The Genesis of a Heavenly Creation: Marie Willetts’ Design Team Project

Hello again, everyone! It’s Marie from Crafty Landing, returning for my second Design Team project with The Graphics Fairy, and I’m excited to share something truly unique this time. For this particular creation, I was determined to push my creative boundaries, step boldly out of my comfort zone, and truly unleash my deepest artistic inspirations. The result, I believe, is a testament to embracing new challenges. So, without further delay, and with a metaphorical drum roll, I proudly introduce ‘The Whisper Of Angels’ junk journal. As you can immediately observe from the cover, I’ve designed this journal in the distinctive, ethereal form of wings.

The inspiration for an Angel-themed journal wasn’t initially planned. One quiet evening, while browsing the extensive bundles on The Graphics Fairy site, I found myself inexplicably drawn to the sheer beauty and variety of the Angel images. I recall my surprise at discovering just how many exquisite Angel illustrations were available. It was in that moment that a creative seed was planted in my mind, a concept that blossomed and grew into this very project. To achieve the unique wing shape for the journal, I sourced a free A4 wing template online. I printed it at full size, then subsequently reduced it a couple more times to create varying page dimensions. This process resulted in a journal where each page, while maintaining the same elegant wing silhouette, offers a delightful variation in size, adding to its bespoke charm. Now, let’s venture inside this heavenly journal.

Journey Through the Angelic Pages: A Detailed Look Inside

For the foundation of this journal, I utilized thick scrapbooking cardstock, which provides a sturdy and luxurious feel. This was then meticulously covered with authentic vintage dictionary and music papers, creating a rich, aged backdrop. Over these base layers, I delicately arranged pieces of vintage crochet and various laces, adding texture and a sense of timeless elegance. To introduce a subtle shimmer, I also incorporated touches of gold spotty tulle throughout the design. The journal’s captivating cover features one of my absolute favorite Angel images, carefully cut from an Angel Panel printable sheet. This focal point is beautifully accented with a charming gold ribbon flower, tying the angelic theme together.

Intricate Pockets and Playful Elements

Turning to the left page, you’ll discover a charming pocket I crafted using a section of a vintage lace table runner. The naturally scalloped edge of the lace proved to be a perfect match for the delicate curve at the bottom of my wing-shaped pages, creating a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing detail. It’s moments like these, where elements unexpectedly align, that truly bring joy to the creative process! Inside this elegant pocket, I’ve tucked an antique-style envelope sourced from the 1700’s Sheet Music Bundle, alongside a delicate lace tag from the Paper Lace Bundle. Both fit flawlessly, enhancing the vintage appeal and offering delightful surprises within the journal.

On the subsequent left page, you’ll encounter an enchanting Angel image from the Vintage Easter Bundle. To my eye, this particular angel appears as if she’s gracefully soaring on a swing, an observation that sparked the idea of creating a “swinging” tag. I meticulously cut the tag to perfectly complement the unique wing shape of the journal page and then layered the angel image with delicate lace and gold tulle, adding depth and sparkle. The tag is cleverly attached to the page using a split pin, allowing it to gently swing, adding an interactive and whimsical element to the journal. You might also notice the subtle gold stenciling underneath, directly on the journal page, a detail I’ve incorporated consistently throughout the entire journal to maintain a cohesive, luxurious feel. The lovely pink page on the right, sourced from the Pastel Christmas Bundle, features a beautiful lace bellyband. This band elegantly secures a journal card that I created using an image from the Angel Ephemera Bundle. The ability to easily resize and adapt images from The Graphics Fairy site is incredibly empowering; the creative possibilities truly feel boundless when you can manipulate these stunning visuals to fit your exact vision.

A Favorite Spread: The Vellum Window

This particular spread holds a special place in my heart; it is, without a doubt, one of my absolute favorites within the journal. The overall aesthetic is incredibly pleasing and harmonious. On the left, I created a beautiful collage featuring a serene blue Angel image from the Scandinavian Christmas Bundle, layered over genuine vintage music paper. To enhance this vignette, I added a delicate cluster of lace and a charming blue trim in the bottom corner. This section ingeniously flips open like a miniature booklet, revealing a dedicated space perfect for journaling or hidden notes. What made this spread particularly challenging, yet ultimately rewarding, was my decision to cut out a decorative frame from the following page on the right (sourced from the Angel Ephemera Bundle) and transform it into a vellum window. This required careful planning and precise positioning of the blue Angel on the preceding page, ensuring she would be perfectly visible through the translucent vellum when the page was turned. The finished effect is truly stunning, creating a sense of depth and discovery. This technique is one I’m certainly eager to explore again in future projects.

Discovering Hidden Gems and Thoughtful Details

The page on the right proudly showcases a delightful fabric pocket. Staying true to the luxurious and ethereal style of the journal, I carefully selected a fabric from my personal stash that featured subtle gold elements, perfectly complementing the overall theme. This pocket is further embellished with a charming lace cluster and a sweet little cherub image, thoughtfully sourced from the Angels Are Among Us Bundle, all tied together with delicate gold twine. Tucked inside, you’ll find a beautiful journaling card from the Holiday Blues collection, offering another space for reflection or personal notes. As I highlighted at the very beginning of this post, a significant aspect of this project involved utilizing a diverse array of Angel images from numerous bundles and printable resources. It truly is astonishing what treasures you can unearth on The Graphics Fairy website when you embark on a specific search, often in the most unexpected corners. For instance, I was delighted to discover some wonderfully colorful Angels nestled within the Vintage Easter Bundle, proving that inspiration can be found in a multitude of places.

I’m sharing this particular image to emphasize a valuable lesson I often remind myself of in crafting: we sometimes feel an overwhelming urge to embellish every single page, but there are moments when a page’s inherent beauty speaks volumes on its own. Here, the journal page on the left, from the exquisite Holiday Blues Bundle, possesses such a captivating charm that I chose to leave it unadorned. Its serene presence, perfectly nestled within the graceful wing shape, is simply ideal, don’t you agree? The opposing page offers a lovely contrast, featuring a practical flip-out music sheet journal card. This card I did embellish, adorning it with delicate vintage lace, a touch of shimmering gold tulle, and a beautiful Winter Angel image, a gem from the Pastel Christmas collection. This balance between intricate design and thoughtful simplicity is key to creating a truly harmonious journal.
