kelly Boler’s November junk journal draws its profound inspiration from a recent, deeply enriching stay in Asheville, North Carolina. Her time exploring the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains was more than just a hike; it was an immersive experience in nature’s embrace. Much of her journey involved the mindful collection of natural “talismans”—walnut hulls, acorn caps, and newly fallen autumn leaves. These weren’t just souvenirs; they were transformed into unique art supplies, meticulously processed to create one-of-a-kind elements for her journal. Imagine the rich, earthy tones of ink derived from walnut hulls and acorn caps, or the delicate, haunting imprints of eco-printed autumn leaves on paper. These organic materials form the very soul of this journal, a heartfelt celebration of the untamed forest and its countless wonders.

The Art of the Cover: Eco-Printing and Elegant Details

The journal’s captivating wraparound cover is crafted from Canson mixed media paper, a perfect canvas for Kelly’s artistic touch. This paper underwent a special steaming process with real autumn leaves, ensuring that their delicate veins and intricate shapes left a lasting, ghostly impression. The result is a cover that tells a story even before you open it, capturing the ephemeral beauty of fall foliage in a permanent, artistic form. Adding to its allure, the journal is gracefully tied with a piece of recycled sari silk. This luxurious, soft fabric not only secures the journal but also introduces an element of exotic elegance, creating a beautiful contrast with the rustic, nature-inspired cover.

A Glimpse Inside the “Owl in Woods” Junk Journal

Opening the “Owl in Woods” Junk Journal is like stepping into a hidden glade, each page unfolding a new facet of Kelly’s forest-inspired vision. To fill its pages, Kelly thoughtfully selected a diverse array of images from various bundles available at The Graphics Fairy’s Premium Membership site. While her primary aim was to evoke the rich tapestry of the fall season, her artistic sensibility led her to begin with some charming bird eggs, beautifully printed on tracing paper. These delicate images, sourced from the luscious Natural History Birds bundle, add a touch of timeless spring wonder amidst the autumn theme, symbolizing life and renewal within the forest.

The Allure of Owls and Forest Treasures

As the journal’s title suggests, this book is wonderfully “owl-heavy,” a testament to the undeniable charm of these magnificent nocturnal creatures. Even if actual owl sightings are rare, their mystique is universally acknowledged, and The Graphics Fairy’s vintage owl images are simply breathtaking. Kelly’s meticulous integration of these graphics brings a wise and watchful spirit to the journal. Beyond the owls, she has also incorporated various notecards adorned with a fascinating assortment of mushrooms, adding another layer of woodland magic and taxonomic interest to the pages. Each element is carefully chosen to deepen the reader’s connection to the forest’s hidden wonders.

A key feature of this journal is its functionality. All the beautifully illustrated notecards are thoughtfully backed with high-quality Derwent sketching paper. This practical design allows them to serve multiple purposes, inviting the owner to use them for note-taking, sketching, or even as miniature art canvases within the journal. This blend of aesthetic beauty and practical utility is a hallmark of truly exceptional junk journaling.

Embracing Vintage Ephemera: A Collector’s Dream

Like many of her fellow Design Team members, Kelly finds an irresistible charm in the bee-themed imagery from The Graphics Fairy’s Premium Members site. The “Beekeeping bundle,” with its vintage illustrations of bees and beekeepers, adds a delightful touch of rustic agricultural history to her woodland theme, reminding us of the interconnectedness of nature. This journal is a vibrant tapestry woven from ephemera sourced from a variety of Premium Member bundles, including: Fall Colors Ephemera, Autumn Botanicals, Autumn Hue Botanicals, Berries and Cherries, and even a hint of the whimsical from Naturalist Halloween. Each chosen piece contributes to the rich narrative and visual texture of the journal.

Throughout the journal, Kelly masterfully utilizes her homemade inks, derived from the very forest elements she collected, to add incredible depth and character to the pages. These organic inks, with their unique hues and textures, are not merely applied; they are integrated into the artistic process through pouring, dribbling, and various mark-making techniques. This creates fascinating “accidental patterns” that invite interaction, laying a creative path for the owner to follow when sketching or journaling. It transforms each page into an open invitation for personal expression, making the journal a collaborative artwork between artist and owner.

The thoughtful placement of elements, including strategically designed pockets, provides ample space for additional ephemera, personal mementos, or treasured notes. These pockets, sometimes bursting with more charming owl imagery, enhance the journal’s interactive nature and encourage further personalization. They are not just decorative but functional, echoing the organized chaos and delightful surprises found within a real forest.
