DIY Dream Playroom: Seamless Built-In Bookshelves

Transform Your Space: A Step-by-Step Guide to Building Custom-Look Built-In Bookcases Using IKEA Billy Bookcases

There’s a special kind of exhilaration that comes with nearing the finish line of a major home project. For Robert and me, our playroom makeover marathon has us practically tasting victory. Our muscles might be a little sore, and our brains a bit foggy from all the planning and execution, but the vision of a beautifully transformed space keeps us pushing forward. (And by “marathon,” I mean the kind where you meticulously plan every step from the comfort of your living room, not the actual running kind. If you ever see me voluntarily running, please assume I’m being chased and join in!)

Just a few weeks ago, I invited you on a grand tour of our very yellow playroom, sharing all my ambitious design plans for this space. My goal was simple yet profound: to create an area that was not only incredibly charming but also exceptionally functional. Storage, organization, and a touch of whimsy were at the top of my list.

The transformation began with a fresh coat of paint. We bid farewell to the dated yellow walls, embracing the serene elegance of Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee. The beige trim received a sophisticated upgrade with Benjamin Moore Simply White, while the doors were dramatically reimagined in Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron. These carefully chosen neutrals not only provided a cohesive flow from our living room but also introduced a striking contrast that instantly elevated the room’s aesthetic.

However, true functionality in a playroom demands robust storage solutions. Our vision called for something more than just standalone shelving; we needed integrated, custom-looking built-in bookcases. And with a bit of elbow grease and a clever IKEA hack, voilà! Here’s a sneak peek at our progress so far, showcasing how we’re turning a simple idea into a stunning reality.

Achieving Custom Built-In Bookcases with Ready-Made Furniture

To truly get a sense of the room’s potential, I’ve temporarily laid down our vibrant rug and leaned our DIY Storybook Art against the new built-ins. Even in this preliminary stage, it’s clear this playroom is going to be absolutely adorable! Having previously tackled large-scale DIY bookcase built-ins using IKEA Billy bookcases in the playroom of our previous home, we knew this approach was a winner. This time, we opted for a similar but slightly smaller concept, perfectly scaled for Olivia to easily sort her toys and for us to master toy organization once and for all. This method offers the best of both worlds: the affordability and ease of IKEA furniture combined with the seamless, integrated look of custom cabinetry.

Essential Supplies for Your IKEA Billy Built-In Bookcase Project

  • 4 short IKEA Billy bookcases (check for sales at IKEA for the best deals!)
  • 1 – 1″x12″x12′ board (Choose poplar for a smooth paint finish, pine for a rustic touch with visible grain, or oak for durability and a premium look. We opted for a nice pine with minimal knots for character.)
  • 3 – 1″x2″x8′ boards (Match the species of your 1″x12″ for consistency in staining or painting.)
  • 4 – 1″x2″x8′ common boards (These will be primarily painted, so pine is a cost-effective choice.)
  • 6 – 1″ square dowels (Essential for bridging gaps and providing stability.)
  • 1 1/4″ wood screws (For securely joining bookcase units.)
  • Power drill/driver (An indispensable tool for assembly and fastening.)
  • 1 1/4″ finishing nails (For attaching trim pieces with minimal visibility.)
  • Jigsaw (Crucial for making intricate cuts around obstacles like baseboards.)
  • Circular saw (For straight, efficient cuts on larger boards.)
  • Tape measure and pencil (For precise measurements and markings.)
  • Liquid Nails (Provides extra adhesion between wood components.)
  • Hammer (For driving finishing nails if you don’t have a nail gun.)
  • Square tool (Ensures perfect 90-degree angles for cuts and alignments.)
  • Caulk (The secret weapon for hiding imperfections and creating seamless joints.)
  • Caulk tool (For smooth, even caulk beads.)
  • Stain of your choice (We chose Minwax Special Walnut for its rich tone that complements our hardwood floors.)
  • Stain brush & clean, dry rags (For applying and wiping stain.)
  • Kilz Adhesion Primer (Essential for ensuring paint adheres well to IKEA’s laminate surface.)
  • Paint of your choice (We used Sherwin Williams Tree Swallow in a satin finish. For durability and a smooth professional look, I highly recommend a high-quality interior water-based acrylic-alkyd paint like ProClassic.)
  • Angled paint brush (For cutting in and detailed work.)
  • Minwax Polycrylic (For protecting stained surfaces and enhancing durability.)

Excluding tools we already owned, the total cost for wood, bookcases, stain, caulk, polycrylic, and paint came to an impressive $304.43. This demonstrates the incredible value of this IKEA hack for achieving a high-end look on a budget.

Step 1 – Assemble Your IKEA Billy Bookcases

Our journey began by meticulously following the IKEA instructions to assemble all four Billy bookcases. We were lucky enough to snag them for just $39 each during IKEA’s winter sale – always keep an eye out for those deals! A crucial decision we made at this stage was to omit the flimsy cardboard backing that typically comes with these units. This not only allowed us to maintain easy access to our wall outlets but also created a more substantial, integrated feel that truly mimics custom built-ins.

When assembling, ensure all joints are tight and components are properly aligned. A little care here will go a long way in the overall stability and appearance of your finished built-ins. Double-check that your bookcases are square before moving to the next step.

Step 2 – Attach a Square Dowel to the Back of Each Bookcase

Since we chose to forgo the standard backing, there was a small gap between the back of the bottom shelf and the wall. To eliminate this space and prevent anything from slipping behind the bookcases, we cut and nailed a 1-inch square dowel to the rear edge of the bottom shelf of each of the four bookcases. This simple addition creates a flush finish against the wall, making the unit feel more integrated and secure. Make sure the dowel is securely fastened to provide adequate support.

Step 3 – Determine and Mark Your Bookcase Placement

With the individual bookcases assembled and modified, the next crucial step was to position them against the wall. We carefully arranged them to find the ideal layout, ensuring they were centered within the designated wall space. Once the desired placement was established, we marked the exact positions on the wall. This is a critical step for anchoring, as it ensures everything is perfectly aligned and symmetrical. Use a level to ensure your units are straight and even, making any necessary adjustments before permanent anchoring.

Step 4 – Securely Join the Sides of the Bookcases

To create the illusion of a single, custom-built unit, we connected the adjacent sides of the bookcases. Using wood screws, we firmly attached the units together at both the top and bottom. This step is vital for making the entire structure feel cohesive and solid, eliminating any gaps between the individual bookcases and giving it the robust feel of a bespoke piece of furniture. Pre-drilling pilot holes will prevent the particle board from splitting.

Step 5 – Anchor the Bookcases to the Wall for Safety and Stability

Safety is paramount, especially in a playroom. Using the wall anchors provided with the IKEA bookcases (or superior ones if you prefer), we meticulously secured each unit to the wall studs at the top of the bookcases. Locating studs is crucial for a strong anchor point. This step prevents any tipping hazards, ensuring the built-ins are stable and safe for children and adults alike. Take your time to locate studs accurately and use appropriate hardware for a secure installation.

Once anchored, the structure felt incredibly solid and ready for the real magic to begin – transforming them with wood trim to achieve that authentic built-in aesthetic.

Step 6 – Construct the Custom Wood Top

To truly elevate the IKEA Billy units into bespoke built-ins, a substantial wood top was essential. We began by placing the 1″x12″ board across the top of the assembled bookcases. Using a square tool, we carefully marked where the board needed to be cut with the circular saw, ensuring it perfectly spanned the entire length of our bookcase arrangement. Precision here is key for a polished final look.

(A quick note: construction often doesn’t adhere to daylight hours! It started getting dark around this point, so please forgive the slightly grainy nighttime photos. Curse you, winter short days!)

Once the 1″x12″ board was cut to size, we secured it. First, a bead of Liquid Nails was applied to the top edge of the bookcases for strong adhesion. Then, we drove finishing nails through the top board into the frame of each bookcase, especially at the ends, to ensure a rock-solid attachment. This combination of adhesive and nails provides exceptional stability.

To give the top a truly finished, substantial appearance rather than just a flat plank, we added trim. We cut 1″x2″ boards to size and nailed them to the front edge of the 1″x12″ top, allowing for a slight overhang of about an inch on each end. This overhang creates a beautiful, professional-looking edge that mimics traditional millwork. If you have a miter saw, you could achieve perfectly angled corner joints for the 1″x2″ pieces; however, we simply abutted them, and caulk worked wonders to hide the seams later!

This front trim piece significantly adds to the custom look, giving the top visual depth and weight. Take your time to ensure these pieces are straight and evenly spaced for the best results.

Once the front 1″x2″ trim was attached, we measured and cut additional 1″x2″ pieces to fit between the front trim and the wall on each side. These pieces complete the “wrapper” for the top, forming the corners and the side edges of the countertop-style surface. This step is crucial for achieving a truly built-in appearance, making the top look like a solid, integrated piece of furniture.

Step 7 – Enhance the Front with 1×2 Boards and Address Gaps

At this stage, we meticulously cut and nailed 1″x2″ boards to the front edges of the bookcases. This serves a dual purpose: it conceals the seams where the individual bookcases were screwed together, and it provides a more substantial, custom-made face frame to the units. This trim piece is essential for covering up the factory edges of the IKEA units and giving them a more traditional, finished appearance.

We also focused on the ends of our built-ins, specifically where the bookcases were designed with a small gap meant for a baseboard to run behind. To create a completely flush, seamless look, we cut another piece of 1″x2″ to fit precisely between the wall and the front 1″x2″ trim we just added. Before securing it, we carefully notched out a section using a jigsaw. This custom cut allowed the piece to fit snugly around our existing quarter-round trim on the floor, as this room didn’t have traditional baseboards. This detailed work makes a significant difference in the final integrated look.

Don’t fret if your cuts aren’t absolutely perfect; this is where the magic of caulk truly shines! It can fill small gaps and imperfections, creating a smooth, professional finish that belies any minor missteps.

With these additions, the sides of our built-in units began to take on a completely new, integrated character, no longer appearing as separate pieces of furniture.

Step 8 – Finalize the Side Panels with Trim

To give the sides of our built-ins a fully finished and custom look, we decided to create a rectangular panel effect. We measured and cut one more 1″x2″ piece for each end, attaching it with finishing nails along the outermost edge, flush against the wall. This final piece of trim effectively frames the side of the bookcase, completing the illusion of a solid, built-in structure. It’s these small details that truly transform an off-the-shelf item into a custom masterpiece.

Step 9 – Caulk, Wood Fill, Stain, Prime, Paint, and Seal for a Professional Finish

With all the wood attached, it was time for the meticulous finishing work that truly makes these built-ins shine. First, we went over every single crack and cranny with caulk, using a caulk tool to ensure smooth, clean lines. This step hides all the small imperfections and joints, making the entire structure appear seamless and professionally installed. After the caulk dried completely, we filled any visible nail holes with wood filler, sanded them smooth, and prepared the surfaces for finishing.

Next, we stained the custom wood top with Minwax Special Walnut. This rich, warm tone was chosen to complement our existing hardwood floors, creating a cohesive and natural look. After the stain dried according to manufacturer instructions, we sealed it with several coats of Minwax Polycrylic, which provides durable protection and a beautiful, satiny sheen. For the bookcases themselves, we began with a coat of Kilz Adhesion Primer. This specialized primer is essential when painting over slick laminate surfaces like IKEA furniture, ensuring maximum paint adhesion and preventing chipping. Finally, we painted the bookcases with Sherwin Williams Tree Swallow in a satin finish. We applied multiple thin coats for a smooth, professional-looking result, allowing ample drying time between each coat.

And now, they are perfectly ready for an army of organizing baskets, transforming us into efficient organizing bandits!

While I had my paint supplies out, I seized the opportunity to paint the fireplace mantel in the same inviting color as the built-ins. Soon, I’ll be tackling the fireplace brick and giving that firebox a thorough cleaning. But with the French doors freshly painted (thanks to a brilliant trick I discovered), the walls and trim refreshed, and these super functional built-ins in place, our playroom makeover is truly making significant strides.

It’s genuinely hard to believe how much progress we’ve made since the beginning of the year, when the room looked like this:

Tomorrow, we’re eagerly anticipating swapping out the old ceiling fan for a playful pendant light, which will inject even more character into this space. We’ve also found a clever solution for the tiny, underperforming can lights, ensuring the room is bright and welcoming. The synergy of these changes is transforming the playroom into a vibrant hub for creativity and imaginative play.

A few weeks ago, during a New Year’s sale, I discovered this incredibly bright and cheerful rug. It ties in absolutely perfectly with the new bookcase color and the vibrant hues of the DIY Storybook Art, which are currently just leaning on the built-in top, patiently awaiting their permanent wall placement. These elements, combined with the new built-ins, are weaving together a tapestry of color and functionality that truly defines the playroom’s updated character.

For the remainder of this week, our focus will be on the final touches: touch-up painting, installing electrical plates, securely anchoring the whimsical Narnia reading nook, and arranging the furniture. We are so close to being able to declare this room officially finished! And perhaps, before we bring all the toys back in, a massive toy purge is in order to ensure everything has its proper place.

Currently, Barbies, Legos, and more dress-up dresses than a pageant queen’s entire collection are scattered across all the other downstairs rooms, eagerly awaiting Olivia’s official re-entry into her playroom. This is just further proof that well-designed playrooms are absolute sanity savers! But even amidst the delightful chaos of these little toy piles spread everywhere, I can’t help but look at them and whisper to myself, “You’re going to miss this.” This project has truly been a labor of love, and seeing the vision come to life is incredibly rewarding.

Here’s a quick look at our playroom makeover checklist and our fantastic progress:
