4 Garage Upgrades That Boosted Curb Appeal

Sometimes the smallest updates make the biggest difference. This week Robert and I tackled a few quick garage curb appeal projects that each took an afternoon or less, and together they transformed the whole area.

If you’ve followed along, you might remember this part of the house already got a refresh years ago.

About nine years ago we limewashed the brick and painted the garage door Behr Cracked Pepper, which immediately made the exterior feel fresher and more intentional.

Lately I kept thinking the space was good, but it could be great. It turns out all it needed were a few thoughtful finishing touches.

DIY Copper Lantern Fixtures

First: lighting. We replaced the black fixtures with traditional copper lantern wall lights on each side of the garage door, and I love the result.

Copper brings a timeless, well-worn look that gives a home character. It reads as curated and cared for rather than overly modern or temporary.

I recently tested different copper spray paints to find the most realistic finish so the fixtures would look authentic. I’m also thinking about adding flickering flame bulbs for a classic gas-lantern effect.

Star Jasmine Trellis

Next: vines. I’ve wanted lush greenery around the garage door for a long time, so we planted star jasmine on both sides and installed wooden lattice for it to climb.

Star jasmine takes time to fill in, so this is a slow-blooming improvement rather than instant gratification. Still, I can already picture it a year or two from now—fragrant, draping vines that soften the garage’s edges and add a welcoming, lived-in feel.

Patience will pay off here; the vine will turn a practical space into a warm, inviting focal point.

Trash Can Hiding Panels

Then there’s the practical but not-pretty issue: the trash can. It sat by the garage in plain sight, which bothered me every time I pulled in.

We installed no-dig lattice panels to screen the cans from the street. No heavy work, no cement—just an easy, effective privacy screen that keeps the view clean without a big project.

Carriage Style Garage Door Hardware

The final detail was a magnetized carriage-door-style hardware kit with handles and hinges. These magnetic pieces clip on in minutes—no drilling required—and instantly give the garage door a custom, high-end look.

This is one of those deceptively simple upgrades that photographs like an expensive renovation but is quick and affordable in reality.

Curb appeal doesn’t always demand dramatic renovation. Sometimes a handful of thoughtful details—copper lanterns, climbing plants, lattice screens, and clip-on hardware—are all it takes to move a space from nice to polished.
