There are moments in life that reshape your perspective on what’s truly challenging, and for me, hanging wallpaper was one of them. For years, I’d heard the ominous warning: “If you want to test your marriage, try hanging wallpaper together.” This adage loomed large in my mind, painting vivid pictures of marital strife, arguments, and possibly even the cops finding one of us comically entombed in a roll of floral print. Consequently, I meticulously avoided anything to do with that “w” word.
My husband, Robert, and I have tackled numerous DIY projects with remarkable harmony. We can install custom built-ins, grooving to “Don’t Stop Believin’,” and effortlessly trim out windows without a single disagreement. Yet, the mere thought of wallpapering together felt like an insurmountable hurdle, a true test of our bond that I was simply not ready to face. But as fate would have it, a unique opportunity arose that forced me to confront this DIY fear head-on, albeit with a different partner in crime.

With Robert tied up at the office for a few days, my amazing mom, who boasts years of wallpapering experience from my childhood home, graciously stepped in. I practically begged her to impart her wisdom, and to my absolute surprise, the entire process was not only manageable but genuinely enjoyable! It wasn’t the kind of fun you’d associate with a beach vacation, but more akin to the satisfying challenge of assembling a 10,000-piece jigsaw puzzle. It required effort, patience, and precision, but the reward was immense. And honestly, any excuse to spend quality time with my mom is a win in my book (no pun intended!).
This experience completely transformed my perception of wallpapering. It proved that this seemingly daunting task is well within the reach of any DIY enthusiast, regardless of prior experience. If you, like me, are a complete newcomer to the world of wallpaper, fear not! I’m here to share the invaluable tips and tricks I picked up along the way. (Please excuse the less-than-perfect photography; the lighting in our powder room presented a challenge, but I promise the steps are clear!)

Essential Supplies for Your Wallpaper Project
Gathering Your Tools: Having the right equipment makes all the difference for a smooth and successful wallpaper installation. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you’ll need. (Some affiliate links are provided below for your convenience, allowing you to easily find the exact tools we used.)
- Wallpaper Size (or wallpaper primer): Crucial for proper adhesion and repositioning.
- Wallpaper of your choice: We opted for this elegant black and white floral pre-pasted vinyl wallpaper, which was surprisingly forgiving for beginners.

- Plumb bob or laser level: For ensuring your first strip is perfectly vertical – a foundational step!
- Pencil: For marking measurements and plumb lines.
- Wallpaper paste and paste brush: If your chosen wallpaper is not pre-pasted.
- Tape measure: For accurate wall and wallpaper strip measurements.
- Scissors: For initial cuts and intricate detailing around obstacles.
- L-square tool (optional but recommended): Helps in making perfectly straight cuts on your wallpaper.
- Sponge: For cleaning excess paste and smoothing.
- Clean, damp rags: For wiping surfaces and keeping your workspace tidy.
- Paper hanging brush or plastic smoother: For eliminating air bubbles and ensuring smooth application.
- Metal edge: A straight edge for trimming wallpaper precisely.
- Utility knife and plenty of sharp blades: Crucial for clean, precise cuts against trim and edges.
- Seam roller: For securing seams between wallpaper panels.
- Ladder: For reaching the top sections of your walls.
- A friend willing to help out: Seriously, this is a game-changer for easier handling of long strips.
- Long work table: An absolute must for unrolling, measuring, and cutting your wallpaper strips comfortably.
Step-by-Step Guide to Flawless Wallpaper Installation
1. Prepare Your Walls for Success: Before you even think about unrolling your first strip, ensure your walls are immaculate. A smooth, clean surface is paramount for optimal adhesion and a professional finish. If your walls are currently painted a dark color, it’s highly recommended to prime them with white paint or a dedicated wallpaper primer, especially if your chosen wallpaper is light-colored or white. Not all wallpapers are opaque, and dark undertones can show through, compromising the final look.
2. Flawless Foundation: Patch and Sand: Address any imperfections on your walls. Fill nail holes, cracks, or other blemishes with spackle, ensuring the surface is perfectly smooth by sanding it down once dry. If there’s old wallpaper present, it must be completely removed. Attempting to wallpaper over existing wallpaper or uneven surfaces will lead to bumps, bubbles, and a less-than-satisfactory result.
3. The Magic of Wallpaper Size: The evening before you plan to hang your wallpaper, apply a coat of wallpaper size to your walls. This step is absolutely KEY! Wallpaper size creates a slightly slick surface, giving you invaluable “wiggle room” to reposition and slide your wallpaper strips into place, which is essential for matching patterns perfectly. It also helps the wallpaper adhere better and makes future removal easier.
4. Establish Your Starting Point: For beginners, it’s best to begin wallpapering on a flat, unobstructed wall, rather than in a corner. Corners are rarely perfectly square, which can complicate your initial alignment. A flat wall, free from light switches or doorways, allows you to get comfortable with the process before tackling trickier areas. To ensure your first sheet is perfectly straight, use a plumb bob suspended from the ceiling or a laser level to mark a vertical line with a pencil. This plumb line is your guide for the first strip.

5. Measure Your Wall Height: Using a reliable tape measure, determine the exact height of your wall from floor to ceiling. Once you have this measurement, add an extra 4 inches. This allowance provides a margin for error and gives you enough overhang at the top and bottom for precise trimming.
6. Preparing Your First Strip: Unroll your wallpaper onto your long work table. Decide where you want the top of your wallpaper pattern to begin on the wall. Using the measurement from Step 5, mark a straight line across your wallpaper strip with a pencil and an L-square tool. This ensures a perfectly straight cut, which is critical for a professional finish.
7. Precision Cutting: Carefully cut your wallpaper strip along the line you just marked. Take your time and use sharp scissors or a utility knife to achieve a clean, crisp edge. This will be your first full panel, so accuracy here is important.

8. Activating the Adhesive (or Applying Paste): This step varies depending on your wallpaper type:
- For pre-pasted wallpaper: Loosely roll your cut wallpaper strip with the backing facing outwards. Submerge the rolled paper into your water-filled trough, carefully unrolling it to ensure the entire backing gets thoroughly wet. Alternatively, if you have a large, flat tray, you can lay the paper face down and submerge it to wet the backing evenly.
- For non-pasted wallpaper: Lay your wallpaper strip backing-side-up on your work table. Using a roller or paste brush, apply a generous, even layer of wallpaper paste across the entire backing surface. Ensure no dry spots are left.

9. The “Booking” Process: To allow the paste to fully activate (for pre-pasted) or soften (for non-pasted), loosely fold the paper from both ends onto itself, meeting in the middle. This technique is known as “booking the paper.” Be careful not to crease the paper during this step. Let the booked paper sit for 2-3 minutes. This crucial waiting period allows the adhesive to become fully pliable. After booking, promptly wipe your work table clean with a damp sponge and dry it with rags before proceeding to cut and paste your next panel.

10. Hanging Your First Panel: This step is significantly easier with two people. Carefully unfold your booked wallpaper strip. With one person holding the top of the strip and the other guiding the bottom, lift the panel and align it with the starting line you marked on the wall (from Step 4). Begin pressing the top portion to the wall.
11. Precise Alignment: Once the top edge is securely in place, carefully align the side edge of the wallpaper strip precisely with your plumb line. Take your time to get this absolutely perfect, as it sets the standard for all subsequent panels. Smooth the paper downwards and outwards from the center.
12. Smoothing Out Imperfections: Using your paper hanging brush or plastic smoother, work from the center of the panel outwards, gently but firmly pressing out any air bubbles and excess paste. Keep a sponge and damp rags handy to immediately wipe away any paste that oozes from the edges. This process may take several minutes to ensure the panel is completely smooth against the wall.

13. Trimming Excess Wallpaper: Once the panel is smooth, use a metal edge to press the wallpaper firmly into the crease where the wall meets the ceiling and the baseboard. With a sharp utility knife blade, carefully cut away the excess paper along this crease. Change your blade frequently to ensure clean, sharp cuts and prevent tearing.

14. Pattern Matching for Subsequent Panels: For your second panel and all subsequent ones, repeat the cutting and pasting process. However, a crucial difference is pattern matching. Unroll your wallpaper and lay it alongside the previous strip (or hold it up to the wall) to identify where the pattern repeats. Cut your next strip ensuring the pattern aligns seamlessly with the edge of the previously hung panel. Be prepared for some excess paper waste, especially with large or intricate patterns, as this is necessary to achieve a professional, continuous look.
15. Hanging the Next Panel Seamlessly: Hang the next panel immediately adjacent to the first, carefully aligning the edges without overlapping. This is where the wallpaper size (from Step 3) proves its worth, allowing you to gently slide the paper around on the wall until the patterns perfectly match. Take your time, adjusting as needed until the pattern flows continuously across the wall.
16. Secure the Seams: After smoothing and trimming your second panel (and all subsequent panels), use a seam roller to gently press down the edges where two panels meet. This ensures a strong bond and helps to make the seams as invisible as possible. Be gentle to avoid stretching or damaging the paper.
17. Navigating Obstacles and Corners: Corners and obstacles like windows, doors, and electrical outlets require special attention. For corners, cut the wallpaper strip diagonally towards the corner, creating a straight crease. Smooth one side of the paper into the corner, then cut along the crease to fit. For outlets, switch plates, or windows, carefully cut an “X” shape over the obstacle, then trim around the edges using your utility knife. Always ensure power is off at the breaker when working near outlets.

18. Post-Installation Check and Troubleshooting: As you progress, continuously monitor previously hung panels for air bubbles that might appear as the paste begins to dry. If bubbles emerge, gently smooth them out with your paper hanging brush or plastic smoother. For stubborn bubbles, a sharp pin can be used to prick a small hole, allowing you to press out the trapped air. Wipe away any residual paste on the wallpaper surface with a clean, damp sponge, being careful not to rub too hard or damage the print.

The entire process took us nearly a full day, but the end result was absolutely stunning! And more importantly, I gained a valuable new skill and shattered a long-held DIY fear. Who knows, perhaps Robert and I will even attempt it together next time, now that I’m armed with confidence and a clear understanding of the process. It’s truly not nearly as daunting as some people make it out to be.
