Unlock Your Small Closet’s Potential: A DIY IKEA Billy Bookcase Hack for Ultimate Master Bedroom Organization
After weeks of planning, problem-solving, and a good bit of elbow grease, our master bedroom’s “his and hers” closets are finally complete! What started as a vision for perfectly organized wardrobes in our small spaces has become a reality, exceeding all expectations. This journey might not have unfolded exactly as initially planned, but the unexpected detours led us to a truly customized and highly functional closet system that was undoubtedly worth every moment of effort.
Transforming these compact areas into efficient storage havens required significant dedication. It meant embarking on multiple two-hour round trips to IKEA, a testament to our commitment to finding the right components. It also challenged us to meticulously plan every inch, ensuring maximum usability within the tight confines of our existing closets. Beyond the physical labor, this project prompted a much-needed decluttering session, inspiring an honest assessment of our clothing and accessories to keep only those items that truly “spark joy” – a truly liberating experience.

Every step of the way, from the initial planning stages to the final organizational touches, reinforced our belief that this DIY closet makeover was a worthwhile endeavor. We’ve created not just storage, but a personalized system that caters perfectly to our daily needs, making getting ready a seamless and enjoyable part of our routine.
The IKEA Pax Dilemma: Adapting Our Vision for Small Closets
For those who followed our initial progress, you might recall our aspirations to utilize the popular IKEA Pax system. However, as we delved deeper into the measurements of our specific closet dimensions – particularly their limited width and depth – it became clear that the standard Pax units simply wouldn’t fit efficiently. The math just didn’t add up, and we were unwilling to compromise on precious space or functional design.

Necessity truly is the mother of invention! Faced with this challenge, we pivoted our strategy and discovered the incredible versatility of IKEA Billy bookcases. We ingeniously adapted four Billy bookcases and integrated a single, super-skinny Pax frame into the back of my L-shaped closet. This combination allowed us to create a bespoke built-in look that perfectly maximized every awkward corner and narrow stretch of wall, proving that even the most popular IKEA items can be creatively re-purposed for unique storage solutions.
Given the incredibly tight dimensions of our small closets, traditional drawers would have been cumbersome and impractical. Instead, we opted for a smart basket system to house smaller items, providing flexible and easily accessible storage. We utilized these charming whitewashed medium baskets and these elegant medium rattan baskets. So far, they have proven to be the ideal solution, blending seamlessly with the aesthetic while delivering exceptional functionality.
Now, let’s dive into the specifics of each personalized closet transformation.

After! A Functional and Organized Space
(Please bear with me for the somewhat grainy and poorly lit photos. Capturing these tight spaces with a non-wide-angle lens on a rainy day was quite challenging, but they illustrate the dramatic transformation effectively!)

Robert’s organizational needs were distinct from mine. Since we both already utilize dressers in our bedroom for items like t-shirts, underwear, and shorts, his closet required less emphasis on small, compartmentalized storage. The basket system proved to be an excellent solution for the remaining smaller accessories and seasonal items.

Each basket in Robert’s closet serves a specific purpose, contributing to the overall order. The lower basket, strategically placed above his shoe shelves, neatly stores dress socks, making them incredibly easy to access during his morning routine. Other baskets are dedicated to winter essentials like hats and gloves, as well as various seasonal items that aren’t in constant rotation. This targeted approach ensures everything has its designated place, eliminating clutter and saving time.

To further enhance functionality, we installed a discreet yet highly effective pull-out rack specifically for his ties and belts. This simple addition keeps these accessories neatly organized and easily visible, preventing them from getting tangled or lost. For his collection of frequently worn baseball caps, we utilized sturdy hooks mounted directly on the walls, providing quick access and a tidy display. This thoughtful integration of specific storage solutions ensures that every item in Robert’s wardrobe is both accessible and well-maintained, transforming a once chaotic space into a model of efficiency.

After! A Dream Wardrobe Transformation

My closet, being L-shaped and a bit more complex, required an even more intricate blend of solutions to fully utilize its unique layout. The versatile basket system proved indispensable here as well. In my numerous baskets, I neatly tucked away various accessories: scarves, hats, gloves, an assortment of purses and bags, and all my belts. These items, once scattered, now have dedicated homes, making them easy to find and keeping the hanging areas pristine.

Beyond the baskets, the two small Komplement drawers integrated into the skinny Pax frame provided the perfect hidden storage for specific garments. Here, I neatly store swimsuits, swimsuit cover-ups, and specialized shapewear that I typically reserve for special occasions (hello, Spanx!). These drawers keep these less-frequently used items discreetly organized and protected, maintaining a clean and uncluttered look in the main hanging areas.

One of the most satisfying custom additions to my closet was the improvised shoe cubby, cleverly built by bridging the gap between two of the Billy bookcases. This bespoke solution proved invaluable, providing dedicated and visible storage for my shoes. Instead of a pile on the floor, each pair now has its own spot, keeping them tidy and easily accessible, and significantly contributing to the overall organization and aesthetic of the closet.

The system for organizing my clothes is meticulously designed for efficiency and ease. Each section of my hanging wardrobe is first categorized by type – sweaters and jackets, blouses and tops, pants, and dresses. Within these main categories, I further sub-divide by sleeve length (sleeveless, short-sleeve, long-sleeve). Finally, and perhaps most visually satisfying, each sub-category is arranged by color gradient, following the ROYGBIV spectrum (starting with neutrals like black, brown, white, then moving through pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple). This systematic approach makes it incredibly simple to locate specific items and effortlessly assemble outfits, saving valuable time during busy mornings.

Implementing this highly structured organization system has been a game-changer for my daily routine. It’s now so much easier to visualize my entire wardrobe and put together cohesive outfits, making dressing a more enjoyable and stress-free experience. While we did receive some suggestions to use skinny velvet hangers for space-saving, I must express my strong preference for the sturdy wooden hangers. They significantly reduce tangling and keep garments spaced nicely, which is a key factor in maintaining the overall neatness of my closet. Ultimately, hanger choice comes down to personal preference, and these work perfectly for us.
