California Casual Powder Room Makeover: Budget-Friendly Style & DIY Shiplap Transformation
Get ready to be inspired! We’re thrilled to unveil a recent powder room transformation that perfectly captures the bright, fresh essence of California Casual style, all achieved with savvy budget finds and a simple, DIY-friendly shiplap application.
Last year, our family had the pleasure of getting to know Regan’s wonderful preschool teacher, who had recently moved from California. Her son quickly became the best of friends with our Olivia, and their bond has been a silver lining through recent challenging times. When she purchased a townhouse that needed a touch of warmth and personalization, we saw the perfect opportunity to express our gratitude.
As a special “thank you” for her incredible support, we volunteered to give her powder room a complete refresh. While she was away at school, we took over her home, armed with paint, tools, and a clear vision for a stunning yet affordable makeover. The goal? To infuse a serene, West Coast vibe into her small space, proving that elegant design doesn’t have to break the bank.

This project was particularly exciting as it coincided with a challenge from Better Homes & Gardens to refresh a space using a new-to-us decorating style. Attempting a California Casual aesthetic in this powder room felt like the ideal direction. We’re proud to announce our participation in a monthly design challenge, showcasing how to achieve designer-inspired looks on a budget using Better Homes & Gardens products available at Walmart. For long-time followers of our blog, you know that creating high-end aesthetics with a modest budget is our absolute passion!
Our aim with this series is to demystify decorating, making it accessible and enjoyable. If you missed our initial mood board vision for this space, you might be wondering what exactly “California Casual” style entails. Let’s delve into its defining characteristics:
Key Elements of California Casual Style:
- Earthy Color Palette: Think warm neutrals, soft greens, muted blues, and sandy tones that evoke nature.
- Light, Open, & Airy Spaces: Prioritizing natural light and an uncluttered feel to create a sense of calm and spaciousness.
- White/Off-White Walls: A classic foundation that brightens any room and allows other elements to shine.
- Neutral Upholstery: Sofas and chairs in linen, cotton, or other natural fabrics in neutral shades for versatility and comfort.
- Light Wood Tones: Furniture and accents crafted from light woods like oak, maple, or rattan add warmth and organic texture.
- Abundance of Plants: Greenery is essential, bringing life, color, and a connection to the outdoors.
- Handmade Pottery & Planters: Unique, artisan pieces add character and a curated, collected feel.
- Natural, Organic Materials: Woven textiles, jute, linen, leather, and stone are frequently used to create texture and depth.
- Mid-century Modern Furniture Shapes: Sleek, clean lines and functional designs provide a timeless, sophisticated edge.
- Ethnic Vintage Textiles: Rugs, pillows, and tapestries with global patterns introduce rich texture, color, and a sense of wanderlust.
This highly coveted aesthetic has graced countless high-end interior design accounts across social media, celebrated for its effortless elegance and inviting atmosphere. And now, you can achieve a similar sophisticated look with a little creativity and a lot of items from Walmart!
The Transformation Begins: Before & After

The difference is truly astonishing – it hardly looks like the same room! From its former dated appearance, this powder room has been reborn with a vibrant, modern spirit.

One of the most impactful, yet inexpensive, changes we made was installing vertical shiplap wainscoting around the entire room. This simple DIY project instantly added architectural interest and a custom feel. We then painted over the original gold walls with a crisp, clean white, creating an immediately calming and expansive atmosphere that serves as the perfect canvas for the California Casual aesthetic.

Elevating the Essentials: Vanity & Sink Area
The outdated pedestal sink was replaced with a stunning Mid-century Modern inspired vanity, which immediately anchors the space with its clean lines and sophisticated profile. This piece not only offers much-needed storage but also perfectly embodies the sleek, uncluttered aspect of California Casual design. To introduce a touch of vintage charm and rich texture, we layered this exquisite accent rug, mimicking the look of a well-loved Persian antique.

Small details make a significant impact. We incorporated subtle stoneware elements, such as this elegant reactive glaze soap dispenser, which adds an artisanal, earthy touch. Complementing these tones, these plush hand towels introduce a refined texture that harmonizes beautifully with the gray shiplap, creating a cohesive and inviting feel.

To maintain a modern, earthy vibe, we selected a few minimalist botanical art prints, framed in warm wooden frames. These pieces add a touch of nature-inspired beauty without overwhelming the compact space, reinforcing the light and airy feel. Above the vanity, a striking round gold mirror was installed. Its metallic sheen provides a chic touch of glamor and creates a beautiful contrast against the room’s black fixtures and natural elements.

Smart Storage & Decor: The Toilet Area
Moving to the other side of the powder room, this “before” image reveals the potential for a more organized and aesthetically pleasing space:
Before

Above the toilet, we installed several floating shelves, ingeniously combining practical storage with decorative display. These shelves are perfect for keeping essentials within reach while also serving as a canvas for styling with California Casual elements.

Functional yet stylish woven baskets were strategically placed to neatly store extra hand towels and toilet paper, keeping the area tidy and organized. To bring that crucial touch of green and natural vitality into the space, we added a lifelike faux aloe plant and a realistic faux Pothos plant, elegantly housed in a sleek modern white planter. These faux options offer the beauty of nature without the need for constant maintenance, perfect for a powder room.
A decorative gold orb was placed to subtly echo the gold tones of the mirror, creating visual continuity. Further enhancing the earthy palette, a beautiful reactive glaze canister and a practical sandstone organizer added additional texture and functional elegance to the shelves.

On the back of the toilet, a small stoneware tray was used to corral smaller items, providing an extra layer of organized storage. The contemporary black toilet paper holder seamlessly blends with the other black fixtures throughout the space, ensuring a cohesive design language.

And, of course, no bathroom refresh is complete without a refreshing clean-smelling candle. It’s the perfect final touch to create an inviting and pleasant ambiance for guests.

The transformation is truly incredible! Seeing the before and after, it’s clear how effective a well-planned, budget-conscious design can be. This project has further solidified my love for the “Cali Cas” aesthetic, inspiring me to incorporate even more of its effortlessly chic elements into our own home.

My Evolving Design Philosophy: From Old Hollywood to California Casual
My personal design style has certainly undergone an interesting evolution over the years. The Better Homes & Gardens challenge prompted me to reflect on how my aesthetic has shifted over the past decade. It’s hard to believe how much has changed since my college apartment days in 2010, which was an ode to a black, white, and red Old Hollywood theme. While photos of that phase are scarce, trust me when I say it was wonderfully dramatic at the time!
Fast forward to 2014, in our previous house, we embarked on a guest bathroom makeover that embraced a distinctly farmhouse-inspired look. This particular project unexpectedly went viral on Pinterest, leading to countless recreations across blogs and social media – a truly humbling experience given its humble, budget-friendly origins.

While the core of my style has remained consistent, it has certainly matured, becoming less rustic and more refined over time. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is the immense joy that comes from taking design risks. Once you realize there’s nothing to fear in trying new things, a world of creative possibilities opens up. It’s about letting go of perfectionism and embracing the journey of discovery.
Are you drawn to the serene California Casual vibe, the cozy appeal of modern farmhouse, or perhaps something beautifully in between? If you ever find yourself struggling to define your personal decorating style, an earlier post on our blog offers helpful guidance to steer you in the right direction. Remember, decorating is a personal expression, and it’s okay for your style to evolve.
The most profound lesson, however, is this: making decorating “mistakes” is an integral part of the process, a valuable step towards uncovering your authentic self and unique taste. Once you truly grasp that distinctive style of yours, a house transcends being just a structure; it transforms into a deeply personal, comforting home. Because there is truly no other place quite like it.
