Immerse Yourself in the Wild Ocean Junk Journal: A Creative Journey with Kate Stevens

Meet the Artist: Kate Stevens of Pixie K Designs

As Kate shares her inspiration, it’s clear her environment deeply influences her artistry. “I am incredibly fortunate to reside by the ocean, where I daily immerse myself in its profound beauty and raw power,” she explains. “The beach near my home is a place of wild, rocky, and ever-changing moods, sometimes even a little dangerous. What I adore most is its constant transformation; it’s never the same two days in a row. The rhythmic sound of the waves is often the last thing I hear as I drift to sleep and the first sensation that greets me upon waking.” This profound connection to the sea, with its constantly shifting spectrum of greens, grays, and blues, served as the primary muse for this extraordinary junk journal.

Crafting the Cover: The Heart of the Ocean-Inspired Journal

The journey of creating the “Wild Ocean Junk Journal” begins with its captivating cover. Kate meticulously constructed the foundation from sturdy board, then enveloped it in a piece of hand-painted cloth. “I truly wrestled with mixing my paints to achieve the exact shade I envisioned,” Kate admits, reflecting on the artistic process. “As I’m not extensively experienced with color mixing, it took many attempts, but eventually, I settled on this perfect, deep green that evokes the mysterious depths of the ocean.” This dedication to achieving the precise aesthetic speaks volumes about the passion poured into each creation.

The intricate frame gracing the front cover is a testament to Kate’s mixed media expertise. Fashioned from painted card, it’s adorned with a captivating crackle paste finish, giving it an aged, weather-worn appearance reminiscent of ancient sea-worn artifacts. This textured base is further embellished with a thoughtful array of elements: handcrafted mixed media stones, delicate die cuts that echo marine life, a tactile string net, and authentic shells gathered from the very shores that inspired the journal. Nestled within this beautiful frame is one of Kate’s cherished vintage images from The Graphics Fairy’s “Ocean Blues Ephemera” bundle. “I knew this particular image, with its enchanting beauty, would eventually find its perfect home either on or within one of my journals,” she shares. Its placement here is nothing short of magical, setting the tone for the entire journal. This beloved image isn’t just on the cover; its beauty is echoed inside, thoughtfully incorporated onto a tag within the front cover, creating a cohesive visual narrative from the moment you open the journal.

A Sanctuary for Stories: Exploring the Journal’s Interior

Delving into the “Wild Ocean Junk Journal,” one immediately appreciates the thoughtful construction of its interior. This journal features five robust signatures, a testament to its generous capacity for stories and memories. Staying true to her signature style, Kate has intentionally left ample open space throughout the pages. “It’s important to me that my journals aren’t overly stuffed from the outset,” she explains. “This design philosophy ensures plenty of room for writing, sketching, and for the owner to infuse their own personal touches and creative expressions.” This design choice transforms the journal from a mere collection of pages into a living, evolving space, ready to grow with its owner. Whether it’s the addition of cherished memorabilia, collected ephemera, or heartfelt prose, the journal is a welcoming canvas awaiting further artistic development.

Revolutionizing Pages with Borderless Printing

A significant upgrade in Kate’s creative process has been the acquisition of a new printer, boasting borderless printing capabilities. “Let me tell you, it’s been an absolute game-changer!” Kate exclaims, highlighting the transformative impact on her work. This innovative feature has allowed her to experiment with a technique that addresses a common challenge in junk journaling: the stark contrast between a printed vintage image and a plain white reverse side. Now, she masterfully prints a captivating image from one of The Graphics Fairy bundles on one side of a page, then seamlessly prints a coordinating background image from the “Vintage Paperie” bundle on the reverse. This ingenious method eliminates the distracting white space, providing a beautifully neutral and cohesive backdrop for further journaling, decorating, or artistic embellishment. The result is a more harmonious and authentic vintage feel, where digital prints blend effortlessly with genuine antique pages, enhancing the overall aesthetic and tactile experience of the journal.

A Symphony of Textures: The Art of Paper Selection

The interior pages of Kate’s “Wild Ocean Junk Journal” are a testament to the power of diverse paper selections, each chosen for its unique character and contribution to the overall aesthetic. Kate has expertly incorporated a variety of mediums: traditional tea-dyed copy paper, offering a classic aged look; blue copy paper, which she further tea-stained to achieve a unique, softened hue; genuine vintage music paper, adding a layer of historical charm and texture; and plain copy paper, strategically used for her innovative double-sided printing technique with “Vintage Paperie” images. This thoughtful mix creates a tactile and visually rich experience, where each turn of the page reveals a new texture and subtle color variation, enriching the journal’s deep connection to the ocean’s ever-changing palette.

Elevating Ephemera: Cardstock, Matte Presentation, and Authentic Invoices

Throughout the journal, Kate has carefully chosen materials for her ephemera, opting for a mix of sturdy card stock and high-quality matte presentation paper. This choice ensures that each piece of ephemera not only looks beautiful but also withstands the test of time and handling, becoming an integral, durable part of the journal’s narrative. Among these carefully selected pieces, Kate’s affection for vintage invoice images shines through. “I’ve incorporated images of old invoices from both the ‘French Attic Ephemera’ bundle and the ‘French Paperie Collection’,” she notes. “These images are among my absolute favorites, and I find myself using them in nearly every journal I create.” The appeal lies in the challenge of transformation: “I truly enjoy the process of trying to make them appear as authentic as possible, as if they were genuine artifacts discovered from another era.” This dedication to historical accuracy and aesthetic realism adds a profound layer of depth and storytelling to each page, inviting the viewer to imagine the history behind every faded script and formal detail.

A Global Touch: Incorporating Unique Vintage Elements

To further enrich the narrative of the “Wild Ocean Junk Journal,” Kate has thoughtfully curated a diverse collection of vintage and antique papers from her personal stash. These unique finds are meticulously chosen to align with the journal’s overarching color scheme—a harmonious blend of grey, green, and blue—perfectly mirroring the sea’s profound and ever-shifting hues. Adding a truly personal and distinctive touch, Kate has also woven in both original and copied pieces of New Zealand vintage ephemera. This inclusion not only pays homage to her own heritage but also injects a unique geographical and historical dimension into the journal, making each page a discovery of global charm and personal significance. It’s a beautiful example of how personal history can intertwine with artistic expression.

Crafting Mini Marvels: The Handmade Notebook

One of the delightful features within this journal is a charming mini notebook, a testament to Kate’s clever use of digital resources. “I created this little gem using Photoshop Elements,” she reveals. “I scaled down the captivating book cover image from the ‘Ocean Blues’ bundle and then layered the elegant image of a woman, also from the same bundle, on top.” To create a cohesive look, she ingeniously reversed the woman’s image for the back of the notebook, then printed both elements. For the pages of this tiny treasure, Kate utilized scraps of the very papers she had incorporated into the main journal. This not only ensures perfect coordination but also offers a wonderful practical tip for minimizing waste and maximizing the beauty of every precious material.

The Allure of Mermaids: A Page from La Mer

Another enchanting highlight is the mermaid image page, a captivating printable sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s exquisite “La Mer” bundle. Demonstrating her signature double-sided printing technique, Kate has enhanced this beautiful image by backing it with a complementary background from the “Vintage Paperie” bundle. This creates a visually rich and coherent page, ensuring that every glance, front or back, is a delight.
