Why Create Your Own Travertine Tile Coasters?
In a world of mass-produced items, handmade crafts offer a unique appeal. DIY travertine tile coasters stand out for several compelling reasons:
- Personalization: Unlike store-bought options, these coasters can be deeply personal. With photo transfer technology, you can immortalize special moments, beloved faces, or unique artistic expressions right onto a functional item.
- High-End Aesthetic at Low Cost: Travertine marble tiles naturally possess a sophisticated, high-quality look. When combined with a custom image transfer, they transform into designer-level pieces without the hefty price tag. This makes them an excellent option for budget-conscious decorators or gift-givers.
- Durability: Travertine is a robust material, ensuring your coasters will withstand daily use. The photo transfer method, when properly sealed, creates a durable, long-lasting image that resists fading and moisture.
- Unique Gifts: Few gifts are as thoughtful and appreciated as something handmade. A set of custom photo coasters makes a perfect present for weddings, anniversaries, housewarmings, holidays, or any special occasion, showing genuine care and effort.
- Creative Outlet: For craft enthusiasts, this project is a delightful way to explore image transfer techniques and work with different materials, offering a fulfilling creative experience.
Essential Supply List for Gorgeous DIY Coasters:
Gathering your materials is the first step towards creating your stunning custom coasters. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Light-colored 4″ square tumbled Travertine marble Tiles: These provide a beautiful, rustic base for your images. Their tumbled finish adds character, and the light color ensures your transferred images pop. You can often find these in bulk boxes at hardware stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot, offering significant savings.
- Omni Gel Transfer Medium: This is the magic ingredient for lifting your image from paper to a flexible film. It’s crucial for achieving a clean and professional transfer.
- A roll of adhesive-backed cork sheet: This provides a protective, non-slip backing for your coasters, preventing scratches on your furniture and adding a polished, finished look.
- Paintbrush: A simple paintbrush is perfect for applying the Omni Gel smoothly and evenly.
- Bowl of Water: For soaking your printed images.
- Scissors or Utility Knife: For trimming images and cork sheets.

Detailed Tutorial for Crafting Your Own Photo Transfer Tile Coasters
Follow these comprehensive steps to create durable, beautiful, and personalized travertine marble coasters:
Step 1: Preparing Your Images for Transfer
Begin by acquiring your desired images. If you’re using the free vintage numbers, download and print the PDF sheet. For personal photos or other designs, select your favorites. The most critical aspect of this step is getting a **laser copy** of your chosen images. Inkjet prints, unfortunately, do not work with this specific transfer method. The toner in laser copies is what adheres to the Omni Gel. Therefore, take your printed images or photos to a copy shop like Staples or Office Max and have them make high-quality laser copies. Ensure the copies are the correct size to fit your 4-inch square tiles, allowing for a small border if desired.
Step 2: Applying the Omni Gel Transfer Medium
This step is pivotal for a successful transfer. You’ll need to apply three distinct coats of the Omni Gel Transfer Medium to the face of your laser copy. Precision and patience are key here. Brush the first coat evenly in a horizontal direction across the entire image. Allow this coat to dry completely. Drying time can vary depending on humidity, but typically takes about 20-30 minutes. Next, apply the second coat in a vertical direction, ensuring full coverage over the first dried layer. Again, let it dry completely. Finally, brush on the third coat in a diagonal direction. This multi-directional application ensures thorough coverage and creates a robust film for the image transfer. Once all three coats are applied, let the final coat dry completely before proceeding. This complete drying process is essential for the gel to properly encapsulate the laser toner.
Step 3: Soaking Your Prepared Images
Once the Omni Gel is thoroughly dry on your laser copy, carefully trim the image to the desired size, matching it to your 4-inch coaster tiles. Then, place the trimmed image into a bowl of clean water. Allow it to soak for 10-20 minutes. This soaking process softens the paper backing, making it easier to remove in the next step, while the Omni Gel protects and holds the transferred image.
Step 4: Revealing Your Transferred Image
Immediately after soaking, while the paper is still wet, gently rub the paper backing with your fingers in a circular motion. You’ll notice the paper fibers starting to peel away. The goal is to remove all of the paper, leaving behind only the clear gel film with your transferred image. This step requires a bit of patience and persistence. It may take some diligent rubbing to get all the paper residue off, but the stunning result is well worth the effort. Be careful not to rub too aggressively, as you could damage the delicate gel film. Once the paper is completely removed, you’ll be left with a translucent, vinyl-like film containing your image.
Step 5: Inspecting and Trimming the Transfer
At this stage, you’ll clearly see your image “trapped” within the thin, flexible, vinyl-like gel piece. It’s quite a marvel to behold! Take a moment to inspect your transfer. If you have any ragged or uneven edges from the rubbing process, now is the perfect time to carefully trim them with a pair of sharp scissors. A clean edge will ensure a professional finish when adhering it to your tile.
Step 6: Adhering the Transfer to the Tile
Now it’s time to bring your image to life on the travertine tile. Use more of the Omni Gel, this time as an adhesive. Apply a generous, even coat to the top surface of your marble tile. Then, apply a thin layer to the back of your gel transfer film. This double application ensures strong adhesion and a secure bond. Carefully center and place your image transfer onto the prepared tile, taking care to align it as desired.
Step 7: Smoothing and Drying
Once the transfer is placed, gently but firmly press it down onto the tile. Work from the center outwards to smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles. If you have a brayer (a small hand-roller used in crafting), this tool would be ideal for achieving a perfectly flat and bubble-free surface. However, your fingers or a credit card wrapped in a soft cloth will work just as well. The image may appear a little cloudy or opaque at first, but don’t worry! The Omni Gel will dry clear, usually within one to two days, revealing the full vibrancy of your transferred image. Allow ample drying time for the best results.
Step 8: Adding the Protective Cork Backing
To complete your DIY travertine coasters and protect your furniture, it’s time to add the adhesive-backed cork. Roll out your cork sheet, adhesive side up. Carefully place a finished tile onto the cork, tracing its outline. Then, using a utility knife or sharp scissors, cut around the traced outline to create a cork piece perfectly sized for your tile. The “Contact” brand cork sheets often come with a convenient grid on the back, making precise cutting incredibly easy. Peel off the adhesive backing from the cork and carefully align it with the back of your tile.
Step 9: Securing the Cork Backing for a Finished Look
Once the cork is in place, firmly smooth it down with your fingers, working from the center outwards, to ensure it adheres securely and evenly to the tile. This step is crucial for both functionality and aesthetics. The cork backing provides a soft buffer between the coaster and your table surfaces, preventing scratches and ensuring stability. It also gives your DIY coasters a beautifully finished, professional appearance, truly elevating them from a simple craft project to a polished home accessory.

Care and Maintenance for Your Photo Coasters:
To ensure your beautiful coasters last for years, wipe them clean with a damp cloth as needed. Avoid submerging them in water or using abrasive cleaners, which could damage the transferred image. While the Omni Gel provides a protective layer, for added durability, especially if you anticipate heavy use, you could apply a clear, water-resistant sealant (like a matte or satin polycrylic) over the entire coaster surface after the Omni Gel has fully cured. This extra step will enhance their resilience against moisture and spills.
