Inspiring Summer Homes 2018

Welcome to Our 1960 Colonial Summer Home Tour: Embracing Timeless Style and Lived-In Charm

Step inside our home, where classic elegance meets the delightful chaos of family life – a perfect representation of what we affectionately call our “mullet summer party.” Imagine walking through our front door: the foyer and dining room are meticulously styled, ready to welcome guests with an air of effortless sophistication. Yet, venture just beyond these initial spaces into the heart of our home, and you’ll discover a vibrant hub of creativity and joyful disarray: art projects in various stages, toy explosions marking playful adventures, and pool towels draped about, basking in the summer sun to dry. It’s a true reflection of our dynamic household, beautifully blending curated design with the authentic rhythms of everyday living.

Today, we’re thrilled to offer you an exclusive glimpse into the “business in the front” – those beautifully appointed areas of our 1960 colonial home that truly shine during our annual summer home tour. While my ambitious plans for this year’s tour were grander, a recently sprained ankle coupled with the delightful challenge of navigating two rooms while pregnant and balancing a camera proved to be my personal limit. Nevertheless, these carefully styled spaces are brimming with inspiration, showcasing how classic design and thoughtful touches can create a truly inviting atmosphere.

The Grand Entrance: Our Inviting Foyer

Welcome to our foyer, the very first impression guests receive upon entering our home. This space tells a curated story, suggesting a perfectly put-together household – though, if we’re being completely honest, it’s a charming illusion! Our family of three, while small, generates an incredible amount of energy and joyful chaos on a daily basis, especially as the vibrant days of summer unfold. This entryway, however, stands as a serene testament to the potential for elegant living, even amidst the wonderful whirlwind of family life. It’s a space where classic design principles meet a warm, inviting atmosphere, setting the tone for the rest of our 1960s colonial.

A Breath of Fresh Air: Seasonal Touches in the Foyer

Amidst the delightful frenzy that often characterizes May – from the end-of-year dance recitals and preschool graduations to school plays, backyard cookouts, birthdays, and Mother’s Day preparations – these simple bunches of fresh flowers from Trader Joe’s act as my essential moment of calm. May is consistently the month where I find myself most in need of a literal “stop-and-smell-the-flowers” pause, a gentle reminder to breathe and appreciate the fleeting beauty of the season. It’s a beautiful kind of busy, truly the most fun kind, and these small floral touches bring life and freshness to our entryway, perfectly aligning with our summer decor theme.

From Goldenrod to Classic Grey: A Foyer’s Remarkable Transformation

It feels truly incredible to reflect on how much this foyer has evolved in just one short year. At this time last year, these very walls were adorned in a vibrant goldenrod yellow, and the space was practically bare, devoid of furniture or any defining decor. It was a blank canvas yearning for character, and with a vision for timeless elegance, we embarked on its transformation. The magic began with a fresh coat of paint – specifically, Benjamin Moore Classic Grey – which instantly brightened and modernized the space while honoring the colonial architecture. This neutral backdrop became the perfect stage for our carefully chosen pieces.

The journey continued with smart, budget-friendly choices that brought immense charm. A few IKEA frames, thoughtfully arranged, formed the foundation of a captivating gallery wall, showcasing cherished memories and artistic prints that truly personalize the space. The real gem, however, was a beautiful chest discovered on Craigslist. This pre-loved piece, once overlooked, underwent a remarkable makeover, proving that with a little creativity and effort, second-hand finds can become stunning focal points. The combination of fresh paint, strategic decor, and DIY ingenuity not only fixed the lack of furniture but imbued the foyer with a welcoming, classic style that perfectly suits our 1960 colonial home. This transformation stands as a testament to how accessible and rewarding home design can be, proving that even a limited budget can yield truly stunning results.

Gather Around: Our Elegant Dining Room, the Heart of Family Celebrations

Our dining room, while still a slight work in progress with just a couple of items remaining on the to-do list, holds a very special place in our home. It’s a room that intrinsically means a special kind of day, reserved primarily for cherished weekend and holiday gatherings. This is where our extended families sprawl comfortably around the table after enjoying delicious backyard cookouts, sharing laughter and stories that echo through the space. We are incredibly fortunate to live just a few minutes away from Robert’s parents, my own parents, and my beloved grandmother, which means family gatherings happen constantly throughout the year, especially during the warm, inviting months of summer. This room isn’t just about dining; it’s about connection, tradition, and the enduring bonds of family, all set within the charming backdrop of our 1960s colonial architecture.

From Craigslist Charm to Custom Masterpiece: Our Dining Table Story

The centerpiece of our dining room, a robust and inviting table, also began its life as another fantastic Craigslist find. Its transformation is a story of vision and DIY dedication. We lovingly painted the base, giving it a fresh, modern foundation, and then, with a touch of craftsmanship, we built a custom oak tabletop. This bespoke top not only adds warmth and character but ensures the table perfectly fits our space and family needs. Once this foundational piece was in place, the rest of the room’s design organically fell into place around it, creating a cohesive and harmonious aesthetic that is both classic and comfortable. The chairs, carefully chosen to complement the table’s rustic elegance, and the understated yet impactful lighting fixture all contribute to a dining experience that feels both special and incredibly welcoming. It’s a space designed for lingering conversations and the joy of shared meals, epitomizing timeless summer style.

A Celebratory Tablescape: Mother’s Day Charm

In anticipation of a special weekend, I had the pleasure of setting our dining table for a wonderful Mother’s Day celebration. This year promises to be particularly delightful, as Robert and my dad are taking charge of smoking a delicious brisket for my grandmother, my mom, and me. Any holiday that allows me to step away from the cooking and fully embrace my role as decorator is an absolute win in my book! The tablescape itself is a testament to understated elegance and seasonal freshness. Soft linen napkins, delicate floral arrangements, and carefully chosen dinnerware create an inviting and celebratory atmosphere. I adore the process of layering textures and subtle colors, bringing warmth and a touch of summer vibrancy to the table without overwhelming the senses. It’s about creating a space that feels both refined and utterly comfortable, perfect for making cherished family memories.

Though, I’ve got to be honest with you all… that tempting apple pie you see gracing the table might not quite make it to the actual weekend celebration! A true testament to the irresistible charm of homemade goodness, it’s often the first to disappear, hinting at the delicious feasts shared in this very room.

The Art of Togetherness: Our Antique Mirror Gallery Wall

Speaking of special women in my life, a couple of months ago, my mom and I embarked on a truly memorable project: creating this stunning antique mirror gallery wall. It has quickly become one of my absolute favorite DIY endeavors, not just for its aesthetic appeal, but for the precious time and shared creativity it represents. My mom, a true pioneer, was embracing the DIY spirit long before it became a mainstream trend, and her guidance and expertise were invaluable. Together, we scoured antique shops and flea markets for unique frames, each with its own story, then carefully arranged them to create a dynamic and reflective display. The varying shapes, sizes, and aged patinas of the mirrors add incredible depth and character to the dining room, amplifying light and making the space feel expansive and sophisticated. This gallery wall isn’t just decor; it’s a collaborative piece of art, a symbol of our bond, and a testament to the beauty of incorporating meaningful, hand-selected pieces into your home’s design. It adds an incomparable layer of history and personality to our 1960s colonial, creating a focal point that is both elegant and deeply personal.

Behind the Scenes: The Beautiful Reality of Summer Survival Mode

As you’ve seen, the front of our 1960 colonial home exudes a calm, classic charm, perfect for welcoming guests and showcasing timeless summer style. Yet, life, especially with a busy family, is rarely picture-perfect. I promise to share the rest of our house, all beautifully done up for summer, as soon as my sprained ankle (affectionately dubbed “Hop-Along Lauren”) fully heals, and I manage to artfully navigate the delightful chaos of toy explosions and the inevitable pile of pool towels that accompany sunny days. We’re deep in what I call “survival mode” right now, embracing the whirlwind of summer activities and the joyful messes they bring.

If you’re a fellow mama, and the vibrant, activity-packed month of May (and now the start of summer!) is also kicking your booty, know that you are not alone. We deserve at least this upcoming Sunday to truly relax, don’t we? Perhaps? There’s a beautiful solidarity in recognizing that even in the midst of creating beautiful homes, the real, lived-in moments are what truly fill our lives with joy. So, here’s to embracing both the perfectly styled vignettes and the charmingly messy realities of summer life in a beloved colonial home. Stay tuned for more glimpses into our summer sanctuary!
