Transforming a compact en suite bathroom into a modern vintage sanctuary, inspired by the timeless elegance of Art Deco, the glamour of Hollywood Regency, and contemporary design principles.

The Journey to Our Dream Bathroom: From Outdated to Opulent
There are some moments in life that exceed all expectations, and for us, the completion of our en suite modern vintage bathroom remodel is definitely one of them. What started as an unforeseen challenge transformed into the most rewarding renovation project, culminating in a space that feels both luxurious and intimately ours. We envisioned a bathroom that would blend timeless elegance with modern comfort, and the result is nothing short of breathtaking – a true testament to thoughtful design and resourceful execution.
Before the Transformation: A Look Back at Our Bathroom’s Humble Beginnings
When we first moved into our colonial home over four years ago, this en suite bathroom presented a common dilemma for homeowners: functionality without flair. It was a space that served its purpose but lacked any distinct character or aesthetic appeal. For those who followed our journey from the start, you might recall its original state, which was, to put it mildly, quite dated.

A Temporary Refresh: Bridging the Gap with Smart Updates
Knowing a full renovation was a long-term goal, we opted for a temporary refresh a year and a half ago. This interim solution involved strategically painting the walls and cabinetry, introducing stylish peel-and-stick wallpaper, and cleverly covering the existing, less-than-ideal tile with sheet vinyl flooring. These updates were designed to make the space more tolerable and aesthetically pleasing until we could embark on the comprehensive remodel we truly desired. It was a practical, budget-friendly stopgap, allowing us time to save and plan for the ultimate transformation, giving the bathroom a much-needed facelift without a major overhaul.

The Unexpected Catalyst: Water Damage Accelerates Our Renovation Plans
Life, as it often does, threw an unexpected curveball. Our carefully laid plans for a future renovation were dramatically accelerated by significant water damage, caused by an unfortunate HVAC leak. This sudden turn of events pushed our timeline forward by about a year, turning a planned future project into an immediate necessity. While initially stressful, this unforeseen circumstance ultimately became the catalyst for creating our dream bathroom sooner than imagined. It forced us to dive headfirst into design decisions, but the pressure ultimately yielded spectacular results.

Unveiling Our Modern Vintage En Suite Bathroom Remodel Tour
Designing this bathroom under pressure was a whirlwind, but sometimes the greatest creative breakthroughs happen when facing tight deadlines. My initial goal was clear: to infuse the space with a sophisticated vintage feel while integrating all the modern conveniences and ample storage we needed. The water damage added a layer of urgency, but in hindsight, this intense period of design has gifted us with what is now, unequivocally, my favorite room in the house.
The primary challenge was transforming a rather small footprint without physically expanding it. The aim was to create an illusion of spaciousness, incorporating timeless finishes that would withstand fleeting trends for decades to come. Our vision was an intricate blend of design eras: the roaring twenties (Art Deco elegance), the 1960s (a thoughtful nod to our home’s origin), and a touch of French, Italian, and bold Hollywood Regency glamour. Successfully weaving these diverse influences together in a cohesive and harmonious manner, especially within a compact en suite, was a true design triumph, proving that small spaces can indeed be grand.

A Statement of Sophistication: The Scalloped Marble Backsplash
From the outset, one element I was absolutely unwavering about was a scalloped marble backsplash. This specific detail captured my imagination and became a cornerstone of the bathroom’s elegant design. To achieve this luxurious look without overshooting our budget, we wisely opted for a marble remnant from a local fabricator. This choice not only provided significant cost savings but also allowed us to utilize a high-quality material that might otherwise have been out of reach, making bespoke luxury more attainable for our en suite bathroom remodel.
A key concern with natural marble is its susceptibility to etching and staining. To address this, our fabricator applied a special UV treatment, offering enhanced protection and peace of mind. This thoughtful detail ensures the beauty of the marble will endure, making it a practical choice for a high-traffic area like a bathroom countertop. The unique scalloped edge, combined with the pristine beauty of the marble, instantly elevates the space, creating a focal point that exudes upscale charm and bespoke craftsmanship, seamlessly blending vintage appeal with modern durability.

Maximizing the use of the marble remnant was a practical decision that added to the cohesive and luxurious feel of the entire vanity area. Every inch of this beautiful material contributes to the overall sense of refined elegance, demonstrating how resourcefulness can lead to high-end results in a modern vintage bathroom.
Anchoring the Design: The Warmth of a Classic Wood Vanity
In a bathroom dominated by crisp white walls and bright porcelain tile, it was crucial to introduce elements that would prevent the space from feeling cold or sterile. A beautiful wood vanity was the perfect solution, instantly infusing much-needed warmth, natural texture, and organic appeal into the design. The choice of a mid-toned wood ensures a timeless aesthetic, providing a grounding force against the lighter palette and seamlessly integrating with both modern and vintage sensibilities. This piece serves as a sophisticated anchor in our modern vintage bathroom design.

To further enhance this inviting warmth, we selected brushed gold hardware and fixtures. The subtle gleam of gold against the wood and marble adds a layer of quiet luxury without being ostentatious. Specifically, the vanity knobs were a carefully chosen detail, lending an interesting, almost sculptural quality to the piece. Their distinctive design subtly echoes the geometric patterns and streamlined forms characteristic of the Art Deco era, perfectly aligning with our desire to infuse a touch of 1920s glamour into the space, creating a cohesive modern vintage aesthetic.

These exquisite knobs serve as small jewels, adding sophistication and visual interest that harmonizes beautifully with the overarching modern vintage theme. They prove that even the smallest details can have a profound impact on the overall aesthetic and feel of a room, transforming a functional piece into a design statement.

The Luxe Retreat: Our Enclosed Small Shower
One of the most significant design hurdles in this compact bathroom was creating a shower that felt luxurious without requiring a grand footprint. The perception is often that a large shower equates to luxury, but through extensive research and feedback from our community, we discovered a surprising truth: many prefer smaller, enclosed showers for their superior warmth and comfort. Having experienced it firsthand, I can now wholeheartedly agree. Our compact shower transforms into a steamy, spa-like cocoon, offering a truly cozy and inviting bathing experience that feels incredibly indulgent, making it a highlight of our modern vintage bathroom remodel.

The transformation here is truly remarkable, especially considering we didn’t expand the footprint by a single inch. We simply removed the old surround, creating a dedicated shower room, and meticulously tiled it from floor to ceiling with marble-look porcelain. The choice of a clear glass shower door was pivotal in maintaining an open and airy feel, ensuring the small space doesn’t feel confined but rather bright and expansive. This design trick allows natural light to flow freely, making both the shower and the entire bathroom appear larger and more inviting, a key strategy for any small bathroom remodel.

A Touch of Glamour: The Custom Shower Door Knob
Among the many exquisite details in our modern vintage bathroom, the custom shower door knob stands out as a personal favorite. Inspired by the sophisticated designs of Katie Martinez Design and Chris Loves Julia, this glass knob exudes an undeniable elegance that elevates the entire shower experience. It’s a small but powerful design statement, proving that thoughtful, high-quality accents can transform a functional element into a piece of art, contributing significantly to the Hollywood Regency feel.

Our contractor truly worked magic to integrate this feature seamlessly, ensuring it not only functions flawlessly but also complements the overall modern vintage aesthetic. It’s these bespoke touches that make the bathroom feel truly unique and incredibly special, reflecting meticulous attention to detail.

Smart Storage Solutions: Functional and Discrete Shower Niches
Designing the shower niches was a decision made quickly during the initial, high-pressure phase of the renovation, but I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. We opted for a “his and hers” configuration, providing individual soap shelves for optimal organization and personal space. A particularly thoughtful addition was a dedicated leg shaving niche, strategically placed a foot from the floor. This seemingly small detail makes a significant difference in daily comfort and usability within our en suite bathroom.
To maintain a clean and uncluttered visual aesthetic, the niches were positioned on the wall to the right of the shower door, ensuring they are not immediately visible upon entering the bathroom. This clever placement helps the shower area feel more expansive and streamlined, avoiding any visual interruptions and contributing to the overall sense of openness. As an additional layer of thoughtful design, we extended the hexagon tile from the shower floor onto the back of the niches, creating a subtle yet cohesive design element that ties the entire space together and reinforces the modern vintage aesthetic.

The Art of Illusion: Marble Look Porcelain Tile for Timeless Elegance
For the primary surfaces of our bathroom, we were captivated by the timeless beauty of white marble but deterred by its high maintenance and cost. Our search led us to the absolute perfect solution: polished marble-look porcelain tile from Alexander James. This innovative material allowed us to achieve the desired classic, bright, and luxurious aesthetic without the practical drawbacks of natural stone, making it an ideal choice for our modern vintage en suite bathroom.
The benefits of choosing marble-look porcelain are numerous. It’s incredibly durable, easy to clean, and significantly more budget-friendly both in material cost and installation compared to real marble. What’s truly impressive is its convincing resemblance to genuine marble; the veining patterns are so realistic that it’s challenging to differentiate it from the real thing. This choice was not just economical but also practical, ensuring our bathroom retains its pristine appearance with minimal effort, offering both beauty and resilience.

To further enhance the perception of space in our small shower, we utilized large 12×24 Statuary polished tiles for the shower walls. The larger format minimizes grout lines, contributing to a seamless and expansive visual effect that makes the area feel more open. For the shower floor, we introduced hexagon Statuary polished tiles. This shape not only subtly hints at the 1920s Art Deco influence but also harmonizes with hexagon tiles used in other bathrooms throughout our home, creating a cohesive design flow across different spaces.
The main bathroom floor features a sophisticated herringbone pattern created with 4×16 Statuary polished tiles. This classic pattern adds intricate detail and visual interest, grounding the design. To complete the look and ensure longevity, all tiling was finished with Timberwolf gray grout. This darker grout choice not only beautifully defines the patterns but also offers practical benefits, showing less dirt and requiring less maintenance over time, making it ideal for a busy en suite bathroom and ensuring its timeless appeal.

Finishing Touches: Elegant Bathroom Faucets and Fixtures
The choice of fixtures played a crucial role in achieving the desired modern vintage aesthetic. We absolutely adore the Delta Champagne Bronze finish. Unlike some brighter golds, this muted, brushed gold offers a sophisticated warmth that is both luxurious and understated, perfectly complementing the overall color palette and design theme of our en suite bathroom.

For the shower, we selected the modern Trinsic shower faucet kit, appreciating its clean lines and minimalist profile. Practicality was also a key consideration, which is why we included a handheld sprayer and slide bar. This feature makes cleaning the tile and glass door effortlessly easy, a thoughtful addition that enhances daily usability and maintenance. A shower without a sprayer always feels incomplete, so this was a must-have for us, perfectly merging modern convenience with our vintage design.
The wall-mounted Trinsic sink faucets are another highlight, embodying sleek simplicity and sophisticated design. Beyond their stunning appearance, they offer a significant functional advantage: by being mounted on the wall, they prevent water from pooling on the countertop, a common issue with standard deck-mounted faucets. This detail keeps the vanity area looking pristine and minimizes cleaning, seamlessly blending form and function to maintain the pristine look of our modern vintage bathroom.

Reflecting Elegance: Venetian Mirrors
Our stunning Venetian mirrors were a delightful, unexpected discovery that perfectly encapsulated our design vision. Initially, we had planned for black arched mirrors, but space constraints and limited availability of tall, slim options led us to explore other avenues. It was then that these exquisite Venetian mirrors entered our design process, and it was love at first sight, solidifying their place in our modern vintage bathroom remodel.
These mirrors are far more than just reflective surfaces; they are statement pieces that dramatically enhance the sense of space, making the room feel significantly larger and brighter. Their intricate detailing and classic European flair instantly evoke the glamour of Hollywood Regency, adding another layer of sophistication and bespoke charm to the en suite bathroom. This “happy accident” turned out to be one of the most impactful design choices, beautifully tying together the various vintage influences and reflecting the overall elegance of the space.

Illuminating Beauty: Thoughtful Bathroom Lighting
Effective lighting is paramount in a bathroom, especially for tasks like applying makeup, and we carefully selected fixtures to create both functionality and ambiance. Our choice of designer-dupe shaded sconces provides a soft, diffused light that is ideal for illuminating the face without harsh shadows. Placing individual sconces on either side of the mirrors, rather than above, ensures even, flattering illumination, a crucial detail for any vanity area in a modern vintage bathroom.

Within the shower area, we opted for a canned light fan. This integrated solution provides discrete yet powerful illumination while effectively managing humidity. Its seamless design ensures it blends into the ceiling, maintaining the clean lines and sophisticated feel of the shower space without any visual clutter, embodying practical elegance for our en suite bathroom remodel.

Architectural Charm: Elegant Bathroom Wall Molding
To infuse the walls with character and depth without resorting to expensive tile installations, we turned to our beloved picture frame molding. This decorative element, which we’ve successfully incorporated into other areas of our home like Regan’s bedroom and our dining room, was the perfect budget-friendly solution for adding architectural interest to the otherwise bare walls of our en suite. It offers a sophisticated, custom-built look without the fuss or cost associated with more elaborate wall treatments, embodying the vintage aspect of our modern vintage bathroom.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the wall molding serves a practical purpose: it artfully draws the eyes upward, creating an illusion of taller ceilings and a more expansive space. This clever design trick contributes significantly to the overall sense of grandeur and openness in our relatively compact bathroom, perfectly aligning with our goal of making the room feel larger and more luxurious. It’s an essential element in achieving a timeless, elegant modern vintage bathroom design without expanding the physical footprint.

It’s truly astonishing to look back at the “before” photos and see the dramatic difference this architectural detail has made. The transformation from plain walls to elegantly paneled surfaces is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and a key characteristic of our modern vintage aesthetic.

Elevating the Essentials: A Stylish Wood Toilet Seat
Given that our existing bathroom layout didn’t allow for a separate toilet closet, we sought creative ways to integrate the toilet aesthetically into the overall design. Our solution was to “prettify” this essential fixture. By opting for a luxurious wooden toilet seat, similar to how we used a black toilet seat in our girls’ bathroom, we introduced an unexpected element of warmth and sophistication. Complementing this, a sleek Champagne Bronze flusher was installed, echoing the other metallic accents in the room. This approach demonstrates that even the most utilitarian items can contribute to a cohesive and stylish interior when chosen with intention, perfect for a modern vintage bathroom.

Subtle Statements: Vintage Bathroom Art
In keeping with the refined elegance of the space, we chose bathroom art that would enhance rather than dominate the room. Our selection includes a black and gold frame paired with a delicate floral etching, and a vintage gold frame showcasing a serene landscape painting. These pieces were carefully curated to be understated yet impactful, adding layers of visual interest and a subtle nod to historical artistry without competing with the bolder design elements. They provide a touch of personal flair and sophistication, completing the modern vintage aesthetic of our en suite bathroom.

Maximizing Space: Elegant Open Bathroom Shelves
In a smaller bathroom, maximizing storage is key, and we needed to find a creative solution for wall storage that didn’t involve bulky cabinetry. The answer came in the form of open wall shelves. To seamlessly integrate them into our design, I personally spray-painted the shelf brackets to match the brushed gold finish of the other fixtures and hardware in the room. This DIY touch ensures a cohesive look, making the shelves appear custom-made for the space and perfectly aligned with our modern vintage aesthetic.

Clever Small Bathroom Storage Solutions
These shelves were then thoughtfully styled with decorative and functional items. A brass vase, discovered at a thrift store and boasting a perfect patina, adds a touch of vintage charm. Alongside it, apothecary jars and small bins neatly store everyday toiletries like Q-tips, cotton balls, and bobby pins, keeping necessities organized yet easily accessible. This approach to open shelving ensures that even practical items contribute to the overall aesthetic of our modern vintage en suite.

Further enhancing our small bathroom storage capabilities is a double hamper. Designed to blend seamlessly with the white walls, it offers a discrete yet highly functional solution for sorting dirty clothes. This allows for practical storage to exist in plain sight without creating an unsightly distraction, maintaining the bathroom’s elegant and uncluttered atmosphere, and making it an ideal choice for any modern vintage bathroom remodel aiming for seamless integration.
