Meet the Artist: Susan Miller of Miller’s Laboratory
Hello from the picturesque landscapes of west Michigan! I’m Sue Miller, the creative force behind Miller’s Laboratory, and becoming a new member of The Graphics Fairy Design Team has truly been a dream come true for me. I am beyond excited to share my creative ideas, unique artistic approaches, and passion for junk journaling with all of you over the coming year. My initial contribution, the Golden Prairie Junk Journal, embodies everything I adore about vintage aesthetics and nature’s enduring beauty.
The Golden Prairie: Inspiration and Crafting the Foundation
The theme for my inaugural junk journal, “The Golden Prairie,” emerged from a rich tapestry of inspirations. Foremost among these was the exquisite Prairie Style bundle from The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership Site, which provided a perfect foundation of imagery. I also drew heavily from the warm, nostalgic glow of late Summer and Fall sunlight, my deep-rooted love for nature, and, of course, a lifetime admiration for all things related to Laura Ingalls Wilder and her timeless stories of “Little House on the Prairie.” Further adding to this rustic charm was my cherished collection of antique school books, which often provide incredible starting points for new projects.
For the journal’s cover, I deliberately chose a 1918 Kansas reading book, immediately imbuing the piece with historical authenticity and a sense of a bygone era. To ensure durability and a cohesive aesthetic, I reinforced the spine with a rich golden fabric, complementing the journal’s warm palette. The two main signatures, or bundles of pages, were then carefully stitched into the spine using a decorative cross-stitch pattern, adding a handmade touch. The cover itself is further adorned with additional fabric and delicate lace, harmonizing with the golden tones, and finished with a scattering of tiny, antique buttons that whisper stories of the past. Measuring a comfortable 5” x 7-½”, this compact yet expansive junk journal boasts a remarkable 126 pages, offering ample space for exploration and interaction.
Preserving History: The Opening Pages
One of my signature approaches, and something I always strive to do, is to preserve the original title page from the antique books I use. This instantly connects the journal to its past life. In this particular instance, I was delighted to find and retain the name of the child who once owned this reading book, along with some of her delightful handwriting. These small, authentic details contribute immensely to the journal’s unique charm and narrative depth, inviting the viewer to ponder the history within its pages.
Adjacent to this historical anchor, I incorporated a beautiful bookplate featuring delicate birds and elegant wheat stalks, an exquisite find from The Graphics Fairy’s Autumn Song bundle. Surrounding this central image are strips of patterned paper, artfully applied to mimic the beloved look of Washi tape, adding subtle layers and texture. A particularly enchanting detail on the right-hand page is a pressed flower, locally known as Yellow Rocket – often considered a weed where I live, but here transformed into a delicate adornment. This botanical element was carefully ironed between two pieces of waxed paper to preserve its form and then delicately stitched onto the page with embroidery floss, creating a translucent, ethereal effect.
A Tapestry of Vintage Papers and Personal Touches
Throughout the Golden Prairie Junk Journal, I’ve thoughtfully incorporated a variety of vintage and antique book pages, each adding its own unique character. Old math books, with their distinct typography and sometimes cryptic calculations, hold a special place in my heart and are featured prominently. On the left, a striking color palette from The Artist bundle immediately establishes the warm and inviting color scheme for the entire journal. This cohesive visual theme is vital for a unified aesthetic.
The elegant flower image and the charming postage stamp on this spread both originate from The Graphics Fairy’s indispensable Prairie Style bundle. Taking a step further into customization, I digitally arranged a grid of this stamp image, printed it, and then meticulously perforated between each stamp to create my own authentic-looking sheet of vintage postage. These handmade stamps, a labor of love, reappear as delightful accents in various other sections of the journal. A small, evocative label from a printable sheet within the Autumn Song bundle, alongside a snippet of beautiful handwriting from a letter found in the Cows and Dairy bundle, further enrich this page with subtle narrative threads.
Interactive Delights: Pockets and Pop-Ups
For another engaging spread, I utilized an old alphabet image, discovered on The Graphics Fairy’s extensive free site, to ingeniously create three functional pockets. Within one of these inviting pockets, I tucked a miniature envelope, expertly crafted from a charming quilt pattern sourced from the Prairie Style bundle. Inside this tiny envelope reside two equally petite photographs of elegant ladies, also found on the free site, lovingly framed by pretty borders from the French Newspapers and Ephemera bundle. The remaining two pockets hold delightful Reward of Merit certificates, one from the free site and another from the Attic Paper Stash bundle, both backed with plain paper for stability and a touch of simplicity.
And now for a delightful surprise! Here, I’ve incorporated an engaging pop-up element featuring a vibrant sunflower image, once again sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s invaluable free site. This pop-up is cleverly constructed using a simple origami square base fold, demonstrating how accessible yet impactful paper engineering can be. From one of the sunflower’s existing folds, I extended the creativity by creating a secondary, smaller pop-up of a charming bee, adding an extra layer of wonder. Throughout this journal, you’ll discover numerous images of bees, cheerful yellow birds, and graceful yellow butterflies, all meticulously selected from a myriad of different bundles available on the Premium Membership site. The search function on the site makes it incredibly easy to find these glorious images – it truly feels like a kid in a candy store with so many beautiful options!
Crafting Corner Tucks and Faux Finishes
This charming corner tuck is fashioned from yet another pressed flower, identified as Cat’s Ear – another common “weed” in my locale, beautifully re-purposed into art. Like the Yellow Rocket, it was carefully ironed between two pieces of waxed paper, then hand-stitched around its delicate edges before being stitched onto the page. The inherent transparency of this pocket inspired me to design a simple yet elegant journal card to reside within it. This card was created from a coffee-dyed index card, collaged with subtle bits of vintage book pages, providing a warm, aged backdrop. For a truly authentic touch, if you look closely, you’ll notice what appears to be an old, discolored piece of Scotch tape. This illusion was achieved by printing an image of aged paper from the Blank Paper Ephemera bundle directly onto clear address labels – a clever trick for adding instant vintage character.
Celebrating Nature and Vintage Typography
Isn’t this an absolutely exquisite image featuring a meadowlark? It’s a beautifully designed, printable journal page straight from the Prairie Style bundle. Sometimes, perfection needs no embellishment; it’s truly lovely just as it is, requiring no additional work. To create a harmonious balance on the left side of the spread, I fashioned a small collage that includes a fascinating piece of a seed coupon, an unexpected yet delightful find within the Chelsea Flower Show bundle. This unexpected detail ties into the natural and agricultural themes of the prairie.
Here, I purposefully allowed the elegant page from a late 1800s arithmetic book to truly shine on the right side. Its aged paper and classic typography are, in my opinion, inherently beautiful and deserved to be a focal point. On the opposing left page, I constructed a charming small cluster that ingeniously doubles as a corner tuck. The images forming this cluster are carefully selected: a poignant excerpt from a poem titled “Ode to Hope,” discovered within the Script Ephemera bundle, and a rustic label from the Twilight on the Lake bundle. The accompanying journal card is crafted from a vintage photo back from The Photographer bundle, while the beloved black-eyed Susans, a personal favorite, were sourced from the delightful On the Farm bundle, adding a vibrant splash of golden yellow that echoes the journal’s overarching theme.
The Art of the Paper Quilt and Thematic Integration
Take a moment to admire the intricately pieced pocket on the left side of this spread. This was, in fact, the very first element I created for this entire journal, setting the tone for its rustic, homespun feel. I meticulously searched through the extensive collection on the Premium Membership site for numerous patterns that evoked the look and feel of traditional calico fabric. Once identified, I printed half sheets of these patterns onto beautiful linen texture paper, adding a tactile dimension. You’ll spot fragments of these calico papers woven throughout the journal, but for this pocket, I took it a step further: I punched out individual squares, carefully inked around their edges for an aged look, and then glued them to a backing of sturdy brown packing paper. Finally, I tied them together in the centers, effectively creating a charming paper quilt. This paper quilt was then cut into sections and strategically used in several places within the book, providing a recurring motif.
The journal card nestled within this pocket is made from a page salvaged from an old sketchbook, a fortunate find from the “free” table at my local library book sale – proving that treasures can be found anywhere! The image of the bushel basket on this card is, in my opinion, absolutely perfect for my Golden Prairie theme, embodying agricultural bounty. I’ve further embellished it with delicate yellow flowers thoughtfully selected from the versatile Prairie Style bundle. On the right, a page from an antique German primer adds another layer of historical intrigue and linguistic charm.
The Beauty of Simple, Evocative Techniques
Sometimes, the most profound charm lies in the simplest of techniques. The butterfly specimen page on the right, sourced from the enchanting Autumn Woods and Flowers bundle, is a prime example. Before adhering it permanently, I carefully used an exacto knife to precisely cut out some of the individual butterflies. These freed butterflies were then subtly glued to the facing page, creating a beautiful and whimsical illusion: it appears as though they have miraculously escaped their scientific classification and flown freely across the spread. This delicate interaction adds movement and a touch of narrative magic to the journal.
I was absolutely delighted when I stumbled upon this lovely image in The Country Lane bundle. It’s a printable folded greeting card that I chose to integrate directly as a full page within the journal, allowing its inherent beauty to speak for itself. The accompanying quote from Laura Ingalls Wilder is so remarkably appropriate to the prairie theme, resonating deeply with the journal’s spirit. Its presence here served as a wonderful inspiration, prompting me to thoughtfully weave other meaningful quotes from her throughout the entire book, enhancing its reflective and nostalgic qualities.
Layering, Local Inspiration, and the Illusion of Movement
The book page on the right comes from a cherished thrift store find: James Fenimore Cooper’s iconic work, “The Prairie.” Discovering it felt like destiny, as though it was always meant to find its place within this journal. The striking sunflower image is my very own photograph, captured during a recent visit to a local farm, adding a deeply personal touch. When first printed, its colors were perhaps a bit too vibrant for the vintage aesthetic I was aiming for. To achieve a more subdued, aged appearance, I ingeniously printed an image from the Tattered Paper Treasures 2 bundle, which features a wonderfully aged background, directly overtop my sunflower photo. This layered printing technique subtly toned down the colors, integrating it seamlessly into the journal’s vintage feel. Furthermore, the inclusion of elegant handwriting over the image significantly enhances its visual interest and narrative depth.
To truly grasp the magic of this next page, watching my video is absolutely essential! This particular spread is meticulously designed to evoke a sense of motion, brilliantly representing the iconic sight of tall grasses swaying gracefully in the wind – a quintessential prairie scene. The images of wheat, all sourced from the versatile Prairie Style bundle, were printed directly onto the underlying book page. Additionally, they were printed onto several separate sheets of paper, then carefully cut out. Each individual wheat stalk is delicately hinged onto the page with a small piece of tissue paper, artfully overlapping across the pages. These hinged images function like a captivating waterfall effect: if you lift one side, they all cascade and flip over in a beautiful, synchronized wave, truly mimicking the “amber waves of grain.” I believe this interactive design successfully captures that poetic notion, bringing the prairie landscape to life within the journal.
Belly Bands, Acetate Cards, and Layered Collage
The three charming belly bands you see here are ingeniously crafted strips from the very sheet of postage stamps I created earlier in the journal, providing a cohesive design element. The accompanying journal cards are a testament to personal artistry, featuring my own beloved sunflower photographs, which I printed onto clear acetate. After meticulously cutting out each sunflower, I used spray adhesive to bond them to some truly exquisite collage page printables. These printables were sourced from two complementary bundles: Tattered Paper Treasures and Tattered Paper Treasures 2. I absolutely adore the complex, richly layered look this technique achieves, and the simplicity of its execution makes it even more appealing. The transparency of the acetate sunflowers allows the intricate collage patterns to peek through, creating a stunning visual depth.
The Farewell Spread: Tabs, Pockets, and Homage to “The Teacher”
For the final, enchanting spread I am sharing with you in this overview, I utilized another evocative grain image from the Fall Botanicals bundle. This image was carefully folded over the right-hand page to create a prominent and functional tab, adding another interactive element. On the left side, I affixed a beautiful frame image, retrieved from the versatile Attic Paper Stash bundle, transforming it into an elegant pocket. I further embellished this pocket with a delicate white flower from the ever-useful Prairie Style bundle, enhancing its visual appeal.
Nestled within this pocket is a delightful journal card featuring a charming photo of a woman engrossed in a book, an image that harks back to simpler times, sourced from the Antique Portraits bundle. This card is further adorned with a cheerful yellow bird clutching more grains, reinforcing the prairie theme, and a sweet yellow silk ribbon bow, adding a touch of soft elegance. As a final, poignant detail, I glued a tiny snippet from one of my old school books that identifies this lady as “the teacher,” a subtle homage to education and the figures who shape our lives. This last spread beautifully encapsulates the journal’s blend of vintage charm, natural inspiration, and deeply personal touches.
