The Ultimate Guide to Decluttering and Organizing Your Bathroom Drawers and Cabinets
Life can throw unexpected curveballs, making daily routines feel overwhelming. There are weeks when everything seems to go wrong – failed projects, sleepless nights, endless rain putting a halt to your plans. In such moments, the thought of tackling a daunting organization project might seem impossible. However, sometimes, immersing yourself in a task you’ve been putting off can be surprisingly therapeutic. That’s exactly how I felt when I finally decided to conquer the chaotic clutter hidden within our master bathroom vanity.
Our bathroom, once a picture of disarray, had been the recipient of some recent exterior updates. We had just finished a master bathroom refresh, including a fresh coat of paint on the vanity, making it beautiful on the outside. But like many homes, its true secret lay behind closed doors: a messy, overflowing vanity. It’s amazing how quickly things can accumulate, especially after a major life event like welcoming a new baby. What started as a few items soon multiplied into an overwhelming mess, making it nearly impossible to find anything.

Confession time: our bathroom vanity was an embarrassing explosion of items. Every drawer and cabinet was stuffed to the brim, a testament to months, if not years, of neglect. Hair tools tangled, makeup scattered, and half-empty bottles creating a sticky residue. It was a disaster zone that made getting ready in the morning a frustrating scavenger hunt. But there’s no judgment here, right? We all have those hidden spots that accumulate clutter over time.

The good news is, transforming a chaotic bathroom vanity into a calm, functional oasis is entirely achievable. With a systematic approach and the right tools, you can create a space that makes your daily routine smoother and more enjoyable. If you’re ready to reclaim your bathroom and bring order to your drawers and cabinets, follow these essential steps. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes!
Why Bathroom Vanity Organization Matters for Your Daily Life
An organized bathroom vanity isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about functionality, hygiene, and mental well-being. Imagine starting your day without rummaging through endless clutter, finding exactly what you need in seconds. This saves precious time, reduces stress, and fosters a sense of calm. When your beauty products, toiletries, and hair tools have a designated spot, your routine becomes effortless, and your mornings become more enjoyable. Furthermore, a tidy space is easier to clean, promoting better hygiene and preventing the buildup of grime and expired products.
Beyond the practical benefits, decluttering creates a sense of accomplishment and control. In a world that often feels chaotic, having one area of your home perfectly organized can bring a surprising amount of peace. It reflects a mindful approach to your living space, allowing you to appreciate the items you truly use and love, while letting go of the rest. Our master bathroom vanity was overdue for this transformation, and yours might be too!

Your Step-by-Step Guide to a Beautifully Organized Bathroom Vanity
Transforming your bathroom vanity from a disaster zone to a sanctuary requires a strategic approach. Follow these must-do steps to ensure a thorough and lasting organization:
1. Empty Everything Out – Seriously, EVERYTHING!
This first step is crucial and non-negotiable. Do not try to organize around items or just remove what you think you want to toss. The key to a truly effective declutter is to start with a completely blank slate. Pull every single item out of your bathroom drawers and cabinets. Spread every bottle, brush, styling tool, and spare toiletry onto your countertop, the floor, or even a temporary table. This might seem overwhelming at first, but it allows you to see the full scope of what you own and truly understand the space you have available. It’s an essential first look at the magnitude of your “collection” and helps prevent simply reorganizing clutter.
2. Sort, Declutter, and Purge Ruthlessly
With everything out in the open, it’s time for the most impactful step: sorting and decluttering. Create three distinct piles: “Keep,” “Toss,” and “Relocate.”
- Toss Pile: Be brutal here. Throw away anything you haven’t used in at least six months. If it’s makeup, check expiration dates; most products expire faster than you think. Toss empty bottles, dried-up nail polishes, old samples, and anything that’s broken or no longer serves a purpose. Don’t let guilt over money spent prevent you from letting go of items you don’t use or need.
- Relocate Pile: Many items end up in the bathroom simply because it’s convenient, but they truly belong elsewhere. Medications might need to go to a cooler, darker place, extra linens to a linen closet, or certain cleaning supplies to a utility closet.
- Keep Pile: These are the items you regularly use, love, and truly need. Group similar items together during this stage (e.g., all hair products, all skincare, all dental care). This pre-sorting will make the next steps much easier.

3. Deep Clean Your Drawers and Cabinets
Once empty, your vanity interior will likely reveal dust, hair, spilled makeup, and general grime. This is your chance to give it a proper deep clean. Use your handheld vacuum to quickly remove loose debris, hair, and dust bunnies. Then, grab an all-purpose cleaner and a cloth to thoroughly wipe down all surfaces – the bottoms, sides, and even the drawer glides. This step ensures you’re putting your organized items back into a fresh, hygienic space. Don’t skip it; a clean foundation is essential for a truly organized system.
4. Line Drawers and Cabinets with Fresh Contact Paper
This step might seem optional, but it makes a huge difference in both aesthetics and practicality. We discovered old, worn-out contact paper from decades ago in our vanity, highlighting the need for a refresh. Remove any existing liners, clean thoroughly, and then cut and place new contact paper. We chose this clean, white wood grain contact paper, which instantly brightened the space and provided a fresh, clean look. Liner paper protects the cabinet and drawer bases from spills and wear, makes cleaning easier in the future, and adds a polished, cohesive touch to your newly organized space. It’s a small detail that has a big impact.

The transformation is truly remarkable. Just look at the difference a clean liner makes!

5. Optimize Cabinet Space with Vertical Storage
Under-sink cabinets often become a dumping ground due to their depth and lack of internal structure. Maximizing vertical space is key here. For our cabinets, I found these ingenious wire stackable basket drawers. These allow you to store items efficiently without creating new piles. They are perfect for organizing taller items like hair styling tools (hair dryers, curling irons, straighteners), extra toiletries, or cleaning supplies. By creating layers, you prevent items from getting lost at the back of the cabinet and make everything easily accessible. Measure your cabinet space before purchasing to ensure a perfect fit!
6. Implement Drawer Organizers for Every Item
This is where everything truly gets its “home.” Once you’ve sorted your “keep” items into categories, it’s time to choose the right drawer organizers. I opted for a set of clear drawer organizers from Amazon, as their transparency makes it easy to see contents and their modular design allows for customization. However, you don’t need to break the bank; small baskets from a dollar store or repurposed containers can work just as well. The goal is to create compartments for different categories of items. Dedicate a specific section for makeup, another for dental care, one for hair accessories, and so on. This prevents items from rolling around and ensures that every single thing has its designated spot, making it simple to find and put away.
The Beautifully Organized Bathroom Vanity: After the Transformation
With all the steps completed, our bathroom vanity has been utterly transformed. It’s now a calm, functional space that makes getting ready a joy instead of a chore. Here’s a peek at how everything came together:
My side of the vanity is now a testament to efficient storage. All my daily essentials are within easy reach, beautifully compartmentalized.

My hair dryer, curling irons, and straightener are neatly nestled in their own sections within the stacked drawers, alongside my makeup and manicure bags. No more tangled cords or digging through piles!

Robert, with his (thankfully) fewer grooming items, now has a perfectly clear space. We utilized his side to neatly store essential bathroom cleaning supplies, keeping them out of sight but readily accessible.

The top drawer now serves as a shared hub, housing common items like toothpaste, dental floss, and other necessities that both of us use daily.

The next drawer down is exclusively mine, dedicated to all my hair care and skincare products. Everything has its own section, making my morning routine much more efficient.

Robert’s personal drawer below holds all his shaving supplies and other grooming essentials, keeping them tidy and accessible for him.

Finally, the bottom drawer is reserved for extra supplies and our travel toiletry bags. Now, packing for a trip is as simple as grabbing a pre-packed bag – no last-minute scrambling required.

This comprehensive organization has truly made our bathroom feel like a breath of fresh air. Getting ready is significantly faster and stress-free because everything is easy to find and put away.

Maintaining Your Pristine Bathroom Organization
The key to long-lasting organization is establishing simple habits to maintain your newly tidy space. After all the effort you’ve put in, you want it to stay this way!
- A Place for Everything: The golden rule of organization. Make sure every item has a designated home. When you’re done using something, put it back immediately.
- Daily Tidy-Up: Take a few minutes each day to wipe down counters and quickly put away any items that have migrated out of their spots.
- Weekly Quick Check: Do a slightly deeper scan once a week. Are there any new items that need to be incorporated into the system? Are any expired products lingering?
- Seasonal Declutter: Every few months, or perhaps during your spring cleaning, do a mini-declutter. Remove any items that are no longer used or have expired, just like you did in Step 2. This prevents accumulation.
- One In, One Out Rule: When you buy a new product, consider if an old one needs to be discarded. This helps prevent your collection from growing out of control again.
Now that this major project is behind me, I’m thrilled to finally have this bathroom 100% finished, especially once the wall decor is up this weekend! It’s an incredibly satisfying feeling to see a project through to completion and enjoy the tangible results of your hard work.
