Hello everyone! I’m delighted to share my December design team project for The Graphics Fairy premium membership site. For the foundation of this journal, I chose an antique book, immediately drawn to its stunning, vibrant ruby red cover. This rich, deep hue became the cornerstone of my inspiration. To complement the cover and add a touch of vintage glamour, I incorporated a gorgeous vintage rhinestone bracelet as part of the journal’s closure. The way the rhinestones sparkle against the deep red is simply captivating! This beautiful red also served as a guiding color palette for many of the internal pages, creating a cohesive and luxurious feel throughout the journal. While red isn’t typically my go-to color when creating, I was truly enchanted by how seamlessly this journal came together. The profound connection I feel to red roses, which always remind me of my beloved grandfather, also played a significant role in my color choice and thematic elements.
I strongly believe that infusing our art with personal symbolism is paramount to creating truly meaningful pieces. Within the pages of my journals, you’ll often discover elements chosen for their deep personal significance to me, much like the red roses. While most observers might not immediately grasp the profound meanings behind these specific choices, I firmly believe that the emotional energy and intention I invest in them are subtly conveyed through the artwork itself. I wholeheartedly encourage each of you to weave little bits of your own personal story and meaning into your journals. These intimate touches transform a beautiful creation into a cherished heirloom. For instance, I also have a deep affection for doves, which evoke fond memories of my other grandfather, so you’ll frequently see them making an appearance in my various art projects. Embracing this practice of personal symbolism will undoubtedly elevate your journal, making it uniquely special and profoundly personal to you.
The original spine of this antique book, while charming, simply wasn’t robust enough to accommodate the luscious fullness that a junk journal inevitably acquires. As many seasoned junk journal artists know, these beautiful creations tend to expand and become wonderfully “chunky” rather quickly! To address this, I decided to ingeniously extend the spine using a piece of luxurious silk velvet. This not only provided the necessary space for my pages but also added an exquisite touch of texture and elegance to the journal’s exterior. I drew immense inspiration for this technique from my dear art friend, Maria, who has masterfully extended the spines of old books on numerous occasions. I find this process utterly fascinating, especially because I have a deep love for transforming old books into journal covers. This method allows you the freedom to create a journal of virtually any size from an existing book, enabling you to include as many pages and embellishments as your heart desires. Inside this particular journal, I adorned many of the pages with stunning typography images sourced directly from The Graphics Fairy Premium site. I am perpetually enchanted by the exquisite selection of beautiful French papers and elegant script writing available there. For this project, I set myself a creative challenge: to utilize a significant number of The Graphics Fairy images as actual, foundational pages within the journal, and I am absolutely delighted with the final outcome. Furthermore, I hold a special affection for the diverse collection of old sheet music available on the site; to me, it’s an indispensable staple in the creation of any junk journal. Its versatility is unmatched, making it perfect for pages, tags, or even as evocative backgrounds, a practice I employ frequently.
Beyond the premium digital images, I also artfully incorporated many of my beloved vintage wallpapers. I daresay you’d be hard-pressed to find a journal I create that doesn’t feature some form of antique wallpaper, adding layers of texture, history, and a touch of nostalgic charm. Furthermore, I included numerous images of vintage ladies, as they hold a special place in my artistic heart. I was particularly thrilled to finally use a specific image from the Emma bundle, depicting two ladies engrossed in reading. I had been patiently awaiting just the right journal to feature this delightful scene! I thoughtfully paired it with one of the elegant gold tin type frames from the Book Covers & Tin Types bundle. The harmonious combination of the reading ladies within the intricate tin type frame created a truly beautiful and captivating visual narrative, enhancing the overall vintage aesthetic of the journal.
