DIY Rust Pastes: Unlocking Creative Potential!
Before we dive into the creation process, it’s important to clarify a few points:
I do NOT claim that my homemade version of this fantastic product is “as good” as the commercially available Rust Pastes.
Absolutely not. Commercial rust pastes are wonderful products that I admire and will continue to use in my crafting endeavors. This DIY approach offers distinct advantages that complement, rather than replace, store-bought options.
What I DO proudly claim is this:
- Instant Gratification: When inspiration strikes and you need a touch of rust NOW, you don’t have to endure the wait for your local art store to restock or an online order to arrive. Your homemade rust paste is ready when you are!
- Economical for Large Projects: If you’re tackling an expansive art piece, planning multiple creations, or simply have a passion for adding rust to “everything,” investing in the raw materials for these DIY craft paint recipes is a smart move. This upfront investment will keep you supplied with custom rusty pastes for months, significantly reducing your ongoing project costs.
- The Joy of Customization: There’s unparalleled satisfaction in blending your own custom rusty tints. You’ll gain complete control over the color depth, texture, and nuance, allowing you to perfectly match your artistic vision and create truly unique patinas.
- A Thoughtful & Unique Gift: Imagine sharing the gift of creativity! These handcrafted rust pastes make a fabulous and unique present for artist friends, fellow crafters, or anyone who enjoys mixed media art. They’re a testament to your thoughtfulness and a truly practical tool for their artistic toolkit.
Alright, now that we understand the incredible value of homemade rust effects, let’s dive into the fun, shall we?
You’ll need some essential supplies to get started!
Supplies for Your DIY Rust Pastes:
Before you begin, ensure you have a dedicated workspace and all your materials at hand. Remember, this can be a messy but incredibly rewarding process!
- Protected Work Surface: A sheet of cardboard, an old placemat, or a plastic tablecloth will adequately protect your table from spills and drips.
- Fine Sand: This is crucial for creating the authentic gritty texture of aged rust. Look for craft sand or very fine play sand.
- Measuring Spoons: For accurate proportions, especially for larger batches.
- Mixing Spatula(s): Dedicate a few inexpensive spatulas for mixing. Plastic or silicone ones work well and are easy to clean.
- 3 Mixing Containers: Small plastic bowls, old yogurt containers, or disposable cups are perfect for blending each color batch.
- Plenty of Damp Rags & Access to a Sink: This is truly a very messy project, so be prepared for efficient clean-up as you go.
- Small Empty Jars with Lids: Essential for storing your finished rust pastes, keeping them fresh and ready for your next project. Small travel-size cosmetic jars or baby food jars work well.
- Aleene’s Original “Tacky” Glue: A strong adhesive that acts as a binder, holding the sand and other ingredients together to form a paste.
- Joint Compound: This provides body and a smooth consistency to the paste, allowing it to be easily spread and textured.
- Disposable Scruffy Brushes: Or any stiff-bristle brushes you don’t mind getting gritty. These are perfect for dabbing and creating textured applications.
- A Flat Brush: Ideal for achieving subtle dry-brush effects and applying lighter layers.
- Cheap Acrylic Craft Paints: The inexpensive .79 versions from craft stores like Michael’s are perfectly suitable. You’ll need:
- Brown
- Orange
- Yellow
- Red
- Black
- Inka Gold: Hematite: For adding that final, subtle metallic sheen that truly mimics oxidized metal.
- A Heat Tool: While not strictly essential, a heat tool (or embossing gun) significantly speeds up drying times between layers, allowing you to work more efficiently.
Important Note on Clean-up: Always scrape and wipe as much of the paste mixture off your tools and hands as possible, disposing of it in the garbage. It’s crucial that we prevent this gritty mixture from going down the drain, as it can cause plumbing issues.

How to Create Your Custom DIY Rust Pastes: A Step-by-Step Guide
Phase 1: Building the Gritty Foundation
Begin by adding Two Tablespoons of Fine Sand to each of your three separate mixing containers. This forms the essential abrasive texture for our rust effect.
Here comes the fun, slightly messy part!
To the fine sand in each container, add One Tablespoon each of Joint Compound and Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue. These ingredients will bind the sand and create a workable paste consistency.
Now, thoroughly mix this goopy concoction until all ingredients are well blended and you have a consistent, thick paste. Take your time to ensure there are no dry pockets of sand or unmixed compound.
Phase 2: Crafting the Deep Brown Base (Your First Rust Shade)
Into your first mixed base, add 1/2 Tablespoon of Brown Acrylic Craft Paint. This will form the rich, dark base of your rust effect.
Next, add a scant 1/4 Tablespoon of Black Acrylic Craft Paint. The black will deepen the brown, creating a more realistic, shadowed rust tone.
Mix diligently until the brown and black paints are thoroughly blended into the paste, resulting in a consistent, dark rust shade.
Once blended, carefully transfer your rich Brown DIY Rust Paste to one of your jars with a lid. Congratulations, you’ve completed your first custom color!
Remember to clean your mixing spatula and container thoroughly before proceeding to the next color to avoid unintentional color mixing.
Phase 3: Developing Vibrant Orange Tones (Mid-Tone Rust)
Moving on to your second gritty mixture, add 1 Tablespoon of Orange Acrylic Craft Paint. This will form the bright, oxidized mid-tones of your rust.
To give the orange a more natural, earthy depth, add just 2 Drops of Brown Acrylic Craft Paint to the orange mixture. This subtly mutes the brightness, making it more authentic.
Next, add 2 Drops of Red Acrylic Craft Paint. Red adds a touch of vibrancy and a hint of fresh oxidation, perfect for layered rust effects.
Mix these colors thoroughly! Observe how the orange, brown, and red begin to meld into a complex, nuanced rust shade.
To subtly tone down the intensity and add a hint of grime, incorporate 1 Drop of Black Acrylic Craft Paint. This helps to make the orange less vibrant and more organically rusty.
Finally, to warm up the overall color and mimic the brighter tones found in actively rusting metal, add 4 Drops of Yellow Acrylic Craft Paint. This touch of yellow brightens without overpowering the orange base.
Feel free to adjust this recipe to your own liking – add more yellow for a brighter rust, or another drop of black for a grungier feel. This is your custom paste!
Once you are satisfied with your custom orange shade, transfer the Orange DIY Rust Paste to a separate lidded jar for storage.
Phase 4: Creating Bright Yellow Patina (Highlights)
Now, onto our final color, the yellow highlight for a freshly oxidized patina. Clean your tools thoroughly once more.
For this last slurry, add only 1/2 Teaspoon of Yellow Acrylic Craft Paint. This will be a lighter, brighter rust accent.
To warm up the yellow and give it a hint of rust, add just 2 Drops of Orange Acrylic Craft Paint. Mix well until you have a soft, rusty yellow.
Finally, transfer your Yellow DIY Rust Paste to its own lidded jar. All three of your custom rust pastes are now complete!
You are finished with the mixing!
Yep, that’s all there is to it to create your own bespoke rust paste palette. Now, go wash those hands and implements thoroughly, ensuring no gritty residue goes down the drain!
Time to PLAY and Create Stunning Rust Effects!
How to Apply Your DIY Rusty Pastes for Authentic Patina:
Now that you have your trio of custom rust pastes, it’s time to bring your projects to life. The key to realistic rust is layering and variation.
Laying the Foundation: The Dark Brown Layer
Using a scruffy, STIFF bristled brush (like your disposable scruffy brushes), generously DAB a thick layer of the Brown DIY Rust Paste onto your project. Focus on areas where rust would naturally accumulate. While I used an old sample board with existing texture, these DIY rust pastes can be applied onto almost any substrate – wood, metal, plastic, paper, or even glass!
For quicker results and to prevent smudging, dry this layer with a Heat Tool until it’s set to the touch.
Building Depth with Orange Tones
Next, apply a less intense layer of the Orange DIY Rust Paste. Instead of a solid coat, aim for an organic, irregular pattern, focusing on different areas than your brown base. This creates a visual depth, mimicking the varied oxidation levels found in genuine rust.
Adding Highlights: The Yellow Dry Brush Technique
For subtle highlights and that fresh patina look, use a dry-brush method to add tiny touches of Yellow DIY Rust Paste. Load only a minimal amount of paste onto your dry flat brush, then lightly skim it over the raised textures of your project. This technique allows the underlying colors to show through, creating a multi-dimensional effect.
Introducing Shadows: Subtle Black Touches
Once your layers are dry (use your heat tool again if needed), very cautiously add subtle touches of Black Acrylic Paint. Use a very dry flat bristle brush for this. The key here is restraint; a little black goes a long way in creating shadowed areas and enhancing the illusion of deep corrosion, adding grittiness and definition.
I have to say, the transformation achieved with these DIY rust pastes is truly MAGIC IN A JAR!
Just LOOK at the incredible, authentic result!
The Metallic Touch: Inka Gold for Authentic Sheen
For a truly exceptional final touch, you can add a tiny smidgen of Inka Gold: Hematite with your fingertips. Gently rub it onto the highest points and edges of your rusted surface. This creates a very subtle hint of metallic sheen, perfectly indicating the underlying metal beneath the rust, making the whole effect incredibly realistic and dimensional.
I simply couldn’t resist showcasing a few of my favorite Graphics Fairy images alongside this technique. The Vintage Rustic feel of the DIY rust paste serves as the perfect complement to these quirky and charming antique portraits!

Here, in a close-up, you can clearly see the delicate touches of Inka Gold: Hematite, adding that very subtle, yet impactful, hint of metallic sheen to catch the light.
By the way, the remarkably realistic screw heads and bolt heads that you see integrated into this mixed media piece are created using an advanced technique taught in the popular Mixed Media for Beginners Online Course! It’s an excellent resource for expanding your crafting skills.
This “Cranky Boy” portrait, in particular, just melts my heart. And I can assure you, the DIY Rust Pastes are just as gritty, textured, and deliciously authentic in person as they appear in these photographs!
Observe the final project, demonstrating the full potential of these homemade rust effects:
How incredibly fun and satisfying! I find myself frequently mixing up batches of these DIY Rust Pastes whenever I crave the distinct, aged aesthetic of deliciously corroded metal in my art. It’s truly addictive!
In other words: I use them ALL THE TIME!
I particularly adore the way this specific color combination creates a naturally glowing and organic background for these captivating portraits. A quick note on sealing: because Aleene’s Tacky Glue acts as such a strong binder, it’s not strictly necessary to seal the surface of your rust paste application. However, if you prefer to add a protective layer, be sure to use a Matte Sealer to preserve the authentic, non-glossy appearance of rust!
