Hello, Graphics Fairy friends! I’m Diana from Dreams Factory, and I’m thrilled to share another delightful DIY project with you today: crafting exquisite vintage DIY Bee Tags. This project offers a captivating journey through mixed media techniques, culminating in a touch of luxurious gold that elevates these tags to an entirely new level of chic. Perfect for crafters of all skill levels, these tags blend historical charm with contemporary sparkle, making them truly unique.
When I first embarked on creating the summery printable for this project, I hadn’t yet envisioned the final embellishments. My initial goal was to evoke feelings of warm, bright summer days and the irresistible allure of dripping honey. Almost instinctively, gold foil sprang to mind as the perfect element to capture this essence. And what a choice it proved to be! I find myself constantly admiring these glowing beauties, each one a miniature masterpiece shimmering with vintage charm and golden warmth.
The distinctive 3D ‘flying’ wings of our bees draw inspiration from a previous favorite creation of mine: The DIY Mixed Media Bee Tags. If you haven’t explored that project yet, I highly recommend it for another dose of creative inspiration and a deeper dive into crafting charming bee-themed elements.
The complimentary printable I’ve designed for you serves as an exceptional foundation, inviting you to experiment and unleash your creative spirit. It features a beautifully detailed black and white bumblebee alongside unique honeycomb elements, all imbued with a classic vintage French flair. This versatile design is highly adaptable, making it perfect for not only these tags but also countless other creative endeavors. To enhance your crafting experience, I’ve included the 3D wings as separate elements on the sides, along with four hexagons and four circles, which can be used as reinforced holes for your tags. It’s an all-in-one resource for crafting perfection!

A Quick Note on Gold Foil:
For those new to the dazzling world of gold foil, it’s important to understand that it differs significantly from gold leaf. Gold foil typically adheres with a special adhesive that remains tacky, allowing for clean transfers and precise designs. Gold leaf, conversely, often requires a size (gilding adhesive) that dries to a specific tackiness and can be more delicate to handle, yielding a more irregular, antique finish. If you’re unfamiliar with working with gold foil, I highly recommend exploring these introductory projects first:

- High-quality cardstock paper: Essential for durability and holding the various mediums without warping.
- Reliable home printer: To ensure crisp, clear prints of your bee and honeycomb designs.
- Corner rounder punch: An optional but highly recommended tool for giving your tags a softer, more finished appearance.
- Ink sprays: I used vibrant yellow, magenta, and rich brown to create a watercolor effect. These add a beautiful base color and depth.
- Gold acrylic paint and a small brush: For adding metallic accents and highlights to your honeycomb patterns.
- Gold metallic nail polish: Offers a unique raised texture and brilliant shine, perfect for specific details.
- A stamp pad (I used dark gold) or a distress ink pad: To create a vintage, aged look around the edges of your tags.
- Gold foil: The star of the show, providing that luxurious, shimmering finish.

Let’s dive into the creative process! Follow these detailed steps to transform your printable into stunning, personalized bee tags.
Step 1: Artistic Paper Staining – Setting the Vintage Tone
Our journey begins by giving the printable a beautiful, aged foundation. Print your free printable design onto the chosen cardstock. Before you start, lay down a plastic sheet or a non-absorbent surface to protect your workspace. I opted for ink sprays to achieve a gorgeous watercolor-like effect, but don’t hesitate to experiment with other mediums. Highly diluted acrylic paint, coffee, tea, or even this fantastic avocado dye can produce equally captivating results. Distress inks are also an excellent option for adding subtle, earthy tones. Choose colors that inspire you and align with the vintage aesthetic you’re aiming for. Lately, I’ve been particularly fond of yellow and magenta ink sprays, and I savored every mist applied to the paper! My goal wasn’t overly vibrant tags, but rather a soft, intriguing base that would perfectly complement the forthcoming gold foil.
To create a delicate vignette effect, I began with lighter colors in the center and gradually moved towards the edges with darker hues. This technique, applied before individual cutting, yields a delightful ‘flower power’ surprise with each finished tag.
- Start with your lightest color, in my case, yellow. Lightly spray ink here and there, focusing primarily on the inside areas of the tags.
- Next, introduce your second color, magenta. Gently mist it towards the edges of each tag, allowing it to blend softly with the yellow.
- For added depth and definition, apply a small amount of brown ink to the very edges. Then, go back with a lighter touch of the yellow and magenta to brighten specific areas and enhance the blending. Remember to spray some ink on the additional elements like the wings and reinforced holes too!
- Once dried, the paper will likely become slightly crispier and a little wavy. If you prefer a flatter surface, simply place it between the pages of a heavy book for a few hours (I chose to embrace the natural texture).
Step 2: Precise Paper Cutting – Defining Shapes and Edges
With your beautifully stained paper ready, it’s time to define the individual elements of your tags. Precision here will contribute significantly to the professional look of your finished project.
- Using your sharp scissors, carefully cut out each tag along its outline. Take your time, especially around any intricate curves, to ensure clean edges. Also, cut out each of the additional bee wings. For the reinforced holes (the small hexagons and circles), I found it easier to paint them first while they were still part of the larger sheet, before cutting them out. This prevents them from moving around while you apply paint.
- As an optional but highly recommended step, use a corner puncher to round the edges of your tags. This adds a wonderfully soft, professional finish and enhances the vintage aesthetic. If you don’t have a punch, you can carefully use scissors to gently round the corners, striving for an even curve on all sides. A neatly rounded edge truly makes a difference!
P.S. While I initially performed the corner rounding later in my process, doing it at this stage, immediately after cutting the main tag shapes, is indeed the most efficient and ideal time.
Step 3: Acrylic Paint and Nail Polish Accents – Adding Metallic Depth
This stage is where the metallic magic truly begins, adding captivating interest and depth to your tags. I had immense fun experimenting with metallic acrylic paint and gold metallic nail polish to highlight certain honeycomb hexagons and other additional elements. The goal is to introduce shimmer and dimension, drawing the eye to specific details. Feel free to explore other metallic mediums such as calligraphy ink, liquid gold leaf, or even metallic watercolors.
For visual balance, I painted the hexagons in “unpaired numbers” (e.g., 3, 5, or 7 per tag), as the human eye is naturally drawn to these arrangements, creating a more dynamic and pleasing composition.
- Using a small brush, apply a bit of gold acrylic paint to some of the honeycomb hexagons on your tags, following a somewhat random, unpaired numbers pattern. Don’t strive for perfect symmetry; a natural, organic application enhances the vintage feel.
- Next, using the gold nail polish, repeat the unpaired numbers pattern on other tags. I found that the brush included with the nail polish bottle worked surprisingly well for application, allowing for an almost raised, textured effect that I absolutely adored. Nail polish tends to dry quickly on paper, so don’t be concerned if it appears slightly gloopy in some areas; this texture beautifully contributes to the overall vintage aesthetic.
- For the additional bee wings and the reinforced holes, I opted for diluted gold acrylic paint. When diluted, acrylic paint becomes more transparent, allowing the original printed design to subtly show through, which was the desired effect for these delicate elements.
- Observe how your tags are beginning to transform! Each metallic accent adds a layer of sophistication and visual appeal.
Step 4: Distressing the Edges – Enhancing Vintage Authenticity
To further amplify the beautiful vintage aesthetic of your tags, distressing the edges is a crucial step. This technique adds an aged, worn look that instantly transports your craft piece to another era. Grab your favorite distress inks, or even a regular ink pad (I used a charming mini one), and gently run it along all the edges of each tag, paying particular attention to the corners. The level of distressing is entirely a personal preference – some prefer a subtle whisper of age, while others might go for a more pronounced, grungy effect. I intentionally designed these tags with ample room on the edges, inviting you to experiment and distress as boldly as you wish!
P.S. (again) Although I personally completed this distressing step later in my project, performing it at this stage, after the metallic painting and before the intricate gold foil application, is indeed the ideal time. It allows the distressed edges to fully integrate with the underlying layers.
Step 5: The Grand Finale – Applying the Gold Foil
Now for the most dazzling part of the project: applying the gold foil! This step truly brings the ‘wow’ factor to your bee tags, transforming them with brilliant shimmer. For this, you will need a fineline glue applicator and a specialized gold foil glue. These two tools, along with your chosen gold foil, are indispensable for precise application, giving you unparalleled freedom to experiment with gold foil designs on your own terms. You can draw any pattern, let it dry, and then reveal your metallic masterpiece – it’s truly amazing!
For these tags, I chose to create a radiant gold foil outline around each honeycomb hexagon, and also completely or partially fill some of the hexagons with gold. While achieving perfectly straight lines with a fineline applicator can be a delightful challenge, I found that small, charmingly imperfect curves and slight variations only added to the vintage, handmade appeal of the tags.
- Begin by carefully drawing with your gold foil glue applicator. Start from the left side of a hexagon and gradually trace along its edges. As you go, you can also partially or completely fill some of the hexagons with glue, creating solid gold areas or artistic drips. Essentially, you’ll be ‘painting’ with glue directly onto the honeycomb lines and patterns as desired. For an extra touch of sweetness, I created a ‘dripping’ effect on some of the inner areas of the hexagons, making them appear like luscious, liquid honey gold once the foil is applied!
- Once you’ve applied the glue, gently tilt the tag to inspect all your lines and filled areas, ensuring thorough coverage. Then, set the tags aside and allow the glue to dry completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Typically, the glue will appear white when first applied and will turn transparent and distinctly tacky once it’s ready for foil application. This tackiness is crucial for the foil transfer.
- Once the glue is perfectly dry and tacky, cut a piece of gold foil slightly larger than the area you’ve glued. Carefully place the gold foil, shiny side up, directly over the tacky glue. Using your index finger, firmly press and rub the foil over each glued element. Ensure good contact and pressure, then peel back the foil starting from one corner. Prepare to be utterly mesmerized as the stunning gold is revealed, clinging perfectly to your design!
Repeat this enchanting step for all your tags, and allow yourself to be surprised and delighted by the outcome each and every time. The transformation is truly captivating!
Step 6: The Small Details – Bringing Your Bees to Life
The final touches are all about bringing your bee tags to life and adding practical elements. These small details will ensure your tags are not only beautiful but also ready for use.
- It’s time to make your bees fly! Carefully glue the additional wings you cut earlier onto the back of each bee on the tags. Position them to create a lovely 3D, fluttering effect that adds dynamism to your design.
- For an extra layer of detail, use a colored pencil (I chose a dark brown for a subtle, natural look) to draw and highlight the contour of the original printed wings on the tags. This adds depth and helps the 3D wings integrate seamlessly.
- Decide whether you wish to use the reinforced holes. I found that the hexagonal shapes perfectly complemented the overall honeycomb theme, so I used standard paper glue to attach them securely to my tags. These not only look good but also strengthen the tag if you plan to punch a hole through it.
- Speaking of paper glue, you might be surprised to find that some common paper glues can also work wonders for applying gold foil, creating a delightfully irregular, almost distressed vintage effect. I’ve had success with Staedtler and UHU glue sticks for this trick. Simply apply a small amount of glue to the paper, press the gold foil on top, and then gently peel it away. I initially thought of doing this on the wings and reinforced holes after attaching them to the tags, but for ease, it’s ideal to apply the foil to these small pieces BEFORE you glue them onto the main tag. This will make your crafting much smoother!
I am absolutely enamored with the finished, simply gorgeous look of these Gold Foil Honeycomb & Bee Tags! At this stage, you can punch holes through the reinforced areas if you desire, provided you can actually locate your hole puncher – my “well-organized” craft supplies often require a little extra TLC!
These versatile tags offer a myriad of uses, and I’m sure your mind is already brimming with countless ideas! Employ them as elegant gift tags, thoughtful embellishments on presents, or discover imaginative ways to integrate them into your home decor. Consider decorating recycled jars or bottles with them, hanging them delicately from drawer pulls, or using them as charming mini signs nestled among a curated stack of vintage books.
They also make a chic and sophisticated addition to your junk journals, art journals, or any other creative projects you might be working on. Their vintage appeal and golden shimmer will undoubtedly elevate any creation.
The inherent magic of metallic gold foil lies in its ability to endlessly fascinate with its shimmering beauty. It captures light in such diverse and unexpected ways, creating a spectrum of gorgeous effects that continually spark creativity. I truly hope it ignites the same sparkling inspiration within you!
