Since those initial stages, our beautiful tile floor has been laid, and we are absolutely enamored with the result! It truly sets the tone for the entire space.

Our daughter, Olivia, meticulously selected this tile herself, drawn in by its whimsical hexagonal flower pattern. We have to agree – the girl has impeccable taste! The floor instantly adds a playful yet sophisticated touch, perfectly complementing the custom vanity we’re about to unveil.

When it came to designing the vanity for this bathroom, we knew an open table design with stylish vessel sinks would be the optimal choice. The bathroom itself is quite narrow, and a bulky, traditional vanity would have overwhelmed the space. Furthermore, since we already have a generously sized linen closet nearby, additional closed storage wasn’t a primary concern. Our goal was to create an airy feel while still providing a touch of practical functionality.

After much searching, we stumbled upon this exquisite console table. It perfectly matched our desired dimensions and, crucially, boasted functional drawers – a feature we were determined to preserve. The fact that it was crafted from solid wood with elegant dovetail joinery was a huge bonus, ensuring it would be incredibly sturdy and capable of supporting the weight of the sinks and daily use. The intricate detailing on the table was absolutely divine, making it an instant favorite! While it was a more significant investment than we typically make for a console table, we weren’t willing to compromise on quality for a permanent fixture in our home. Using cheap materials simply wasn’t an option for a piece that would withstand the rigors of a busy family bathroom.

Repurposing a vintage piece like a console table, dresser, or chest into a bathroom vanity can be a fantastic way to add character and custom flair to your home. However, it can also be a somewhat intricate process, especially when you aim to retain elements like functional drawers. Fortunately, Robert, with his knack for DIY, meticulously documented his process as he transformed this console table in the garage, allowing us to share a comprehensive tutorial with you.

DIY Guide: Converting a Console Table into a Bathroom Vanity

This tutorial focuses specifically on how to reconstruct a console table to accommodate plumbing for vessel sinks while brilliantly preserving the functionality of its drawers. This ingenious approach offers a clever storage solution for those everyday essentials.

Essential Supplies for Your Vanity Project:

  • Jigsaw: Indispensable for cutting curves and intricate shapes, particularly for sink cutouts.
  • Power drill: For pre-drilling holes and securing various components.
  • Circular saw: Ideal for straight, precise cuts, especially if modifying larger pieces of wood.
  • Finishing nail gun: For quick and secure fastening of drawer components and other trim work.
  • Sink template: Crucial for accurate sink placement and cutting, typically provided with your vessel sink.
  • Vessel sink(s): We selected this specific model for its style and dimensions.
  • Pencil: For marking measurements and outlines.
  • Butcher block countertop (optional): Adds warmth and natural beauty; ensure it’s suitable for a bathroom environment.
  • Stain of choice (optional): We achieved our desired look with a combination of Minwax Special Walnut and Weathered Oak.
  • Spar Urethane in satin finish: Essential for waterproofing and protecting your countertop from moisture.
  • 2 stain/poly brushes: For even application of stain and protective finishes.
  • Clear silicone caulk: For sealing gaps and preventing water penetration around the sink and backsplash.
  • Pry bar and hammer/mallet (not listed but used in step 1): For gentle disassembly.
  • Scrap piece of wood (approx. 1″x2″) (not listed but used in step 6): For creating drawer stoppers.

The Transformation Steps:

One of the primary reasons we specifically selected this console table was its existing functional drawers. Our hope was to creatively adapt them to provide a small but crucial amount of storage for bathroom essentials – think toothpaste, hairbrushes, or even a modest makeup collection – all within easy reach.

  1. Remove the Under-Table Board: Begin by carefully removing any existing board or shelf from underneath the table. Use a pry bar and hammer or mallet for this step, working gently to avoid damaging the table’s structure. This creates an open space necessary for plumbing.
  2. Decide on Drawer Functionality: This is a critical decision point. If you prefer to forgo functional drawers and simply have false fronts for aesthetic purposes, you can cut out the entire drawer box with a circular saw, then reattach the drawer front as a decorative panel. This simplifies the process significantly.
  3. Prepare Drawers for Plumbing (If Keeping Functional): If, like us, you wish to retain functional drawers, pull them out completely. You’ll need to account for the sink’s drain pipe. Measure how far the sink’s drain will extend from the back wall of the vanity. Use this crucial measurement to mark where your drawer’s new back panel will need to be positioned, ensuring ample clearance for the plumbing. This step requires precision to maximize drawer space while accommodating the necessary pipes.
  4. Measuring and marking a console table drawer to accommodate sink plumbing for a functional bathroom vanity.

  5. Modify Drawer Structure: With your measurement marked, use a jigsaw to carefully cut the existing back and bottom sections of the drawer. The goal is to detach these pieces while leaving the side panels of the drawer box fully intact. This modification creates the necessary void for the sink drain.
  6. Reattach Drawer Back: Take the detached back piece of the drawer and move it forward to your desired, shortened drawer depth. Securely nail it into place on each side of the drawer box using finishing nails. This effectively creates a shallower, functional drawer.
  7. Install Drawer Stoppers: To prevent the newly modified drawers from pulling out too far, create simple drawer stoppers. Use a scrap piece of wood, roughly 1″x2″, and nail it to the inside of the table frame on either side of the drawer opening. Position it so it catches the lip of the drawer front when the drawer is fully extended, stopping it at the desired point.
  8. Installing a custom drawer stopper made from a wood scrap during console table vanity conversion.

  9. Prepare Sink Templates: Most vessel sinks come with a template for cutting the necessary hole. If yours does not, you can create one by tracing the exact base of your sink onto a piece of sturdy cardboard. Accuracy here is key to a snug fit.
  10. Tracing a sink template onto a piece of wood for a DIY bathroom vanity project.

  11. Mark Sink Placement: Carefully position your sink template(s) on the surface of your console table (or chosen countertop material) exactly where you want your vessel sinks to sit. Trace the outlines with a pencil. Double-check your measurements and spacing before moving to the next step.
  12. Marking the console table surface with sink templates for precise cutouts for vessel sinks.

  13. Cut Sink Holes: Using your jigsaw, carefully cut along the traced circles for the sink holes. Take your time to ensure clean, precise cuts. If your console table surface is thick, you might need to pre-drill a starting hole for the jigsaw blade.

  15. Prepare Optional Butcher Block Countertop: For our vanity, we opted for a beautiful butcher block countertop to add warmth and a touch of natural elegance. If you choose this option, you’ll repeat steps 7, 8, and 9 on the butcher block itself, ensuring the sink cutouts align perfectly with the console table’s structure.

  17. Test Fit Components: Before any finishing touches, perform a dry fit. Place the countertop (if using) onto the console table, and then carefully set the vessel sinks into their respective cutouts. This allows you to check for proper fit, alignment, and clearance before moving on. Make any necessary adjustments now.

  19. Stain and Waterproof the Countertop: This step is crucial for durability in a bathroom environment. Before moving the vanity indoors, apply two coats of your chosen stain (we used Minwax Special Walnut for a rich base) to the butcher block countertop. After the stain has dried completely, apply at least four generous coats of Spar Urethane in a satin finish. Spar Urethane is an excellent choice for its superior water resistance, forming a protective barrier that will safeguard your countertop from splashes and moisture, even during enthusiastic Barbie doll pool parties in the sinks!
  20. Applying stain and Spar Urethane to a butcher block countertop for a DIY bathroom vanity, ensuring waterproofing.

  21. Caulk and Seal: Once the vanity is in its final position in the bathroom, apply a bead of clear silicone caulk along the back and side edges where the countertop meets the wall. This creates a watertight seal, preventing water from seeping behind the vanity and causing damage.
  22. Applying clear silicone caulk along the back edge of a newly installed bathroom vanity countertop.

  23. Install Sinks and Faucets: Finally, follow the specific installation instructions provided by your vessel sink and faucet manufacturers. This will typically involve sealing the sinks to the countertop and connecting the plumbing. If you’re unsure about plumbing connections, consider consulting a professional.

The finished repurposed console table transformed into a charming bathroom vanity with vessel sinks.

The result is absolutely perfect! This DIY bathroom vanity not only fits seamlessly into our narrow bathroom but also adds an incredible amount of charm and bespoke character that a standard store-bought vanity simply couldn’t achieve. The functional drawers are a game-changer for keeping small essentials tidy and out of sight.

Our next steps for the bathroom include painting the walls, installing stylish light fixtures, hanging mirrors, and adding decorative accents. We’ll also be adding a couple of step stools for the girls and a woven storage basket underneath the vanity for fresh towels. Oh, and of course, a thorough organization of the linen closet is in order!

At the moment, our entire second floor bears the chaotic signs of this extensive bathroom renovation, but we know all the effort and temporary disruption will be entirely worth it for the beautiful, functional space we’re creating.

It transforms a utilitarian item into a genuine design statement that reflects your personality and home’s aesthetic.
