Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Altered Art Gift Tin
Now that you have all your supplies ready, let’s begin the transformation of your Altoid tin into a cherished piece of altered art. Each step is designed to be straightforward, allowing you to enjoy the creative process while building a beautiful and unique item.
1. Preparing Your Tin for Embellishment
If your vision for the completed tin includes a dangling element, such as a necklace or a charm, the first step is to mark the precise placements for your holes. Using a black Sharpie pen, carefully mark two points on the tin. It’s crucial to ensure these marks are positioned so that the holes will extend slightly beyond the edge of the lid when the tin is closed. This foresight prevents any obstruction and ensures your dangling elements will hang beautifully.
Precisely mark the hole placements on your Altoid tin. The goal is to create holes that allow for a necklace or embellishment to pass through without interfering with the lid’s closure. This attention to detail ensures both functionality and aesthetic appeal in your finished piece.
Once your marks are in place, retrieve your Crop-A-Dile Hole Punch. This robust tool is a crafter’s best friend for working with metal, allowing you to effortlessly create clean, perfectly round holes in the tin. Its precision ensures a professional finish, preventing any jagged edges that might occur with less specialized tools. If you don’t have a Crop-A-Dile, a drill with a small metal bit can also work, but always exercise caution and wear appropriate safety gear.
2. Priming for a Flawless Finish
With the holes punched, it’s time to prepare the tin’s surface for painting and embellishment. Close the lid securely and head to a well-ventilated area – ideally outdoors or in a garage with open doors. Apply a good quality black primer, such as Rustoleum 2X Primer, to the entire exterior of the tin. Priming is a crucial step as it creates a uniform surface, ensures excellent adhesion for your subsequent layers of paint and paper, and helps prevent chipping or scratching over time. Allow the primer to dry completely, following the manufacturer’s recommendations. Patience here will pay off with a much more durable and professional result.
3. Printing, Cutting, and Dry-Fitting Your Graphics
Now, print out all the captivating bird-themed graphics from your free printable. As mentioned earlier, toner-based prints are ideal, especially if you plan to use Distress Ink, as inkjet prints can sometimes smear. If you’re using an inkjet printer, consider spraying a light layer of clear acrylic sealer over your prints once they’re dry to protect the ink. This small step can save you from smudged designs later on.
Carefully cut out each of the designs from your printed collage sheet. For a refined touch, use your We-R-Memory-Keepers Corner Chomper set to the 1/2″ setting to perfectly round the corners of your cutouts. This simple step adds a professional, finished look and helps prevent edges from lifting later on. If you don’t have a corner chomper, you can carefully trim the corners with scissors for a slightly rounded effect.
Before applying any adhesive, take the time to dry-fit all your cut pieces onto the Altoid tin. This crucial step allows you to assess the placement, check for proper sizing, and make any necessary adjustments without the pressure of wet glue. Ensure each graphic aligns perfectly with its intended spot on the tin – both inside and out.
Continue to test fit each element, including the interior pieces and the mini book cover. This iterative process of dry-fitting guarantees that all components will come together seamlessly in the final assembly, creating a cohesive and polished altered art piece. Take your time during this stage to ensure everything looks just right.
4. Distressing and Inking for a Vintage Aesthetic
To give your mini book cover a charming, aged appearance, gently distress its edges using a paper distressing tool. This technique creates a slightly worn, vintage look that complements the bird-themed graphics beautifully. If you don’t have a specific distressing tool, the edge of a ruler or even your scissors can be used carefully to create a similar effect.
Next, locate the subtle broken lines on your mini book cover – these indicate the precise fold lines. These guiding marks are essential for creating crisp and accurate folds that will give your mini book a professional structure.
Using a bone folder, firmly crease along these fold lines. A bone folder creates sharp, clean folds that are essential for the mini book’s structure. Applying even pressure will ensure your folds are straight and professional-looking, enhancing the overall quality of your altered art piece.
Now, it’s time to add a touch of color and age with Distress Ink. Using Salty Ocean Distress Ink and a blending tool, gently apply pigment to the edges of all your collage elements. This step creates a beautiful, subtle halo effect around the images, enhancing their vintage charm and helping them pop against the tin. Focus on the edges for a natural, worn appearance.
Apply the Distress Ink to the edges of the following pieces:
- Exterior Front
- Exterior Back
- Interior Front
- Interior Back
This consistent application ensures a harmonious aesthetic throughout your altered Altoid tin. The soft blue hue of Salty Ocean Distress Ink beautifully complements the bird-themed graphics, giving them a cohesive and antique feel.
Extend the inking process to your mini book cover by tinting both its inside and outside surfaces with Salty Ocean Distress Ink. This step ensures that the mini book seamlessly integrates with the overall vintage theme of your Altoid tin, providing a consistent aged look.
5. Mounting and Detailing Graphics
For added durability and a professional finish, adhere your focal elements to a sheet of black cardstock using Aleene’s Tacky Glue. Apply a thin, even layer of glue, position your cutout, and then firmly smooth it in place with your fingers or an old credit card. This step ensures there are no air bubbles and the graphic is securely mounted.
Once the glue is completely dry, carefully fussy cut around the edges of the mounted graphics, leaving a narrow margin of approximately 1/8″ of black cardstock. This creates a subtle yet impactful black border that frames your images, making them stand out and adding a touch of elegance to your Altoid tin art.
6. Crafting the Interior Walls and Decorative Touches
To elegantly conceal the shiny metal along the interior walls of your Altoid tin, cut a strip of black cardstock measuring 3/4″ wide by 11″ long. This specific dimension is designed to fit perfectly beneath the tiny rolled edge of the tin, creating a clean and finished look. Before gluing, dry-fit the strip to ensure a snug fit, then remove it for embellishment.
Confirm the dry-fit of the black cardstock strip along the interior side wall of the tin. This step is essential to ensure that the strip will seamlessly cover the exposed metal, providing a smooth and dark backdrop for your interior graphics. Once satisfied, remove the strip in preparation for embellishment.
Grab a pencil with an eraser and use it as a stamp! Dip the eraser end into your aqua or turquoise acrylic craft paint and create a playful pattern of dots along the black cardstock strip. This simple technique adds a whimsical touch and visual interest to the interior of your tin. Allow the paint to dry completely.
Once the painted dots are dry, add small dots of adhesive over them and sprinkle liberally with fine glitter in blue and silver. This step adds a magical shimmer and dimension, turning a simple dot pattern into something truly special. Gently tap off any excess glitter and allow the adhesive to set.
The result is a beautifully finished cardstock strip, ready to be adhered to the interior of your Altoid tin. The sparkling dots will catch the light, adding an unexpected touch of glamor and craftsmanship to your altered art piece.
7. Painting Edges and Highlighting
With a fine paintbrush and black acrylic paint, carefully edge the seams of the interior front and back of the tin. This technique creates clean lines and helps to frame your interior graphics, giving a crisp boundary where the paper meets the tin. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference in the overall polished appearance.
For a subtle pop of color, use your finger to apply a tiny highlight of aqua or turquoise paint along the edge of the tin’s lid. The warmth of your finger helps to blend the paint smoothly, creating a soft, ethereal glow. This unexpected touch of blue beautifully contrasts with the black primer, adding depth and visual interest.
Observe how the delicate blue accent against the deep black background creates a stunning visual effect. This subtle detail elevates the tin from a simple craft project to a sophisticated piece of altered art, showcasing thoughtful craftsmanship.
8. Adhering Graphics and Assembling the Tin
Once all the paint is completely dry, apply a thin but even layer of Aleene’s Tacky Glue to the interior front and interior back surfaces of the tin. Carefully press your prepared cutouts into place, using an old credit card or a bone folder to smooth them firmly and remove any air bubbles. This ensures a strong bond and a smooth, flawless finish.
Repeat the adhesion process for the exterior front and exterior back of the tin. Apply glue, position the cutouts precisely, and smooth them down. Consistency in technique here will result in a beautifully unified and professional-looking altered art piece.
If you’ve opted to add a necklace or any dangling embellishment to your tin, now is the time to thread your craft wire or ribbon through the pre-punched holes. This is critical to do before gluing the decorated cardstock strip along the interior side wall. By doing so, the attachment points for your necklace will be neatly concealed beneath the paper, resulting in a cleaner and more professional finish.
Take a moment to admire your progress! At this stage, all the collage elements should be securely adhered, creating a rich tapestry of bird-themed imagery both inside and out. The tin is really starting to take shape, showcasing the beautiful foundation you’ve built.
Now, glue the main focal element onto the exterior front of your Altoid tin. This is often the most prominent bird image or design, serving as the centerpiece of your artwork. Position it carefully to ensure it’s centered and aligned, then smooth it down firmly for a perfect bond.
Don’t forget the exterior back! Adhere its corresponding graphic, maintaining the beautiful bird theme and ensuring that every side of your altered tin is a delight to behold. This consistency ensures a high-quality, finished piece from all angles.
9. Adding Elegant Dresden Trim
Dresden trim is a wonderfully delicate and ornate embellishment that adds a touch of vintage sophistication. To make it harmonize perfectly with your project, tint the Dresden trim with two coats of acrylic craft paint in your chosen color (aqua/turquoise works beautifully here). Once the paint is dry, the trim is ready to be carefully adhered along the outside edge of the tin. Its intricate design will provide stunning dimension, form, and a final burst of color to your altered art piece.
Once carefully glued in place, the Dresden trim transforms the tin, adding a luxurious feel and an intricate border that beautifully frames your artwork. It truly elevates the project, turning a simple tin into a captivating heirloom piece.
10. Final Embellishments and Shimmer
For an extra touch of sparkle and charm, add glittery dots and adhesive gems to the cover of your Altoid tin. These small details can catch the light and draw the eye, enhancing the overall aesthetic. Place them strategically to complement your bird imagery without overwhelming it.
To give your Blue Bird focal element a captivating depth and a beautiful, glass-like sheen, apply a generous pool of Glossy Accents Adhesive over it. This self-leveling medium will dry to a clear, dimensional finish, making your bird appear as if it’s protected beneath a layer of resin. Allow ample time for it to dry completely, ideally overnight, to achieve the best results.
Crafting the Miniature Accordion Book: A Hidden Gem
One of the most charming additions to your altered Altoid tin is a tiny, handcrafted accordion book. This miniature masterpiece can hold secrets, tiny notes, or even more bird-themed artwork, adding an extra layer of delight to your gift.
1. Preparing the Book Pages
Begin by cutting strips of black cardstock, each measuring 2″ wide by 11″ long. For the example project, four such strips were used, providing a good number of pages for your mini book. A paper trimmer or craft knife with a cutting mat will ensure clean, straight cuts.
Using a scoring board, crease each strip at precise 1 3/4″ increments along its entire length. This scoring will make folding much easier and ensure perfectly uniform pages for your accordion book. The scoring board is invaluable for achieving neat, crisp folds that are essential for a professional-looking miniature book.
After creasing, you’ll have a series of zig-zagged pieces of cardstock. Notice the small ‘tail’ at the end of each strip – do not trim this off! These tails are crucial for seamlessly gluing the individual strips together to form one long, continuous accordion. This clever design ensures a sturdy and beautiful mini book.
2. Assembling and Decorating the Book
Once you’ve assembled your strips into a long accordion, it’s time to add character. Use assorted bird stamps and a Delicata Ink Pad (Silvery Shimmer works wonderfully here) to stamp charming bird imagery onto one side of the accordion. Create a pleasing pattern, varying your stamps and placements. This personal touch makes each page unique and delightful.
Apply a thin layer of adhesive to the back of the stamped accordion strip and carefully fold it into its final ‘pages’ configuration. You may find it necessary to trim off one or two end panels from your completed accordion to ensure it fits perfectly within the mini book cover you distressed earlier. Precision here ensures a neat, compact book.
These folded pages will now fit snugly within the previously prepared ‘Birdwatching’ Book Cover. The careful measurements and folds ensure a harmonious fit, making your mini book feel custom-made and professional. Take a moment to test the fit before final adhesion.
Adhere the accordion pages to both the front and back inside covers of your mini book, leaving the spine free. This allows the accordion to expand and contract freely, mimicking a real book. Secure adhesion here is key to a durable and functional mini book.
The completed mini book is a charming addition, perfectly sized for tucking into your altered art Altoid tin. It’s a delightful surprise element that adds depth and intrigue to your handmade gift. You can fill its pages with tiny illustrations, inspiring quotes, or even miniature pressed flowers.
There’s something irresistibly charming about miniature books. Their delicate nature and potential for hidden messages or tiny artworks make them truly special. This tiny book adds an extra layer of wonder to your Altoid tin, making it more than just a decorative object.
The Final Touch: A Thoughtful Gift
To complete your bird-themed altered art tin, consider adding a tiny Tim Holtz idea-ology corked vial filled with birdseed. It’s a whimsical and thoughtful detail, perfect for a nature lover. Imagine the delight on their face when they discover this charming surprise! This small vial makes the tin not just a decorative item but a delightful curiosity, hinting at a secret world within.
The cover of your altered Altoid tin now boasts a beautiful blend of color and shimmer. The glossy accents, distressed edges, and intricate Dresden trim come together to create a visual masterpiece. Each element contributes to a sophisticated and enchanting aesthetic.
This handcrafted tin is more than just a gift; it’s a piece of art imbued with thought and care. It’s sure to bring a genuine smile to the face of any lucky recipient, showcasing your creativity and thoughtfulness.
And the little treasures nestled inside – the mini book and birdseed vial – are an unexpected bonus, transforming the tin into a miniature world of wonder.
Even the back of the tin receives a touch of ‘bling’, ensuring that every angle offers visual interest and a cohesive design.
Imagine this charming tin, perhaps ready to share a snack with a lucky birdie. It’s a delightful narrative piece that sparks imagination and brings joy.
Observe the intricate details on the front of the tin – the layered graphics, the vibrant colors, and the subtle shimmer. Each element contributes to its unique charm.
The back of the tin is just as thoughtfully decorated, continuing the bird theme with delicate details and consistent aesthetic.
The interior front of the lid, featuring a charming bird cage design, offers a delightful surprise upon opening the tin.
And the interior back, with its binoculars illustration, completes the birdwatching theme, making every aspect of the tin a narrative experience.
To ensure your beautiful Altoid tin art lasts for years to come, apply a final layer of high-quality Spray Sealer. This protective coating will safeguard the delicate pigments and paper from wear, tear, and environmental elements, preserving your artwork for endless enjoyment.
