Discovering Inspiration: The Genesis of the Artist’s Bundles
Hello, lovelies! I’m Danielle from Evelyn & Sage Ave., and it’s an absolute pleasure to be back, sharing another design team project for The Graphics Fairy. My creative process often begins with a cherished ritual: settling down with a warm cup of tea and leisurely browsing the vast and inspiring collection on The Graphics Fairy Premium site. It’s a treasure trove where I’m always spoilt for choice, and inspiration usually sparks from a single captivating image. This time was no different. A truly beautiful portrait of a young lady, gracing the digital pages with her soft, enigmatic smile, immediately stole my heart. I knew, without a doubt, that she had to be the centerpiece of my next creation.
She now holds pride of place on the cover of one of the four unique journals I’ve crafted for this project, which I’ve affectionately named ‘The Artist Bundles.’ This collection embodies a deep appreciation for vintage art, feminine grace, and the boundless possibilities of creative expression within junk journaling.
The Allure of the ‘Little Women’ Bundle
My delight only grew when I discovered that this captivating lady was part of a larger collection called ‘Little Women.’ This bundle revealed three additional beautiful portraits, each possessing its own distinct charm and character. The decision to use all four was instantaneous and undeniable; it would have been a true shame to separate such exquisite subjects! To me, these portraits were not just pretty faces; they were miniature works of art deserving of the spotlight. Therefore, I dedicated each of the four journal covers to one of these magnificent women, allowing their unique personalities to shine through and dictate the individual essence of each journal.
From Landscapes to Portraits: An Evolving Artistic Vision
Initially, my creative exploration led me down a path inspired by classic oil paintings, particularly given the stunning abundance of floral landscape imagery available on The Graphics Fairy. I printed several of my favorite painted landscapes and quaint cottage fronts, envisioning a harmonious blend. However, as I laid them out, I realized I had two distinct, equally gorgeous ideas that weren’t quite aligning. It felt like an “overload of gorgeousness,” if such a thing exists! Rather than abandon the artistic element, I decided to shift its role. Instead of having oil paintings as an undertone, I realized the ‘artsy’ feel could be brought to the forefront through other means.
This realization prompted me to refine my image selection, allowing the lovely portraits to truly take center stage. This pivotal decision propelled me to introduce the overarching ‘artsy’ theme in more subtle, integrated ways throughout the journals, ensuring the portraits remained the undeniable heroes of each cover.
Framing Vintage Beauty: The Cabinet Card Technique
The exquisite ‘Little Women’ portraits deserved a beautiful frame, and one of my absolute favorite pieces of vintage ephemera to create are cabinet cards. These historical photographic mounts inherently add an air of elegance and bygone charm. Naturally, like a child let loose in a candy store, I began to fill my digital “candy bag” with every cabinet card image I could find on The Graphics Fairy website – what an absolute treat! The selection process was challenging, as there were so many stunning options. After a delightful struggle, I narrowed down my choices to just four perfect cabinet card frames, knowing that any pre-existing images within these frames could be easily covered or swapped out with my chosen portraits.
I digitally layered each ‘Little Women’ portrait onto its best-suited frame, printing them at various sizes to perfectly match the journal cover bases I had prepared. For those who prefer a more tactile approach, fear not! You can just as easily print your desired frames and portraits separately and collage them by hand – it’s a piece of cake! Once each portrait was backed onto sturdy cardstock, I meticulously distressed the edges to enhance their vintage appeal. For fantastic, easy distressing tips, I highly recommend checking out Jack Ravi’s lovely tutorial, which can be found in The Graphics Fairy ‘Handcraft Tutorials’ section of the Premium Website. And if you’re eager to explore the world of digital collage, The Graphics Fairy has you covered there too, with excellent resources in the ‘Digital Tutorials’ section. These tutorials are invaluable for both beginners and experienced crafters looking to refine their techniques in junk journal making and beyond.
Building Layers and Texture: The Foundation of Junk Journal Art
To thoughtfully mount these beautifully framed portraits, I carefully selected an assortment of natural-toned papers from my extensive scrap bin. My intention was to deliberately avoid bright colors and busy patterns, ensuring that the minimalist aesthetic I envisioned for these ‘Artist’s Bundle’ journals remained consistent. The goal was to let the vintage portraits truly sing, without any competing elements. However, to prevent the covers from appearing flat or uninteresting, I strategically incorporated a variety of textures and paper types. This subtle yet effective approach allowed me to create visual and tactile interest, adding depth and a tactile richness to the journal covers without detracting from the central focus. It’s a wonderful way to showcase how different materials, even in neutral shades, can contribute significantly to the overall aesthetic of a handmade journal.
The Charm of Hardware: Adding Depth and Theme
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my junk journaling journey, it’s that I’ve never met a journal I didn’t want to enhance with hardware! The introduction of tangible elements like hardware is crucial for achieving both depth and texture, which are key components in creating a truly engaging junk journal. Texture, of course, can manifest in many forms; simply scrunching and creasing your paper edges can instantly add a compelling textural interest – who knew lining paper could look so good? But for true depth, I often turn to hardware. There’s something profoundly satisfying about seeing everyday elements repurposed and integrated into journal making; it just gives me the best creative feels! And what better way to accent my overarching ‘artsy’ theme than by incorporating some beautifully hand-distressed paintbrushes? These small, deliberate details not only add a tactile dimension but also visually communicate the artistic essence of the ‘Artist’s Bundle’ collection, inviting touch and further exploration.
A Sanctuary for Creativity: Embracing Experimental Journaling
My vision for these journals was to create a true sanctuary for the experimental soul – a space where creative juices can flow freely, fostering all that wonderful excitement we crafters and journalers live for. I designed them to serve as a natural canvas, beckoning artists and enthusiasts to explore mixed media, spontaneous mark-making, detailed stamping, expressive painting, or simply revel in the beauty of experimental “mess.” This is a place crafted specifically to banish fear and encourage trying something entirely new, without judgment or expectation. Each page invites you to push boundaries, to discover new techniques, and to celebrate the unique journey of your artistic expression. It’s an open invitation to play, to explore, and to let your imagination take flight within the vintage charm of these handmade journals.
Crafting Delight: Faux Glassine Goodie Bags
Who doesn’t love a thoughtful bag of goodies? With this sentiment in mind, I set out to create charming faux glassine bags, specifically designed to be filled with an assortment of materials. These little bundles would provide a perfect starting point for anyone ready to dive into their experimental journal. And what better imagery to use for these bags than beautiful vintage wallpaper prints? I utilized stunning selections from both the ‘Fall Wallpapers’ and ‘Tattered Papers’ kits, printing them onto tracing paper to achieve that delicate, translucent quality reminiscent of genuine glassine. For those interested in mastering this technique, Heather of Ruby&Pearlxo, a legendary former member of The Graphics Fairy design team, has a tutorial that truly “broke the internet.” Her step-by-step demonstration on how to create these delightful faux glassine bags is an invaluable resource for any crafter looking to add a touch of vintage elegance to their projects.
Harmonizing Themes: Images from ‘The Artist’ Bundle
To perfectly accompany these ‘Artist’s Bundle Junk Journals,’ I needed look no further than the incredible imagery found within ‘The Artist’ bundle itself. This collection is a treasure trove of art-themed vintage ephemera. From the sweetest cabinet card featuring a little girl diligently painting at her easel, to the beautifully rendered Winsor & Newton Colour Chart, every image seamlessly married with the overarching artistic theme of these journals. These carefully selected pieces not only reinforce the creative spirit but also add an authentic touch of art history, making each journal a truly cohesive and inspiring work. They serve to deepen the narrative, inviting the owner to connect with the historical context of art and creativity.
A Splash of Color: Vintage Watercolor Inspiration
The exquisite color swatch papers within ‘The Artist’ bundle provided a wonderful spark of inspiration, prompting me to retrieve my long-forgotten Winsor & Newton watercolor palette from my university days. It was a joyful reunion with old supplies! I spent a delightful afternoon playing with paints, and the result was a collection of the cutest watercolor samples. Each sample was carefully chosen to mirror the subtle yet rich colors present in the ‘Little Women’ portraits, creating a beautiful visual dialogue between the journals’ covers and their internal elements. I applied these watercolors to some vintage lining paper, which, to my delight, absorbed the color perfectly. Lining paper is truly a fantastic and often underestimated material to use in any junk journal making project; its versatility and unique texture make it an invaluable asset for a myriad of creative applications, from painting backgrounds to creating delicate ephemera.
Your Journey into Creativity Begins Here
I’ll leave it to you to guess which one of these beautiful ‘Little Women’ portraits first ignited my creative spark, setting me off on this wonderful journey that culminated in four unique junk journals, each eagerly awaiting to be filled with your own boundless creativity.
