Creating this journal was an immensely enjoyable and deeply personal experience for me. To fully appreciate its essence, a brief delve into history is essential. My inspiration often stems from my surroundings, and in this case, it was the magnificent 12th-century Cleeve Abbey in Washford, UK – a truly awe-inspiring historical site well worth exploring through a quick online search.
The abbey carries with it a profound historical narrative. During the tumultuous 1530s, King Henry VIII’s desire for an annulment from Catherine of Aragon and his subsequent marriage to Anne Boleyn led to a monumental shift: the separation of England from the Catholic Church and Rome. This seismic event triggered the dissolution of monasteries and abbeys across England, resulting in the confiscation or destruction of countless religious books, sacred artworks, and invaluable treasures.
Imagine the desperate efforts of the monks, striving to conceal their cherished religious documents and precious artifacts from the impending destruction. As I wander through the serene, crumbling ruins of Cleeve Abbey today, a profound sense of history envelops me. I often find myself contemplating the possibility that, perhaps, hidden deep within the earth or secreted away in forgotten corners, some of these sacred religious items might still lie buried, awaiting rediscovery. This powerful imagery of lost and found, of history veiled in dust and time, became the fundamental heartbeat of my “Angels and Artifacts” Junk Journal.
My creative vision for this journal was to evoke the powerful sensation of unearthing these long-lost religious icons. I pictured them as if discovered in a forgotten vault, coated in layers of ancient dust, surrounded by crumbling plaster, and bearing the unmistakable marks of centuries of decay. Replicating such an aged and atmospheric narrative within the confines of a junk journal was indeed an ambitious undertaking, but one I embraced wholeheartedly.
To achieve this desired ancient, unearthed aesthetic, the journal’s cover and many of its internal pages feature a distinctly rough, plaster-like finish. This texture was meticulously created using various old papers, thoughtfully distressed and then layered with a chalky white paint, giving them an authentic, aged appearance. Delicate pieces of antique silk are interspersed throughout, adding a touch of faded elegance and hinting at the former grandeur of these hidden treasures.
Structurally, I opted for a more traditional book format, comprising two carefully constructed signatures securely attached to the cover. Unlike many modern junk journals, you won’t find an abundance of “tuck spots” or overt pockets here. My intention was to create a more classic, venerable tome—a place where precious, small artifacts or personal mementos could be reverently slipped between the pages for safekeeping, mirroring the historical concealment of sacred items. The journal itself is elegantly secured with a subtle ring of antique silk, and to further enhance its ancient mystique, a charmingly rusty old key is attached, symbolizing discovery and unlocking forgotten secrets.
The selection of imagery was paramount in conveying the journal’s profound theme. I deliberately sought out religious images that exuded a solemn, church-like aesthetic, favoring those with a dignified and timeless quality. My aim was to evoke the sacred art found within ancient abbeys and cathedrals, purposefully steering clear of the more whimsical, cherubic types of angel imagery. Instead, I gravitated towards representations of angels that felt powerful, ethereal, and imbued with a sense of historical reverence.
The bulk of the foundational pages for this “Angels and Artifacts” journal were sourced from two exceptional collections available on The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership Site: the Antique Ephemera Bundle and the Angel Ephemera Bundle. These bundles proved to be an invaluable resource, offering a treasure trove of images. The Antique Ephemera provided a rich selection of historical documents and ornate designs, while the Angel Ephemera bundle was particularly crucial for its inclusion of truly powerful angelic depictions, many accompanied by beautiful printable journal pages featuring evocative sky designs. These elements combined perfectly to lay the atmospheric groundwork for the journal.
The overarching technique I employed throughout this “Angels and Artifacts” junk journal was the art of layered painting. I meticulously applied textured paints directly onto many of the chosen Graphics Fairy images, a process designed to imbue them with the appearance and tactile quality of ancient, time-worn artifacts. This method transforms a flat print into something that feels excavated, giving each image a profound sense of history and depth. For those eager to explore this transformative technique further, a comprehensive craft tutorial detailing this process will soon be available on the Premium Membership Site.
These embellished images found various homes within the journal; some were integrated directly as pages, forming the very fabric of the book, while others were crafted into individual cards, designed to be discovered as hidden treasures or used as journaling prompts.
One striking example is an image from the Antique Ephemera bundle, depicting an angel gracefully holding a torch and incense. Originally presented as an etched, monochromatic illustration, it offered the perfect canvas for my artistic intervention. I carefully introduced subtle colors and a protective layer of wax to this image, meticulously building up layers to achieve a genuinely antique, almost parchment-like appearance. The result is a page that feels as though it has survived centuries, a true artifact within the journal.
Medieval Card: A Glimpse into the Past
Green Wax Page: Textured Beauty
Similarly, images 5A and 6A from the Angel Ephemera bundle were initially uncolored, providing another opportunity for creative transformation. Applying both color and wax to these prints allowed me to deepen their historical resonance and integrate them seamlessly into the journal’s overall aesthetic. Among these, image 5A stands out as arguably my favorite in the entire book. It is an exquisitely detailed drawing, unmistakably medieval in its stylistic flair. Upon close examination, one can observe the remarkably distinct and unusually shaped folds of the angel’s dress, a testament to the artisan’s skill and a fascinating detail that truly sets this piece apart. This card perfectly encapsulates the delicate balance between divine beauty and ancient craftsmanship that defines the “Angels and Artifacts” theme.
To further enhance the immersive atmosphere of ancient decay and lost grandeur, I incorporated elements from another fascinating collection: the Architectural Drawings Bundle. While I didn’t use these intricate drawings as direct, standalone pages, their potential for subtle integration was immense. My approach was to print out selected architectural drawings and then delicately copy or trace elements of them onto the chalky, textured backgrounds of my journal pages. This technique created the illusion of faded blueprints or ancient sketches appearing on crumbling walls.
The inclusion of these architectural motifs served a crucial purpose: they added another layer to the impression of the abbey’s crumbling religious architecture, as if glimpses of its original design were still faintly visible beneath layers of dust and time. It evokes the feeling of discovering forgotten plans or an artist’s rendering hidden within the ruins, perfectly aligning with the overarching narrative of unearthed treasures and historical resonance that defines the “Angels and Artifacts” journal.

To further enrich the journal’s textual elements and mimic the ancient manuscripts that might have been hidden in Cleeve Abbey, I utilized pages featuring exquisite handwritten script.
