How to Make Your Own DIY French Honeycomb Coasters

Creating these bespoke French honeycomb coasters is a rewarding process, blending simple woodworking with elegant decorative techniques. Follow these detailed steps to craft your own set of personalized, vintage-inspired coasters that will undoubtedly impress your guests and add a unique flair to your home decor.

Essential Supplies for Your DIY Honeycomb Coasters:

Gathering the right tools and materials is the first step towards a successful crafting journey. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you’ll need to create your stunning French Honeycomb Coasters:

For Creating the Hexagon Coaster Blanks:

    • Wood Material: Hardboard (HDF – High Density Fiberboard) or MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) are ideal for their smooth finish and ease of cutting. Alternatively, any clean, flat scrap wood you have on hand will work.
    • Hexagon Template: Download it here. This ensures perfectly uniform hexagonal shapes.
    • Pencil: For tracing your template onto the wood.
    • Cardstock Paper: For printing your template, providing a sturdy guide for tracing and cutting.
    • Scissors: To cut out the paper hexagon template.
    • Laserjet Printer: For printing templates and, later, your waterslide decals (if using).
    • Cutting Tool: A top-handle jigsaw for precise cuts, or a table saw if you have access and experience.
    • Sandpaper: 120 or 180 grit is perfect for smoothing edges after cutting, ensuring a refined finish.

For Painting & Faux Distressing the Coasters:

    • White Acrylic Paint: The base for our distressed look, offering a fresh yet aged foundation.
    • Large Brush: For applying the base white paint using the dry brushing technique.
    • Small Brush OR Sponge: For carefully adding gold accents and finer distressing.
    • Gold Acrylic Paint: To introduce elegant metallic highlights, accentuating the honeycomb design.

For Decorating the Coasters with Beautiful French Graphics:

    • French Graphics: Printed from the free downloadable PDF provided.
    • Waterslide Decal Paper: (Laserjet printer compatible) is recommended for a seamless, “painted-on” look. If you have an inkjet printer, ensure you purchase inkjet waterslide decal paper.
    • Home Printer: A laserjet printer is ideal for waterslide decals due to the permanence of its toner, but inkjet can also work with specific decal paper.
    • Scissors: For carefully cutting out your printed graphics.
    • Small Bowl with Water: Essential for activating the waterslide decals.
    • Paper Towels: For gently absorbing excess water and smoothing decals.

    For Sealing Your Finished Coasters:

    • Matte Finish Spray OR Water-based Sealer: To protect your beautiful artwork from moisture and wear. A matte finish will retain the distressed aesthetic.
    • Brush: If using a brush-on water-based sealer.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Create & Cut Your Hexagon Coasters

The foundation of our beautiful honeycomb coasters lies in perfectly cut hexagonal shapes. This initial phase requires a bit of precision and care, but the effort will pay off in the final product’s quality.

1 . Begin by preparing your honeycomb shapes. Download the simple hexagon template provided in the supply list. Print this template onto cardstock paper, which is sturdier than regular printer paper, making it easier to trace accurately. Using sharp scissors, carefully cut out the hexagon shape along its black border. This will be your master template. Now, place your template on your chosen wood material (MDF or HDF are excellent choices for their smooth finish and consistent density, but any flat scrap wood will do). Using a pencil, meticulously trace the hexagon shape onto the wood five or six times, depending on the size of the set you wish to create. Ensure you leave enough space between each tracing for cutting.

    2. With your shapes traced, it’s time to cut them out. A top-handle jigsaw is the ideal tool for this task, allowing for intricate cuts. If you’re new to using a jigsaw, consider asking for help from someone experienced, like Mr. Dreamy did for me! Safety is paramount, so always wear appropriate eye protection and ensure your workpiece is securely clamped. Carefully cut along your traced lines until all five or six coasters are detached. After cutting, you might find the edges a bit rough. Use 120 or 180 grit sandpaper to gently sand down all edges until they are smooth to the touch. This not only makes the coasters pleasant to handle but also prepares them for better paint adhesion and a more refined finish.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Paint & Faux Distress Your Hexagon Coasters

This stage is where your coasters truly begin to take on their vintage character. The faux distressed finish, combined with elegant gold accents, creates an authentic, time-worn appearance that is both chic and inviting.

3-4. To achieve a beautiful faux distressed finish, we’ll employ the dry brushing technique. The key to dry brushing is using a minimal amount of paint with absolutely no added water. Dip your large brush into the white acrylic paint, then offload most of the paint onto a paper towel until the brush feels almost dry. Starting from the center of each coaster, gently brush outwards in varying directions. The goal isn’t to achieve complete coverage but to allow some of the raw wood to show through, particularly around the edges. This creates a naturally worn effect, mimicking years of gentle use. Don’t worry about following a precise pattern; embrace the spontaneity of the brush strokes, leaving smaller or larger areas less covered to enhance the authentic distressed look. Since you’re using very little paint, your coasters will dry exceptionally quickly, allowing you to move swiftly to the next exciting step.

5-6. Gold accents are crucial for accentuating the “honeycomb” concept and adding a touch of sophisticated shimmer. With the white paint fully dry, take a small brush (or a sponge for a softer touch) and dip it sparingly into the gold acrylic paint. Again, remember to offload most of the paint to achieve a dry brush effect. Apply these gilded highlights to the areas you intentionally left less covered with white paint, especially along the edges and in any desired spots. You have complete creative control here: you can opt for a subtle shimmer by barely touching the surface, or build up a more prominent gilded effect. These delicate gold touches will catch the light beautifully, enhancing the vintage appeal. Allow the gold paint to dry completely before proceeding to the decoration phase. Proper drying ensures the layers of paint are set and won’t smudge when applying decals.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Decorate Your Coasters with Beautiful French Graphics

This is where the magic truly happens, transforming your painted wood blanks into elegant French-inspired masterpieces using waterslide decals. The seamless integration of these graphics will give your coasters a professional, hand-painted look.

NOTE: The following instructions are tailored for waterslide decal paper specifically designed for and printed using a laserjet printer. If you are using an inkjet printer, please refer to the specific instructions provided with your inkjet decal paper, as the steps, particularly regarding sealing the printed image, may vary significantly.

    7. Begin by printing the French graphics onto your waterslide decal paper using your laserjet printer. Ensure the print quality is set to high for crisp images. Once printed, use your scissors to carefully cut out each individual image. Be sure to completely remove their black borders for the cleanest possible transfer. Precise cutting is key here for a professional finish.

    8. Prepare a small bowl of room-temperature water. Gently immerse one of your cut decals into the water. You’ll only need to wait for a few seconds – typically 10-20 seconds – until you feel the decal begin to separate from its paper backing when gently nudged. Don’t oversoak, as this can make the decal too fragile.

    9. While the decal is soaking, drop a small amount of water onto the surface of the coaster where you intend to place the graphic. This layer of water will act as a lubricant, allowing you to easily position and adjust the decal. Remove the decal from the bowl and carefully slide it onto the wet surface of the coaster.

    10. Once the decal is on the coaster, you’ll need to carefully remove the white paper backing. Slowly and gently glide the backing paper away from the decal, pulling it from one side while holding the decal in place. The decal should slide smoothly off onto the coaster’s surface.

    11. This is your window for adjustment! If the decal isn’t perfectly centered, or if you need to straighten it, you can still gently slide it around on the wet surface. Make sure you have enough water underneath to prevent it from sticking prematurely. Once satisfied with the placement, take a clean paper towel and gently smooth out the decal from the center outwards, carefully pushing out any air bubbles or excess water. Blot, don’t rub, to avoid tearing the delicate decal. Admire your first beautifully decorated French honeycomb coaster!

    12. Repeat steps 8-11 for all your remaining coasters, taking your time with each one. Once all decals are applied, allow them to dry undisturbed for approximately 30 minutes to an hour. This crucial drying time allows the decal adhesive to bond securely to the coaster surface before sealing.

NOTE: Alternative Decoration Method (if waterslide decals aren’t available): If you find waterslide decals challenging to source, or prefer a different approach, you can still achieve a beautiful result using cardstock paper and Mod Podge. Simply print the French graphics onto good quality cardstock. Cut out the images as before, removing any borders. Apply a thin, even coat of Mod Podge (matte or satin finish) to the coaster surface where the image will go. Carefully place your cut-out graphic onto the wet Mod Podge, smoothing out any bubbles or wrinkles with your fingers or a brayer. Apply another thin coat of Mod Podge over the top of the image to seal it. While the images might appear slightly more “visible” and not blend quite as seamlessly as waterslide decals, this is a fantastic and accessible alternative that still yields charming, handmade coasters. You can then proceed to the sealing step as described below.

13-14. To ensure your beautiful coasters are durable, water-resistant, and ready for long-term use, sealing is a critical final step. You have a couple of excellent options: a matte or glossy acrylic spray sealer, or a brush-on water-based sealer. If using a spray sealer, always work in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors, to avoid inhaling fumes. Apply several light, even coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. If you opt for a water-based sealer (which is what I used for a natural, brush-on finish), apply a thin, even first coat with a clean brush over the entire top surface and sides of your new DIY Honeycomb Coasters. Once this first coat is completely dry to the touch (check the product instructions for specific drying times), apply a second coat for enhanced protection. This sealing process is what will truly allow you to use and enjoy your coasters for many years to come, protecting the distressed paint and delicate graphics from spills and wear.

And that’s it! Pretty simple in terms of steps, but yielding incredibly amazing and professional-looking results, wouldn’t you agree? The transformation from simple wood blanks to these vintage French-inspired beauties is truly satisfying.

I am absolutely thrilled with how these DIY Honeycomb Coasters turned out. The seamless effect achieved with the waterslide decal paper truly played a pivotal role in creating this stunning, integrated look. The inherent transparency of the decals allowed them to blend beautifully with the faux distressed background, giving the impression that the graphics were painted directly onto the wood. This meant I could achieve my desired level of distressing and then simply layer the elegant French graphics right on top, creating a rich, multi-dimensional finish that looks genuinely aged and sophisticated. It’s this subtle integration that elevates the project from a simple craft to a piece of art.

Your magnificent DIY Honeycomb Coasters are now complete and eagerly awaiting to share quality moments with your cherished friends and family! Whether it’s a casual coffee morning or a festive evening gathering, these coasters are ready to protect your surfaces in style. The bee and honeycomb theme truly comes alive when accompanied by such a refreshing beverage, enhancing the overall sensory experience of your gathering. It’s these small details that make entertaining truly special.
