There’s a special kind of magic in discovering a hidden gem at a thrift store. That feeling of anticipation, knowing that a forgotten object holds the potential for something extraordinary, is truly exhilarating. This light-up Halloween wall decor project is a testament to that magic, proving that a modest $5 picture frame can become the centerpiece of your spooky celebrations.

Whether you’re hosting a grand Halloween party, setting a haunting scene by your front door for trick-or-treaters, or simply adding a touch of macabre charm to your home, this DIY creepy art project is perfectly suited for making a memorable statement. It’s an accessible craft that allows you to infuse your personal style into your seasonal decorations, moving beyond generic store-bought items.

This project began exactly as many of my favorite creative endeavors do: with an unexpected find. Over the summer, I stumbled upon a beautifully ornate vintage picture frame at Goodwill. Its intricate details and grand size instantly caught my eye, and for just $5, I knew it had to come home with me, even if its ultimate purpose remained a mystery at the time. It’s one of those essential thrift store items I always look for, knowing its potential for transformation.

The inspiration for this particular piece struck me as I reminisced about childhood trips to Disney’s Haunted Mansion. I vividly recall the eerie, glowing portraits that seemed to follow you with their eyes, creating a wonderfully unsettling atmosphere. That memory sparked the idea to replicate that classic macabre charm, but with a DIY twist: a spooky portrait featuring striking, blood-red glowing eyes, perfect for creating truly unique Halloween wall decor. The thought alone sends a delightful shiver down my spine!

Craft Your Own Hauntingly Beautiful DIY Creepy Halloween Art with Glowing Eyes

Creating this captivating piece of light-up Halloween decor is simpler than you might imagine. It combines the thrill of thrifting with a few clever craft techniques to produce an effect that’s both eerie and elegant. Here’s everything you’ll need to bring your spooky vision to life.

Essential Supplies for Your Glowing Art Project

  • Picture Frame: The heart of your project! Scour local thrift stores for a vintage or ornate frame. Don’t be constrained by size; any frame with character will work beautifully. My 20×24 inch find for just $5 was perfect for a dramatic statement. Consider the style – ornate gold frames often enhance the macabre effect.
  • Old Portrait Painting Print: To achieve that classic, haunted look, an antique-style portrait is key. You can use our exclusive free printable below or find one online. Print it on blueprint or poster paper for a substantial feel. I recommend a local print shop like Office Depot for same-day services, typically costing around $20 for a large print. The larger the print, the more impactful your final piece will be.
  • Black Foam Poster Board: This will serve as the rigid backing for your art print and help prevent any light from showing through where it shouldn’t. If your print fully covers the frame’s backing, a sturdy scrap piece of cardboard could also work. However, the black color is ideal for concealing edges, especially if your print doesn’t perfectly fit.
  • Spray Adhesive: Essential for securely attaching your art print to the foam board, ensuring a smooth, wrinkle-free finish. Look for a strong, permanent bond adhesive.
  • Utility Knife: A sharp utility knife is crucial for precise cuts, particularly when resizing the foam board and creating the small, intricate eye holes. Always use a cutting mat or scrap cardboard underneath to protect your work surface.
  • Matte Mod Podge: This versatile crafting medium will add a protective layer to your art print and, more importantly, create a textured, brushstroke-like finish, mimicking a genuine painted canvas. Matte finish is preferred for an aged, non-reflective look.
  • Chip Brush: An inexpensive chip brush is perfect for applying Mod Podge. Its slightly coarse bristles help create the desired textured effect.
  • Masking or Painter’s Tape: This will be used to secure the foam board within the frame and, more critically, to hold the battery lights in place behind the eye holes. Duct tape is a strong alternative if you have it on hand.
  • Red Battery Lights: These are the star of the show! Small, battery-operated LED lights with a red glow are perfect for creating that eerie, glowing eye effect. Ensure they are small enough to fit within the eye holes you’ll cut. Fairy lights or miniature string lights work best.
  • Command Hanging Strips: Ideal for safely and temporarily hanging your finished art without damaging walls. Make sure to choose strips appropriate for the weight of your frame.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Light-Up Halloween Art

Follow these detailed steps to transform your thrifted frame and art print into a stunning piece of creepy Halloween decor.

Step 1 – Prepare and Adhere Your Art Print to the Foam Board

Begin by ensuring your foam board is the correct size to fit snugly into your picture frame. If it’s too large, use your utility knife to carefully trim it down. Always place a scrap piece of cardboard or newspaper underneath to protect your work surface during this cutting process. The goal is a firm, stable backing that will support your art and lights.

To provide a rigid, flat backing for your art print within the frame, spray an even layer of adhesive onto the foam board. Make sure to apply it evenly to prevent bubbles or uneven adhesion. If you’re using a portrait that doesn’t completely fill the frame, opt for a black foam board. This will ensure that any visible edges through the frame appear dark and seamless, rather than exposing a lighter, less aesthetic backing. Carefully position your paper art print onto the adhesive-coated foam board, starting from one edge and smoothly pressing it down to remove any air bubbles. Take your time to get it perfectly aligned. Allow the adhesive to dry completely for at least 15 minutes, or according to the product instructions, before moving to the next step. Patience here will prevent wrinkles and ensure a professional finish.

Step 2 – Precisely Cut Small Eye Holes for the Glowing Effect

This is where your art truly comes to life! Before cutting, place a sacrificial piece of cardboard beneath your art print to protect your table. Carefully examine your art print and identify the exact center of each eye. Using the size of your battery light bulbs as a guide, use your utility knife to cut a small, neat hole in each eye. The key here is precision – you want the holes to be just large enough to comfortably insert the individual LED bulbs, but not so large that they are noticeable when the lights are off. A clean cut will ensure a crisp, focused glow. Work slowly and deliberately to avoid tearing the paper or making the holes too big.

Step 3 – Apply Mod Podge for a Distinctive Brush Stroke Effect and Protection

Once the spray adhesive is completely dry (this is critical!), it’s time to add character and protection with Mod Podge. Dip your chip brush into the matte Mod Podge and apply a generous, yet even, coat over the entire surface of your art print. Use a haphazard, slightly irregular motion with the brush to create visible brush strokes. As the Mod Podge dries, these strokes will settle, leaving a beautiful textured finish that convincingly mimics the look of an authentic oil painting on canvas. This step not only enhances the vintage feel but also protects your print.

A word of caution from my own experience: I initially made the mistake of not allowing the spray adhesive to fully cure before applying the Mod Podge. This oversight caused some slight wrinkling in my art print. However, I quickly realized that this wasn’t a flaw but rather an enhancement! The subtle imperfections only added to the distressed, aged aesthetic, perfectly complementing the haunted, creepy vibe of the portrait. So, if a few wrinkles appear, embrace them – they only add to the macabre charm your art will exude!

Step 4 – Securely Tape the Art Board into Your Picture Frame

Once your Mod Podge is completely dry and the textured effect is set, carefully place the foam board with your art print into the picture frame. If your vintage frame comes with existing clips or a traditional backing, you might simply use those to secure the art. However, many thrifted frames, like mine, often come without these components, requiring a simple DIY solution. In such cases, use masking tape, painter’s tape, or even duct tape to firmly attach the foam board to the inside edges of the frame. Apply tape along all four edges on the backside of the frame, ensuring the art is centered and held securely without any wobble. This step creates a stable foundation for the lights.

Step 5 – Strategically Tape Lights Behind the Art for a Dramatic Glow

Now for the truly magical part! Take your red battery lights and carefully insert one individual LED bulb into each of the eye holes you cut in Step 2. From the backside of the frame, ensure the bulb is positioned directly behind the eye and then use small pieces of tape to secure the wire and bulb in place. You want the light to be flush with the hole for the most impactful glow. Once the individual lights are positioned, gather the remaining wire and the battery pack. Neatly tape the battery pack to the back of the frame, making sure the on/off switch remains easily accessible. This allows you to effortlessly turn your creepy Halloween art on and off, controlling its spooky presence with a flick of a switch.

Step 6 – Hang Your Masterpiece with Command Strips

For a temporary and damage-free hanging solution, Command hanging strips are your best friend. They are ideal for seasonal decor, allowing you to display your creepy Halloween art without commitment. Carefully follow the instructions on the Command strip package for optimal adhesion and holding power. A general best practice involves pressing the Velcro strips firmly onto both the frame and the wall for at least 30 seconds each. Then, allow the adhesive to “set up” for a full hour before hanging the picture frame. This crucial waiting period ensures a strong bond, preventing your spooky masterpiece from making an unexpected descent. Choose a prominent spot in your entryway, living room, or even a covered porch to maximize its haunting impact!

The Finished DIY Creepy Halloween Wall Decor: A Hauntingly Good Reveal

Witnessing this Halloween art come to life was truly thrilling! The transformation from a simple thrift store frame and a printed portrait to a genuinely creepy, light-up masterpiece is nothing short of amazing. The glowing red eyes add an incredibly spooky dimension, making it a standout piece of macabre wall decor. It’s exactly the kind of unique, budget-friendly Halloween decoration that makes the season so much fun.

By the way, have you recognized the subject of this painting yet? Here’s a little hint: he’s famously known for his distinctive self-portraits, a rather unfortunate incident involving an ear, and another iconic “glowing” starry art piece. My daughters, Regan and Olivia, have affectionately named him “Vinny.” They confidently wave, “Hi, Vinny!” every time they pass by, completely unfazed by his intense gaze. He’s just scary enough with those glowing eyes to fit the Halloween theme, yet without the red glow, he transforms back into a regular, albeit historically significant, gentleman hanging on the wall. This versatility means you can control the level of spookiness in your home.

Beyond being a fantastic indoor decoration, this piece of DIY light-up creepy Halloween art would make an incredible statement as front door decor on Halloween night, greeting trick-or-treaters with a mysterious glow. It’s also perfect for setting the scene at a Halloween party, creating an instant focal point that guests will talk about. The ability to switch the lights on and off offers flexibility, allowing you to adapt the ambiance to any occasion.

Now that this light-up Halloween art craft is complete, my next adventure involves whipping up some exquisite table decor in the breakfast nook. The goal is to complement this spooky portrait perfectly, setting the stage for a delightful Halloween dinner party with my girls. This year, I’ve truly embraced the world of DIY Halloween crafts more than ever before, and I must confess, I’m having an absolute blast! Is there such a thing as too much fun when it comes to decorating for the holidays? I certainly don’t think so!

And the beauty of a project like this is its reusability. Once Halloween has passed and the ghosts have retreated, this versatile picture frame won’t be relegated to storage. I’m already envisioning its next transformation: perhaps into a festive piece of Christmas art? The possibilities are endless when you approach decor with a creative, thrifty mindset. What do you think—ready for a holiday repurpose?
