Hello everyone! My name is Brandi Knebel, and I am the proud owner of Brandi Bel Arts, a passionate small Art and Craft business nestled in the scenic state of Utah, USA. I am beyond excited and truly honored to join The Graphics Fairy Design Team this year. It’s a privilege to share my very first project with you, and I hope it sparks as much joy and creativity in you as it did in me while crafting it!

Crafting the “Pirate’s Life” Junk Journal: A Detailed Overview

My inaugural journal for the Design Team is aptly titled “Pirate’s Life,” a theme that allowed me to delve into a rich tapestry of vintage nautical imagery and tactile textures. For this journal, I utilized several different bundles from The Graphics Fairy’s Premium Membership site, each contributing unique elements to the overall aesthetic. But let’s begin our exploration with the journal’s stunning cover!

This is a soft-cover journal, lovingly constructed from an old paper bag as its base. I then built upon this foundation with numerous sewn layers of various fabrics and delicate lace, creating a wonderfully soft yet durable exterior. The spine, a true focal point, features authentic netting, reminiscent of a fishing boat’s haul. From this netting, I’ve suspended old, fake pirate coins, cherished mementos from a mini cruise my family and I enjoyed a few years ago. These personal touches infuse the journal with a sense of history and adventure.

The front cover proudly displays a striking central image sourced directly from The Graphics Fairy’s Pirate’s Cove Bundle (Image 1). This captivating illustration is carefully layered with a transparency sheet, which I meticulously sewed on to add both depth and a subtle protective sheen. Adjacent to this, you’ll find a distressed pirate flag (Image 6 from the Pirate’s Cove Bundle), which I printed on canvas before tearing and weathering it to achieve an authentic, time-worn appearance. A vintage-style bookplate houses one of the charming printables from the same Pirate’s Cove Bundle, specifically a sheet of words and sayings that perfectly complement our swashbuckling theme. To further enhance the maritime feel, I’ve incorporated a few genuine shells collected over the years, along with a scattering of sand for a touch of gritty texture.

The journal’s closure is a clever mock treasure chest clasp, attached to another piece of printed canvas featuring Image 14 from the Pirate’s Cove collection. This detail reinforces the treasure-hunting narrative of the journal. In terms of dimensions, this journal measures approximately 7 ¼ inches by 5 ½ inches, with a substantial 1 ¾ inch spine, housing four distinct signatures (sections of folded pages). Every element of the cover has been thoughtfully chosen and expertly applied to invite the viewer into a world of high seas and hidden treasures.

Page by Page: Exploring the Inner Depths

Opening the journal, the inside covers immediately immerse you in the theme. I’ve covered them with a delightful mix of my own tea-dyed papers, lending an aged, warm hue, alongside a vintage map image sourced from the Pirate’s Cove Bundle. A unique pocket has been created from a torn section of Image 4 from the Sea Captain’s Voyage Bundle, adding a rustic charm. At the bottom of this page, a vintage ship’s wheel, discovered using The Graphics Fairy’s convenient search function, provides a grounding nautical motif. Inside this pocket, I’ve tucked a cherished vintage German postcard, several layered image transfers from both the Pirate’s Cove and Sea Captain’s Voyage collections, and a beautiful mermaid ATC (Artist Trading Card) printable from the Pirate’s Cove. The mermaid ATC is backed with one of my unique gel prints and adorned with delicate pearl drops for an ethereal touch.

On the right-hand side of this spread, you’ll find one of the dedicated Journal Page Printables from the Pirate’s Cove, which I’ve carefully distressed and enhanced with white and bronze splatters, mimicking sea foam and weathered metal. At the very top, a small flag from the Planner Stickers Printable (Ocean Blue Ephemera Bundle) adds another layer of detail, distressed and stapled for an authentic feel. This spread beautifully combines historical elements with artistic embellishments, inviting exploration.

Moving further into the journal, the left side of this spread features Image 14 from the Pirate’s Cove, a striking illustration I’ve layered with acrylic paint onto a piece of genuine vintage Italian Aeronautical Paper. This unexpected pairing of maritime and aviation history creates a truly unique backdrop. I further enhanced this page with additional mark-making using acrylics and paint pens, and a carefully placed vintage stamp, adding to its layered narrative. On the right side, you can observe my signature layering technique in action, featuring my own gelli prints on delicate rice paper, alongside tea-stained graph paper where I’ve hand-drawn faux topographic contour lines, suggesting maps of unexplored islands. Attached to the graph paper are pieces of the same fabrics used on the cover, a continuation of the journal’s tactile theme, plus a bit more netting from which a charming small starfish charm dangles. Peeking from behind, one of the ledger papers I discovered using The Graphics Fairy’s search tool adds an authentic, aged touch.

Here, on the left, we see the other half of that initial Journal Page Printout from the Pirate’s Cove, creatively transformed. I incorporated a clever tuck-up spot behind a charming paper cluster. This cluster proudly showcases an image from the Shell Collage Printable, part of the delightful She Sells Sea Shells Bundle, which I printed onto canvas for added texture and durability. Within this tuck spot, I’ve housed one of the Bookmark Printables from the Sea Captain’s Voyage, an ideal companion for any adventurer. To the right lies one of the exquisite Journal Page Printables from the Sea Spray Bundle. To this, I added vibrant white and blue splatters, more of those lovely pearl dots, and an additional flag from the Ocean Blue Ephemera Bundle. It’s truly remarkable how seamlessly all these diverse bundles intertwine to create a cohesive and captivating narrative!

For the left side of this captivating spread, I employed another ledger printable from The Graphics Fairy website, which I distressed and artfully folded to create a functional pocket. This pocket is beautifully accented with a piece of blue lace, salvaged from a vintage scarf, a material I’ve thoughtfully woven throughout the entire journal to maintain a unified aesthetic. Inside this pocket, I’ve tucked a unique journaling card, a creation of my own, featuring another of the ATC Printables from Pirate’s Cove. This card is backed with one of my distinct gelli prints and a piece of stained graph paper, adding layers of interest. A touch of additional netting and a small cluster, including one of my personally foraged starfish and a pearl, complete the ensemble. And who, I ask, can resist just a little bit of bronze splattering to add that extra shimmer of buried treasure? To the right, you’ll find an additional Journal Page from the Sea Spray Bundle. To infuse this image with more vibrancy and life, I hand-painted the sky, water, birds, and even the mermaid’s dress using carefully watered-down acrylics, creating a soft, dreamlike quality.

This next spread is a fascinating blend of history and artistry, built upon an antique German Bible page. I added subtle mark-making with acrylic paints and a few delicate splatters to complement its venerable texture. On the left, a charming collage takes shape, utilizing the Circle Ephemera and the Planner Sticker Printables from the Ocean Blues Bundle, alongside a beautiful Shell Image from the She Sells Sea Shells collection. I layered the background circle and the shell with a lustrous embossing glaze, giving them a raised, glossy finish, and topped it off with a single pearl for an elegant touch of texture. On the right, another small collage awaits discovery, featuring the Journaling Stickers from Ocean Blue and the Shell Collage Printable from She Sells Sea Shells. A strip of constellation washi tape, which I felt perfectly aligned with the celestial navigation theme often associated with pirates, ties the elements together harmoniously.

Throughout the creation of this journal, I made a conscious effort to ensure plenty of blank or semi-decorated pages remained for personal journaling, allowing the owner to add their own stories. Here, you can see a much more subdued and inviting spread, perfect for reflection. The left side features some of my exquisitely tea-stained Rice Paper, onto which I’ve transferred one of the evocative sayings available in the Sea Captain’s Voyage Printables. This transfer was done onto a transparency sheet, creating a delicate, floating effect when attached to the page. The right side is the inside of one of the blank Journal Pages, which I’ve adorned with subtle stamping and a gentle acrylic wash, creating a soft backdrop. I added a piece of scrap paper to form a miniature “rock” and carefully glued Image 4 from the Pirate’s Cove onto it, making it appear as if the pirate is perched on a rocky outcrop. A touch of extra “sea spray” completes this simple yet incredibly effective scene, demonstrating that impactful design doesn’t always require complexity.

This spread offers another excellent demonstration of thoughtful layering and texture. On the left, you can observe another of the versatile ledger papers, paired with more of my distinct tea-stained graph paper. I opted for a simple, elegant collage at the bottom of the page, framed by more of that lovely fabric from the journal’s front cover, serving as a subtle edger. The right side features a charming tip-in page, delicately attached with more of the vintage lace, creating a peek-a-boo effect. This tip-in is crafted from the Shell Arts Printable from the She Sells Sea Shells Bundle, which I printed on canvas for a robust feel and then stained to match the journal’s aged aesthetic. Peeking from behind this tip-in, you’ll catch glimpses of more of my vibrant gelli prints, along with additional mark-making on vintage paper, adding unexpected pops of color and pattern.

To the left on this spread, I’ve incorporated one of my treasured vintage Italian Aeronautical pages, its aged script and unique markings adding a rich historical dimension. To the right, I’ve innovatively created two distinct tuck spots, offering interactive elements for the journal’s owner. The upper tuck spot is formed from a delightful cluster, combining one of my vibrant gelli prints, a scrap from an antique Italian Law Book, and another inspiring saying from the Sea Captain’s Voyage Bundle. Nestled inside, you’ll find one of the Label Printables from the Sea Captain’s Voyage, which I’ve backed with the same vintage Map image used for the inside covers and the journal’s closure, creating a cohesive visual thread. I also added a layer of clear embossing glaze for a subtle yet captivating extra shine, highlighting the label. The lower tuck spot utilizes the same paper as the front cover pocket, providing a textural link. Inside, I’ve placed an intriguing image from the Altoid Tin Printables from the Sea Spray Bundle, again backed with a gelli print and hand-sewn for durability and charm. This is topped with one of the playful Planner Stickers from the Ocean Blues, completing a truly interactive and visually rich section.

The left side of this striking spread features one of the dedicated Journal Pages from the Sea Captain’s Voyage, which I meticulously stained and splattered to evoke the worn appearance of a ship’s logbook. To the right, I’ve incorporated another artfully folded ledger page, creating a subtle pocket that houses a unique Journaling Card. This card is a creative fusion, made from a transfer of Image 17, which I then carefully superimposed over another of the ATC cards from the Pirate’s Cove Bundle, resulting in a layered, multi-dimensional artwork. I secured this with a small brad and added a delicate extra bit of cloth, enhancing its handmade charm and providing another opportunity for tactile engagement. This particular spread exemplifies how simple elements, when combined with thoughtful techniques, can create profound depth and interest within a junk journal.

I sincerely hope you’ve thoroughly enjoyed this detailed tour of my “Pirate’s Life” Junk Journal. It has been a true labor of love, blending vintage charm with imaginative techniques.
