Curating Dream Homes for Publication

From Dream to Reality: Our DIY Window Seat Featured in Better Homes & Gardens

For as long as I can remember, the sight of a fresh stack of Better Homes & Gardens magazines gracing our family room coffee table was a constant fixture in my childhood home. Even as a young girl, I would eagerly flip through the glossy pages, marveling at the beautifully curated houses and gardens, often wondering if the lives depicted within those pages were truly as picture-perfect as they appeared. It was a world of aspirational living, a benchmark for home decor and design that captivated my imagination and, unbeknownst to me at the time, quietly sowed the seeds of my own future in home styling and DIY.

Little did I know, years later, that my own home and a project born from our hands would not only grace those very pages but become a cherished part of that magazine’s legacy. This isn’t just a story about a DIY window seat; it’s a testament to the power of passion, creativity, and the unexpected twists life throws your way. Because, yes, it turns out those people in the magazines are real. And in February 2018, that was us!

The Unforgettable Email: An Invitation to the Big Leagues

The journey to those glossy pages began on an ordinary July afternoon. I was sitting in the parking lot of a local thrift store, phone in hand, performing my ritualistic email check before diving into my weekly hunt for hidden treasures. Suddenly, an email caught my eye, its subject line sending a jolt of disbelief through me: “Better Homes and Gardens.” My heart pounded. Could this be real? I nearly spluttered my coffee all over the dashboard of my car. An editor from Better Homes & Gardens was asking if my husband, Robert, and I would be willing to do a photoshoot for an upcoming winter issue!

The request was specific and incredibly exciting: they wanted to feature our innovative DIY window seat, ingeniously crafted from a repurposed kitchen cabinet, in their renowned “I Did It” column. This particular project was not just a charming addition to our home; it was a clever solution we devised to neatly house all of our TV electronics, transforming clutter into a stylish, functional focal point. My fingers, usually adept at typing blog posts, fumbled with an urgency I’ve rarely experienced, practically flying across the screen to type a resounding “YES!” as quickly as humanly possible. Though I might be technically a millennial, my texting speed certainly doesn’t always reflect it, but for this, I made an exception.

This wasn’t just an email; it was an affirmation of countless hours spent dreaming, planning, and executing DIY projects. It was a recognition of our efforts to create a home that was both beautiful and functional, a space that truly reflected our personality and our love for hands-on creation. The prospect of sharing our unique kitchen cabinet hack with millions of readers in such a prestigious publication was, to say the least, exhilarating.

Behind the Scenes: Preparation for a Professional Photoshoot

The whirlwind began almost immediately. A few weeks later, on a typically humid and rainy August day in the Carolinas, we officially kicked off the preparations. Our assigned stylist, Sandi – just saying “our stylist” made me feel ridiculously fancy! – whisked me away on a shopping excursion. The mission: to find a few outfits that would not only photograph well but also be “winter-friendly.” This proved to be a wonderfully quirky challenge, as finding cozy sweaters and winter accessories in the scorching heat of August in the South is no small feat. We laughed our way through stores, searching for pieces that would evoke a wintery feel without causing us to overheat on the day of the shoot.

Sandi’s expertise was evident from the start. She had a keen eye for what would pop on camera and a knack for making the entire process feel effortless and fun. This initial step, often overlooked by those outside the industry, highlighted the meticulous planning that goes into every single image seen in a magazine. It wasn’t just about showing up; it was about curating every element to tell a cohesive, visually appealing story. The anticipation for the actual shoot day grew with every outfit we considered and every accessory we discussed.

Lights, Camera, Action! The Photoshoot Experience

The morning of the photoshoot arrived, bringing with it an air of excitement and a touch of nervous energy. Our home, usually a sanctuary of everyday life, was transformed into a bustling professional studio. Sandi, with her incredible eye for detail, expertly styled our DIY window seat. She brought an array of beautiful accessories – plush pillows, cozy throws, and tasteful decorative items – each carefully chosen and placed to complement our existing decor and enhance the visual appeal of the space. Her ability to elevate our humble window seat into a magazine-worthy vignette was truly impressive.

Our photographer, Lincoln, along with his diligent assistant, Graham, worked tirelessly to set up an elaborate array of lights, reflectors, and large white screens. I honestly lost count of the equipment. Our usually quiet back porch, where we often enjoy our morning coffee, was suddenly unrecognizable, sporting a professional setup that looked like something out of a Hollywood movie set. The sheer scale of the equipment needed to capture that perfect shot was eye-opening.

Robert and I, initially a little self-conscious, quickly relaxed into the process. Sandi, Lincoln, and Graham created such a warm, friendly, and genuinely fun atmosphere. We tried on three or four different outfits, striking various poses, and constantly adjusting based on their expert guidance. I think we laughed almost the entire time, genuinely enjoying the surreal experience of being “models” for a day. Their professionalism combined with their approachable personalities made the long hours fly by. It truly felt like a collaborative effort, with everyone dedicated to capturing the essence of our home and the spirit of our DIY project.

The Art of Perfection: A Glimpse into Magazine Magic vs. Real Life

One of the most astonishing aspects of the entire experience was witnessing the incredible attention to detail required to produce just one magazine-quality photograph. We watched in awe as Lincoln captured countless shots, each one involving the tiniest, most precise adjustments. “Lauren, could you tilt your head just an inch to the right?” or “Robert, turn your foot just a hair.” These were the constant, highly detailed directions that echoed through our living room. Every shadow, every highlight, every angle was meticulously controlled and refined to achieve that flawless aesthetic. It was a fascinating, almost surgical approach to photography.

This intense, behind-the-scenes look at professional magazine production truly brought home a crucial realization for me: the images we encounter in magazines, catalogs, on TV, and in movies are never truly that perfect in real life. Of course, I’d always known this intellectually, but to witness firsthand the couple of hours it takes to craft just one seemingly effortless photo—the lighting, the styling, the fractional adjustments—it solidified this understanding in a profound way. It hammered home the fact that striving for a “magazine-worthy” appearance in our homes and daily lives is utterly impossible, and frankly, unnecessary. And I am completely and utterly okay with that.

This experience was a powerful reminder that while the dream of a picture-perfect home is lovely, the reality of a lived-in, imperfect, and authentic space is infinitely more beautiful. It challenged the subconscious pressures we often feel to maintain an unattainable level of perfection, especially in the age of social media. It was incredibly fun to play models for a day, but the most valuable takeaway was the reinforcement of our blog’s core message: embracing the beauty in the everyday and celebrating real life, with all its wonderful imperfections. Our DIY window seat might have looked pristine in the magazine, but its true beauty lies in the memories made around it every single day.

A Glimpse into Our Reality: Post-Shoot Family Fun

And now, for a little “reality check” and a dose of our everyday charm! Here’s our little clan, gathered on our newly “famous” (cue the snickers) window seat. After returning home from church yesterday, still dressed in our Sunday best, we decided to have our very own, much less formal, photoshoot with our sweet Olivia. It was a stark and humorous contrast to the meticulously planned professional shoot.

Our beloved pups, Lola and Stella, however, quickly decided that the model life simply isn’t for them. They tend to crack under the pressure of the camera! Stella, ever the opportunist, was far more interested in trying to eat the freshly delivered magazine than posing for a picture. And Lola? She just kept giving me those soulful puppy dog eyes, silently pleading to be left alone so she could go back to her much-preferred napping schedule. It’s these chaotic, heartwarming moments that truly define our home and our lives, proving that authenticity always wins.
