Craft Your Dream Spring Wreath: A Step-by-Step Tutorial for a Romantic Sage & Blush Design
There’s a confession I need to make, one that has taken me some time to fully embrace about my personality. I’ve come to realize something about myself, and while it might sound a bit snobbish, I can’t deny it…
I am, undeniably, a wreath snob.
I know, I know. It sounds almost hypocritical coming from someone who gleefully repurposes recycled bottles or rescues forgotten pieces of furniture destined for the curb. I’ll happily fill our home with budget-friendly IKEA finds and make them look designer without a second thought. My home is a testament to resourceful decorating and a love for a good bargain.

Yet, when it comes to the welcoming adornment for our front door, my standards become surprisingly (and perhaps unreasonably) high. Store-bought wreaths rarely capture the specific aesthetic I envision, often feeling too generic or lacking that unique touch that truly reflects my style. This pickiness often leaves me searching for hours, or more often, contemplating how I can simply make my own.
The Inspiration Behind Our Latest Spring Creation
Just last week, while strolling through Michael’s, a brilliant opportunity presented itself: all their faux florals were a tempting 50% off! It was an offer I simply couldn’t refuse. My basket quickly filled with an array of bashful and blush-toned flowers. It seems pink, in its softest, most romantic shades, has become my unofficial signature color for spring this year. (Any Steel Magnolias fans out there will understand the sentiment!)
This happy accident of a shopping spree sparked the idea for our latest DIY project, and I couldn’t wait to share it with you. If you, like me, find yourself a bit particular about your front door decor, then this tutorial for a DIY spring wreath is exactly what you need. It’s designed to achieve that coveted custom look without the designer price tag.

Even if the “bashful and blush” palette isn’t quite your cup of tea, the fundamental techniques shared here can be applied to any color scheme or floral combination you prefer. For even more creative ideas, be sure to explore the wonderful inspiration shared at the end of this post from The Happy Housie’s Seasonal Simplicity Wreath Bloghop.

Essential Supplies for Your DIY Spring Wreath
Gathering the right materials is the first step to creating a beautiful and lasting wreath. Here’s what you’ll need to bring your sage and blush vision to life:
- Wire Wreath Form: I opted for a substantial 24-inch form to ensure a generous and impactful display. The wire frame provides the sturdy foundation for your design.
- Floral Wire: Indispensable for securely attaching all your greenery and flowers to the wreath form. Choose a gauge that’s strong enough to hold stems but flexible enough to manipulate.
- Floral Tape: Used in conjunction with floral wire, this tape provides extra security and helps to create a seamless, professional finish by concealing wire and binding stems.
- Floral Cutters: A good pair of sharp floral cutters is essential for cleanly snipping artificial stems. This specific kit often includes wire cutters, which are also crucial.
- Artificial Lamb’s Ear Stems: These soft, velvety grey-green leaves form the beautiful, muted base greenery of our wreath, adding a touch of rustic elegance.
- Artificial Lamb’s Ear Bush: To ensure ample coverage and fullness, using a bush provides multiple stems.
- Artificial White Berry Bush: These delicate berries add textural interest and a subtle pop of brightness against the sage greenery, mimicking the freshness of spring.
- Artificial Peony Stems: Peonies are the quintessential romantic flower, and their generous blooms add volume and a classic touch of blush.
- Artificial Dahlia Stem (similar): Dahlias offer intricate petals and rich texture, complementing the peonies beautifully.
- Artificial Ranunculus Stem: With their layered, delicate petals, ranunculus flowers bring a refined and soft elegance to the arrangement.
- Artificial Garden Rose Bush: Garden roses provide timeless beauty and a romantic fullness, essential for the blush floral accents.

The Simple Steps to Craft Your Own Spring Masterpiece
Creating this wreath is much simpler than it looks, and the satisfaction of seeing it come together is incredibly rewarding. Follow these steps to build your own stunning sage and blush spring wreath:
Step 1: Establishing Your Greenery Base with Lamb’s Ear
Begin by preparing your foundational greenery. Take your artificial lamb’s ear stems and carefully snip them into individual pieces using your floral cutters. The goal is to create a full, lush base. Start by evenly distributing these individual stems around the entire wire wreath form. Think about creating a sense of natural flow and fullness. Once positioned, securely attach each lamb’s ear stem to the wire frame using floral wire, wrapping it tightly. For extra stability and to conceal the wire, follow up with floral tape, wrapping it around the stem and the wire form. This layering approach ensures your base is robust and visually appealing.

Step 2: Adding Depth and Texture with White Berries
With your lamb’s ear base firmly in place, it’s time to introduce a secondary layer of greenery and texture. Take your artificial white berry bushes and snip them into smaller, individual stems, much like you did with the lamb’s ear. These delicate berry branches will add a lovely dimension and a touch of subtle contrast. Strategically place these stems between the lamb’s ear pieces, ensuring they are evenly distributed around the wreath form. Again, use floral wire and floral tape to securely fasten each berry stem to the frame, making sure they are nestled within the lamb’s ear to create a cohesive and organic look. This step adds a light, airy feel, mimicking natural botanical elements.

Step 3: Arranging Your Romantic Blush Blooms
Now for the most exciting part – adding your beautiful blush flowers! This is where your creative vision truly comes to life. Begin by laying out your various blush blooms (peonies, dahlias, ranunculus, garden roses) on a flat surface, envisioning their placement on the wreath. You can create clusters, distribute them evenly, or focus on a specific focal point. Once you have a general idea of where each flower will go, gently pull the stems through the wire form to the backside of the wreath. Secure each flower stem firmly with floral wire on the back, twisting the wire to ensure it won’t budge. Adjust the flowers as needed, fluffing petals and leaves to create a natural, voluminous, and balanced arrangement. Don’t be afraid to step back and assess your progress, making small tweaks until you’re delighted with the romantic aesthetic.

And just like that, in under an hour, you’ll have a stunning, custom-made spring wreath! It’s truly amazing how quickly such a beautiful piece can come together with a few simple steps and the right materials.

Welcoming Spring with Your Handmade Creation
Our freshly crafted wreath is now proudly hanging on our front door, patiently awaiting the full bloom of spring. It’s a delightful sight that instantly adds a touch of charm and anticipation to our entryway. This project was actually my very first attempt at making a wreath entirely from scratch, and I must confess, I was thoroughly surprised by how much fun it was!

While I typically gravitate towards larger-scale projects like furniture painting and home renovations, this venture into floral crafting has truly captured my interest. It’s a wonderfully therapeutic and creative outlet that yields immediate, beautiful results. Who knew that my “wreath snob” tendencies would lead me to discover such a fulfilling new hobby?

There’s just something inherently charming about the combination of sage and blush – or “bashful” as I like to call it. This delicate palette has always held a special place in my heart, evoking a sense of calm, romance, and fresh beginnings. It’s the perfect way to infuse our home with the gentle spirit of spring, creating a welcoming atmosphere for anyone who steps through our door.

Now that the wreath is handled, my next task is to sweep the front porch and give the rest of our little stoop a good spring refresh. With a beautiful handmade wreath leading the way, we’ll be officially ready to welcome the season in style!
