Transforming Your Kitchen: How to Create a High-End Freestanding Pantry from IKEA Hemnes Cabinets with Antique Mirror Film
Are you struggling with an overflowing pantry or a complete lack of kitchen food storage? If so, you’re not alone! Many homeowners face the constant challenge of keeping their kitchen essentials organized and easily accessible. We were in the same boat, constantly battling clutter and inefficiency in our food storage system. That’s why we embarked on a DIY journey to create a custom, high-end freestanding pantry cupboard using IKEA Hemnes cabinets, and the results have been nothing short of transformative. Say goodbye to scattered groceries and hello to a beautifully organized and functional kitchen space!

This project could easily be called “Kitchen Pantry 2.0” because it represents a significant upgrade from our previous, less-than-ideal setup. While the minimalist lifestyle certainly has its appeal, and many manage perfectly well with compact kitchen spaces, our family’s needs demanded more. We entertain frequently and prepare the vast majority of our meals at home, which means we accumulate a substantial amount of groceries, ingredients, and kitchen supplies. For years, we squeezed chip bags, canned goods, and various pantry items onto a couple of small shelves in our laundry room cabinet, a system that quickly proved unsustainable.
Update: Discover how we meticulously organized our freestanding IKEA pantry cupboard for maximum efficiency here.

Why an IKEA Hemnes Pantry Cabinet Might Be Your Best Storage Solution
Our kitchen was in desperate need of a dedicated and efficient pantry, leading us to consider a complete overhaul of our food storage strategy. If you find yourself with extremely limited built-in kitchen cabinet space or are living without a traditional pantry altogether, a custom IKEA Hemnes pantry cabinet can be an absolute game-changer. It offers an incredibly versatile and budget-friendly solution to a common household problem.
The beauty of the IKEA Hemnes series lies in its classic design and sturdy construction, making it an ideal candidate for customization. Unlike basic laminate units, Hemnes is crafted from solid pine and particleboard with a wood veneer, which makes it much more receptive to paint and other modifications, allowing for a truly bespoke look. This freestanding approach means you don’t have to commit to permanent built-in structures, offering flexibility for future renovations or even if you move homes. For us, it was the perfect answer to housing our extensive collection of spices, dried goods, snacks, and baking supplies that previously had no proper home.

Beyond IKEA Organizers: The Need for a Dedicated Pantry Solution
Before this significant upgrade, I had even attempted to implement a seemingly clever storage system within an existing upper kitchen cabinet, complete with handy printable labels. While it provided a temporary fix and some semblance of order, after a year, it became clear that this solution was simply not robust enough for our family’s needs. The limited space meant constant reorganizing, items getting lost, and a general feeling of disarray despite my best efforts.

As we continued to assess our kitchen’s functionality, we realized that our existing coffee bar, situated on the far wall, wasn’t being utilized to its full potential. It was a pretty piece, but it was occupying valuable real estate that could be better allocated. So, in a moment of clarity, we made a crucial decision – plot twist! We relocated that piece, making way for something truly impactful. This serves as a vital reminder: if something in your home isn’t serving its purpose efficiently, don’t hesitate to change it. A beautiful space that lacks functionality is ultimately a wasted space.

DIY IKEA Hemnes Pantry Cabinet: Step-by-Step Transformation
With our new plan in motion, we moved onto “Plan B,” which involved assembling two IKEA Hemnes glass-front cabinets. While IKEA assembly might intimidate some, my partner, Robert, surprisingly finds joy in it, likening it to building with giant LEGOs. His enthusiasm certainly helped make the process smoother!

Essential Supplies for Your IKEA Hemnes Pantry Project
(Some affiliate links are provided below for your convenience. Full disclosure here.)
- 2 IKEA Hemnes glass front cabinets (these are perfect for showcasing the antique mirror film effect)
- Kilz Adhesion Primer (absolutely crucial for painting laminate or factory-finished surfaces)
- High-quality cabinet/trim enamel paint in your chosen color (We used Behr Marquee enamel satin paint in Sherwin Williams Billiard to perfectly match our existing lower kitchen cabinets, creating a cohesive look.)
- Angled Paint Brush (A 1.5-inch angled Purdy brush is highly recommended for precision and smooth application.)
- Masking liquid (Optional, but incredibly beneficial for cleanly painting around glass panes. Seriously, don’t skip this if you value your time and patience!)
- Antique mirror window film (The secret ingredient for that custom, high-end look and to discreetly hide pantry contents.)
- Spray bottle filled with water and 8 drops of dish soap (This solution aids in easy film application and repositioning.)
- Sharp scissors
- Sharpie marker
- Credit card or a dedicated squeegee (Essential for smoothing out air bubbles in the film.)
- X-acto knife (For precise trimming of excess film.)
- Clean, dry rags or paper towels
The Transformation Steps: Bringing Your Custom Pantry to Life
1. Assemble the IKEA Hemnes Cabinets: Begin by following the instructions to assemble your IKEA Hemnes cabinets. While some find this tedious, focusing on each step ensures a sturdy base for your customization. Double-check all connections to ensure stability, especially since these will be holding significant weight.

2. Prepare and Paint the Cabinet Frames: Painting IKEA furniture, especially pieces with a laminate or factory finish, requires a specific approach to ensure durability and prevent chipping. We highly recommend following these detailed steps for painting IKEA furniture to achieve a professional, long-lasting finish. The absolute key to success here is using a high-quality adhesion primer, such as Kilz Adhesion. This primer creates a strong bond between the slick IKEA surface and your chosen paint, preventing frustrating scuffs and chips down the line.

After a thorough cleaning, apply a thin, even coat of Kilz Adhesion primer. Allow it to dry completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Once dry, proceed with two to three thin coats of your cabinet/trim enamel paint, allowing ample drying time between each coat. Thin coats build up a more durable and smoother finish than one thick coat.

3. Paint the Glass-Front Cabinet Doors (with a crucial tip!): Once the primer and paint have fully dried on the cabinet frames, repeat the painting process for the glass-front cabinet doors. However, here’s a crucial tip I learned the hard way: before you start painting, generously brush masking liquid onto the glass panes. I’ve used this technique successfully for painting French doors in the past (you can find the how-to here), and it makes painting around glass incredibly easier and faster.
The Ultimate IKEA Pantry Cabinet Painting Tip
Masking liquid works by creating a temporary, peelable barrier on the glass. Once your paint is completely dry, simply peel off the masking liquid, and it will take any stray paint along with it, leaving a perfectly clean, crisp edge. I made the mistake of thinking I could just scrape off the dried paint from the glass with a razor blade later. Big mistake! That paint was stubbornly adhered, turning a simple task into a frustrating chore. Learn from my experience; this step is a true time-saver and guarantees a professional finish without the headache. (Consider me your guinea pig, taking one for the team in the world of DIY blogging!)
Having skipped this step, I had to proceed with paint still stuck on the glass, which complicated the next stage of applying the mirror film.

4. Apply the Antique Mirror Window Film: To discreetly hide the contents of your pantry and simultaneously add a touch of sophistication, we sourced this incredible antique mirror window film. It remarkably mimics the authentic look of a genuine antique mirror, elevating the IKEA cabinet to a truly custom piece. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this film also serves a practical purpose: it ties in with the stainless steel appliance accents in our kitchen and strategically bounces light from the window on the opposite side of the room, brightening what would otherwise be a darker interior wall.
For a detailed visual guide on installation, you can refer to this helpful video provided by the film manufacturer.

5. Measure and Cut the Film: Carefully measure the exact width and height of each glass panel on your cabinet doors. To allow for slight adjustments and trimming, add an extra 1 inch to both the width and height measurements.
6. Mark and Cut the Film: Using a Sharpie, mark these oversized measurements onto the backside (the release liner side) of the window film. Then, cut the film using sharp scissors, ensuring clean, straight lines.
7. Prepare the Film for Application: Lay the cut film on a clean, flat surface with the release liner facing up. Slowly and carefully peel off the backing liner while simultaneously spritzing the adhesive side of the film with your spray bottle filled with the water and dish soap solution. Ensure the entire adhesive surface is thoroughly saturated; this lubrication is key for easy positioning and bubble-free application.

8. Prepare the Glass Surface: Likewise, generously spray the glass pane on the cabinet door with the same water and soap solution. This creates a slippery surface, allowing you to easily slide and reposition the film.

9. Position and Smooth the Film: Carefully lift the wet film and position it onto the wet glass pane. The water solution will allow you to slide it into the perfect position. Once satisfied with the placement, begin smoothing out any air bubbles. Start from the center of the film and firmly work your way outwards towards the edges using a credit card or a squeegee. Apply consistent pressure to push out all the water and air from beneath the film.

10. Trim Excess and Clean Up: Once the film is perfectly smooth and positioned, use a sharp X-acto knife and a straight edge (like a ruler) to carefully trim any excess film around the edges of the glass pane for a precise, clean finish. Immediately wipe up any residual water or soap solution from the film and the cabinet frame with a clean, dry towel. Allow the film to dry and adhere completely over the next 24-48 hours. And just like that, you’re done! Your custom IKEA Hemnes pantry cabinet is ready to impress.

IKEA Hemnes Pantry Cabinet Storage Solutions: Maximizing Functionality
With the aesthetic transformation complete, the next phase is all about maximizing the internal storage and organization of these beautiful cabinets. I’m still in the process of consolidating all our food items from various nooks and crannies around the kitchen into these dedicated pantry units. The goal is to create a highly efficient, organized system where everything has its designated spot, making meal prep and grocery shopping a breeze. This might involve incorporating various pantry organizers such as clear containers, tiered shelving, pull-out baskets, and drawer dividers to truly optimize every inch of space. Wrapping my brain around the perfect organizational scheme takes time, but I am confident that soon, opening these doors will reveal a perfectly ordered and highly functional pantry.

Update: Our organized IKEA pantry cabinet is now a dream come true! It’s incredibly satisfying to open these doors and drawers and instantly find exactly what I’m looking for. The initial effort put into planning and implementing the right storage solutions has truly paid off in daily convenience and reduced kitchen stress.

The Final Pantry Cabinet Results: A High-End Look on a Budget
We are absolutely thrilled with the outcome of our IKEA Hemnes pantry cabinet project. The custom paint color perfectly complements our existing kitchen cabinetry, creating a cohesive and beautifully integrated look. The antique mirror film on the glass doors adds an unexpected touch of elegance and sophistication, making these IKEA units appear far more expensive and custom-made than they actually are. It truly gives them a high-end feel, transforming a functional necessity into a stylish statement piece.
One of the significant advantages of opting for freestanding cabinets is the flexibility they offer. Should we decide to replace our kitchen flooring in the future, these cabinets won’t require any demolition, simplifying what could otherwise be a complicated and costly renovation. Rest assured, while freestanding, they are securely anchored to the wall, which is an essential safety measure we always prioritize. The combination of thoughtful customization and practical design has resulted in pantry cabinets that are not only incredibly functional but also undeniably beautiful. They look downright fancy for IKEA, wouldn’t you agree?
