It’s an absolute delight and privilege to be back collaborating with The Graphics Fairy team, especially now, with a renewed focus on celebrating the art of junk journaling. Leo and I are incredibly excited and happy to share our September design team project with you, a journal born from a heartfelt concept.
For this project, I’ve meticulously crafted a journal that aims to beautifully celebrate the profound concepts of nature and nurture. Titled “Nana’s Garden,” this junk journal embodies the essence of growth – not just the fabulous botanicals we cultivate in our physical gardens, but even more significantly, the cherished bonds and individuals within our family gardens. It’s a reflection on the things that blossom and thrive under loving care, making it a truly personal and meaningful piece.
At the very heart of this journal, serving as its focal element, is an exquisite folding tuck book. This charming piece was ingeniously created using two distinct and wonderful vintage images sourced directly from The Graphics Fairy’s extensive collection. It immediately draws the eye and sets a unique tone for the entire journal.
My vision for these captivating portraits within the tuck book was to depict Nana’s beloved daughter, Catherine, alongside her cherished granddaughter, Emily. These figures represent, in my imagination, Nana’s two greatest gifts to the world, paralleling the beauty of her wonderful botanicals. This delicate tuck book is thoughtfully nestled within a clever flip-out pocket, revealing itself as a delightful surprise when you first open the journal. It was my explicit intention for this particular element to establish the overarching theme and emotional depth for every subsequent page of the journal. The evocative portraits themselves were carefully selected from the Antique Portraits 2 bundle, a truly inspiring collection filled with many more captivating images to ignite your creative spark and storytelling.
One of the most satisfying aspects of crafting a junk journal is the creation of interactive elements. For Nana’s Garden, I transformed ordinary envelopes into beautiful and functional tuck spots. First, I sealed these envelopes and then carefully cut them open at one end, preparing them to be covered. The exterior of these envelopes was then adorned with exquisite papers sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s Delicate Endpapers bundle, lending an immediate air of vintage sophistication. Once covered, I added another layer of visual interest by collaging small, complementary pieces of paper onto their surfaces. To further enhance these pockets, charming Graphics Fairy butterflies, discovered within the Interesting Insects bundle, were strategically placed on many of them, adding a touch of whimsical nature. Additionally, various labels were meticulously incorporated onto these pockets. These labels, found in the Printables – Labels & Stickers section of the Premium Site, provided a wonderful array of styles, with five distinct label types used throughout the journal to ensure variety and visual appeal. Even a fascinating eye chart, used as a folded piece of ephemera, found its home from the incredibly diverse Ephemera Collection bundle, proving the versatility of these resources.
The interior of this Nana’s Garden Junk Journal is a rich and diverse tapestry of pages, each chosen to enhance the journal’s vintage aesthetic and provide ample space for creative expression. You’ll find an abundance of beautiful botanical pages, many of which were thoughtfully sourced from antique botanical books, adding an authentic natural history feel. Alongside these, I’ve incorporated painters masking paper for unique texture, vintage dictionary pages for an intellectual touch, and classic Edith Holden pages, celebrated for their natural history illustrations. Crucially, plenty of coffee-dyed pages are interspersed throughout, offering that signature aged look and an inviting canvas perfect for journaling, sketching, or adding personal mementos. My quest for fabulous ephemera also led me to the incredibly rich Printables – Journaling section of The Graphics Fairy website. This treasure trove proved invaluable. Specifically, I utilized the charming 3 x 4.5 Trade Card Collages, several versatile 5 x 7 Journal Pages, the delightful Flower Mini File Folders, and the handy Journal Cards 3 x 4. All of these, along with literally hundreds more options, are readily available in this bountiful section of the Premium Membership Site, making it an indispensable resource for any junk journal enthusiast.
To ensure a cohesive flow and visual harmony throughout the journal, the Delicate Endpapers bundle provided more than just beautiful papers; it also supplied matching washi strips. I’ve strategically used these delicate strips within each of the journal’s signatures, creating a subtle yet effective unifying element. Furthermore, some of this matching washi tape was also applied to several of the journal’s tuck spots, further enhancing continuity and adding a touch of refined detail. Beyond the washi, I ingeniously repurposed scraps from the same endpapers as elegant bases for my botanical collages, which are thoughtfully placed throughout the journal. These miniature collages, carefully assembled, are intended to add an additional layer of botanical interest and intricate detail, inviting the viewer to linger on each page and discover new visual delights.
For those looking to add distinctive touches to their own projects, I wholeheartedly recommend dedicating some time to explore the vast label section of the Premium site. It is brimming with an incredible array of wonderful options, from elegant designs to playful motifs, offering endless possibilities to personalize and enhance your unique creations. You’ll be amazed at the variety and quality available, perfect for adding that finishing flourish to any junk journal or crafting endeavor.
The rich array of journal ephemera that adorns Nana’s Garden was carefully curated from several of The Graphics Fairy’s exceptional bundles. Among these, the truly amazing botanical images, distinguished by their gorgeous black backgrounds, were discovered in the vibrant Red, Green & White Flowers bundle. I absolutely adore these striking images; when thoughtfully sewn onto coffee-stained paper, they transform into the perfect embellishment, infusing a profound sense of vintage elegance and natural beauty into a botanical-themed journal like this one.
Within this bundle, you will uncover many more exquisite ephemera pieces, each designed to ignite and spark your creativity, providing endless possibilities for your next artistic project.
I am genuinely thrilled with how this Nana’s Garden Junk Journal ultimately came together. Every element, from the chosen papers to the delicate embellishments, feels perfectly aligned with the theme of nature, nurture, and cherished memories. My heartfelt thanks go to The Graphics Fairy for providing such a vast and inspiring collection of images, all readily available throughout the Premium Membership Site. These resources were absolutely instrumental in bringing this vision to life and crafting a journal that truly tells a story. We hope this project ignites your own passion for junk journaling and encourages you to explore the boundless creative potential found within The Graphics Fairy’s vintage treasures.
