How to Build Your Own Planked Board and Batten Accent Wall Part 1

Transform Your Master Bedroom with a DIY Planked Board and Batten Accent Wall

Embracing change can be a challenging yet profoundly rewarding experience. Much like dedicating yourself to a new fitness routine or adopting healthier eating habits, diving into a significant DIY home improvement project demands effort and perseverance. Yet, the transformation that unfolds, both in your space and within yourself, makes every ounce of that effort absolutely worthwhile. This sentiment has been a guiding principle as we embarked on an ambitious journey to revitalize our master bedroom, proving that the toughest endeavors often yield the most beautiful results.

For months, the vision for our master bedroom was a swirling dream, carefully outlined in our design plan. We yearned for a sanctuary that blended modern rustic charm with timeless architectural character. While the planning was exciting, it wasn’t until recently that we truly rolled up our sleeves and plunged into the physical work. And by “plunging in,” I mean we officially inaugurated the project with a playful coloring session on the wall alongside our little one, marking the start of a serious (but fun!) home transformation.

Crafting a Vision: The Perfect Accent Wall for Our Master Retreat

Master Bedroom Before: DIY Planked Board and Batten Accent Wall Part 1

From the very beginning, I envisioned our master bedroom requiring a distinct focal point—an accent wall that would infuse the space with unique architectural interest and a sense of depth. The options were plentiful, each offering its own charm and style. There was the ever-popular farmhouse aesthetic of DIY shiplap, a classic choice for adding texture and rustic appeal.

Another contender was the timeless elegance of floor-to-ceiling board and batten, renowned for its stately presence and ability to elevate any room. Or perhaps a more structured board and batten grid, offering a contemporary geometric pattern.

However, it was a captivating project from Jenna Sue Design that truly crystallized our vision. Her approach inspired us to blend elements from all these styles—the horizontal planks of shiplap, combined with the vertical battens of a classic board and batten, to create a unique and visually engaging backdrop for our bed. This design would provide both the rustic charm we loved and the architectural sophistication we sought, making our master bedroom truly one-of-a-kind. We knew this combination of planked board and batten would be the perfect focal point, adding texture, depth, and a bespoke feel to our space.

Essential Tools and Materials for Your DIY Accent Wall

Before embarking on any DIY home improvement project, thorough preparation is crucial. Gathering all your tools and materials in advance not only saves time but also ensures a smoother, safer building process. Here’s a detailed list of what we used to create our stunning planked board and batten accent wall. (Affiliate links are provided below for convenience, helping you find exactly what you need. For more information, please see my disclosures here.)

Materials List:

  • 3 – 1/8″ primed hardwood plywood sheets: These will form the horizontal planks of your accent wall. We had ours cut into 8″ wide strips using a table saw for consistent sizing and a professional finish. Primed plywood saves a significant step in the painting process.
  • 1 – 1″x4″x12″ pine board: This piece will serve as the top horizontal rail of your board and batten design, effectively acting as a simple crown molding to finish the top edge.
  • 4 – 1″x2″x8″ pine boards: These are your vertical battens and your bottom horizontal rail. They will cover the seams of the plywood planks and create the classic board and batten look.

Tools You’ll Need:

  • Pneumatic nail gun and compressor: Essential for quickly and securely attaching the wood pieces to the wall. We rely on this one for its reliability and power, making installation efficient.
  • 2″ finishing nails: The appropriate length to ensure a strong hold without penetrating too far into the wall or studs.
  • Jigsaw: Indispensable for making precise cutouts around wall outlets, light switches, or any other obstacles on your wall, ensuring a seamless finish.
  • Stud finder: A critical safety tool. It allows you to locate wall studs, ensuring that your nails hit solid wood for maximum stability and preventing damage to electrical or plumbing lines.
  • Level: Absolutely vital for ensuring all your planks and battens are installed perfectly straight, creating a professional and aesthetically pleasing result.
  • Quarters or spacers of your choosing: These small, consistent items are used to create even gaps between your horizontal planks, contributing to the distinct planked look.
  • Measuring Tape: For accurate measurements of your wall and wood pieces.
  • Pencil: For marking cut lines, stud locations, and placement.
  • Safety Glasses and Gloves: Always prioritize safety when using power tools and handling wood.

Step-by-Step Guide: Installing Your Planked Board and Batten Wall

Starting the DIY Planked Board and Batten Accent Wall

With all your materials and tools at hand, you’re ready to bring your vision to life. Here’s how we tackled the installation process, step by step, to create a stunning accent wall that truly transforms the room.

1. Locate and Mark Studs

The very first and most crucial step is to locate all the studs in your wall. Using your stud finder, carefully scan the entire wall and mark each stud with a pencil. Nailing into studs will provide the strongest, most secure attachment for your wood planks and battens, ensuring your accent wall lasts for years to come. This also helps prevent accidental damage to hidden electrical wires or plumbing.

2. Install the Top Horizontal Rail

We began by nailing the 1″x4″x12″ pine board horizontally at the very top of the wall. This piece serves as the uppermost boundary for our planked section and will eventually be painted to resemble a simple, elegant crown molding. Use your level to ensure this board is perfectly straight before nailing it securely into the studs.

3. Add a Personal Touch (Optional)

Before the wood went up, Robert, in a sweet gesture, wrote 1 Corinthians 13:13 above where our bed would be. It’s a small detail, but it adds a deeply personal and meaningful layer to our home. Consider adding your own special message or design to your wall before covering it!

4. Install the Horizontal Plywood Planks

Next, we divided the wall into three horizontal sections to determine the length for our plywood strips. We then cut the 1/8″ primed hardwood plywood into 8″ wide strips using a table saw, ensuring consistent lengths for each section. Starting from the bottom of the wall (or just above the baseboard), we began nailing these strips horizontally. For consistent spacing between each plank, we used quarters as temporary spacers as we went along. This creates the subtle, textured planked effect. Don’t worry if the plank seams aren’t perfectly flush; these will be covered later by the vertical battens.

5. Navigate Wall Outlets and Obstacles

When you encounter a wall outlet or switch, measure carefully and use your jigsaw to cut out the exact shape from the plywood plank. This ensures a clean, professional finish around any electrical fixtures. Patience and precision are key here to avoid having to re-cut.

6. Attach the Bottom Horizontal Rail (Base Batten)

Once all the horizontal planks are installed up to the desired height, nail a 1″x2″ pine board along the bottom of the planked section. This piece will act as your base batten, providing a clean finish and defining the lower edge of your accent wall. Ensure it’s level and securely fastened.

7. Install the Vertical Battens

With the horizontal planks and top/bottom rails in place, it’s time to add the vertical battens. These are typically placed over the seams of your plywood planks (or at aesthetically pleasing intervals). Using your level, position the 1″x2″ pine boards vertically and nail them firmly into place. Robert opted for a traditional hammer for this step, embracing an old-school approach, but a nail gun works just as well. The battens not only add to the aesthetic but also neatly conceal any imperfections from the plank seams, creating a crisp, finished look.

The Immediate Impact and Anticipated Transformation

Voila! The structure of our planked board and batten accent wall is now complete. Even without the final touches, the room already feels dramatically different. The architectural interest we craved is instantly apparent, adding a sophisticated and custom feel to our master bedroom. It’s amazing how a simple wall treatment can profoundly impact the ambiance of an entire space.

The next crucial step is painting, which I’ll be tackling this week. Filling nail holes, caulking seams, and applying the perfect color will truly bring this accent wall to its full potential, transforming the raw wood into a polished, seamless feature. I can already envision the complete room coming to life, and I’m incredibly excited to continue with the remaining elements of this master bedroom makeover. The progress we’ve made so far fills me with anticipation for the grand reveal.

The Beautiful Chaos of DIY: Embracing the Journey

Remember that sentiment about “change being a beautiful pain”? Well, embarking on a major DIY project like this accent wall is living proof. While the end result is undoubtedly rewarding, the process itself comes with its own unique set of challenges and temporary chaos.

Master bedroom during DIY project, furniture moved

Navigating around a mountain of displaced furniture crammed at the foot of our bed in the dark each night has certainly added an interesting twist to our evenings. And it’s a familiar pattern: whenever a big home improvement project kicks off, the tidiness of the rest of our house seems to go down with the ship. It’s a temporary pandemonium, a testament to the fact that creativity often thrives amidst a bit of disarray.

But through it all, the unwavering belief that “it’ll all be worth it” keeps us going. It’s the same motivational chant I hear from Jillian Michaels during my 30 Day Shred workouts every morning – pushing past the discomfort to achieve a better outcome. The satisfaction of creating something beautiful with your own hands, and seeing your home transform, is an unparalleled reward. This accent wall isn’t just a construction project; it’s a testament to our dedication to creating a truly personalized and beloved living space.
