Clever & Thrifty Craft Room Storage Solutions
Let’s be honest, for many creative individuals, exceptional organization skills aren’t always our strongest suit. We often prefer the joyous act of creation over the meticulous task of sorting and tidying. And yet, our passion leads to a wonderful, ever-growing collection of ‘stuff,’ doesn’t it? As a seasoned artist and avid thrifter, I’ve spent decades collecting art and craft supplies. My own studio – a once spare bedroom – has seen its share of transformation as I’ve devised systems to manage the exponential growth of materials, especially after adding collage and junk journaling to my bookmaking and painting pursuits. Saving every scrap of paper, thread, and embellishment can quickly become overwhelming, making smart storage an absolute necessity. But necessity, as they say, is the mother of invention, particularly when you’re on a budget!
Above, you can see my daughter Casey’s beautifully coordinated craft room, a prime example of surprisingly affordable organization achieved with smart use of Ikea shelving, drawers, and tables. While some specialized craft storage systems can be outrageously expensive, this setup demonstrates that functionality and aesthetics don’t have to break the bank. In my own working studio, which, to be fair, is often strewn with bits and bobs from my latest projects and rarely looks this pristine, I rely heavily on resourceful solutions. Most of my storage containers are either cherished thrift store finds, clever dollar store purchases, or ingenious DIY projects born out of a desire to make the most of what I have. This truly embodies the spirit of craft room storage on a budget, proving that effective organization is accessible to everyone, even on the tightest budgets. Don’t hesitate to ask friends and family to save common household items like jars and tins for you—it’s free, eco-friendly, and highly effective! I genuinely hope these ideas ignite your imagination and help you transform your own creative space. As our design team member Anna Hollingworth aptly puts it, craft storage is “a bit of a maze that only I can master.” Let’s navigate that maze together and find solutions that work for you. Please share your favorite tips and ideas in the comments below!
Efficient Shelving and Cubby Solutions for Your Craft Space
Versatile Shelves: Your Foundation for Organization
Can a crafter truly have too many shelves in their studio? Absolutely not! Shelves are an indispensable and incredibly budget-friendly craft storage idea, offering both vertical organization and easy access to frequently used supplies. I particularly adore this charming small 3-shelf unit I discovered at a thrift store for just a few dollars. It lives right on my craft table, keeping my most-used acrylic paints perfectly organized and within arm’s reach. This simple addition saves valuable workspace and minimizes rummaging.
Beyond utility, display shelves are a must for artists and crafters to showcase their creations and favorite inspiring items. Here, a thrifted china shelf unit has been beautifully repurposed in my studio, not just to store but also to display my cherished books, button jars, and small paintings. This approach demonstrates how budget-friendly craft room storage ideas can double as decorative elements, adding character and personal touch to your creative environment. Look for sturdy, interesting pieces at second-hand stores that can be easily adapted to your needs, often with just a fresh coat of paint or a little imagination.
Stylish & Affordable: Ikea Storage Systems
Ikea storage solutions are renowned for their clean aesthetics and general affordability, making them a popular choice for crafters seeking functional yet beautiful organization. Their modular designs allow for customization, perfectly adapting to various spaces and storage needs. The real magic happens when you personalize these systems by adding new or vintage baskets, charming boxes, and unique jars to hold your diverse array of craft items, as beautifully illustrated below. These additions not only enhance the visual appeal but also provide tailored compartments for specific supplies, making everything easy to find and access.
Our very own Tanja from the TGF Design Team is a big advocate for Ikea furniture in her studio. She wisely shares, “I have Ikea furniture in the studio. The cupboard for the stamps is a Besta cupboard and then I have Alex with drawers.” This highlights the versatility of combining different Ikea lines, such as the Besta system for larger, enclosed storage and the popular Alex drawers for smaller, more compartmentalized items. Their neutral designs act as a perfect canvas, allowing your colorful craft supplies and unique storage accents to truly shine.
Creative Cubbies: Repurposing for Crafting
Sometimes, the best storage solutions come from the most unexpected places. My wonderfully organized daughter gifted me two shoe cubbies that have proven absolutely perfect for storing my fabric scraps and collage fodder. I cleverly stacked these units and placed them inside my craft room closet, where their design—originally intended for shoes—made them fit perfectly. This efficient use of vertical space keeps these often-bulky materials tidy and out of sight, yet easily accessible. I even recently scored some plastic refrigerator organizers at a discount store, which slide into the cubbies beautifully, adding an extra layer of compartmentalization. What a fantastic and affordable find!
Smart Drawer Systems for Craft Room Organization
Practical & Versatile: Stackable Plastic Drawer Units
My next essential category for budget-friendly craft room storage revolves around drawers. I absolutely adore them and utilize several different sets throughout my studio, each serving a unique purpose. The beauty of plastic drawer units lies in their versatility and affordability. On my work table, I keep a transparent unit that neatly holds my most frequently used cutting tools, craft knives, and spare blades, ensuring they’re always visible and within easy reach. Small, six-inch-wide stackable drawer units are perfect for organizing tiny bits of paper, embellishments, and other collage components that might otherwise get lost. A taller, four-foot unit stands beside my craft table, dedicated to essential bookmaking items like my paper trimmer, scoring board, clamps, and sewing supplies, streamlining my workflow. For bulkier items, large sets of these drawers are stacked in my closet, housing everything from paper punches and rubber stamps to glue guns and paper packs. While these units are relatively inexpensive to purchase new, incredible deals can often be found at yard sales and thrift stores if you’re patient, making them a truly economical choice for any crafter.
Indispensable: The Hardware Drawer Unit
If you’re on a tight budget and can invest in only one storage item for small components, a hardware drawer unit is undoubtedly the best choice. These robust units, originally designed to meticulously organize nails, screws, and bolts, are absolute titans when it comes to storing a myriad of smaller craft items. Think beads, brads, eyelets, charms, jewelry findings, buttons, glitter, small stamps, and even tiny embellishments – all can be neatly categorized and easily accessed within their numerous compartments. They are surprisingly affordable when purchased new, but if you keep an eye out at yard sales, flea markets, and thrift stores, you can often find them for a steal, making them one of the most cost-effective and efficient solutions for any detailed crafter.
Charming & Reusable: Wooden Drawers
There’s a special joy in finding an abandoned wooden drawer at a thrift store. These pieces carry a story and offer incredible potential for craft storage. I frequently use them to hold projects I’m currently working on, keeping all related materials in one place, or as a designated “gathering spot” for future project ideas. Their sturdy construction often allows them to stack nicely, providing flexible storage that can be easily rearranged. Anna Hollingworth, from the TGF Tag Team’s Leximbue Journals, creatively shares how she utilizes an old drawer for storing paper items. She took it a step further by crafting custom dividers from old wooden slats, a brilliant way to segment the space for different paper types or sizes. This approach highlights how simple modifications can transform a basic item into a highly functional and personalized storage solution. You’ll find a quick DIY guide on making similar dividers for cigar boxes later in this article, demonstrating the ease of customization.
Repurposed Charm: Old Sewing Machine Drawers
Vintage sewing machine drawers are another fantastic find for budget-friendly craft room storage, often available at antique shops or flea markets for a modest price. Their unique dimensions make them perfectly sized to hold brushes, pencils, pens, markers, and other taller crafting essentials that often tumble over in wider containers. Beyond tools, I frequently use them to keep batches of my gel-printed, marbled, or dyed papers organized and protected on my table, preventing them from getting creased or damaged. Plus, standard letter-size paper and folders fit surprisingly well in many of these drawers, offering neat and compact storage for important documents or project inspiration. Their vintage appeal also adds a wonderful touch of character and history to any creative space.
Creative Box Solutions for Budget Craft Storage
Elegant & Affordable: Jewelry Boxes
One of my absolute favorite budget-friendly craft room storage ideas involves repurposing old jewelry boxes. These often-overlooked treasures, typically found at thrift stores for a steal, are fantastic for organizing a multitude of smaller craft items. Their numerous drawers and compartments are perfectly designed to separate and protect delicate pieces. I primarily use a large, antique jewelry box to store my collection of metal findings – charms, miniature keys, brads, eyelets, and other tiny embellishments that can easily get lost. The compartmentalization ensures that everything has its designated spot, making it incredibly easy to find exactly what I need without endless rummaging. Beyond their utility, vintage jewelry boxes add a touch of timeless elegance and charm to any crafting space.
Distinctive & Functional: Cigar Boxes
Cigar boxes, particularly vintage wooden ones, are highly sought after by crafters for their unique charm and sturdy construction, making them excellent budget-friendly storage options. Heather from Ruby and Pearl xo, a member of our Tag Team, enthusiastically shares her approach: “I collect vintage cigar boxes and floral boxes from flea markets to keep things tucked away. Things I keep in them are paperclips, stamps, ink pads, ribbon, postcards, and other paper ephemera.” Her strategy highlights their versatility for small, flat items. These boxes are perfect for organizing various small components, ensuring they are protected and easily accessible.
I also maintain a collection of wooden cigar and other vintage wooden boxes that sit neatly on a chest of drawers in my studio. These are exceptionally well-suited for storing clear stamp sets, small stencils, dies, and embossing folders, keeping them flat and organized to prevent damage. A clever tip for crafters on a budget: if you make friends with your local cigar shop, you can often get amazing deals on these empty boxes, sometimes even for free. They are typically happy to give them away, transforming what would be waste into valuable, characterful storage for your creative endeavors. Consider adding simple dividers, as mentioned earlier, to further customize these boxes for even greater organization.
Charming & Custom: Matchboxes
Matchboxes are just too cute to ignore, and they offer a fantastic example of using your crafting skills to create beautiful, custom, and incredibly budget-friendly craft storage! Design Team member Saje shares her enthusiasm: “Matchboxes are probably one of my favorite ‘budget friendly’ storage options. All those little bits and bobs can find a home in a little matchbox instead of taking up real estate on your craft table.” The genius of matchboxes lies in their small size, perfect for those tiny ephemera, beads, buttons, or charms that tend to get lost. Saje continues, “These matchboxes are printable templates that you can find on the internet. Using Kraft stock, simply cut, score, and fold as many as you need on a lazy day while watching your favorite TV shows.” This DIY approach allows for endless customization – choose papers, colors, and embellishments that perfectly match your studio’s aesthetic. Because they’re so small, they fit neatly on the side of your table or can be stacked up on a shelf. Saje even repurposed an old box she used for hair clips, poked a hole through it, lined up her matchboxes inside, and hung it on her wall near her craft table. “Grabbing labels and other bits has never been easier. And if you want to take it a step further, you can label them as well,” she advises, emphasizing the importance of clear labeling for optimal organization.
Robust & Accessible: Wooden Crates and Boxes
Wooden crates, especially wine crates, are incredibly versatile and affordable storage solutions that add a rustic charm to any craft studio. I love to use them for organizing larger items like paper and books. Anna beautifully demonstrates how her decorative papers stand upright in a wooden crate, allowing for easy access and excellent visibility of each sheet – a vast improvement over stacks that hide treasures. Crates are often truly affordable for your craft room budget; some can even be acquired for free from local liquor stores or grocery stores if you simply ask. Their open structure makes them ideal for bulkier items or for grouping themed collections.
Tanja further exemplifies clever wooden box usage by building custom rubber stamp storage boxes from wooden strips, perfectly sized to match the height of her stamps. She notes, “I have a lot of stamps. I mounted the stamps in the wooden boxes and they are clear stamps or rubber stamps. The cupboard for the stamp storage is a Besta from Ikea.” This bespoke solution ensures that her extensive stamp collection is neatly contained and protected, preventing damage and making selection a breeze. Combining custom inserts with affordable Ikea furniture demonstrates a thoughtful and effective approach to maximizing storage in a creative space.
Unique Finds: Piano Roll Boxes
This idea is truly ingenious and ranks as one of the best finds for unique, budget-friendly craft storage! Sharon Hoerth from the Design and Tag Team enthusiastically shares this awesome tip: “One of my favorite storage ideas is to use piano roll boxes for washi tape storage. Okay, I’m a little embarrassed by the number of rolls I have, but these boxes keep them in order and act as mini drawers that I can pull out.” The cylindrical shape of these vintage boxes is perfectly suited for holding numerous rolls of washi tape, keeping them neatly contained and preventing them from unraveling or getting dusty. These fascinating relics can often be found for an incredibly affordable price at flea markets, antique stores, or online. As an added bonus, the vintage piano roll paper itself can often be repurposed in your art projects, making this a true win-win for crafters who appreciate both functionality and historical charm!
Modern & Transparent: Fridge Boxes
Modern transparent fridge boxes offer an unexpectedly effective and highly functional solution for craft room storage. While designed for food organization, their clear construction and stackable nature make them ideal for crafters who need to quickly identify and access their supplies. Tanja, from our Design Team, specifically uses these transparent fridge boxes to store both her clear stamps and larger rubber stamps. The transparency is a game-changer, eliminating the need to rummage through opaque containers. You can instantly see your entire collection, which saves time and sparks creativity. These boxes are also easy to clean and can be found at various price points, often quite affordably, at discount stores or home goods retailers, proving that innovative storage can come from everyday items.
Innovative Packaging as Budget-Friendly Craft Room Storage
What could be more ingenious and budget-conscious than recycling everyday packaging into highly functional craft room storage? This approach exemplifies creativity and sustainability. Our clever Design Team member Saje shares her expertise: “There are so many ways to use packaging from different products we purchase online.” It’s all about seeing potential in what others consider waste.
- Upcycled Trays: Saje explains her method for creating custom project trays: “Using the box my iPad and laptop came in, I’ve made trays to hold all the supplies I need for when I’m making a project. Adding some wallpaper or wrapping paper to make them look a little prettier, I add all the supplies I’m about to use in my project into it and place it on my craft table at arm’s length for a quick grab.” This simple DIY transforms sturdy electronics boxes into personalized, portable project organizers, keeping all necessary tools and materials neatly contained and accessible, preventing clutter on your main workspace.
- Decorative Amazon Boxes: “Amazon boxes are by far the holy grail of budget friendly storage options,” Saje affirms. “It doesn’t get any cheaper than gluing on some paper to the box, decorating it, adding a label, and using it to store your supplies in. Nifty, quick, and affordable.” These ubiquitous cardboard boxes, often accumulated from online shopping, are a free and endlessly customizable resource. With a bit of decorative paper – and The Graphics Fairy offers some wondrous options! – and a clear label, they transform into attractive and organized homes for various craft supplies, from larger paper pads to fabric scraps.
Charming Tins and Jars for Craft Organization
Classic & Clear: Canning Jars
Canning jars are a classic, versatile, and incredibly affordable choice for craft room storage, cherished by crafters for their transparency and durability. Their clear glass allows for immediate identification of contents, saving valuable time searching for specific items. These jars are perfectly suited for storing an array of small, loose craft supplies such as buttons of all shapes and sizes, colorful collections of colored pencils, various paintbrushes, or even small spools of thread. Arranged neatly on shelves or a countertop, canning jars not only organize your supplies but also add a delightful, rustic aesthetic to your creative space, making your supplies part of the decor.
Eclectic Charm: Small Glass Jars and Apothecary Jars
My studio is filled with a delightful collection of various small glass jars and antique apothecary jars, a testament to my love for transparent storage. The best part about using jars is the immediate visual access they provide to your craft items – no more guessing what’s inside! Below, you can see a charming assortment of my personal favorites, including elegant apothecary jars, petite milk bottles, and smaller canning jars, each holding different treasures. These varied containers not only serve a functional purpose but also contribute significantly to the aesthetic appeal of the space, turning everyday supplies into decorative elements.
Kate Stevens from the TGF Tag Team, shares a similar passion for these small treasures: “If I find cheap little glass jars or old tins at a thrift store I buy them and use them to store little things like paper clips, safety pins, etc.” This reinforces the excellent value of thrifting for such items. Saje further expands on this, highlighting the eco-friendly aspect: “Jars are a great way to store pretty much anything you can find that fits into them. If you have some jars from an old candle or the jam jar that’s almost empty, just a quick rinse with dish soap and water and you have yourself some extra storage. Not to mention they look pretty lined up on a shelf.” Reusing jars from food products or old candles is not only free but also a wonderfully sustainable practice, allowing you to create beautiful and organized storage with minimal effort and no cost.
Festive & Functional: Flower and Cookie Tins
Flower and cookie tins, often overlooked once their original contents are gone, are fantastic budget-friendly finds for craft room storage. They come in a delightful array of sizes, shapes, and often feature charming decorative patterns, adding a touch of vintage appeal or festive cheer to your studio. These tins are ideal for storing a variety of small to medium-sized craft items, from ribbons and buttons to glues and larger stamps. Their opaque nature makes them perfect for concealing supplies you don’t want on display, maintaining a tidy aesthetic. The image below showcases how beautifully these tins can organize delicate items like lace, keeping them protected from dust and tangles.
Cookie tins, in particular, are an ideal place to store things in a small space due to their stackability and often compact design. They make great holders for clips, clamps, small tools, or even collections of themed ephemera. A fantastic tip for acquiring these: around the holidays, they are usually on sale, offering a perfect opportunity to stock up. Plus, you get the enjoyable bonus of eating some delicious cookies while you’re at it – a sweet incentive for organizing your craft space!
Elegant Repurposing: Old Dishes and Serving Pieces
For those who appreciate vintage charm and unique aesthetics, collecting old dishes, china, and glassware from thrift stores is an excellent strategy for budget-friendly craft room storage. These beautiful pieces are often available for a mere pittance, offering incredible value and a distinct personality that modern storage solutions simply can’t replicate. I absolutely love to incorporate unusual or one-of-a-kind vintage items with great design onto my dry art table. They elevate the space, transforming practical storage into a delightful display. The tall pitcher in the back, for example, is not just a container; it gracefully holds my pencils, making them both accessible and a charming focal point. These elegant repurposing ideas are incredibly gentle on the craft room storage budget while adding undeniable character to your creative environment. Here are just a few examples of how these treasures can bring both beauty and function to your studio:
Antique cups and pitchers, with their varied shapes and sizes, are perfect for keeping markers, pens, pencils, paintbrushes, and other frequently used tools neatly upright and within easy reach. Beyond their utility, these beautiful pieces evoke a sense of nostalgia and artistry. Seeing them arranged on my desk invariably brings a smile to my face, adding a touch of personal joy to my daily creative work. They prove that practical storage doesn’t have to be sterile; it can be an extension of your artistic sensibility.
Vintage Travel: Suitcases for Storage
Old suitcases, often found at flea markets or garage sales for a song, offer a wonderfully charming and spacious solution for craft room storage, particularly for bulkier items. Their robust construction and often beautiful vintage aesthetics make them much more than just storage containers – they’re decorative pieces in themselves. Anna from Leximbue Journals shares a perfect example: “This old suitcase is filled with fabrics and leather scraps for my journals. And my smaller box with the more precious items.” Suitcases are ideal for keeping textiles like fabric scraps, ribbons, yarn, or leather pieces neatly organized and protected from dust. Their ability to close also means they can be tucked away under a table or bed, making them perfect for those with limited space who need to keep their craft room tidy between projects. Imagine the stories these suitcases could tell, now continuing their journey as part of your creative adventure!
Modern & Practical: Plastic Storage Containers
While repurposed and vintage items offer unique charm, there’s also a plethora of purpose-built plastic containers on the market that excel in functionality and affordability for craft storage. These modern solutions are designed for efficiency, often featuring clear construction, stackability, and various compartment options. Below, I’ll highlight three of my personal favorites that have proven indispensable in keeping my studio organized and accessible.
Specialized for Scrapbook Paper
One of my most exciting finds was discovering plastic storage boxes specifically designed to hold 12″ x 12″ scrapbook paper. Any crafter working with scrapbook paper knows the challenge of keeping those large sheets flat, protected, and easily browsable. These specialized containers are a game-changer! They stack perfectly, creating a neat tower of paper without bending or damaging the edges. This prevents wrinkles, tears, and keeps your valuable paper collection in pristine condition, ready for your next project. Finding dedicated storage like this truly streamlines the creative process and protects your investment in supplies.
Ingenious Repurposing: Makeup Storage Units
I always make a point to pick up makeup storage units whenever I find them at thrift stores or on sale, recognizing their incredible potential for craft organization. These units are typically designed with numerous compartments and tiered levels, making them surprisingly perfect for holding a variety of smaller craft supplies. I use them for everything from bottles of alcohol inks and homemade spray stains to glitter pots, beads, and even small tools. Their segmented design ensures that each item has its own place, preventing spills and making it easy to see and grab exactly what you need without rummaging. It’s a prime example of thinking outside the box to find highly functional and budget-friendly storage solutions.
Our Design Team member, Tanja, also cleverly utilizes Bento Boxes – those versatile, compartmentalized lunch containers – to store small paper items. Their divided sections are excellent for separating different types of ephemera, small die-cuts, or themed paper scraps, ensuring that tiny pieces don’t get mixed up. This innovative use of everyday containers highlights how thinking beyond conventional craft storage can yield highly effective and economical organization solutions, proving that a little ingenuity goes a long way in making your craft space more functional.
Mobile & Upcycled: Rolling File Carts and More
Mobility in a craft room can be a game-changer, especially for those who need to shift their workspace or bring supplies closer to their current project. Dody Williams from the Design Team has mastered this with her clever setup. She enthusiastically shares, “I use a rolling file cart normally used for office files (spray painted it white) and place a large wire basket in the top opening and two small baskets beneath. I keep it next to me at my work table filled with paper I am using at the time. I love how I can roll it out of the way and all around the room.” This adaptable solution keeps frequently used papers and tools right where you need them, then neatly tucks away when not in use. Dody’s resourcefulness extends further: “I also foraged a bakers rack left as rubbish on the street and filled it with all sorts of papers and small wire baskets filled with supplies.” Her experience perfectly illustrates how discarded items can be transformed into invaluable, budget-friendly storage with a little vision and elbow grease, proving that one person’s trash can indeed be a crafter’s treasure!
Artistic Wall Storage: Framed Solutions
When floor and shelf space are at a premium, looking to your walls for storage solutions can unlock immense potential. Anna, once again, shares a truly delightful and visually appealing way to store laces and trims: using an old window frame. This is a big-time craft room storage idea on a budget, combining functionality with artistic display. By wrapping various laces, ribbons, and trims around the divisions of the old window frame, she creates a beautiful, ever-changing textile artwork. Not only does this keep delicate items neatly organized and tangle-free, but it also transforms them into an inspiring piece of wall art. It’s an elegant solution that maximizes vertical space, allows for easy selection of materials, and adds a unique, vintage charm to any creative studio, proving that organization can be both practical and beautiful.
Vertical Efficiency: Pegboard and Slatboard Systems
Pegboards and slatboards are incredibly effective vertical storage solutions that are a favorite among crafters for their adaptability and space-saving qualities. These systems transform an ordinary wall into a dynamic storage canvas, allowing you to hang tools and supplies within easy reach. Jane Chipp of the Tag Team enthusiastically shares a brilliant way to store paints: “The best storage solution I’ve ever found is this peg board type thing that I bought from Ikea. I put small bulldog clips and hooks on all of my acrylic paint tubes and they hang on there. Makes it so easy to see what colours I have without rummaging through boxes.” This method is a game-changer for paint organization, ensuring that every color is visible at a glance, eliminating duplicates, and speeding up color selection. With a variety of hooks, baskets, and shelves designed to attach to pegboards, you can customize your wall storage to perfectly accommodate brushes, scissors, rulers, and a multitude of other crafting essentials, making it a highly efficient and budget-friendly addition to any craft room.
Engaging DIY Storage Projects with Printables
There’s immense satisfaction in creating your own craft room storage, especially when it’s budget-friendly and perfectly tailored to your needs. I absolutely adore designing DIY projects that empower crafters to organize their spaces beautifully. Saje was the brilliant inspiration behind my latest printable design, offering an ingenious solution for paper scraps.
Custom Mini File Folders & Accordion Files
Saje shared her clever idea for managing those inevitable smaller paper pieces: “These file folders are a great stash idea. I made mine using Kraft stock, hinged together with accordion folds. It stands upright on my craft table in a long rectangle container.” This system is ideal for keeping those precious scraps of paper, ephemera, or mixed-media elements neatly organized and instantly accessible. She continues, “If you’re always cutting up TGF paper and need a designated spot for your pieces while you’re putting together a project, then these work perfectly.”
Inspired by Saje’s ingenuity, I’ve designed a printable PDF for a Set of 3 Mini File Folders specifically for you to create your own accordion file, just like the one pictured below. Each folder is designed to fit on standard letter-size (8-1/2″ x 11″) cardstock, making them easy to print and assemble. The best thing about these printable folders is their adaptability: they can be effortlessly resized to fit various containers or specific storage needs. This DIY project is a fantastic way to personalize your organization, making sure every small piece of your creative journey has a designated, tidy home.
