Today marks the exciting culmination of a truly rewarding project! If you’ve been following our journey on the McNay project, you’ll know that just a few weeks ago, my husband Robert and I felt a strong urge to revitalize the living room of our beloved neighbors, King and Heather. Their incredible dedication to our community, with King serving as a firefighter and Heather as a teacher, made this renovation project even more meaningful. We wanted to create a sanctuary where they could relax and recharge after tirelessly giving so much to others.
The moment I stepped into their living room, I was captivated by its inherent charm and unique character. It was clear this space had immense potential just waiting to be unveiled.
Just look at those incredible architectural elements! The exposed wooden beams, the distinctive planked walls, the rich hardwood floors, and the abundance of natural light streaming in through those large windows – these features were a designer’s dream. King and Heather share a deep affection for Charleston and the serene coastal lifestyle, which immediately inspired a vision for a light, bright, and airy modern coastal living room design. We aimed to create a space that reflected their personalities and love for the coast, blending comfort with a fresh, contemporary aesthetic.
The transformation is truly remarkable, exceeding even our highest expectations. The difference from before to after is absolutely incredible!
Early in the planning stages for this ambitious living room makeover, we reached out to Bassett Furniture. Their esteemed legacy of over a century in the furniture industry is synonymous with unparalleled quality, exceptional durability, and timeless style. Knowing that their beautiful furnishings are proudly made right here in the U.S., with manufacturing facilities in Virginia and North Carolina, reinforced our decision. We were committed to providing King and Heather with only the finest, most comfortable, and long-lasting pieces for their refreshed living space. Bassett Furniture graciously partnered with us, providing the stunning chaise sofa, a luxurious leather recliner, a practical coffee table, and a versatile end table, allowing us to focus our efforts on the remaining design elements.
One of the most significant initial tasks involved extensively painting the tongue and groove wall paneling throughout the living room. We meticulously applied several coats of Behr Polar Bear, a crisp and inviting white shade that instantly brightened and modernized the space. While this particular painting job presented its challenges due to the intricate grooves and surface area, the stunning results made every brushstroke and every hour of effort absolutely worth it. The fresh white walls now serve as a perfect backdrop for the coastal theme, allowing the natural light to bounce around the room and enhancing the room’s spacious feel.
Optimizing the Living Room Layout
One of the primary design challenges we faced was the room’s narrow dimensions and its dual functionality as both a comfortable living area and Heather’s dedicated home office. To effectively address these constraints, we strategically divided the living room into two distinct, yet cohesive, zones. This thoughtful spatial planning allowed the far side of the room to be exclusively designated as a productive and organized workspace for Heather, without compromising the comfort and aesthetic appeal of the main seating area. This separation ensures that each function of the room can be utilized to its fullest potential, providing both relaxation and productivity.
Styling Around the Media Center
Creating an inviting and visually appealing focal point around the television was essential. We artfully framed the TV with a curated collection of sketches, each holding special significance for King and Heather. These included charming depictions of Charleston, a city they adore for its coastal charm, Columbia, and a sketch representing Wyoming, King’s home state. Flanking these personal touches are a pair of elegant plug-in wall sconces. Since the room lacked hardwired ceiling lighting, these sconces provide crucial ambient light, enhancing both the functionality and the cozy atmosphere of the media area. This simple yet impactful arrangement, achieved by adding just a few carefully selected items around their existing console table, completely elevated the space, making it feel more intentional and beautifully finished.
The Heart of the Living Room: Bassett Furniture
The centerpiece of this revitalized modern coastal living room is undoubtedly the magnificent Davenport chaise sectional sofa from Bassett Furniture. Upholstered in a sophisticated Texture Navy fabric, this sofa is not only visually stunning but also incredibly comfortable. Its inviting design and ample seating make it the perfect spot for King and Heather to unwind, entertain, or simply enjoy a quiet evening at home. In fact, its comfort is so exceptional that I’m genuinely convinced we need one for our own house! This sectional anchors the main seating area, providing both style and supreme relaxation.
To enhance the sofa’s allure, I thoughtfully styled it with a textured white pillow, adding a layer of sophisticated tactile appeal, and a charming blue print pillow that subtly echoes the coastal theme. For those cooler fall evenings, a soft and inviting cozy gray blanket was draped over the arm, adding warmth and a touch of hygge. Adjacent to the sofa, a sleek floor lamp provides essential task lighting, creating an ideal and comfortable spot for reading or simply relaxing.
Complementing the sofa is the revolutionary Magnificent Motion chair, upholstered in a buttery soft Leather Sierra Toast. This is hands down the most innovative and comfortable recliner I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. From its outward appearance, it presents itself as a sophisticated stationary club chair, seamlessly blending into the elegant decor. However, with the mere touch of a button, it transforms, offering power positioning in every conceivable way, providing personalized comfort and support. Its advanced features even include Bluetooth control capabilities, truly setting a new standard for relaxation and modern living. It’s an indispensable addition to this modern coastal living room, offering both style and unparalleled comfort.
To introduce an appealing textural contrast and a touch of rustic charm into the design, we integrated this sturdy Verona coffee table. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this coffee table is incredibly functional, featuring deep drawers on two sides. These ample storage compartments are perfect for stowing away magazines, remote controls, or other living room essentials, helping to maintain a clutter-free and organized environment. Adjacent to the seating, the elegant Bella side table serves a dual purpose, offering convenient surface space and additional storage. A hidden power strip with integrated USB ports transforms it into an ideal charging station for all their devices, blending practicality with sophisticated design. These carefully selected furniture pieces elevate the overall functionality and aesthetic of the modern coastal living room.
The rich navy hue of the sofa creates a beautiful visual harmony with a cherished marsh painting that King and Heather commissioned from a talented local artist. This particular artwork holds deep sentimental value, depicting a tranquil spot where Heather spent many happy hours playing as a child. This personal touch injects a layer of unique character and warmth into the modern coastal aesthetic. Unifying the entire seating area and tying together the diverse elements is a sophisticated gray and blue rug. Its subtle pattern and complementary colors seamlessly integrate the furniture with the artwork and the overall coastal theme, adding softness and definition to the space.
Innovative Storage and Functional Workspace
Given Heather’s profession as a teacher, she frequently engages in grading assignments and meticulous lesson planning at her beautiful heirloom desk, a cherished piece handed down from her grandmother. This necessitated the creation of a highly functional and well-organized designated workspace within the living room, complete with ample storage options. The room originally featured two tiny, squatty closets with disproportionately small doors. These closets, which strangely concealed a wet bar from the 1960s, made accessing the shelves within nearly impossible. Furthermore, an existing window seat, rather than being a charming feature, proved to be more of a hindrance to the room’s flow and functionality. This dated setup was far from ideal for a modern living room and dedicated home office.
Robert, with his incredible vision and handy skills, embarked on a transformative project. He cleverly cut open the closet doors, converting these restrictive spaces into inviting, open built-in shelves. This not only dramatically improved accessibility but also added valuable display and storage opportunities. Simultaneously, he expertly removed the cumbersome window seat, reclaiming precious space and creating the perfect niche for Heather’s desk directly by the window. This strategic alteration now provides her with abundant natural light while she works, fostering a more pleasant and productive environment. This comprehensive renovation of the storage and workspace areas truly exemplifies how thoughtful design can dramatically enhance both the form and function of a room.
After Robert’s structural enhancements, I had the pleasure of decorating the newly created built-in shelves. While I styled them with various decorative elements to align with the modern coastal aesthetic, Heather now has ample storage capacity for her books, teaching supplies, and any other items she might need to keep organized. This ensures her workspace remains both beautiful and highly functional. King and Heather also possess a wonderful collection of vibrant paintings that depict some of their favorite places, and one particular piece is among their most treasured. We strategically placed this beloved artwork directly above an accent cabinet that I personally painted in Fusion Mineral Paint Sterling. This cabinet provides an easily accessible spot for a printer and any other essential office items, blending seamlessly with the decor while serving a practical purpose.
To ensure that their cherished painting remained the undeniable focal point of this section of the room, I deliberately kept all other decorative items in the immediate vicinity neutral in color and understated in design. This minimalist approach allows the vibrant colors and personal significance of the artwork to truly pop and command attention, creating a harmonious balance within the modern coastal design.
Adding Coastal Charm Through Details and Accents
The success of any interior design lies in the thoughtful integration of small, impactful details. For the decorative accents throughout King and Heather’s modern coastal living room, I carefully selected items that woven in various beachy textures. This included a beautiful rattan tray, which adds organic warmth, a strand of elegant wooden beads, providing a natural, tactile element, and a unique oyster shell dish, bringing in an authentic touch of the seashore. These elements contribute significantly to the relaxed, coastal ambiance we aimed to achieve.
A delicate air plant, perched gracefully atop a stack of vintage books, adds a touch of organic life and feels perfectly at home within this serene coastal setting. Its low-maintenance beauty is an ideal complement to the effortless style of the room.
For the open shelving, I sourced a couple of exquisite antique round baskets and unique urns. Their intricate textures and timeless appeal immediately reminded me of the vibrant Straw Market in Charleston, further enhancing the coastal narrative of the space. To personalize the display even more, I framed a few of my own coastal art printables, which infuse the shelves with custom artistry and a distinctive charm, completing the curated look.
I truly cannot emphasize enough just how astounding this transformation is! The entire space feels completely reborn, infused with a newfound vibrancy and light.
It genuinely feels as though someone has simply flipped a switch, bathing the room in brilliant light. Now, those stunning natural wooden beams can truly shine in all their gorgeous glory, becoming a celebrated architectural feature rather than receding into the background. The modern coastal living room is no longer just a room; it’s a testament to thoughtful design, personalized touches, and the incredible power of a home makeover.
