The Inspiration: A Grand Tour from Home
Jane recounts the profound inspiration behind this particular journal: “At the time of making this journal, the UK was experiencing its third lockdown due to Covid-19. It was inevitable, therefore, that my thoughts turned to the deep desire to travel, if not in reality, then certainly through the pages of my journal.” This sentiment resonates deeply with many, transforming the act of creation into a form of escapism and wish fulfillment, a common theme for art journalers and scrapbookers during times of limited mobility.
Her vision was particularly drawn to the historical concept of the ‘Grand Tours‘ – an educational and cultural journey traditionally undertaken by wealthy young ladies of yesteryear. These intrepid travelers would traverse Europe, lingering in all the fashionable spots, gathering experiences, and often meticulously documenting their adventures in detailed travel memoirs. Jane sought to capture this romantic spirit of exploration and documentation within her own unique creation, offering a nostalgic nod to a bygone era of sophisticated travel.
Designing the Journey: The Concertina Structure
To truly embody the spirit of a grand voyage, Jane envisioned a journal whose very structure would tell a story. “I wanted to make a journal that represented such a voyage, not just through the ephemera and images I used, but also through the physical structure of the book itself,” she explains. This led her to a brilliant choice: the concertina structure, also widely known as an accordion book. This particular binding method is ideal for narratives that unfold over time, making it perfect for a travel journal.
This ingenious design offers multiple ways to interact with the journal. It can be viewed traditionally as a book when folded, revealing individual pages sequentially, much like reading a traditional memoir. However, its true magic unfolds when extended, transforming into a long, continuous strip—a visual timeline of a journey, allowing a panoramic view of the entire adventure. Furthermore, it can stand independently in a charming star formation, allowing glimpses into its hidden treasures from various angles, creating an immersive and interactive experience for the viewer. This dynamic structure perfectly mirrors the unfolding narrative of a European adventure, inviting discovery at every turn.
The foundation for this remarkable journal was meticulously constructed from a rich tapestry of historical elements. Jane collaged together numerous pieces of old map fragments, snippets of handwritten letters, and pages from foreign language books, all carefully assembled into one long, continuous strip. This base layer immediately evokes a sense of history, mystery, and discovery, setting the perfect stage for the European journey within. The use of actual vintage documents provides an unparalleled authenticity and charm that digital prints alone cannot fully replicate, making it a true mixed media masterpiece.
The Covers: A Textile Narrative
Given the unique nature of the concertina design, a traditional spine was not an option for the covers. Jane ingeniously adapted her approach, creating covers that are both practical and deeply evocative. For the front, she printed a captivating old photograph of three ladies traveling onto fabric, instantly setting a nostalgic tone that transports the viewer back to the early 20th century. The back cover features the iconic Eiffel Tower, a universally recognized symbol of European romance and adventure, expertly sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s Vintage Paris bundle.
These printed fabric pieces were then handstitched onto sturdy calico, adding a beautiful tactile dimension and ensuring durability, while emphasizing the handmade nature of the journal. Finally, they were machine stitched to the covers of the book, creating a secure and aesthetically pleasing finish. The journal is elegantly secured with a soft silk tie, enhancing its vintage charm and adding a luxurious touch. To ensure the precious contents are kept safe during its imagined travels, Jane designed a clever protective pocket. This was created by printing a detailed map from the Olde World Maps bundle onto a piece of calico, beautifully integrating functionality with the overarching travel theme and making it truly functional as a memory-keeping journal.
The Thread of Journey: A Symbolic Detail
To further amplify the sensation of a continuous voyage, Jane incorporated a delicate yet powerful design element: a handstitched line in red thread. This subtle yet significant detail travels along the bottom of all the pages, acting as a visual metaphor for the journey itself. It elegantly connects each segment of the concertina, symbolizing the unbroken path of exploration and discovery across Europe, binding the disparate elements into a cohesive narrative.
This deliberate choice adds not only a pop of color but also a deeply personal, handmade touch, evoking the painstaking care a traveler might take in tracing their route on a map or documenting their path in a diary. It serves as a visual guide, subtly directing the eye through the journal’s unfolding narrative and reinforcing the idea of a continuous, purposeful journey, making this vintage-inspired journal truly unique.
Curating Authenticity: Ephemera as Storytellers
When it came to selecting the myriad images and ephemera for her journal, Jane found herself “spoilt for choice” amidst the vast collections of The Graphics Fairy bundles. Her primary guiding principle was a keen focus on authenticity rather than mere decoration. Each piece of ephemera was chosen not just for its visual appeal, but for its ability to convey a sense of genuine travel and historical context, truly making this a vintage ephemera journal.
As you metaphorically travel through the pages of this journal, you discover an enchanting array of interesting pieces tucked away in its many pockets and compartments. These aren’t just pretty pictures; they are artifacts that tell a story: vintage business cards from imagined Parisian bistros, old receipts from forgotten transactions, charming fashion items reflecting the era, detailed maps of countries and cities for navigation, evocative photographs capturing moments in time, quaint postcards ready to be sent home, archaic timetables for train or ship journeys, and even a practical pocket filled with stamps for the owner to use when dispatching letters to loved ones. Each item serves as a window into the past, enriching the narrative of the imaginary grand tour.
A Functional Keepsake: More Than Just a Book
Jane’s intention was for the journal to appear genuinely functional, as if it were an indispensable companion to the seasoned traveler. “I wanted the journal to look functional, as if it was important to the traveler; that it was where they kept all their travel information, maps, etc. for their travels as well as souvenirs picked up along the way,” she elaborates. This design philosophy imbues the journal with a sense of purpose and history, making it feel like a cherished relic from a bygone era, rather than just a decorative item. It truly is a functional art piece.
A key feature contributing to this functionality is the inclusion of numerous tuck spots. Each of the valley folds within the concertina structure cleverly conceals these pockets, providing ideal spaces for securely holding various pieces of ephemera – be it a pressed flower, a foreign coin, a bus ticket, or a hastily scrawled note. These interactive elements invite the viewer to explore and discover, mimicking the surprise and delight of finding forgotten treasures in an old travel trunk or an ancestral album. They transform the journal from a passive display into an engaging, interactive experience.
Among the many delightful inclusions, Jane crafted a miniature notebook, perfect for jotting down travel notes or sketching observations. This charming accessory features exquisite covers sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s French Mini Ephemera and French Attic bundles, filled with blank papers, and designed to slot perfectly into one of the numerous tuck spots. It’s a thoughtful touch that adds both utility and an extra layer of vintage elegance, suggesting a place for personal reflections and creative output during the journey.
Further enhancing the theme of self-sufficiency and readiness for travel, Jane also created a charming mini sewing kit, meticulously assembled using beautiful items from the Sewing Ephemera bundle. This detail speaks volumes about the preparedness of a traveler on a long journey and adds another layer of delightful discovery within the journal, hinting at mending clothes or creating small repairs on the go, a truly thoughtful and authentic touch for a vintage travel narrative.
The Tactile Experience: Textures and Layers
A hallmark of Jane’s work is her masterful use of diverse textures, creating a rich sensory experience for the viewer. “As always, I tried to get plenty of different textures into the journal,” she notes, showcasing her commitment to this crucial aspect of junk journaling. This involved printing on various weights and types of papers, from crisp, thin sheets reminiscent of old letters to more substantial cardstock, as well as incorporating fabric elements throughout, adding depth and interest to every page.
One striking example of this tactile artistry is a set of tags created by printing detailed maps onto pieces of calico. These map tags were then charmingly attached to various pages using buttons, adding an element of quaint, old-world charm and another layer of visual interest, making them both decorative and functional as pull-out elements. Additionally, several script ephemera images were printed onto a semi-transparent paper, ingeniously reminiscent of authentic Air Mail paper. This delicate material evokes the feeling of receiving a precious letter from afar, further immersing the viewer in the narrative of travel and correspondence, highlighting the intricate detail and care poured into this DIY craft project.
