Hello everyone, my name is Emily Oliver, and you can find my creative work at @pinkpaper44. I am thrilled to share my second journal creation as part of The Graphics Fairy design team. For this particular month, my heart was set on crafting a journal that truly embodied the essence of autumn. However, with summer still lingering in the air, I decided to blend the best of both seasons. The result is a unique specimen junk journal, a harmonious fusion of natural elements including vibrant flowers, enchanting mushrooms, and graceful birds. It’s a perfect transitional piece, capturing the magic of both late summer and early fall. This distinctive journal is currently available for purchase in my Etsy shop, ready to find its new home.
The journey of creating this journal began with a fortunate discovery in my personal stash of vintage treasures: an old receipt/coupon organizer. Its dimensions were absolutely perfect for serving as the foundational cover for my autumn-themed journal. To bring a touch of whimsy and enchantment to the front, I engaged in a delightful process of forest fairy collaging, carefully layering various elements to create a magical woodland scene. Throughout this, I interspersed charming labels, adding both visual interest and a sense of discovery. No journal of this nature would be complete without a whimsical accent, so I couldn’t resist attaching a delicate mushroom dangle to the spine. This small, yet significant detail provides that exquisite finished touch, inviting curiosity and hinting at the wonders within. The finished journal measures a comfortable 7 inches long, 5 inches wide, and boasts a substantial 2-inch thickness, promising ample space for journaling and exploration.
Turning to the first page, you’ll find a resourceful creation born from a humble junk mail envelope. With a little imagination and some clever folding, I transformed it into a dynamic page featuring two distinct pockets. One pocket ingeniously flips down, adding an interactive element, while the larger, more prominent pocket showcases a charming window, offering a glimpse into its contents. To complement this, I crafted a generously sized tag, perfectly designed to nestle within the window pocket. This tag itself is a small work of art, created by collaging with soft brown tissue paper and layering beautiful vintage images, giving it a rich, textural depth and an inviting aesthetic. This thoughtful design not only adds functionality but also enhances the visual narrative of the Autumn Flora Junk Journal, encouraging discovery on every turn.
My creative toolkit includes a versatile file folder die, which proved invaluable for cutting out the foundations of these charming specimen file folder pockets. Once cut, I embarked on a collage process for the front of each, carefully selecting various mushroom and other nature-inspired images from The Graphics Fairy’s extensive collection. This meticulous layering created a distinctive, vintage-style specimen aesthetic that perfectly complements the journal’s theme. These beautifully adorned pockets are then thoughtfully filled with an array of coordinating tags and other delightful ephemera, each piece adding to the overall narrative and inviting further exploration. The intent behind these pockets is to offer dedicated spaces for collecting and categorizing small treasures, truly embodying the spirit of a naturalist’s field guide within the pages of this Autumn Flora Junk Journal.
This Autumn Flora Junk Journal is thoughtfully designed with an abundance of interactive elements, featuring numerous tuck spots and inviting pockets, each meticulously filled with curated ephemera and beautifully crafted tags. These hidden treasures are waiting to be discovered, adding layers of surprise and engagement to the journaling experience. For many of the tags throughout the journal, I employed a creative digital collaging technique. I carefully selected a variety of stunning vintage images from The Graphics Fairy’s expansive library, digitally arranged them into cohesive compositions, and then printed them out. This method allowed for precise control over the aesthetic, ensuring each tag contributes perfectly to the overarching botanical and autumnal theme, enriching the narrative of this unique handmade journal.
One of the most exciting and distinctive features of this Autumn Flora Junk Journal is the specimen box, an idea I’ve eagerly wanted to bring to life for quite some time, heavily inspired by the ingenious work of Nick the Booksmith. The creation process began with crafting a robust large outer box, which then housed several smaller, perfectly fitted boxes within. Inside these compartments, I’ve carefully arranged a collection of extra labels and a selection of fascinating natural specimens: miniature pinecones, a delicate feather, and fragrant dried lavender. This specimen box transforms the journal into a personal curio cabinet, a portable collection of natural wonders. Imagine the possibilities for using this feature – it would be absolutely perfect for a field trip, allowing you to gather and categorize your own small specimens, creating a truly personalized botanical record. The hands-on experience of collecting and preserving these elements enhances the connection to nature and adds an immersive dimension to the junk journaling hobby. I am so pleased with how this unique element turned out and can wholeheartedly say that I will undoubtedly be creating many more specimen boxes like this in my future projects, as it perfectly blends art, nature, and storytelling within the pages of a journal.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read through this detailed post! I genuinely hope you enjoyed discovering the intricacies of this Autumn Flora Junk Journal and found a wealth of inspiration for your own creative endeavors. May it encourage you to explore the beauty of vintage images and the joy of handmade art.
