DIY Double Sided Envelope Supplies: Your Crafting Arsenal
Gathering the right tools and materials is the first step towards a successful crafting session. Here’s everything you’ll need to create your beautiful double-sided ephemera envelopes:
- Printing Paper or Cardstock: For the envelopes themselves, regular printing paper (80-100gsm) works wonderfully, especially for smaller envelopes, as it folds easily. If you prefer a sturdier feel, lightweight cardstock (160-200gsm) is also a great option, ensuring your envelopes have a more substantial touch without being too difficult to fold.
- Cardstock Paper (for templates): A heavier cardstock (200-250gsm) is ideal for printing your square templates. Its rigidity will ensure that your templates remain durable and accurate for repeated use, providing consistent results for every envelope you make.
- Home Printer: A reliable home printer is essential for bringing your digital printables to life. Any inkjet or laser printer capable of handling various paper weights will suffice.
- Sharp Scissors: Precision is key in paper crafting. A good pair of sharp scissors will ensure clean cuts, contributing significantly to the professional finish of your envelopes.
- Ruler: An essential tool for accurate measurements and creating crisp, straight folds. A clear acrylic ruler can be particularly helpful for aligning your templates.
- Regular Pencil: For tracing your templates onto the printed paper and marking the center points. Choose a pencil with a medium lead (HB) that is easy to erase.
- Craft Adhesive: You’ll need a good quality adhesive to secure your envelope flaps. Options include Mod Podge (matte finish for a subtle look), a reliable paper glue stick for quick adhesion, or any other craft glue you trust that dries clear and strong.
- Gold Accents Washi Tape: This decorative and functional tape will be used to embellish your envelopes, adding a touch of metallic shimmer and securely closing the flaps without damaging the paper.
- Gold Marker (Optional): A gold marker, such as the Decocolor mentioned, is perfect for adding extra gilded highlights and personalized touches to your envelopes. If you don’t have one, gold acrylic paint or even gold nail polish can be suitable alternatives.
Step-by-Step Tutorial: Crafting Your Double-Sided Envelopes
1. Prepare Your Templates
Begin by printing the square templates onto a sturdy piece of cardstock. The heavier the cardstock, the more robust and long-lasting your templates will be, allowing for countless crafting sessions. I personally opted for some ivory cardstock I had on hand, and it fed through my printer effortlessly. Once printed, carefully cut out each square template using your sharp scissors. Take your time during this step, as the accuracy of these templates directly influences the final shape and precision of your handmade envelopes. Remember, you only need to print these templates once; they are designed for endless re-use.
2. Mastering Double-Sided Printing
Next, print your beautiful French ephemera printable. I recommend using regular printer paper for this step, especially for smaller envelopes, as it makes folding significantly easier and results in crisp creases. If you prefer the tactile feel of cardstock, ensure it’s a lightweight variety to maintain smooth folds. The trickiest part for many is achieving perfect alignment for double-sided printing. Here’s a foolproof method to guide you:
- Mark Your Paper: Before printing, grab a pencil and draw a small arrow on the top-left corner of one side of a blank sheet of paper. This arrow will serve as your directional guide.
- First Print: Place the paper in your printer’s tray so that the arrow is pointing upwards (or in the direction your printer feeds from the top). Print the first side of your ephemera design.
- Second Print (The Flip): After the first side prints, observe where the arrow is located relative to the printed design. For most printers, you will simply need to flip the paper over (like turning a page in a book, without rotating it end-for-end) and place it back into the tray in the same orientation. The arrow’s original direction should now be pointing down or towards the back of the tray. This ensures the second side prints correctly relative to the first. It’s always a good idea to do a test print on a scrap piece of paper first to confirm your printer’s specific feeding mechanism.
Once you’ve successfully printed both sides, your design should be perfectly aligned and oriented in the same direction on both faces of the paper, ready for your stunning double-sided envelopes!
Feel free to print this double-sided ephemera design as many times as you desire, allowing you to create a bountiful collection of these charming envelopes.
3. Tracing and Cutting Your Envelope Blanks
Now, place your chosen square templates onto your double-sided ephemera printable. You have the creative freedom to position them as a traditional square or, for a more distinctive look, rotate them 45 degrees to form a diamond shape, as I did. If opting for the diamond orientation, try to align any significant writing or imagery on the printable with the left and right corners of your template. This thoughtful alignment will contribute to a more polished and visually harmonious final envelope when assembled. Using your regular pencil, carefully trace around the edges of the template onto the printed paper.
Once traced, use your scissors to precisely cut out each ephemera square. Always cut just inside the pencil line you’ve traced to ensure no visible pencil marks remain on your finished envelopes, resulting in a cleaner, professional edge.
4. Finding the Center Point for Perfect Folds
This step is crucial for achieving symmetrical and crisp folds. Take a small ruler and gently connect the left and right corners of your square with your pencil, drawing a short, light line in the middle section. Rotate the paper 90 degrees and repeat the process, connecting the opposite corners with another short line. Where these two small pencil marks intersect, you’ll find the exact center of your envelope. This “cross” serves as an invaluable guide for all subsequent folds, ensuring perfect alignment.
The intersection point is your anchor for all folding, ensuring that your envelope takes on its intended shape with perfect symmetry.
5. Folding the Envelope Flaps
Now, let’s bring your envelope to life with some careful folding:
- Side Flaps: Using the central intersection point as your guide, fold the left and right corners inwards. These will form the side flaps of your envelope. Press firmly to create clean creases.
- Bottom Flap: Fold the bottom corner of your square upwards. At this point, you have a choice. You can leave it as a single fold, which creates a distinct and charming look for your envelope.
- Optional Double-Fold for Bottom Flap: For an alternative aesthetic, unfold the bottom flap. Then, fold it halfway down towards the center, creating a small crease, and then fold it upwards again as you initially did. This creates a refined, layered look for the bottom of your envelope. Both methods are beautiful; the choice is yours!
- Top Flap: Finally, fold the top flap downwards. Make any minor adjustments to ensure all the edges meet neatly. Don’t be discouraged if your first few attempts aren’t absolutely perfect; practice makes perfect, and you’ll find your rhythm with each envelope you create.
This second fold adds another layer of visual interest.
6. Securing Your Envelope with Adhesive
Unfold the bottom flap, and carefully apply your chosen adhesive along the side edges of the bottom flap. Before applying glue, briefly observe how the envelope flaps naturally overlap when closed. This will give you a clear understanding of exactly where to place the glue to avoid accidentally sealing parts that should remain open. Once the glue is applied, press the bottom flap upwards, securing it to the middle section of the envelope. Use your fingers to apply gentle pressure for a few seconds, ensuring the glue sets firmly and all flaps are securely held in place.
7. Adding Vintage Character with Distress Ink
To enhance the antique feel of your super chic envelopes, lightly distress their edges using mini distress ink. I chose “Walnut Stain” for its rich, earthy tone, but “Vintage Photo” or “Antique Linen” are also excellent choices for a classic brown, aged effect. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to introduce a pop of color, feel free to experiment with your favorite colored distress inks. This step truly gives your envelopes that desirable aged, time-worn charm, making them look like authentic vintage finds.
8. Embellishing with Gold Accents
For an extra touch of sophistication, cut small square pieces of gold accent washi tape and adhere them to the back of your envelopes. Beyond its decorative appeal, washi tape also serves a functional purpose by holding the envelope flaps closed without causing damage if you decide to reopen them later. Its gentle adhesive is perfect for this application. The metallic glint of gold beautifully complements the neutral tones of the French ephemera.
To further elevate the gilded effect, you can add a touch more gold directly onto your washi tape. My personal favorite for this is the Decocolor gold marker, which delivers a rich, opaque metallic sheen. However, don’t limit yourself! Gold acrylic paint, gold wax, or even a dab of gold nail polish can achieve a similar stunning effect. Improvise with what you have on hand to make each envelope truly unique.
Your Collection of Vintage Ephemera Envelopes
After printing the ephemera design just twice, I managed to create a charming collection of eight different-sized envelopes. You’ll be amazed at how quickly and easily you master this craft once you get the hang of the folding and assembly process!
Depending on the folding technique you chose for the bottom flap, you might notice some faint pencil marks from when you traced the center. A simple eraser will quickly and cleanly remove these, leaving your envelopes pristine.
Remember that the initial orientation of your templates when tracing, coupled with the way you fold the printed paper, significantly influences the final appearance of your stunning ephemera envelopes. Experiment with different placements to discover new looks!
I absolutely adore the timeless, neutral elegance of these handmade beauties. I’m confident you’ll discover countless creative avenues to integrate them into all your crafting endeavors, from gift wrapping to art journaling.
Take a closer look at the two distinct ways to fold the bottom flap. Each method imparts its own unique charm and character to the envelope. Ultimately, the choice between these two styles comes down to your personal preference, or perhaps, if you can’t decide, you might opt for a delightful mix of both!
As you can see, each ephemera envelope possesses its own distinct personality. Even with their minor, charming imperfections, they exude an undeniable allure and look absolutely stunning.
While the refined look of gold accent washi tape on our closed envelopes is beautiful, the improvised gold marker on washi tape also yields an incredible result. If a gold marker isn’t available, don’t hesitate to substitute with gold acrylic paint, gold wax, or even gold nail polish. The key is to be resourceful and adapt using materials you already have within reach!
Unleash Your Creativity: Customizing Your Envelopes
While I envisioned these envelopes with a classic neutral vibe, I wholeheartedly encourage you to personalize them to your heart’s content! Consider dyeing the paper with natural elements like coffee or avocado for unique muted tones. Experiment with watercolors, highly diluted acrylics, or your favorite spray inks to introduce a spectrum of colors. If you plan to use any wet techniques, it’s advisable to do so before assembling the envelopes, allowing the paper to dry completely and prevent warping.
I truly hope you find as much joy in this delightful project as I did creating it for you. Give it a try, and craft as many of these distinctive pieces as your creative spirit desires! In the world of junk journaling, scrapbooking, and gift-giving, one can never have too many beautiful ephemera envelopes. Having a stash of these handmade treasures readily available will undoubtedly prove to be an excellent idea for all your future crafting adventures!
