French Provincial Elegance Renewed

The steady rhythm of rain has become an all-too-familiar soundtrack lately, marking over twenty soggy days in the past month. While such weather often inspires a flurry of planning – lists, calendar goals, pinned ideas, and overflowing virtual shopping carts – it frequently translates into a distinct lack of tangible accomplishment. My laundry basket, for instance, recently held nothing but pajamas and yoga pants, a testament to a certain #productivityfail.

However, amidst the gloomy skies, a shining beacon of productivity emerged in my life this week: a stunning French Provincial china cabinet makeover that brought much-needed cheer and a fresh new look to our dining room.

This delightful project serendipitously aligned perfectly with our “Trash to Treasure Tuesday” series, proving that even a month-long monsoon can’t stop a determined DIYer from turning an overlooked piece into a focal point. This particular furniture makeover tackled a long-standing issue in our dining area and delivered a much-desired blend of style and practicality.

Addressing a Dining Room Dilemma: The Search for the Perfect China Cabinet

If you caught a glimpse of our recent house tour, you might have already seen a snippet of the journey this cabinet took. For several months, Robert and I had been contemplating a change in our dining room. After moving in our previous buffet, it became clear that its dimensions were simply not working for the space. We often learn lessons the hard way, and while I truly appreciated the look of our old buffet, its depth, exceeding two feet, made our dining room feel incredibly cramped and congested.

With Thanksgiving rapidly approaching and a guest list of over twenty people for dinner in just a few weeks, we knew it was time for action. The decision was made: the massive buffet had to go, and we needed to find a more appropriately sized replacement that would open up the room without sacrificing storage or style. This pressing need set the stage for our French Provincial china cabinet adventure, aiming for a solution that was both beautiful and functional for our dining area refresh.

A Flea Market Treasure: The French Provincial Find

As fate would have it, a serendipitous visit to a flea market last weekend led me straight to this exquisite French Provincial china cabinet. It wasn’t just beautiful; it boasted the absolute perfect measurements for our dining room – a critical factor given our previous experience. What made the find even more remarkable was that I managed to purchase it for the exact same price I sold the old buffet for: a mere $250. It truly felt like destiny, a clear sign that this vintage piece was meant to become the centerpiece of our refreshed dining space.

Initially, I considered preserving the wood’s natural charm, perhaps by stripping away the existing orange-toned stain and aiming for a weathered wood finish. However, as I’ve mentioned before, I have a strong aversion to the messy process of wood stripping. Coupled with the relentless, month-long monsoon that rendered outdoor work impossible and the tight timeline for Thanksgiving, painting quickly became the most practical and appealing option. This decision allowed for a quick yet impactful DIY furniture makeover, transforming the cabinet efficiently despite the challenging weather conditions.

The Transformation Process: Painting with Precision and Ease

Step 1: Preparation is Key

To kick off this furniture makeover, I reached for my trusty Fusion Mineral Paint in the color Ash, a shade I still had plenty of leftover from our foyer table transformation. Before applying any paint, proper preparation is paramount. I gave the entire cabinet a thorough rub-down with deglosser. This crucial step ensures the removal of any lingering dust, grime, or wood oils, providing a perfectly clean and receptive surface for the paint. Many “no-prep” paints claim you can skip this, but in my experience, a deglosser is always key for optimal adhesion and a long-lasting finish, even with advanced paints like Fusion Mineral Paint.

Step 2: Painting with Fusion Mineral Paint

Fusion Mineral Paint has quickly become my preferred choice for DIY furniture projects. Unlike traditional chalk paint, it doesn’t require a separate wax or topcoat to seal the finish, making it a true “one-and-done” solution that saves both time and effort. Plus, it tends to be more budget-friendly than many chalk paint brands, which is always a bonus for any home decor enthusiast. For this French Provincial china cabinet makeover, a single coat of Fusion Mineral Paint was all it took. The paint dried completely within an hour, and its self-leveling properties meant that none of my brush strokes were visible, leaving a beautifully smooth and professional-looking finish. The ease of application and quick drying time were a godsend, especially given the continuous rainy weather preventing outdoor work.

Step 3: Subtle Distressing and Hardware Integration

After the paint had thoroughly dried, I gave the entire piece a quick, light sanding using a medium grit sanding block. The goal was to achieve a subtle distressed look, allowing hints of the original wood to peek through, adding character and depth to the finish. It’s always remarkable how a simple sanding step can completely transform the appearance of painted furniture, creating an aged, vintage feel. For the hardware, I opted to keep the original pieces. Their existing finish perfectly complemented the nailhead trim on our dining chairs, ensuring a cohesive and integrated look within the dining room decor.

Step 4: The Inner Glow with Sterling

For the interior of the china cabinet’s hutch, I chose another beautiful shade from Fusion Mineral Paint: Sterling. This color features a lovely, slightly cool gray tint, which provides a gentle contrast to the exterior Ash, making any displayed items truly pop. Once the paint was fully dry, the real fun began: filling the cabinet. I proudly loaded it up with my grandmother’s silver, pieces that had been tucked away for decades. Thanksgiving always brings fond memories of her, and I loved the idea of bringing her cherished items out, polishing them up, and displaying them just in time for the holiday season. I know she would have been absolutely delighted and “tickled” to see them showcased so beautifully in our home.

Timeless Styling and Renewed Space

On a practical note, if you’re planning your wedding registry, take it from me and my mother’s excellent advice: go with a plain white china set! I use mine constantly. It’s incredibly versatile and utterly timeless, a truly sound investment that has proven its worth over the past five years. (My inner teenager might resist admitting my mom was right, but here we are!) The clean lines of the white china provide a perfect counterpoint to the newly transformed French Provincial cabinet.

Isn’t the cabinet just charming now? I confess, I typically gravitate towards furniture with clean, modern lines, often shying away from ornate or curvy details. However, this French Provincial piece, with its elegant curves and refreshed finish, completely won me over. It adds a touch of classic sophistication without overwhelming the space, blending beautifully with our evolving home decor style.

Perhaps the most significant benefit of this DIY furniture makeover is the newfound spaciousness in our dining room. The china cabinet is literally half the depth of the buffet it replaced, which means we now have significantly more room to move around, making the area feel open, airy, and far more inviting. This small dining room solution has dramatically improved the flow, especially with a large family gathering just around the corner.

Ongoing & Future Home Projects

You might notice the window on the left side of the room – yes, we framed it ourselves! I’ll be sharing a more in-depth look at this project soon on Remodelaholic. Essentially, we gave it the classic DIY window trim treatment, similar to the method we used in Olivia’s bedroom makeover. It’s amazing how much a simple detail like proper window trim can enhance a room’s character and create a more finished, custom look.

Our dining room transformation journey is far from over. I’m still envisioning a beautiful rug to anchor the space under our table (because who thought carpet in a dining room was a good idea?). I also plan to give our round dining table a new finish, and perhaps even add some board and batten or a shiplap wall to further enhance the room’s character. These projects are on our ever-growing to-do list, and we’re committed to tackling them one step at a time, continually refining our home’s aesthetic.

Here’s a glimpse of what we started with when we first moved into this house in December 2013, a stark contrast to its current state:

This room has truly undergone a remarkable journey, evolving from its initial state to a space that now reflects our style and meets our family’s needs. It’s a testament to the power of thrifty finds, a little imagination, and the satisfaction that comes from dedicated DIY projects. Each furniture makeover and small home improvement brings us closer to our vision of a beautiful, comfortable, and functional home.

Even as I captured these final photos of our updated dining room, it was still pouring outside. A lot of sweet-talking to my camera and careful lighting adjustments were needed to get these shots! But the effort was well worth it to showcase this beautiful transformation.
